3 hours . . .
Anyone hear that John Ruiz was named #1 mandatory for the Valuev-Chagaev winner?
They also announced that the loser of Valuev-Chagaev immediately becomes mandatory for the winner of the winner’s bout with Ruiz . . . and so on and so forth .
If three guys battle 10 times in round robin format for a “heavyweight title” and no one sees it and no one cares, does it really happen?
“If three guys battle 10 times in round robin format for a "heavyweight title" and no one sees it and no one cares, does it really happen?”
I’m going with “no” on that one.
I've never really seen Nicky "fight" at all

Damn
I wasn’t sure I would be, but it turns out I am really pumped for this fight. I like both of these dudes, and I have a feeling this will end up being some sort of classic. A far as “p4p” goes I think you could almost make as solid an argument for JMM as you could for Pacquaio. And I think the Baby Bull went from being completey overrated to completely underrated about as fast as any fighter I’ve ever seen. I have JMM in a fairly wide decision, but I’m praying for war!

So Steward is going to be here tonight but he couldn’t make it to NJ for Banks’ chance to become a world champion last night? Seems a little weak.
he's not Banks' trainer
I don’t blame him. He’s gotta earn that chedduh.

John-Juarez R2
John sticking the jab, Juarez keeping his hands high and tight. John sticking and moving, Juarez looking for an opening and feeling Chris out. Rocky tries to go to the body a little. There he lands a right to the ribs, but John ties him up. Manny’s right that Rocky doesn’t look like he’s starting so slow this time around. John working behind the jab the whole round, and now Rocky’s loading up a few little shots and getting John to cover up. Rocky with a right. Juarez is getting inside nicely and not letting John use his distance so much. Still, the accuracy of John’s jab wins the round. But Rocky doesn’t yet look outclassed. Yet.

John-Juarez R2 (for real!)
Rocky shoots some punches to the body and misses a left hook upstairs. He is definitely starting better than his usual. I now worry he’ll wear himself out instead of picking up later. Rocky shooting some hard left hooks, one upstairs and one to the body. Rocky backs John down. He’s really doing well to get inside. I have to say I like what Rocky’s doing so far. He’s doing what he has to.
Rocky warned for going a little low and the crowd jeers. Don’t worry, Larry Boy will probably give you something to love soon enough. Juarez is really getting in there well. He’s being slightly outlanded by John but not enough to make a real difference I don’t think. There’s a right from John. Close, close round.
Juarez 10-9
19-19
"If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove. That's all I am. I live it." -- Marvin Hagler
Juarez round
19-19. So far the fight is playing perfectly into Juarez’s gameplan. John needs to create a bit more separation, or do more on the inside.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Early call, but it sounds like Max will have his nose up Rocky’s ass all night, sort of like Farhood with Banks for most of the fight last night.
which is weird

John-Juarez R3
John with some combination punching, mostly blocked and so is that uppercut. This is quite tactical but not the stinker it really could have been. Juarez trying to go back to the body. John gets away from him. John fires a big right, mostly blocked. Both guys are doing well defensively with their gloves. John is throwing wild and really maybe getting a bit off track. He’s winning the round with a minute to go, though.
Nice uppercut sneaks through for John. He’s really outworking Juarez badly this round. For me this is the clearest round of the three. Rocky’s been cut off and John has been both more aggressive and more effective. There’s a great uppercut near the end of the round, but Juarez fires back on him and lands the final punch, a left hook to the chest.

29-28. They need to get off Juarez’s knob. John is blocking 90% of the hard shots Juarez is throwing.

John-Juarez R4
Harold: “[John] is a cutie if I ever sawr a cutie.” He means that in the nicest way, of course. Actually Harold is the guy in love with Chris. He needs one with this crew.
Juarez accidentally punches to the back of the head, Cole says nothing. John is shooting overhand rights for some reason. Maybe he just thinks Rocky is too slow. Rocky with a lazy 1-2; there was no starch on that. John is really headhunting big time now.
Nice right by Rocky, and there’s a left hook after. John resets and doesn’t go into a firefight. He can’t punch with Juarez; that I’m sure of. Rocky’s got heavy hands at 126. Rocky working hard to win the round late, and he just might be doing it. John lands a right, then backs off on a jab trade. Looks for the right twice more.
Juarez 10-9
38-38
But this feels like it’s going to go John’s way; I think he lost this round on a couple mistakes, nothing more.
"If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove. That's all I am. I live it." -- Marvin Hagler
Big round for John
39-37. Pretty dominant round. The one time Juarez landed a couple big punches, John came right back and landed 3 bigger ones.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I saw that round for John, too.

4-1 John by my count.

