In the meantime: The next fight for Floyd

So it looks like the super fight between Floyd "Money May" and Manny Pacquiao is going to be delayed until at least Sept. because of Manny's political ambitions.  However, this gives the boxing fans a unique opportunity to speculate on the next fight for PBF.  There are a couple options at both his natural welterweight and at the lighter jr. welterweight (fight to be held at some catchweight above jr. welter).

Welterweight

Option #1.

Joshua Clottey

This man ain't doing anything and is coming off an impressive loss to Miguel Cotto.  When Cotto was not getting physically dominated by Clottey he seemed to win the round decisively and therefore could be easy pickings for Floyd if he really avoids him.  Also answers the doubters saying that Floyd never fights a true welter, because Clottey is a huge welter!  Even though Clottey is extremely dangerous i think Floyd easily takes care of business here.

Option #2

Antonio Margarito

This sounds crazy but hear me out on this one.  Toni is looking for a fight wants it to be fairly high profile.  He is looking to get his license back in the range of Feb.  If all goes well, Toni will look for an opponent for around the time that Mayweather was going to fight Pacman.  Toni has a huge chin so no one will blame Floyd, when he doesn't get a KO of the stone-chinned devil from Tijiuana!  Floyd could have easily beat this man when Toni wa in his prime much less having a year off from boxing.  Floyd in an easy decision in this one.

Option #3

Devon Alexander

Although a Don king fighter, Floyd might want to pick on the smaller man with a title.  Devon does not have much experience but he did show good talent in his last fight vs. the ever awkward Junior Witter.  Its a speed vs. speed matchup where Floyd will hold the advantage.  Similar styles where Floyd is the better and therefore will pull off the easy victory.

These fighters are my top 3 at least somewhat realistic options for FMM.  Please continue the speculation below with more options and likelihoods.

I would hate to see him fight Clottey simply because of how boring that fight would be. Of course I would also like Clottey to get a break after his run of bad luck recently but not enough to endure two very defensive fighters doing very little.

Who do you think would be the tougher challenge; Alexander or Margarito. I don’t actually think margarito will be able to land clean of Mayweather and would get embarassed ala Corrales if they fought. That’s rather obvious due to his lack of speed in terms of both handspeed and footwork.

Alexander probably wouldn’t be much harder, for different reasons, but would probably be more interesitng and exciting. You say it would be speed vs speed and that could mean a fairly fun Mayweather fight like the one he had with Judah.

Out of those realistic possibilities, Alexander is the best fight. Floyd still dismantles him, but it should be a little more interesting because Floyd might open up more versus a speed guy with not too much power. But too be fair also, this is a tune-up fight meant to keep Floyd busy and on the minds of the general public.

Don’t forget, Mayweather has name-dropped Saul Alvarez and Ricky Hatton.

I thought it was Matthew Hatton.

Richard Schaefer brought up Canelo, not Mayweather.

yeah, Floyd routs Clottey

And it’s perhaps more boring than Mayweather-Marquez.

and thats why its a realistic option for a Floyd keep busy fight

Maybe I'm going crazy

But how about Mayweather-Pavlik? A fight that seems really tough, but Pavlik’s already proven he has trouble with guys who move well.

I'm not sure

if Mayweather would be comfortable enough at that weight to fight Pavlik. It would still be cool though.

All dependent on catchweight

If Floyd can make Kelly boil down, then its a good possibility. Looking at the DLH fight Floyd only came in at 150, so he really can’t be going up in weight classes because he is pretty naturally a welter.

by Waldo Rastel on Dec 3, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

He could walk in at 150

IIRC, you just need to be within 10 pounds of the lower limit.

But I’m pretty sure that giving up 15+ pounds is not on Floyd’s priority list for a tune up fight. Keep in mind that this is supposed to be easy, henceforth catchweight to make Pavlik even slower.

I'm actually not sure if you're joking.

Let’s put it this way; when I read the post, and then looked to see who wrote it, your name was bottom of the list….

Are you serious?

I would like to see him with the winner or Williams Martinez

either one would be a excellent fight. I just want to see him fight some one that comes forward and throws punches. Juan Diaz would be interesting but that feels like picking on a smaller guy. Maybe Kermit Cintron or Carlos Quintana would be decent fights against natural welters.

Doesn’t Floyd supposedly have a hit list which was part of his reason for unretiring? I wonder who is on his list.

by TXroyal on Dec 4, 2009 12:27 AM EST reply actions

What about Yuri Foreman just to anger Roach

that would be great bc I think Floyd would beat him and then that puts a stop to Pac-mans plans for another title in a new weight class.

by TXroyal on Dec 4, 2009 12:32 AM EST up reply actions

Floyd is going to need a tune up, not an ass-whooping. Yuri is going to go zero hunting!

by Waldo Rastel on Dec 4, 2009 12:50 AM EST up reply actions

Name recognition. Both Margarito and Clottey have it to at least some extent. Alexander is also just not doing anything, has a belt, and would take a terrible take just to get a chance at Floyd. In terms of recognition, Cintron, Williams, Martinez, and Quintana are the definition of no-names. Its a little harsh for those guys but thats the nature of the business. Also would be a little quick of a turnaround for the winner of Williams-Martinez if Floyd wants to keep the March 13 date.

by Waldo Rastel on Dec 4, 2009 12:55 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah but Alexander’s belt wouldn’t be on the line since it’s at 140

More of the ’He’s a champion’ label than the actual strap. Carries at least a little bit of legitimacy.

by Waldo Rastel on Dec 4, 2009 3:36 AM EST up reply actions

I dunno — a lot of folks are pretty savvy, and even those that aren’t would be told Alexander is fairly unproven. Mayweather’s cocky enough to start pointing out that Alexander’s really never beaten anyone.

Actually head to head, as wrong as the timing for Devon would be in many ways, Alexander’s one of the (very) few guys I think can hang with Mayweather in the speed department. That dude is crazy fast when he really lets it go.

This is supposed to be a keep-busy fight to make Mayweather stick around in the pubic discourse, not necessarily the best fight out there but he should win it and it should be a good fight. Alexander can make Floyd look good with all that speed in there combined with the fact that Devon doesn’t exactly have stone hand, especially at a higher weight class. Since he’s a speedy southpaw there may be a Judah repeat. Also practice for Southpaws is always good considering his fight after this one.

by Waldo Rastel on Dec 4, 2009 5:41 AM EST up reply actions

So Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito and Devon Alexander would all be “stay busy” fights? I mean one of them just sticks out like a sore thumb is all I’m saying, even if I personally believe that Alexander might actually give him more of a fight than the other two. One of them is flat-out admitting, “Yeah, this is just to keep in shape,” while the other two are former “champions” and have been main event fighters on HBO and Showtime on several occasions.

Yeah but thats just cause I want to see Alexander v. Floyd…..even though thats probably not going to happen now…

by Waldo Rastel on Dec 4, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

if ur gunna say alexander...

why not timothey bradley? (the one that took Witters title off him)

by Sweet science on Dec 7, 2009 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Timing more than anything. When it looked like Pac was going to delay the fight floyd would probably still want to fight near end of March or early May. Bradley is fighting Dec 12. and would likely not want to come back so soon, especially versus such high level competition.
