MMA star Andrei Arlovski on the Williams-Wright undercard
FanPost frontpaged by SC.
Interesting tidbit from Dan Rafael's weekly chat:
"David (CA): arlovski is on the under card of williams vs wright, right?Dan Rafael: (12:15 PM ET ) Yes."
Just in case no one knows, he is one of the world's best MMA fighters who just recently headlined the Affliction's Day of Reckoning. No word on who he will face.
Most likely it will be a tomato can but his boxing coach is Freddie Roach, and Roach says that he is skilled enough to make an impact in the heavyweight division. He is considred one of the best strikers in MMA. It will be interesting to see if HBO mentions it before or after the telecast given Golden Boy's relationship with Affliction.
FanPosts do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Bad Left Hook or SB Nation. They might, though.

They'll need to move him quickly
If he wants to have a chance of getting money fights, but I suspect that after 4 or 5 fights he’ll go back to MMA. I don’t watch MMA at all, but what little I’ve seen of him tells me his chin is probably too wobbly to compete at an elite level unless he can develop amazing skills very quickly.

I hope Arlovski does well, because it would be good for boxing, but I seriously doubt it. Aside from a few marginal Thai fighters, there isn’t much of a precedent for this kind of thing. Plus, as Brick suggests, Fedor would seem to have exposed his chin.

I dunno
It’s not like he’s going to be throwing flying knees that go awry and get him conked in the jaw in boxing.
"I was trying to rob him. And he took my gun from me. And the gun was full of blanks. And he shot a blank into my eye. And now I cannot see from this eye ever again, the doctors say."
"Well to be honest it sounds like it's all your fault."

No, it will be the flying left hooks that get him conked against a legitimate HW.

probably
But he still won’t be in mid-air. The whole thing is tough to judge, even though the assumption is that Arlovski is simply getting into the game too late, and that assumption is probably right.

There is a significant difference between the puny 4 ounce gloves and `10 ounce gloves hitting you. We just don’t know how well he will react to punches until we see him in the ring with someone skilled enough to land some flush shots on him.
With that said if he faces guys who are respectable fighters I would expect this to happen to him.

Yeah, he’s got a bad chin. I think it won’t affect him in Boxing.
I think the difference between his losses to Fedor and Silvia and what he’ll expect in boxing is that most striking in MMA is very erratic. Sure there are accurate, fluent strikers, but most MMA striking is just out of control swinging until something hits. Yeah, Timmeh knocked him stupid, but he wasn’t dedicated, he was just punching.
Same with Fedor. It was phenominal that he nailed that overhand right hit the mark, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Fedor wasn’t fustrated if it missed. He wouldn’t care where it would land.

"I think it won’t affect him in Boxing."
Why not? Sure, the gloves are bigger, but the fights are way longer and it’s all punches, plus, like you pointed out, most boxers actually know how to punch accurately.

Saensak Muangsurin
Won his belt in his third pro fight after converting from Muai Thai and made like 10 defenses, including a win over borderline HOFer Guts Ishimatsu. But moving from Muay Thai is a different story from MMA I feel. The body movement when you don’t have to worry about a takedown is just very different.

Ishimatsu was 31-12-6 when he fought Muangsurin, who fought once more and retired. In short, he was a shot fighter.
I would say Muangsurin qualifies as “marginal.” Still, he did make a nice punching bag for a mid-career Tommy Hearns.
I do agree with you about the difference in fight skills necessitated by MMA and Muai Thai.

Ishimatsu was one of those guys
whose record looked a lot worse than he actually was. Closest comp today would be Glen Johnson I guess. Anyway, yeah, he was on his way out.