John-Juarez R5
Brick and Matt — wise men both — totally disagree with my Juarez round four. I thought Rocky landed better shots and they were fairly even in landed.
Nice right by Juarez, now John warned for holding the back of the head. Nice right down the pipe by John. Rocky’s cut, and John’s taking momentum. This is what I expected; I thought Rocky would hang in and then the cream would rise. I think the cream’s about to rise. Not a good cut, either. Above the left eye.
And John’s targeting it. Juarez gets him with a right, John throws a left after they hold. Rocky shoots the left hook, misses, and John uppercuts him. Good round for John.
John 10-9
John 48-47
This is a much better fight than most of us thought it would be. It ran the risk of sucking; it’s been pretty good.

Every time Juarez looks like he might be taking momentum, John comes right back and takes it back. 49-46 John.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

John-Juarez R6
Rocky’s gonna have to turn it up and start landing something big. Rocky with a small left hook as they wrestle each other on the ropes. John’s just starting to outbox and outclass Rocky. I love Juarez, great guy, but he’s just not in John’s league as a boxer. John with a big flurry, Rocky blocks some of it, but not enough of it. Juarez slips.
John working that right, moving all over, and just making Juarez look slow and tired. He’s probably NOT tired; he is slow in comparison, and very much so.
John 10-9
John 58-56
"If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove. That's all I am. I live it." -- Marvin Hagler
Round 6 was almost a brawl there
Close round, I’m actually giving it to Juarez. He seemed to control 2/3 of the round and landed a lot of good shots to the body in close. 58-56 John.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Ronnie Shields is way better here than he was with Cintron. He’s telling Juarez that they CANNOT fight at distance.

John-Juarez R7
Right upstairs and a left hook to the body by Juarez. Rocky is trying hard to come back, but here comes John cutting off his momentum. John peppering him with about six shots. This is getting to be what it is on paper: wait, I’ll come back to that.
WHAT THE FUCK was Laurence Cole doing there grabbing at Rocky’s head? Who the hell does this guy think he is in there? News flash, Larry: No one paid to see YOU.
Now he slaps John on the back. This guy is absurd. Slaps him again.
John is dominating another round. Big uppercut glances Rocky. Juarez is trying with all he’s got and he’s not fighting a bad fight. He’s doing about as well as he can. But John is now kicking his ass. This is getting very wide. It is what it was on paper: World Class v. B-grade fighter. Juarez is good. He’s not good enough for this guy.
John 10-9
John 68-65
"If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove. That's all I am. I live it." -- Marvin Hagler
Big round for John again
First minute was a bit more brawling, as soon as he picked up a bit of separation, he really started to locate his uppercut. He also landed a few nice short punches that seemed to do some real damage. John 68-65
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I really wish this guy would have come to the US earlier.
He’s a tremendously skilled boxer, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
"Karma - there it was. The meaning of life, straight from Carson Daly's lips to my morphine-laced ears." -Earl Hickey
he's rarely this fun to watch
Usually more tactical than this. He’s not BORING, but he’s rarely exciting. He’s just very good.

"Karma - there it was. The meaning of life, straight from Carson Daly's lips to my morphine-laced ears." -Earl Hickey
John-Juarez R8
Rocky lands a left hook, and it makes no difference. John fires four or five shots right back, and keeps working. Juarez tries to bull John; just does not work. Juarez lands the occasional left hook or decent right, and John is outlanding him about 2-to-1 at this point. Juarez is throwing with all he’s got late in the round, and the crowd is into it, and Max is trying to hype it up, but if you actually watch, John is also landing and landing and landing right back.

Another John round
But I could see that one going either way. John completely dominated for two minutes, then Juarez took over at the end, although John still landed some strong shots during what seemed to be a desperation flurry. John 78-74.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
John-Juarez R9
Houston tries to will Juarez into the lead. Who knows with the judges?
Rocky is definitely not going down without a fight. He’s trying to come in. John is just beating him up. Juarez with a nice right. Damn it all, he’s trying to make this a rugged dogfight. That’s a fighter. This guy’s a fighter. He has to know he can’t outbox John, and he’s stopped trying at all.
Juarez with another nice right hand. John is still landing, but the ol’ clean effective punching is now going to Juarez. He could’ve even won the last round, so this might be closer than we’re seeing it.

Rocky throws a couple nice left hooks, John fires back with a right. This has become a good power punching battle the last few rounds. John with another nice right, uppercut misses. This has really been a hell of a good fight. I’ve quite enjoyed this, and it’s setting the stage wonderfully.

