Duddy
Will he finally fight Ronald Hearns after this or is it off indefinitely?
by Fooch on Feb 21, 2009 12:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
probably off for the time being
Duddy’s had all kinds of promotional issues and it looks like Arum and Top Rank are trying to work out a long-term deal with him, or at least a few fights, one of which is rumored to be a title shot at Pavlik later this year if he looks even decent against Vanda. Pavlik will kill Duddy, but it’ll do a nice house at MSG or in Atlantic City.

yeah there are four fights tonight
the three with the big features and the fourth is the Korobov vs Jones fight mentioned at the bottom. Sucks that my gf is coming to town tonight, I haven’t seen her in 2 months and she wants to go out. I was looking forward to seeing how Cotto and Pavlik did tonight. I will be reading the comments on here tomorrow to get a sense of how the fights went.

I don’t want to dwell on it, but did cotto get any reconstructive or plastic surgery? His face looks a little different from before the fight, which is understandable, but almost looks like he lived 2 extra years, and not 7-8 months. Just a thought.

Korobov-Jones R1
This should be short. Jones got his face smashed in a couple weeks ago on FNF by Shawn Porter.
Cory Jones is described as “not too shabby.” I would say he’s quite shabby. First 30 seconds contain little besides Jones trying to stay away. They call Shawn Porter “John Porter.”
Really nothing going on at all for the first half of the round. Left from Korobov. He’s been sticking it in here and there. Cory Jones has a hell of a story.
Dead round. Korobov isn’t out to kill this guy right away. Lotta probing. Left from Korobov. Crowd is booing. Horrible fucking round.

Korobov-Jones R2
Stiff left from Korobov and Jones starts leaning on him. Wow this isn’t much of a fight at all. Korobov should steamroll this dude. Shawn Porter did. Come on, Matt. Or Cory. I don’t care. Someone make a fight.
Korobov is doing a bit more this round, but still not enough. Jones with a right. MSG crowd isn’t exactly taking to this fight. Korobov is easily controlling the fight but it’s just nothing at all so far. I mean you can clearly see who the better boxer is, but Jones is hanging around and not getting hurt at all. Korobov with a left, caught with a right in return.
Korobov 10-9

Korobov-Jones R3
Pretty sure Top Rank was hoping for a highlight reel KO for Korobov for a big crowd to see. Not getting it so far. Shit if Jones would pressure he might have a shot.
Jones trying now but Korobov is too good defensively to leave openings for this guy. I would leave this fight if it ended now thinking Korobov completely lacks any killer instinct. He should seriously beat the crap out of Jones. He’s just not. He’s boxing just fine, but this style is not going to make him marketable in the States without great charisma, which he does not have. The MSG crowd is REALLY getting on this now.
Anyway, Korobov, who keeps sticking in a couple shots here and there and is easily winning this fight, could change his name to John Jones and it’s not going to make him any more easy to sell as a star with this type of action.

Korobov-Jones R4
Korobov corner tells him not to worry about the KO or the crowd. Good advice in a bigger fight, but there’s no denying that at this rate he’s leaving this fight having sorely unimpressed many people given his hype and legitimate hype at that.
Korobov with a couple shots. He’s not going to end this thing with a minute left. He’s landed some nice lefts. Cory is crowding a lot — I think he’s just trying to survive these four grueling rounds. I guess that sounds sort of insulting; whatever, it’s a crap fight. I’m a consumer and a critic by nature. I know it takes balls to get in there for any fight against anyone, but bleh.
10 seconds left, MASSIVE COUNTER RIGHT HOOK BY KOROBOV AND THAT IS A HUGE KNOCKOUT

Duddy-Vanda R1
Duddy starting with a right and a left hook. Vanda throws a right to the stomach. Left hook to the body by Vanda. Duddy firing hard left hooks that wobble Vanda a bit. Vanda trying to set up a right, but Duddy’s keeping him at bay pretty well. Duddy working off the jab pretty well so far. Now they’re in tight and bulling each other. Vanda finding nothing. There’s a left hook to the body by Vanda.
Duddy with a nice combo that backs Vanda down. He’s deterring him very well thus far. Double left hook looks nice. He looks outstanding this round — I mean, it’s Matt Vanda, but Duddy does look very sharp, especially given the layoff.

