The more I listen to the position of the Mayweathers, Richard Schaefer, and Golden Boy on the issue of drug testing, I began to think that maybe its not Floyd who's pushing this issue like we think he is. Mayweather may be a controversial figure, but he's never crossed over into these kind of allegations. He's mainly stuck to mind games. All the hot rhetoric has come from Golden Boy, and I wonder given Oscar de la Hoya's recent comments of nearly accusing Pacquiao of steroids that perhaps its the Golden Boy himself with an ax to grind against Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao. I know its probably a wild conspiracy theory, but I can't imagine Oscar was proud of the way his career ended taking a beating at the hands of a guy who - to that point - had seen his best days at featherweight. Is Oscar channeling his resentment towards Pacquiao into his negotiations for this fight? I can't help but believe that if he can Oscar is gonna look for his pound of flesh and find an excuse for the absolute beating he took from Pacquiao, forcing him to basically retire on his stool.
Boxing has to have this fight. i know three kinds of people - combat sports fans, MMA fans alone, and general sports fans. All of them have asked me about Pacquiao-Mayweather, all of them told me they want to see this fight, and most of them have never seen Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather fight! It would be a tremendous blow for boxing if this fight does not happen. Its the first time two fighters at the top of their game, fully marketable, with a truly interested mainstream sports media paying close attention ready to fight. This might be the best fight pound for pound since Leonard-Hagler.
Lets hope it happens, I hope I'm wrong, but I can't help but wonder if Oscar and Golden Boy are looking for excuse to embarrass Pacquiao not for Floyd but for Oscar himself.
