we're almost surely going to miss the Victor Ortiz fight

If anyone wants to pick up the RBR, go for it. But if you have Showtime, tune in to Bradley-Peterson. It’s a hell of a scrap so far.

Feeling out early. Ortiz hanging out near the ropes. Diaz with a nice left. Lotsa pawing jabs. Nice shot by Diaz. Oritz misses a big lead hook. Ortiz gets the better of a quick exchange. Diaz moving forward, Diaz moving around a lot but not throwing a ton.

10-9 Ortiz. Close, not much action, but Ortiz landed the few meaningful shots.

Diaz gets up and looks okay. Ortiz teeing off, throwing combos, most of it is landing, Diaz holds on. Ortiz slows down, Ortiz lands a lunging shot, Diaz counters, Oritz counter-counters. Another nice exchange, Diaz lands, Ortiz lands more.

Ortiz dancing and not throwing. Diaz not fast enough to catch up. Nice straight right by Ortiz. Couple of shots land for Diaz. Counter lefts by Ortiz, two in a row. Jab by Ortiz. Make it two. WIld Diaz flurry lands nothing. Lead right uppercut lands for Ortiz. Cut on the left eye of Diaz. Diaz throws a combo, Ortiz blocks and dodges.

Diaz’s corner stops the fight. Good call; Diaz wanted to keep going, but Diaz couldn’t get anything going, and the cut was a nasty one over the left eyelid, dripping into the eye.

Ortiz lands 94-47, 47% to 18% landed. 49% on power shots, 63-32. Except for that one punch before he knocked Diaz down, the worst trouble Ortiz was in was when the ref tripped him. Still, he looked tentative, afraid to throw, didn’t seem to want to engage. Good win, I suppose, and Diaz was never really in the fight, but still not an especially impressive showing for Ortiz.

Diaz-Malignaggi R1

Paulie jabbing to start. Nobody landing much clean for the first two minutes. Diaz shooting left hooks to the body that aren’t landing. Paulie with a nice 1-2. One of the few hard rights (hard being a loosely used word) you’ll see Paulie land. Malignaggi is doing exactly what he did the first fight.

Big “Paulie” chant goes up all of a sudden, and he plays to it.

Big “Diaz” chant goes up after Paule scores another 1-2. Diaz charging, Paulie making it mean nothing. Diaz with a glancing left hand, crowd explodes. These folks are hot.

Paulie is really dominating this fight for the first two rounds. He’s really fast, really crisp, and showing no worry in there. I maybe have never seen him look so loose and confident. He looks terrific. Diaz is cut already, too. He’s going to cut in every fight for the rest of his career.

Diaz-Malignaggi R3

Diaz RUSHING with a TON of hooks and some right hands! Good way to close out the first minute, and now he’s back in the fight. He’s got to bully Paulie. He cannot box him. He’s not fast enough. But after that, Paulie starts taking over again with his movement and his jabbing. Mixing in his right hand, too. Guess he hasn’t yet broken it tonight.

They trade a bit near the bell. Another Paulie round — and clear. That one little flurry for Diaz does not win the round.

Diaz starting to use his jab this round. Paulie, though, is just outquicking him. The fans are going back and forth like pro wrestling crowds did in the independent wrestling glory days in the middle of this decade. (Exposing my old wrestling nerddom — Chicago is a good wrasslin’ city, too.)

Diaz, though, is getting some work done this round, and it’s easily the closest of the fight. He’s even winning it by my estimation. Paulie with a left hook and a potshot right near the end, but I give this one to Juan.

Diaz rushing him at the start of the round, getting him in the corner, and then Paulie slips out. Diaz unleashing his hooks, and there’s a good right. Right and a left hook for Diaz! Paulie trying to prove something now it looks like. But then he resets, flicks the jab, and gets back to work.

Right to the body and a left hook clips Diaz upstairs. Good stuff from Paulie there. Paulie back on the move, making Diaz miss, and snipering from the outside. Toughest round of the fight to score for me.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Dec 12, 2009 11:38 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Diaz-Malignaggi R8

YES! Lennox gets in his yearly and obligatory ill-fitting Muhammad Ali reference! JOY TO THE WORLD!

Diaz warned about a low shot, and Paulie paws at his groin a bit. Now he’s posturing to the crowd, re: his junk. Malignaggi is really pro wrasslin’ it up with this crowd.

Paulie is just out-working him. Diaz starts winging, but he’s landing nothing. Paulie more accurate and actually alnding the better shots. There’s a left ot the body by Diaz, but it comes after some decent stuff from Paulie.

I pray the crowd isn’t influencing the judges in this fight, but it’s not exactly the most illustrious crew. But this was a Diaz round.

Diaz may want to think about that legal career

He just doesn’t look nearly as explosive and aggressive as he used to, and frankly, the lightweight division was extremely weak at the time he cleared it out. I’m not sure he’s a top 5 guy in the current lightweight division. If he wants to keep making big bucks, great, but I could understand if he doesn’t want to risk losing his facilities.

I felt this way about Diaz when we talked about him during the PBF / Marquez fight.

He looks fierce in his expression when he throws, but he is really not much of a threat at all from a KO perspective. He hits lighter than Paulie at this weight!

If they did fight, and they obviously won’t, I think K the Younger beats K the Elder at this point in their careers. Vitali is too slow and predictable for his lil brother at this point. Wladimir’s superior speed and technique would overcome his brother’s better beard (note the alliteration, lol).

Diaz-Malignaggi R9

Paulie is leading so much of the action. This isn’t quite the fight the first one was, but it’s flying by, too. There’s something about Diaz that isn’t “right” — Brick just mentioned it above. He’s not aggressive enough, not explosive, doesn’t seem to want it as much as he used to. He ran over Popo Freitas, but Popo was finished mentally. He ran over Julio Diaz, but we found out after that that just about anyone decent was beating Julio.

The blood is starting to flow on Diaz, too.

Diaz is counted down late in the round — I don’t get that. Glove touched the ground apparently. Oof, bad call, but gotta be scored. NO, DON’T come in behind the jab. Paulie’s jab is better, longer and quicker. He’ll just beat Diaz to the punch and not let him come inside. He needs to move inside using head movement and body punching.

He needs to brawl and get inside

He just has no idea how to get Diaz to do it effectively against Paulie. He should have been aiming for elbows and shoulders in the early rounds to slow down his jab a bit. THEN he might have been able to get inside behind a jab. But over and over, when Diaz throws his jab, Paulie lands his jab right over it, and Paulie’s jab is way crisper than Diaz’s.

Round 12

10-9 Diaz, 115-112 Paulie

by The Boxer Rebellion on Dec 12, 2009 11:54 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Diaz-Malignaggi R12

Diaz needs a stoppage. Or at least he BETTER need a stoppage.

Paulie warned for throwing his elbow, something he does frequently, but hasn’t really done tonight. It’s like the referee remembered in round 12 that Paulie throws his elbow. Diaz is throwing what he’s got. Malignaggi is there to meet him, and he’s getting tagged. Diaz is letting everything go, and Malignaggi comes back! A minute to go!

Malignaggi pops back with a left after Diaz gets a right hand. Diaz thuds him, Paulie throws back AND THEY END IT WINGING SHOT!

Another good fight. And again, I felt Paulie won.