Duddy-Vanda R2
If this keeps up my Vanda upset pick sure as hell ain’t happenin’.
Nice counter right from Duddy as Vanda comes out a little more aggressive. Sharp jab from Duddy stings Vanda. Left hook from Duddy blocked by the glove, but he’s getting it off with ease. Vanda’s gotta land something big to get Duddy out of what is a very effective rhythm so far. Bernstein suggests getting in and roughing him up some. I agree. Lure the brawl. Duddy’s trying to be better defensively but fighters are who they are usually and he can be goaded, I bet.
Vanda’s blocking a lot this round, but not landing much back. He’s having a horrible time offensively, which is bizarre against Duddy. Two jabs from Vanda as Duddy backpedals. Vanda’s starting to get the jab in better. Nice right from Vanda, BIG right from Duddy. Now they might start to mix it up heavy.
Here they go…
Vanda’s landing big counter rights and Duddy’s still controlling, but it’s less complete than before. Round ends on a back-and-forth. This could kick off big soon.
Duddy 10-9

Duddy-Vanda R3
Hard right to the body by Duddy. Left hook counter from Vanda lands clean. Vanda sweeps with a left hook. He really wants the toe-to-toe. Duddy, to his credit, keeps boxing more than ever before.
Right hand Duddy, Vanda smiles which means he felt it. Duddy has controlled this round beautifully with the jab. Vanda starts winging shots at the end of the round trying to steal it, but no, doesn’t happen.

Duddy-Vanda R4
Duddy shoots a hook to the body. He’s in firm control. Duddy’s faster, stronger, seems more sure of his gameplan, and has taken Vanda out of this fight. Vanda’s got to start pressing because he can’t win a boxing match against Duddy. I said it.
NICE right from Vanda, but Duddy rocks him back. Duddy walked right through that and it was a hard shot. Duddy back to the jab now. I’m really impressed with what Pat Burns has done with him, and John’s willingness to work this style. I bet he’s feeling great about this performance since his face isn’t yet covered in blood.
Duddy ducks a left hook, bell sounds, another round to Duddy.
Duddy 10-9
Duddy 40-36

Duddy-Vanda R5
Duddy comes out still totally content to work the jab and see what it opens up. He’s dominating.
Now Duddy swings big shots as Vanda gets a little off balance. Good time to do it. This Duddy might actually not get curbstomped by Pavlik.
Vanda retreats to the ropes and almost falls over. Right hand Vanda. Now he goes southpaw for a moment. Duddy with a three-punch combo, blocked, and then a jab lands after. Vanda with a right to the body. Duddy pumps the jab three times in return. Vanda with a left hook to the body. Duddy fires a combo, Vanda puts the ear muffs up.

Everything I had read about Duddy led me to believe he was essentially a poor man’s Katsidis. He looks really good, though.

Duddy-Vanda R6
CompuBox has Vanda landing at a higher percentage (39) than Duddy (38) but with far less thrown or landed. Duddy’s defense still isn’t great, but he’s not letting Vanda wing at will. That’s the difference.
Trading jabs at center ring now. Vanda has been able to accomplish so little. He’s off his game a little, but Duddy’s performance has a lot to do with that. He’s taking him apart.
Vanda misses a big overhand right and misses it badly. Vanda is trying to find a home for his right, and finally does land one, but this is another Duddy round.

