I’m finding this ad to be vaguely annoying. Promote the sport, HBO, not a chosen few fighters.

If you promote the fighters, people want to see the fighters. “The sport” doesn’t have a good reputation anymore, maybe you can get people attracted to the fighters and their stories. I actually find it to be pretty wise given the general perception of boxing (it’s fixed, it’s crooked, it’s dead, and so on)

I see your point, but still, I feel like there’s got to be a better way. Maybe if they just negotiated the best fights ad hoc and promoted the stories of any fighter on their network who’s good, instead of committing to fighters in advance. I feel like this is more like the advertising a shoe company would do than a normal sports network.

And I can see that point, too. They got pretty well burned (by themselves) on this Dawson deal. Not that I’m not excited for Dawson-Johnson tomorrow, because I am, but because neither of their two fights in their incredibly expensive two-fight deal have made him any bigger of a star (two rematches of fights Showtime already ran) and he wasn’t a star when they got him on the deal. He could just as easily zip back over to Showtime if he wanted to and HBO isn’t willing to bid against themselves again. I kind of wish HBO would just let it all hang out with him and really hope they’ll go after a possible Pascal-Dawson fight should they both win upcoming bouts, because that’s what the WBC wants anyway. Both are good young fighters.
