Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Timothy Bradley v. Lamont Peterson

Tonight's Showtime Championship Boxing is a very good double-header to close out a superb 2009 from the network. The action begins at 9pm ET.

Note: We WILL be doing the HBO card, too, which starts at 10:15 ET. At about 10pm, we'll put up a new thread for the HBO fights. Our plan is to do all four live fights between the two shows, but there's a good chance we'll miss the Victor Ortiz-Antonio Diaz fight on HBO in favor of the Showtime main event's finish. All in all we're getting what amounts to a really good PPV (sans great main event) out of these two cards tonight.

Just as a reminder

Pascal-Diaconu II replay on ESPN Deportes in 10 minutes. Despite being immature in many ways, I hear Pascal showed one of the better displays of fortitude since Danny Williams knocked out Mark Potter with one working arm.

Bradley Close UD.

Peterson’s height and reach give Bradley trouble at points, but Bradley basically just outworks him in the end.

That's kind of what I'm thinking

I also predict lots of grunting. Bradley’s a bit of a grunter himself, and Peterson’s as bad as anyone out there.

Pascal pulled away in the end

Bur The first 5 rounds were a war, and even when it got wider, there was still the suspense of whether Pascal could use his right arm enough to keep Diaconu off of him.

Pascal's right arm seems barely functional at this point

He can hold it up to block, but he only threw two right handed punches that whole round, and both of them looked really stunted. Probably still won the round though, as Diaconu slowed down.

One of those weekends. Was up working until noon, then took a nap for a few hours, now working again with boxing in the background. Then I probably get to work until 4 again, and I have to be in the office tomorrow for a conference call at 9. It sucks, but it pays the bills.

Darchinyan-Rojas R1

Small ring. Two southpaws. Ring is 17’ says Bernstein.

Big left by Rojas to start. Rojas looking to time Darchinyan. That’s obvious in the first 40 seconds. Left to the body by Rojas. Rojas throwing with intent and fighting at distance. Darchinyan lunges and clips Rojas with a right hand. Darchinyan turns it into a brawl late in the round, and pops him with a good left!

This ring is going to lead to a fight.

Rojas 10-9

Round 1

Ok, we’re off.

Nice left early by Rojas. Vic with a sold right. Vic trying to get inside of Rojas, who is pretty long. Big left uppercut by Vic, now they are winging it. Close late, I like Rojas

10-9 Rojas.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Dec 12, 2009 9:16 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Darchinyan-Rojas R2

Rojas trying very hard to stay at range. Darchinyan wings some big lefts, and now he gets caught with one in return after missing. Rojas just short on a long left. Overhand left is just short now. Darchinyan misses to the body, and Darchinyan caught off balance and nearly gets creamed for it.

Clash of heads. Bernstein points out that Vic isn’t using his jab, which is what had him on such a roll. And he’s right.

Rojas clips him with a left, then follows up with two more shots. Darchinyan with a HUGE BODY SHOT AND DOWN GOES ROJAS

THAT’LL DO IT, FOLKS!

GOODNIGHT!

Vic Darchinyan KO-2

Sounds like a plan

Although I think Donaire is just one of those bad style matchups for Vic. I know I’m in the minority by not rating Donaire that highly (I think someone like Montiel would kick his ass, for instance, and there’s a reason he’s never faced a good boxer), but stylistically there’s not much Vic can do to beat him unless he just catches him with a big shot.

Bradley-Peterson R1

Small ring could really help Bradley. Both digging toward the body early, and Lamont hits him with a short little left hook to the ear on the inside. These guys are WINGING shots to the body. Both throwing strong to start. Small ring might also make this damn fun.

Bradley is making this a rough fight on the inside early. Peterson finding some range now, flicking his jab and throwing a long right hand. Bradley with a left hook to the body, AND NOW HE JUST DRILLED PETERSON! Peterson may be a bit hurt, and Bradley SLIPS coming at him! That was a HUGE right. Peterson is hurt — desperately trying to hang on. ANOTHER big right landed.

Peterson throwing back now. Crowd very much behind Bradley. Not the biggest venue, but he’s building an audience here, and there’s a lot to be said for that. That could make him able to travel to Los Angeles for bigger fights.

Bradley 10-9

Bradley coming out aggressively. He’s got a lot of snap on his jab. Bradley looks REALLY good landing that right hand. Peterson felt that one too. Now Bradley switches southpaw — heeeyyy, how about that?

Bradley is dominating this round. HUGE RIGHT BY BRADLEY AND PETERSON BACKS UP! Peterson is just getting tagged out there. Bradley finding the right again! Clips him with another! Peterson’s hands drop! Peterson hanging on! Huge round for Bradley — he looks like a monster out there.

Bradley is just starting to take over. Peterson is a good boxer and he looks pretty good out there, really, but Bradley so far is busting him up with the right hand. Good left hook by Peterson and DOWN GOES PETERSON ON A RIGHT HAND! I’LL BE DAMNED!