Duddy-Vanda R7
My Vanda pick stunk. Damn you, improving John Duddy!
Vanda goes a bit low, referee doesn’t come in, Vanda acknowledges his low shot, they tap gloves and move on.
Vanda starting to throw some now, firing in combinations. There’s Duddy shooting a combo back. Vanda’s in this round with half of it left, which is something new for this fight. Right hand by Duddy. Vanda with a couple lefts as Duddy comes in the next time.
Vanda STINGS Duddy with a nice left hand after baiting him with shots to the body. Vanda really bringing some aggression this round. Nice right by Duddy. And another one. Closest round of the fight, but Duddy still won it.

Duddy-Vanda R8
Vanda’s corner: “Last couple rounds now, you gotta kick some ass.”
Vanda keeping up the aggression this round and it’s working a bit. Duddy is starting to retreat into the corner and this might start changing. Vanda with a hard hook to the body, and now Duddy is ready to war. And then he resets.
Nice jab by Duddy. Then they land jabs at the same time. Vanda really needs to just start throwing. What’s he got to lose? The fight is almost certainly in the bag on the cards for Duddy. If he loses, well, he was supposed to. If he wins, it’s a big step up for him and the best win of his career.
Vanda steps in and winds up eating a few shots. Early in the round it looked like this was going Vanda’s way, but Duddy winds up winning anyway.

Duddy-Vanda R9
While they talk about Duddy being better off at 154, they’re ignoring that there’s simply not much money down there. Middleweight is where he makes the most money theoretically, particularly if he can get a Pavlik fight. He’ll still lose, but like this I think maybe he doesn’t get his head knocked off at least.
Vanda isn’t out to wail this round, which is too bad. Duddy stings him with a pretty combo. Duddy continues to own the ring off his jab. Vanda is being swept out of the building.

Duddy-Vanda R10
Duddy works the jab, works the jab. Vanda stalking and throwing with bad intentions. Two body shots by Vanda. NOW VANDA OPENS UP! Lighting Duddy up! Duddy is in trouble! Left hook Vanda! Half a round left!
Duddy holding on now. Vanda stings him again! And again! AND AGAIN! Vanda is throwing with all he’s got left! Outstanding!
JESUS WHAT A LEFT HOOK! Duddy fires back! Vanda backed off with the jab. 30 seconds to go.
Duddy eats another left hook. Ten seconds and they are throwing! Then Vanda backs down and lays off totally inside of ten seconds? What…
Great final round. War Vanda in a losing effort.

Duddy: 254/703, 36%

Cotto-Jennings R1
I feel an overwhelming sense of pity or something like it. I can’t help it.
Cotto with a straight right that falls just short. Jennings staying at distance, trying to find a jab perhaps. He’s caught on the ropes. Cotto is just stalking him. Slow first half of the round. Might help Jennings.
Cotto snaps him back with a left. Vicious left to the body by Cotto. Jennings has done a good job staying away, I’ll give him that. He’s got OK movement. …I’m trying.
Cotto made a small charge with Jennings near the ropes, but Jennings got away. Jennings clearly wants nothing to do with Cotto, but he got through the first without taking any real damage.
Cotto 10-9

Cotto landed 12 in the first, Jennings just four.
Jennings tries a 1-2, but he’s too far away to find it. He appears to have no offensive confidence. Miguel gets him cornered, and Jennings just hugs up.
Jennings throws three shots, easily blocked by Cotto. Left hook by Cotto. Jennings with a right. Cotto backs him down with a jab. Cotto with a left now. Jennings doubles the jab, blocked. Jennings backs down on two jabs from Cotto. Cotto lands hard on the ropes near the bell.
Cotto 10-9

Cotto-Jennings R3
Cotto is being really patient. Jennings is being really…well. He’s staying the hell away from him. Bernstein tries to find nice things to say about his rhythm.
Jennings has not landed a single significant punch. He’s no bum but he’s way out of his depth here. Cotto also hasn’t done much but it’s because Jennings is fleeing at the first sign of any trouble. It’s smart, but I don’t have to like it.
Cotto slinging left hooks to the body now, but Jennings will make it out of this round, too. Hard jab to end the round for Cotto.