Rocky with a right, then a left hook blocked that pushes John back. John moving around the ring, jabbing, looking to set up the straight right. John with a couple sneaky uppercuts inside to back Juarez down. It doesn’t appear as though John has gotten tired in any way — and he had a virus this week.
Juarez with a couple hooks, and now getting busy to the body. Left hook to the body stings John just as Manny says he can’t wear out John to the body anymore. Juarez with another left hook to the body. Right upstairs! Juarez rallying, and I’ll tell you he’s got big momentum right now. This is tense. BIG RIGHT! John may be hurt, he’s covering up and backing down! ROCKY NAILS HIM AGAIN, BELL SOUNDS!
Oh man. GREAT stuff by Juarez.

John-Juarez R12
Rocky coming out fast and hard, and John trying to hold on, clutching him inside. John throwing back, now throwing first. This is drama, baby! This is boxing.
Rocky looking for big shots, John moving around the ring and making him work to find him. Rocky with a left hook, John comes back with a flurry. Rocky backing him down. BIG RIGHT! John holding on, hurt by a left! ROCKY FIRING AWAY! 1:30 to go!
BIG RIGHT Juarez! John comes back with three shots! WHAT A FIGHT!
Juarez stings him with a jab. Corners him, John gets out. John looking exhausted now. John with a 1-2, blocked. Juarez throwing. 45 seconds to go.
John holding on for dear life maybe. But he’s still making the fight go with lead shots, not waiting on Rocky. 20 seconds.
John holding on again. 10 seconds.
Juarez needs a big one. They’re throwing, and the bell sounds.
Wonderful fight. Hats off to both men. Great drama, great energy, and both guys had their best game.

No
It was a 6-6 fight. You really think this was a robbery???

6-6 was one reasonable score
On a range of reasonable scores between 8-4 John and 6-6. That all three scored it 6-6 was a bit odd.

Marquez-Diaz R1
Diaz with a left hook and he’s pressuring immediately. Nice left. Left hook lands. He’s starting very fast. Marquez seems like he’s testing what Diaz has. Left hook Diaz! Big body shots, and Diaz fires a right. Diaz is FIRING. We’re going to have a fight.
Marquez rips to the body. Diaz with a jab, and another. Marquez doubles the jab. Three-punch combo by Marquez, mostly picked off. Marquez in the corner, and Diaz unloads. Now he’s out. Diaz eats a stiff jab. Marquez cut off trying a left hook.
Right from Diaz, Marquez comes ripping back. Diaz boxes the ears, then eats stiff right. HERE THEY GO! HERE THEY GO! Huge left hook by Diaz! HERE THEY GO! NO MORE TO SAY. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUCKING AWESOME!
Diaz 10-9

Oh wow. This is going to be some kind of terrific.
On the undercard
Daniel Jacobs won by 1st round KO. Now 14-0 (13 Ko’s) at middleweight/super middleweight
Marquez-Diaz R2
Diaz backs him to the ropes again. Marquez seems reasonably comfortable countering with his back on the ropes. Diaz throwing again, body then upstairs. Marquez backs down, and now he’s stuck. Here they go again! FUCK YEAH! FUCK YEAH! This is what we came to see. Diaz is catching him, but Marquez is throwing hard purposeful shots back in counter. Diaz is going right down the middle. BIG LEFT HOOK ON MARQUEZ! Marquez might be hurt and he’s stuck on the ropes!
HARD right to the body by Marquez! Left hook to the body by Marquez. This is some kind of fight.
Two body shots by Diaz. Now he peppers upstairs. Stiff left hook by Diaz, Marquez nails him back with a right. Marquez with a flurry, ripping the body and going upstairs.
Man oh man.
Diaz 10-9
Diaz 20-18

Marquez-Diaz R3
Marquez with a good right, then Diaz starts warring back with fast shots to the body. Big left to the body. He’s fighting with his bread and butter. He’s here to win and win big. I’m loving it.
Marquez with a flurry, Diaz with a left hook. Diaz raking Marquez on the ropes with four shots. Marquez fires back. He’s not out of this, but he’s going to have to get a big rhythm. Diaz firing, Marquez may have stung him on a counter shot. HUGE right from Marquez, Diaz never saw it coming.
Right upstairs, right to the body by Marquez. Another great round.
Marquez 10-9 on the strength of some nasty shots

