If you’re a fan of both boxing and MMA, there is no comparison between Fedor-Rogers and Dawson-Johnson II. I’m watching this fight because I’m obligated to watch boxing.

I don’t know. It might end in 15 seconds and I don’t like comparing MMA fights to boxing fights at all. Totally different animals. But it’s a bigger, far more important fight featuring the #1 man in a sport on network TV. This is a rematch that was basically forced to happen in Connecticut. I think Dawson-Johnson II is a really good fight (the first one was a really good fight), but Fedor-Rogers is far more important and exciting.

Fedor on network television in the United States is incredibly important.

And Mousasi/Sok
Miller/Shields
Werdum/Silva

by Meshuggeth on Nov 7, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

that is to be determined....

its supremely likely that this wont touch the number kimbo vs thompson did, and both those guys cant fight.

Fedor is completely unproven as a draw in America. And I love Brett “the grim” but no one knows who he is

by Duan on Nov 7, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

Right, so now people will know who he was more than they did before. Getting the #1 fighter on network TV is never a bad thing.

certainly a good thing, yes

I just think u are overstating the importance of this. Its not necessarily the best fighters who do the best business. this is not a fight anyone was clamoring to see.

For my money, the competitive bout between two top guys is more significant.

by Duan on Nov 7, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

No one was clamoring for anything involving Johnson or Dawson, to be fair. I mean if you want to talk about non-draws, Dawson’s last two fights combined didn’t draw 2000 fans in Las Vegas.

Combat sports on Network TV is ungodly important I say…

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

I'm sorry, but when you say there is no comparison, which are you favouring?

I’m a (very) casual MMA fan/watcher, and a mad boxing fan.

Should I know who Rogers is? Cos I’m pretty stoked about the Road Warrior’s chance at redemption, to be honest.

The MMA show is far bigger. Rogers is a banger who can hit like a truck. Fedor’s the best fighter in the world. It’s much more important than Dawson-Johnson II. I’m really excited for the HBO show, too. It’s a great weekend for fighting all in all.

Fair enough. I haven’t really liked MMA since the days of Royce Gracie and Kazushi Sakuraba….

I might have to have a look at the MMA tonight too, then. :)

In fact, you can pretty much pick a point in time where my MMA/UFC interest went kaput....

and it coincided with Sakuraba kicking the shit out of Royce…. I was gutted that day.

I only watch the freak show fighters now, for interest/curiosity, like Sapp, Choi, and a few others.

And Fedor, of course. But I watch Fedor for the same reason I watch gold when Woods is playing, and tennis when Federer is playing, and I even watched the Tour de France this year cos Lance Armstrong was in it again….

Angulo-Yorgey R1

Ah, Manny Steward’s there.

Yorgey throwing in combinations, not landing much. Angulo shooting to the body, now upstairs. Both are throwing plenty of punches in the first minute. Nice right at the end of a 1-2 from Yorgey. Jab lands for Yorgey, and he makes Angulo miss. Nice right over the top by Yorgey now. Left hook by Yorgey. Right by Angulo doesn’t get there. Even Yorgey’s making him look really slow.

Right by Angulo lands this time. Sharp jab by Yorgey. BIG flurry by Angulo, a couple of beautiful right hands and some body work. Right by Angulo lands again. Yorgey really owned the first part of this round, Angulo the second part. Angulo is pushing him around a good bit. Good action round.

Angulo 10-9

Good combination by Yorgey, right hand really sticks. BEAUTIFUL uppercut by Yorgey, but Angulo slams back with a right hand. ANGULO UNLOADING ON YORGEY IN THE CORNER AND NOW HE’S DOWN! OH DID HE GET BLOWN UP WITH A SHOT THERE! WOOF!

Yorgey complains about a shot to the back of the head. Let’s see if he can recover, because if I know Angulo he’s gonna pounce.

And yes he is. BIG right by Angulo! AND ANOTHER! LEFT HAND! YORGEY STUMBLING ALL OVER THE RING! They’re not going to count. Should have.

Angulo goes right back at him BODY SHOT IS ON POINT! Jesus, how’s he up? He’s getting killed in there. Right hand! Left hook! Angulo is ALL OVER Yorgey! Just a total battering! Three FOUR FIVE SIX RIGHT HANDS! MY GOD!

Close but clear? Absolute toss-up? Robbery?

2. You can argue that it was close but clear for Johnson
3. I scored it a draw, but felt if anyone won, it was Glen Johnson

Dawson-Johnson R1

Johnson shoots a right hand in after Dawson starts flicking the jab out. If Chad thinks tonight will be easier than last time, he’s clearly wrong. The first 30 seconds will tell you that. Johnson is bringing heavy pressure again. Right to the body by Johnson. Both guys throwing and not landing clean. Johnson lands another right, now Dawson slings a left to the body. And another left to the body.

Dawson with two nice sneaky shots that they totally ignore to tell me a tale of Glen Johnson. Dawson looks really sharp offensively this round. He’s making Johnson look extremely slow. Great round for Dawson.

