You sure it's 5 Eastern?

It said 5pm on the Sky TV guide, which I assume is UK time, not Eastern time.

Gotcha

The TV Guide must sense that my IP is on Eastern Time and adjust accordingly.

The new byline

FWIW, I think it would read better if it says “Pound-for-Pound, the Best Coverage in Boxing”. Just seems a bit wordy the way it’s written.

Of course, me calling ANYONE else wordy is extremely hypocritical.

McCloskey-Rasilla R1

McCloskey with a sneaky lead left. They’ve just described him as “not your average southpaw,” as he’s very awkward and unorthodox. OK then. Left to the body by McCloskey after he eats some jabs from Rasilla. Left hand upstairs from McCloskey, and now he’s starting to do some solid work. He keeps shooting the left upstairs while trying to establish body work. Rasilla trying to swat away McCloskey’s pawing jab, which is being used more as a diversionary tactic than an actual punch. McCloskey is leading the action entirely and dominating the pace. Rasilla throws a lead right, but doesn’t get it.

McCloskey-Rasilla R2

I like McCloskey OK, but he’s got some horrible habits. Leaves his chin wide open. Good counter-puncher will wax him. Rasilla has some opportunities but he doesn’t appear fast enough with this right hand to get the big shot he might well need. McCloskey is giving him all kinds of trouble just by being left-handed. McCloskey springs forward with a right uppercut and a left hand after it. He’s really loading up his left already. “Jab” and left hand works again for Paul. Right hook mostly blocked by Rasilla’s glove.

McCloskey-Rasilla R3

Lead left by McCloskey after they touch each others’ jabbin’ glove a bunch. Rasilla just seems uncomfortable whenever McCloskey makes a move forward. This is really feeling like a fight where eventually McCloskey catches him square, gets him on jelly legs, and finishes him off. His right hand is slow and wide, which is giving McCloskey plenty of counter opportunities, and he almost jumps backward whenever McCloskey comes in on him.

McCloskey-Rasilla R4

If you blur your own vision just a bit McCloskey looks like a small, left-handed Froch when the camera’s at a distance. Just saying.

And Paul’s really starting to come at him this round, and Rasilla just keeps reacting poorly to any show of aggression. He’s mechanical, almost robotic. Souleymane M’baye would have been a much, much better test of course, but we all knew that. Rasilla is clearly out of his depth. Right hook lands for Paul now. Rasilla is about finished mentally. He’s done nothing offensively that hasn’t gotten him hit right back outside of some early jabs, and McCloskey is clearly in the groove now. Rasilla’s getting hit and flailing around the ring now, not so much that he’s hurt but just poorly balanced and not there mentally. RIGHT HOOK clips Rasilla and shakes him up a bit near the bell. Didn’t even land square, just caught Rasilla perfectly off balanced.

McCloskey-Rasilla R5

I think McCloskey has a bit of Vic Darchinyan in him without the big power. He stalks, he moves awkwardly, he punches from odd angles. He might never be a world force, but he’s good. LEFT HANDS from McCloskey! Rasilla’s legs are going to spaghetti. He’s in a bad way and trying to punch his way back into this, but his balance is just awful.

Left hand by McCloskey doesn’t quite get there. Rasilla charges with extremely wide shots, missing them all. Slapping little right hand from McCloskey, almost arrogantly potshotted him there. This is at the point where I genuinely wonder what the point is anymore. Left hand staggers Rasilla into the ropes, and he has to cowboy up a bit. McCloskey throwing one-shot attempts, not landing.

McCloskey 10-9
McCloskey 50-45

Total outclassing.

McCloskey-Rasilla R6

Rasilla lunging around the ring, McCloskey making him miss like he’s in with his worst sparring partner of the camp. This fight hasn’t been competitive for one minute. Body shot lands for Paul. Now he counters him upstairs. This is pointless. Rasilla clearly can’t hang with this guy and it’s been proven for six rounds now. If I’m his corner, I strongly consider pulling him out after this round. You came in, gave it a brave shot, and it’s not there tonight. Rasilla’s trying but he’s just not good enough. McCloskey even seemed to take his foot off the pedal a bit this round. Paul’s decided to hang back a bit and show off his ability to slip Rasilla’s shots. Another good body shot near the bell.

Not having seen McCloskey before

What would his chances be against Hatton or Khan? If he’s a domestic draw, neither one seems out of the realm of possibility.

I think Khan would dominate from distance but a gnat has a puncher’s chance with Khan. Hatton…I don’t know. I could see Hatton rocking him when he leaves himself open, or I could see Hatton being shot and confused by McCloskey’s angles. If Hatton is still the Hatton from the Malignaggi fight, Ricky would be the clear favorite.

If Hatton-Lazcano can sell 25,000 tickets in Madchester

then I’m sure he could do the same for McCloskey, which seems like just as decent of a bounceback fight. If he takes a tune-up fight, that is.

Obviously he's not a PPV draw

But if he’s enough of a draw to get 50,000 Irishmen to hand over 20 Euros, or to get RTE to buy the Irish TV rights, then it might be worth it.

McCloskey-Rasilla R7

Rasilla badly balanced again, and McCloskey pressing the action again. This is right back to where it was two rounds ago, McCloskey just pushing him around, ripping away at him, except perhaps even worse (and from McCloskey’s side, worse means better). Totally dominant round for McCloskey again, eating hard body shots and uppercuts. I have no idea what’s keeping Rasilla going.