Marquez-Diaz R4
Diaz with a WICKED left hook. He’s landing that so well so far. Marquez hit, and throwing like an angry crackhead again. I love you, Marquez. I love you again, Diaz. How foolish of me to doubt you.
Marquez throwing off the ropes, and now he’s stuck in the corner. And there he goes. They’re ignoring how hard he’s hitting Diaz to the body and occasionally upstairs to be in love with Diaz. JMM is right in this fight. He’s sneaky like that.
Nice right from Diaz, but HERE COMES MARQUEZ! Diaz firing back yet again with a flurry of his own. Now Marquez with three punches. These guys are at war. This would have to be the worst fight ever from this point on to miss FotY considerations already.
Just warring to the bell again. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Marquez-Diaz R5
Nice combo from Marquez catches Diaz flat-footed. And there’s a super combo from Diaz with Marquez trapped again. And Marquez right back with a 3-punch combination. And Diaz right back with four. Left hook Diaz. My God.
Marquez drilling away to the body, Diaz firing, MARQUEZ NAILS HIM, DIAZ NAILS HIM RIGHT BACK! This is brutal. This is two world-class fighters firing on all cylinders. This is moving toward a class of Barrera-Morales or Vazquez-Marquez or Juan’s fights with Pacquiao. Just everything coming together in a perfect storm.
They’re firing away again! Marquez backed down! Boy, Juan Diaz came to become a superstar. He’s rocking it. This might be the best he’s ever fought. Marquez is cut.

Marquez-Diaz R6
Diaz going back to work on the ropes, and Marquez backs him down this time. Marquez getting bulled around. Diaz going back to the body. Diaz with a stiff jab. This has slowed down some this round, which is relative to the fact that the first five were pretty unreal in pace.
Great shots from Marquez now. He’s right there with Diaz; this is closer than my score. They both throw rights to the body at the exact same time. How often do you see that? THREE uppercuts from Marquez, speaking of things you never see. AND NOW THEY GO TO WAR AGAIN! Woof. Marquez starting to land good, clean, hard shots more frequently. Juan is getting a small lesson this round. Another fiery ending to the round.
Marquez 10-9
Diaz 58-56

down, not out.

Marquez-Diaz R7
Marquez wins a firefight in the corner. He’s either baiting Diaz or fighting less than brilliantly, or he just can’t help it because Diaz is that much stronger than him and he respects it. All are quite possible.
Lamps relays the stat: Diaz has already thrown more power punches against JMM than anyone ever has in a 12-round fight. And we’re through six.
Marquez with a great combo at center ring, and he’s landing again right after. Now to the ropes, Diaz fires a left hook. Diaz with another one and some body shots while on the ropes. Marquez moves it back to the middle. Lampley notes that Marquez’s mouth is open. He might be wearing out.
Marquez with a great combo again. What a fight this is. What a card this has been. HARD straight right from Marquez, Diaz drives him back with a left hook! Diaz throwing, Marquez trying to counter! Bell rings.
Marquez 10-9
Diaz 67-66

Marquez-Diaz R8
Diaz cut early in the round on a left uppercut. VICIOUS right from Marquez! Marquez going to WORK on Diaz in the first minute of this round. He’s beating on him. Now Diaz comes back with a lot of energy, tons of punches! Marquez turns him around on the ropes! Back to center ring. My goodness.
Marquez with a right uppercut now. The Marquez fans are starting to get loud, too. Great energy in the fight and thus in the crowd. And Marquez ripping away! That’s a pretty bloody cut on Diaz’s right eye. He uh…boy he does not look like he’s responding well to this cut, either.
Marquez staggers him! Marquez unloading at mid-ring! Diaz with a left! That was perfect timing to back JMM down. JMM is amping it up and taking over. Bell sounds.
His cut man better be someone new. That cut is bad and his expression is totally different.

Marquez is firing off again to start this round. Diaz’s activity has dropped some. They’re bulling at mid-ring, Diaz trying to exert his will. Left hook Diaz! And he fires, JMM ducks and mixes him up. Diaz working him on the ropes now, and Marquez gets out and isn’t taking the sort of punishment that he was earlier in the same situations.
Uppercut Marquez. Vicious combo Marquez DIAZ IS DOWN ON AN UPPERCUT! Diaz is up and will fight on.
35 seconds to go in the round.

Whats the general consensus on who will win, and will Marquez get the winner?
Pacquiao's the favorite
But Hatton has a great, great chance. Pacquiao is twice the fighter Hatton is in pure skill, but Ricky’s a really strong, physical 140-pounder.

Fast start by the underdog, quick and strong, looking good. Round 6 hits, and the favorite’s experience and counter-punching take over as the underdog loses steam.

Of course, I’ m not a genious like Bob Arum or Gary Shaw.

Kudos to GBP and HBO for such a great fight card…. really treated the fans to an excellent show. The fighters all contributed… John,Juarez,Diaz, and Marquez. This is what boxing is suppose to be.
jmm is my p4p #1 anyone else?
i know the pac fight was close but i think he won it so i think i can make the decision and until the outcome of hatton/pacman no doubt in my mind that jmm is the #1 p4p fighter in the world as of 2nite.
2 hasty? opinions?
I keep Pac #1
But the gap is way closer than most casual fans realize. They hear “#1 pound for pound fighter Manny Pacquiao” all the time. They hear little still about Marquez.