Dawson 10-9

Dawson-Johnson R2

Dawson working a jab very consistently, staying at perfect range to not get hit by Johnson’s jab. But Glen seems to have taken that left hand to some degree. Dawson tries to counter a lunging Johnson and misses. Dawson zips right over Johnson with a left hand, called a “solid left hand by Dawson” from Lampley. And THERE’S a good left from Dawson.

WTF Chad, pull your pants up. Or get that guard lowered. Whatever’s going on.

Dawson sneaks in another left, not flush but in there. Dawson with a great flurry near the end of the round, with a snappy right hook!

What's great that Dawson is doing in this fight

that he hasn’t done in a long time, is he’s actually trading. He’s confident enough to take a punch and throw while the other guy is also throwing. I can’t remember him doing that since teh Adamek fight. Lately, he’d been covering up whenever his opponent throws and waiting to throw himself.

Dawson-Johnson R3

Dawson does look great but Lampley seems very, very in love with him tonight. SIX JABS. SEVEN. EIGHT. NINE. It’s not like they’re all landing. Johnson trying to go the body, can’t reach there. Dawson’s picking him apart so far. Right to the chest by Johnson. Nice combination work again by Dawson, landing to the body and getting blocked upstairs. He’s REALLY making Johnson look old so far. Dawson DRILLS him to the body with a right hook. Johnson back with a right to the body.

Four punches land for Dawson there. He ends the round throwing, and Johnson tries to war with him, but just cannot keep up with Dawson’s speed. This is getting one-sided.

Dawson-Johnson R4

Dawson is so, so much faster. Johnson is looking off balance frequently, not able to establish any rhythm, and just isn’t landing a whole lot of anything at all. Johnson shoots to the body, again he’s short. Dawson is jabbing tremendously, working the body, he’s in and out easily, and just owning the ring. Johnson might have to go for broke sooner rather than later.

Dawson-Johnson R7

Dawson almost toying with Johnson stylistically. I mean you never toy with Johnson, but he’s slapping him around. Johnson hasn’t been beaten as convincingly as this has been in a long, long time, if ever.

Johnson is having a horrendous time, and now Lampley says that Bute is a draw at light heavyweight. Does anyone at HBO know what division Bute’s in?

Dawson-Johnson R8

This has become a pretty mundane fight to watch, really. Dawson’s just kind of putting on a clinic out there. He knows he’s not going to knock Papa Glen out, so he’s not really trying. It’s very smart, but I can’t lie and say it’s exciting. This is moving quickly toward I feared the fight would be: A wide, fairly dull Dawson decision. He’s outlanding him and landing better shots. Johnson is working really hard and won’t quit, but he’s not in this fight right now.

I'm just learning this stuff

but I think part of the reason MMA punches look so awkward and sloppy to boxing fans has to do with the need to keep a greater range to prevent takedowns. Hence you have to “lunge” by boxing standards. Is this right, MMA fans?

Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"

by Matt Miller on Nov 7, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

but that was lunging in even by MMA standards

I dont think the lung in so much as their stance is changed a little. That makes it look a little weird.

by TXroyal on Nov 7, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

A straight boxing 1-2 would leave someone vulnerable to a takedown

But that lunge left him so far out of position that if he had missed, it would have left him vulnerable to something much worse.

For those who know who this guy is....

Karelin v. Fedor. Give Karelin a few months to work on strikes, who wins?

Yeah, that's why I'm asking...

Karelin was an absolutely phenomenal athlete, and his discipline was similar to that used in MMA. I’ve never seen a big man move like Karelin, and watching Fedor tonight, my previous statement holds.

Lesnar was a 1-time NCAA champion.

Karelin was an international champion who won every single match he wrestled for 13 years. I’m a huge Lesnar fan, but Karelin would have killed him in international wrestling. It wouldn’t have even been close.

If Gardner can beat Karelin, So could Lesner

1) Karelin was far past his prime when Gardner beat him

2) The Gardner match was a fluke. I was proud as hell when that happened, but that match was essentially like a college football team winning in double overtime on a false start.

There is absolutely no chance that a prime Karelin loses to either Gardner or Lesnar.

Gardner BARELY beat a 37 year old Karelin

And he only won because of a BS penalty. That really should have been a 0-0 fight. He went undefeated for 12 years, and when he was shot, he barely lost

he was only 33, so that is past your prime

It was his fourth Olympics

and your point is?

he was 33 and lost, so because he was undefeated for 13 years, it was his 4th olympics and his 1st loss. then he must be past his prime.

i dont buy it, if they fought 10 times Karelin would win 99.9% of the time. Just not that one time. and that means he can be and was beat.

Valuev would have Ko’ed Fedor in a boxing match… :P

Ugly punch but it works in the MMA….

It was nice to see Fedor get tested but he really underestimated the reach of Rogers.

I did like his resolve. Not that many people in MMA or boxing can close the show with blood dripping down their face.

Once again, not watching much MMA

I was MUCH more impressed by Machida. Maybe more boring, but seemed to me to be much more technically sound.

I watched it again today....

Sober, outside the heat of the moment, and came away with the exact same card I had on fight night. 114-113 Cotto, and if any round could have gone the other way, it was the 10th, which I gave to Clottey.

made me a believer again, though i’m not in denial. he’ll never be an elite fighter but still i’ll gladly tune in to watch him fight whenever he’s on