Cotto-Jennings R4
You can say this: Jennings isn’t laying down.
Cotto finds him with a left uppercut to the chest. Jab snaps Jennings’ head back. Jennings has landed some jabs. Right hand Cotto, and I think he’s targeted his prey a little. Jennings is getting stuck in situations where he has to fight. LEFT HOOK STAGGERS JENNINGS! COTTO TO THE BODY! DOWN GOES JENNINGS!
Up at eight, but he’s about done.
Cotto unloading on Jennings with left hooks! Upstairs and downstairs, DOWN AGAIN ON ANOTHER BODY SHOT!
He’s finished. He’ll fight on.
10 seconds left in the round.
Cotto DESTROYING JENNINGS IN THE CORNER! Jennings makes it out of the round!
Cotto 10-7

Cotto-Jennings R5
Cotto is like a shark now. Jennings working the jab — bless his heart, he’s got guts.
Cotton targeting the body again. Jennings knows it, too. Cotto working him over with a jab now. Body shot digs in. Jennings tries to hold on. Rights and lefts to the body after a straight left upstairs. Jennings is lost.
Cotto left hook upstairs, and he’s digging away now. Jennings gets away. Jab snaps his head back. Jennings in the corner, he’s DOWN AGAIN!
30 seconds left in the round. Esteves rightly waves it off.

Pavlik-Rubio R1
Rubio throws a straight right, misses. Huge “Kelly” chant. Pavlik moves him back with a right that misses. Pavlik walking him down to start. Pavlik with a left hook to the body. Rubio eats a few but they had nothing on them despite Mancini’s observance. Pavlik was punching off balance.
Pavlik fires a huge right that doesn’t land square, but a left hook to the body gets there. Right to the body by Pavlik. He’s totally controlling distance and landing long shots. Hook and a right, not clean. Rubio has offered nothing offensively so far.
Pavlik swings a big right, glances to the ribs. Left hook by Pavlik. Rubio has felt him out all round. Nice right from Palvik and another! He tagged him there! Rubio backs down, on the ropes, Pavlik attacks! And again! Bell sounds. Great first round for Pavlik.
Pavlik 10-9
That could even be 10-8 perhaps.

Pavlik-Rubio R2
Rubio landed 2/16 in the first round.
Pavlik hurting Rubio again about 40 seconds in, backing him to the ropes. Rubio is doing NOTHING. Come on, Marco. Make a go of it at least.
Pavlik with a heavy right to the body. Rubio is seriously in there doing absolutely nothing at all. This is kind of embarrassing. He’s just going backwards and trying to cover. He’s not even throwing a “for show” jab.
Jab lands. Combo lands and drives Rubio back again. I really expected Rubio to bang with him but he’s just not. Finally Rubio throws a couple. Now he goes back to the cover-and-pray.
I know Rubio starts slow, but it’s like he doesn’t even want to be here.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 20-18

That's what the graphic said.
I think it was:
Rubio: 3 of 15, 20%
Pavlik: 15 of 78, 19%

Pavlik-Rubio R3
Rubio actually throwing now this round, with a left-right combo. The Pavlik Special on Pavlik. Pavlik comes back with a hook to the body, then his 1-2. Behind the head shot by Pavlik. Accidental.
Pavlik with a right to the body. Back to the jab. Straight right by Pavlik, then to the body. Rubio fighting back now at least. Pavlik rips him to the body with a left hook. Rubio is just not there. Even throwing a little he’s not throwing nearly enough. He’s got to find a way to deter Pavlik.
Rubio’s best round. Not saying much.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 30-27

