Troy Ross wins "The Contender"
Troy "The Boss" Ross won the latest season of "The Contender," beating Ehinomen Ehikamenor in the championship fight by fourth round TKO.
Ross (22-1, 15 KO) hails from Toronto by way of Guyana and is already 33 years old, so I don't think we're seeing an emerging cruiserweight star by any means, but he did pretty well smoke the tournament from what I watched. After the first two episodes, I admittedly watched very little. The show simply is not for me.
Past "Contender" winners have been former junior middleweight titlist Sergio Mora, Grady Brewer and Sakio Bika, a former Joe Calzaghe challenger who has made his mark as one of the best at 168 now. The biggest post-show star has probably been season one's Alfonso Gomez, who retired Arturo Gatti and was then lambasted by Miguel Cotto.
Rico Hoye won an eight-round decision over Akinyemi Laleye to win third place in the competition.
Before beating Ehikamenor, Ross defeated Lawrence Tauasa, Felix Cora Jr. and Laleye. Congratulations to Mr. Ross on his tournament win.

watched the final
entertaining action event. Kind of weird ending. One guy gets hurt but not devastated and turns away, not giving Smoger much of a choice.
Tony Danza may be the single biggest d-bag on the planet. I don’t even want to go into it, but he just sucks the life completely out of me.

One thing about Ross
Is that at each stage, he basically chose the toughest opponent out there to fight, so I have to respect him for that. While he might not be a star, he certainly throws himself in the mix in a cruiserweight division that has a lot of depth but not a lot of top level talent. His stamina questions are unanswered up to this point, but as a relatively versatile southpaw, he could give some guys trouble, especially since there aren’t many guys right now who are quick enough to take advantage of the huge hole in his defense when he lunges from outside.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

Ross also is a former two-time Olympian with a deep amateur pedigree. It looks to me like he is the sort of guy that sort of got stuck in boxing’s nether-world for awhile and never could break through, even though he kept winning fights. I’d be very intrigued to see where a southpaw with power and good boxing skills could go now that he’s an instant draw.
