Buck Smith
I just rewatched Cotto/Margarito, and then had a look at Margarito's record.... this guy's name came up quite early in his career, and I had a look out of curiosity since the number of fights he's had is unusual in recent years.
I'm genuinely puzzled by how many NC's there are on his record, and was hoping someone could explain what would cause that? I mean, the guy has had about 300 fights if you include all the NC's!!
Maybe Brick could explain this one, but anyone's opinion is welcome.....

Maybe this is it
So some old school boxing rules have the stipulation that if the fight goes all 12 rounds (or however long the fight is scheduled for) without a KO, then the fight is ruled a no contest. Seems plausible in some poorer regions where the availability of judges is less prevalent.
I considered that.
But surely they must have a ref, and on a local level the ref calls the fight.
Some people are acting like Pacquiao should be expected to have just gone, "Yeah sure, let’s do something I’ve never done before because your dad made some dumbass baseless comment."

Not in the US

He was accused of fixing a lot of fights, of basically bullshitting his way through rounds with his opponents outside of commission coverage because the fights didn’t really matter anyway. He fought a lot of bums and a lot of his bouts were considered exhibitions on some level.

So why are some wins or losses and others are No Contests?
Surely all fights that were regarded as suspicious should be struck off his record, or none of them?
Or am I missing something really obvious?

And Tyson did exhibitions too, and they aren't on his Boxrec record?

That’s because those were always clearly noted as exhibitions. A lot of Buck’s are questionable. Were they? No one’s really certain, as they weren’t commission fights.
Or at least that’s as much as I’ve been able to figure out. I was interested in his record about a year or so ago, too, just happened to stumble upon it for whatever reason, and I dug around but got no concrete answers. Just speculation from folks who remembered seeing him now and then.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought it strange.
I even considered not posting this on here, because I thought it might be something really obvious that everyone else knew and I didn’t….
Maybe an interview, SC? ;)

The unuuals number of “nc’s” simply reflets fights that were schedule but not made.I knew/ know Buck and he finished his career badly. Stayed on too long, but he was one of the real barnstormers—an actual group of guys who toured the midwest in a van and took fights whereever they could get them. I covered this at some length in my second book (I think).