McCloskey-Rasilla R8

McCloskey leaves himself open on a lazy, cocky loaded-up left hand, and Rasilla lands two good, clean shots, and then an uppercut lands shortly after. Looks like McCloskey just got stupid there. And here comes McCloskey with an uppercut and another charge, taking the pace back. Lead left lands for Paul. Rasilla is having his best round, he landed about three good shots. SNEAKY left hand down the pipe by McCloskey. Another left counter from McCloskey. Rasilla’s best round and he got destroyed.

McCloskey-Rasilla R9

Trade of shots now, RIGHT HAND STINGS RASILLA AND DOWN HE GOES AFTER A FLURRY! Referee lets it continue. He probably should’ve called it there. Rasilla’s on awful legs and getting chased around the ring trying to cover his head. Rasilla throws a right hand out and another, neither lands. About 1:40 left in the round at this point. Rasilla is swinging for the fences.

“Lovely uppercut,” they tell me. It was one of the worst uppercuts I’ve ever seen and didn’t land either. THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTER SHOT, DOWN GOES RASILLA, AND IT’S WAVED OFF!

Dominant performance from McCloskey.

Sexton-Rogan R1

Rogan digging away with body shots as they hug it up, and the referee’s just going to let Rogan punch away while Sexton gives him a warm embrace. Left hooks from both, Sexton wins a short exchange by getting a right in. I believe this is the referee that stopped a Lazcano charge to let Hatton tie his shoes.

Rogan walks into a jab and falls down, but it’s ruled no knockdown. Sexton throwing BIG power shots and backing Rogan down. They’re clinched up often and Rogan’s just firing in shots that get really close to rabbit territory. Sexton warned for holding, Rogan told to watch the punches to the back of the head. Left hook Sexton, mostly blocked. Very close opening round — Rogan pushed the action, Sexton probably landed the best shots, but there weren’t many of them.

Sexton-Rogan R2

Left hook Sexton, and man Rogan has come out to brawl this round. Sexton is staying very calm in there. Looks like he wants to bait Rogan. Sexton not using the jab much at all, which might wind up a very big mistake. Sexton with a right. Jab by Rogan. Clash of heads as they continue to tie up.

Rogan with a right, Sexton too high with his. Rogan with some NASTY body shots, and here comes Sexton with a few jabs. Whenever they go to the hard camera, it winds up shaking. Left hook to the body by Rogan, but Sexton lands one too. Sexton pops off two jabs. Another fairly close round, but this one I more strongly lead to Rogan.

Sexton-Rogan R3

Rogan clipped with a shot to start the round as he again comes out to start really fast. Long right by Rogan misses, and now Sexton combos up but is blocked. Rogan pushing the action again. Sexton trying to get some 1-2s going, but without establishing the jab he can’t do it. Sexton killed him with the jab the first fight and hasn’t even really tried to use it tonight. Strange choice.

Sexton triples the jab there, looking sharp now. Nice snap on it. Sexton is CONSTANTLY clutching and grabbing and holding on to Rogan’s left arm until he can get a break. Rogan is constantly lunging at him and trying to land big shots. This is a pretty dramatic fight given the lack of good, clean shots so far. Sexton with a big right! Rogan goes backward and that might have shaken him! Rogan resets, though, and gets his legs back pretty quickly. Another nice right from Sexton that leaves Rogan looking bad.

Think Sexton flat-out stole this round.

Sexton-Rogan R4

Sexton with a jab, now fighting going backward and trying to lure Rogan, who has no problem chasing him around. Sloppier round this time around with Sexton not really doing a whole lot at all. Clinching when it gets close. Right hand by Rogan. And another right by Rogan. Sexton is just leaning on him this round. Sexton essentially gave this round away.

Sexton-Rogan R5

Sexton getting wailed on early in the fifth! Rogan is making this a barroom brawl! AND HE’S REALLY PRESSING THE ACTION! He either smells blood or is feeling tired, because this is like a desperate, “I need a 12th round knockout” charge by Rogie.

Rogan just KEEPS hammering him. He’s taking the body when Sexton gets his guard up, going upstairs when he can. Sexton being warned for holding, I believe, and Rogan is cut over the right eye. Rogan throwing heavy shots to the body, but Sexton gets his elbows down there now. Now Sexton starting to push some action as we near the final minute of the round. Rogan warned for using his head.

Sexton is like a sharpshooter now, but Rogan just will not relent! Business is picking up! Rogan throwing everything he’s got! Just everything he’s got! Sexton absorbing this, blocking a lot of it, and he might just be wearing Rogan out. This is crazy how much Rogan put into this round. He looked gassed toward the end of it, but it’s a clear Rogan round.

Sexton coming out to fight this round. When he throws, he picks Rogan apart. Nice jabs and a HEAVY right hand from Sexton! Rogan felt that for sure. If a Klitschko fight were ever this entertaining, they’d be on American PPV every time out.

Now Sexton lays back a bit again. Now peppering the jab is Sexton. Lead right by Sexton. Rogan looks exhausted. The jab is landing for Sexton, and he’s really dominating this round. Easily his best round. Great combination from Sexton. Rogan comes back to the body. Jesus he’s a fighter.

Left hooks from Sexton. Right hand! Rogan is wobbled a bit! Rogan is done. RIGHT HAND! ROGAN FALLING APART IN THERE! He’s out on his feet it appears. But he FIGHTS BACK! ANOTHER vicious right from Sexton! That thing was right on the button. Left uppercut from Sexton. Jab and a right! Rogan throws back.

Rogan almost falls down at the bell he’s so tired. He’s close to finished.
