Ivan Calderon set to fight Cesar Canchila in May

Ivancalderonjeyyy_medium Junior flyweight world champion and pound-for-pound contender Ivan Calderon (32-0, 6 KO) will likely be returning to the ring on May 23 to take on fellow 108-pound titlist Cesar Canchila (27-1, 21 KO) in a unification bout in Puerto Rico.

This officially puts Canchila-Segura II off the table, which Top Rank had hoped to incorporate on their Tijuana Thunder pay-per-view in late March. The rumor had been that Canchila wanted a different fight, and he'll get a much better payday to take on Calderon than rematch Segura.

The fight is a good test for the 34-year old Calderon, who has been tested in recent fights, notably against Hugo Cazares on two occasions. As great a pure boxer as he is, he is going to have a harder time as he ages. I think a first career loss is probably imminent so long as he faces the top fighters, and Canchila is a rugged guy who can punch.

Gotta disagree

Canchila is rugged, is durable, can punch and is exciting. But I think he is going to get easily outboxed by Calderon in this spot. I actually was looking forward to betting a good price on Segura in the rematch. Calderon likely will lose along the line but I think he will easily outpoint this guy.

Canchila and Segura had one hell of fight on the undercard of the Cotto/Margarito fight. I was impressed with their work rate and sheer slugging.

I just like how Calderon take on the top guys

Now if every fighter would do that it would make for a lot more exciting fights.

Yeah — I think it’s easy to give Calderon crap because there are so few “top guys” in his weight range, but he does try his darndest.

Easy to say now

after not facing the top guys for the first 5 years he was a championship-level fighter.

Vogt early, Vogt often.