He’s a little woozy. He’s going to fight on.

Peterson hanging on. And he looks to have recovered OK. Peterson has made a huge mistake letting this stay close, even with the ring being small. Bradley is really ripping on him, and Peterson is starting to fire some huge shots back inside. Goddamn but this is turning into a bit of a war. This is getting REALLY good, really fast.

Wow, Peterson is digging in, and so is Bradley. Peterson hurts Bradley just a bit. BRADLEY TAKING HUGE SHOTS TO THE BODY! Left hook! Peterson storming back into this fight!

Vicious round

I’m actually giving Bradley a 10-9 there despite the KD. Without the KD, I think it’s a 10-10 round, where Bradley dominated the first half and Peterson dominated the second.

30-27 Bradley.

Bradley-Peterson R4

Bradley starting fast, throwing both hands at Peterson’s high and tight guard. Peterson stumbles a bit as they exchange, but he comes right back. These two are hungry. Peterson starting to back Bradley down a little bit, but Bradley starts coming forward again. Peterson ruling on the inside now. Bradley misses a left hook badly. Peterson is starting to take over. Bradley looking a bit tired.

Bradley with a good left that sneaks through the guard. About a minute left in the round. Right hand by Bradley. Bradley starting to come back now. Long right by Peterson barely misses. These two are leaving it in the ring for sure. Peterson again loads up the right and misses. Peterson getting a bit of swelling over his eye I think.

Good damn round. Good damn fight.

Bradley with a big right and left hook, but both are blocked or miss. That was a highlight reel combo in his head. Bradley pops him with a left counter, and now Bradley is starting to stick and move a bit more. Thudding right from Peterson after a series of good work by Bradley, and then Tim goes back to the body. BIG RIGHT BY PETERSON! Bradley takes it very well! Wow, that was on the mark.

Bradley trying to time Peterson now, which he’s done much of the round. Bradley goes southpaw again, and now gets Peterson out of position. They end the round digging away in close.

Bradley-Peterson R6

Bradley starting to wing shots with Peterson a bit out of sorts, but nothing comes of it. Bradley, I think, is starting to take firm control. He’s busy, he’s effective, and he’s landing good shots. Peterson has slowed a bit and is having a hard time finding Bradley, who keeps turning him around. Peterson digs with a couple nice body shots. Short hook from Bradley lands hard, but Peterson comes through it. Bradley loads up and misses.

Peterson is going to need to make an adjustment at this point. He’s starting to get outworked in a big way, and Bradley is making him miss a bunch.

Bradley-Peterson R7

Bradley is making the small ring look big the last couple of rounds. Peterson is having some trigger issues now, as Bradley is constantly in motion. Body work by Bradley. Hard body shot by Peterson. Right hand by Bradley lands upstairs. Bradley is taking over pretty firmly, in my view. Peterson is starting to lose his way in this one, but it’s still entertaining.

Bradley-Peterson R8

Peterson doing his best, but it looks like Bradley is just a better pro at this point. Bradley starting to cook about halfway into the round, and Peterson gets on his bike after feeling some power. He had to hit reset there. Peterson connects on a left hook to the body. Bradley is still bouncing around, moving all over, throwing, and Peterson has slowed significantly. He hasn’t been able to cut him off, get him going where he wants him, or connect big much. There’s a left hook by Peterson that doesn’t land. But it’s Bradley who takes another round. This one might be essentially in the bank now.

10-9 Bradley, 78-73 Bradley. This is a masterful performance — and it’s not like Peterson is doing bad either. It’s just a magnificent display by Bradley that’s overwhelming.

I'd like to see him keep facing top guys

There are a lot of interesting style matchups in the weight class. While I’m convinced he would beat Hatton or Malignaggi, I’d like to see him in with a puncher like Maidana/Urango, or with a quick boxer like Khan. Khan-Bradley could be a hell of a matchup, but it wouldn’t happen until Bradley gets a bigger name.

Bradley is starting to really do the deed in there. He’s fight going backwards very well, and getting the job done offensively at the same time. He’s making Peterson chase, and also is leading the action. Peterson is getting clipped mostly this round, but not landing much of his own. Another round for Bradley on my card.

Heavy body shots by Bradley early. You can hear them ringing out like they’re snapping into a heavy bag. Peterson letting his hands go. Bradley with a sneaky right, then some flurrying. Southpaw now for Bradley, then back to orthodox after some pawing. Peterson going to the body again, mixing it up. Peterson is throwing all he has, and there’s a big right by Bradley.

Peterson is doing everything he can. I have this very, very wide for Timmy obviously, but Peterson has proven he can fight tonight. Bradley’s just proven he’s really f’n good. Peterson stays aggressive this entire round, but he just doesn’t have that sort of fight-changing power that you need at this point.
