Short left to the chin did him in

Actually, a similar punch to what Darchinyan knocked Rojas out with.

Since this fight went longer than any of his fights have gone in a couple years, and since he was fighting a southpaw, some of his defensive flaws were a bit more apparent. He does have a tendency to pull straight back too much, and while he gets out of the way, he might have problems with that when he moves up a weight class. Also, sometimes when he throws his left hook, he puts so much weight behind it that he falls out of position, leaving him prone to a right handed counter while he’s off balance.

Not that they’ll ever fight each other, but based in part on these problems, and in part on Hasegawa’s general predictability, I think Yohnny Perez would beat him head to head. I still think he beats Montiel, Agbeko, Sidirenko, etc. I have no idea about Moreno, as I haven’t seen him fight enough. But considering there are about 10-15 decent names in the division, I hope Hasegawa gets back to fighting them again (his last two opponents have been dangerous, but subpar), or moves up to challenge for Nishioka’s belt, either of which would really justify a P4P spot.

As an aside, the music on the WBC’s website is dreadfully bad.

What I thought was impressive

was how quickly he reloaded that left hand. The first one caught Perez flush and it was followed up by that crispy short left before Perez realized he got hit with the first one.
