Bute destroys Zuniga in Montreal
IBF super middleweight titlist Lucian Bute stopped Fulgencio Zuniga in the fourth round tonight in Montreal in front of yet another sellout crowd at the Bell Centre.
Bute (24-0, 19 KO) dominated the first three rounds against Zuniga, who appeared to have no rhythm whatsoever and didn't land one good punch. Bute decked Zuniga with a wicked shot to the solar plexus in the fourth, and stormed on him until the referee stepped in to stop the fight.
Bute will now await the winner of the April 4 fight between Librado Andrade and Vitali Tsypko. Most will be rooting for Andrade to win so that he can get a shot at revenge against Bute, though to be honest I think it takes a minor miracle for Librado to beat Bute, who keeps getting better. He was downright slick against Zuniga tonight.
We'll be back with round-by-round coverage again tomorrow afternoon at 4pm ET, when we'll do all three fights on the Khan-Barrera PPV card. Join us then!

That was a weird fight
Bute dominated but I didn’t buy the KO. I think Zuniga was trying to buy a low blow call, threw in a face and hit the deck.
Even though his beltline was high, a punch well below the sternum directly in the center isn’t a punch that generally causes that type of reaction or damage.
I think Zuniga decided he was going to lose on a wide UD, played for the low blow, then pretty much let the fight get stopped when it wasn’t ruled a low blow. The result is the same, Bute won as he should have, but I think the fight was strange.

Bute was pushing him back on jabs. Watching him hit the deck on a hard body shot didn’t surprise me at all.

always fun to watch fights in canada. the people are just ape shit over their fighters.
as for the fight, bute looked pretty good. nice mike mccallum like body shot there at the end. he’s not a world beater or anything but a damn good fighter. i don’t think andrade has a chance against him either in a rematch.

Frankly
Unless Tsypko has a worse chin than I think he does, I’d be surprised if Andrade beats Tsypko. Andrade is what he is, and that’s a fighter who’s straight murder on certain types of good fighters but who should get outboxed like hell by guys who are disciplined, can box moving backwards, and have a good chin.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

Really? I wasn’t too impressed when I last saw Tsypko which was vs the god aweful Lacy.

I think Brick’s contention is more with Andrade’s lack of boxing skill than Tsypko being a top-flight guy. Tsypko is technically sound, doesn’t put himself in stupid positions, and has decent movement. Andrade is a straight-ahead brawler, one of the best in the sport, but if he doesn’t wear the other guy out with big shots and pressure, can he really beat anyone worth a crap? He really has absolutely no skill whatsoever. That said he’s one of my favorite fighters currently.

I just read that Andre ward wants the winner of this fight, or the taylor vs. froch fight. I hope he gets a shot, he’s my favorite fighter. WBC and WBO #2 contender, I know it doesn’t mean a lot sometimes with those ratings, but I do want to see Ward get a shot. I think he’s gonna be a title holder by the end of the year. Andre Ward 2009!

I think Ward has trigger issues and just doesn’t let his hands go enough. I think he is talented but who has he beaten? Bute and Taylor are massive jumps in class.

I don’t think it’s a trigger issue. He’s careful and has good defense, so he’s not one to go out on a limb trading if he can work his way into a knockout. Trading = offensive minded fighters = leave yourself open to get hit. Tho he’s careful, he has a pretty high knockout percentage. he was 10-0 with 5 Ko’s at one point, then he became 15-0 with 10 Ko’s, 5 stragiht KO’s. He’s calling out the champs now, and I feel he has the full package more so then the guys who are famous. Taylor leaves his left hand too far down, trades when he is faced with pressure as opposed to boxing on his toes, doesn’t always clinch when he’s hurt. Ward can match his speed if not beat it, has better defense, can do conventional or southpaw, he can roughhouse inside, or box on the oustide, and his ring smarts beats taylor. I would have ward beating taylor in the 8th or 9th round. Pc!

he follows the conventional wisdom in you don’t go for knockouts, you let them come.
