Boxer Moms
Another WaPo boxing profile, this time of two middle-aged female boxers. Both met through boxing, and when one couldn't find an over-35 opponent to step in the ring with her, the other decided, hey, why not. And now they're best friends -- when they're not beating each other to a pulp. You really get a feel, in pieces like this, of how boxing is for the casual participant. Most folks who box never become world champs. I bet most never turn pro. For most, it's just a way to work off some aggression, have something to do, get some exercise, and if you're lucky, make a few friends.

Great story
Friendships through boxing are like no other. Nothing beats going toe to toe and staring into someone’s soul to develop a true friendship and respect.
I used to have mixed emotions about girls in gyms wanting to box. But how can you deny anyone like Barb and Marlow who find freedom through boxing each other? I can appreciate that and I certainly applaud these two fighters. I loved the ref’s “old-school” comment – spoke alot about them both.
I reluctantly sparred with a girl once and once only. A ginger-haired young thing with pony-tails and a mouthguard. She was an experienced, well trained amateur but hey she still had boobs and a vagina! I didn’t want to hit her and thought I’d just catch her punches and move her around the ring. From the first bell she attacked me like a fcukin’ wildcat and cracked me with fast, straight punches. I had to open up just to keep her off me, didn’t slow her down much either.
If I ever have a daughter I’d want her to be just like my sparring partner.