Pavlik-Rubio R4
Rubio throws a right over Pavik’s left but it doesn’t find its mark. A little too long. Pavlik has him cornered, this could be trouble. Rubio does find his way out. Straight right from Pavlik. He’s just right in front of Pavlik for whatever Kelly wants to do.
This is an utter mismatch and it’s not like Rubio is some horrible fighter. He’s not world class, but he’s better than this. It gets us reacquainted with the fact that Pavlik is a devastating middleweight, too.
Pavlik unloading with three shots with Rubio on the ropes, Rubio tries to back him down on a jab. It fails. Pavlik misses a murderous right. Pavlik is so much bigger than Rubio in terms of frame. Nick points it out, too, and it’s so obvious. Rubio is not a middleweight like Pavlik is.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 40-36

Pavlik-Rubio R5
The only round I’ve had an underdog winning tonight was Vanda in the 10th. Think about that. 45 bucks.
Pavlik goes back to stinging Rubio on the ropes. Rubio is just offering zero resistance. Pavlik is sparring. Rubio wanders back to the ropes again. Uppercut and a straight right sends Rubio back. Rubio’s hurt and stuck near the corner. Straight right, and Pavlik throws three more shots.
This is not competitive to say the least.
This is one of those fights that I wonder what the point is already. Rubio is not here to win so far. Unless they have some magical plan to fire up after six rounds given away, this is all but over already.
Rubio does sting Pavlik with a left. Now Pavlik counters him with a nasty right and Rubio is really hurt. 10 seconds, and Rubio fires back a little.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 50-45

Pavlik-Rubio R6
Pavlik hurts him again, and has him on the ropes. He’s sitting on his punches and just banging away. Now he goes back to the jabs. Rubio is moving laterally a little more this round, but now he’s on the ropes again. Rubio is throwing and landing now. There’s a nice right by Rubio. But then Rubio just goes back to waiting.
Pavlik unloading at center ring with Rubio standing still. It’s target practice. I say that and Rubio lands another big right. Hmmm.
Easily Rubio’s best round. Again not saying a ton, but he’s showing some life at least. His chin has proven out tonight, you can say that. Rubio throwing in combination at the end of the round. Hey, whaddaya know? Easily the closest round.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 60-54

Pavlik-Rubio R7
Ray and Nick gave Rubio the last round.
Rubio back in the middle of the ring again. He’s got to pick up the tempo something big. Pavlik covered up when Rubio threw last round. Pavlik stinging him again, Rubio caught in the headlights again.
Pavlik throwing at will. Rubio standing and waiting. I think he wants to counter. He’s had plenty of chances while getting smoked in there. Pavlik with a nice left. Rubio going straight back over and over and over again, getting caught over and over and over again.
Ten seconds and now again Rubio wants to fight late in the round.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 70-63

Pavlik-Rubio R8
Pavlik with a right early in the round. Ray Mancini is making Pavlik out to be the hardest-punching man in the history of the world. Rubio has not been close to going down, honestly. Pavlik isn’t landing big flush shots too much.
Pavlik with a left. Overhand right just glances. Pavlik to the body, then slaps upstairs. HUGE RIGHT HAND ROCKS RUBIO! Rubio wobbling on the ropes, now here he comes back! And back to the ropes. Another big right! Rubio trying all he can.
Rubio is not clinching as Mancini points out. Right hand nails him again! Uppercut comes in! Rubio might survive the round! He fires back off the ropes! And he does survive.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 80-72

Pavlik-Rubio R9
Pavlik battering Rubio. Mancini is in love with Pavlik. “He’s got him out on his feet!” He’s really not. He’s throwing back here and there. He’s outclassed but he’s not dying in there.
Rubio stuck in the corner again. He’s wilting slowly but surely. Left glances off Pavlik, nothing on it. Back to the ropes, Rubio being pounded. Rubio stumbles back into the ropes off a jab. At this point you have to think about stopping this. It’s not overwhelmingly nasty but it’s over. Rubio is not going to knock Pavlik out and that’s the only chance he has at all. He has not hurt Pavlik once and only briefly even had him playing defense.
Hard jab backs Rubio down again. Bell sounds with Rubio on the ropes for the 50th time.
Pavlik 10-9
Pavlik 90-81
