Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Klitschko-Gomez and March Badness
Pre-fight notes:
- Klitschko-Gomez starts at 6pm ET on ESPN Classic. March Badness starts at 9pm on PPV.
- I listed all of Sheika's defeats because I couldn't pick the three most notable, and also to further say, "Hey, this guy's never beaten anyone, and has lost to every good fighter he ever faced besides a majority decision against Glen Johnson." He also lost to Tony Booth, who was 28-44-7 going into the fight.
- Herrera's other two losses were also stoppages. So he's 16-5 with 16 wins by knockout and five losses by knockout. He's like Alejandro Berrio II.

Those were just dumb
Seriously? A 13 foot ring? With a rope 9 inches off the mat? Really dumb mistakes, but also really easy to fix. Not something anyone should have been making a fuss about.

Oh by the way… I went to last nights FNF. It was kickass. I saw Marquez and Hopkins. I didn’t get a chance to mingle with them. The crowd went apeshit it was clear that Marquez was in the house. I was told by a buddy of mine when I was at work that he was at the Best Buy shopping around before the fight. People recognized him and was cool about giving pictures and talking to fans.
Pretty good card and a bargain for 82 dollar ringside seats. It is nice to have these small fight venues. It was a packed house. They did good promotion, seats were 7,27,57, and 82 bucks.
Everyone and their mother boo’ed the scorecards at the end. I thought Roman won. Nonetheless they put together a nice scrap. The russian guy, looked like Kosta but just doesn’t have the pop he had. I expected a KO. Andrade looked like a stud and was freaking huge compared to the guy he was matched up with.

For the people going to watch
The most grappling based of these fights is certainly going to be Monson vs Nelson. Monson is a former world submission grappling champion who is like 5’9" and built like a brick shithouse. Nelson is so fat that its hard not to mock him but he’s actually a very skilled Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown to black belt level grappler. Pretty much he stays fat because it benefits his style. Monson should give him a clinic on the ground all the same as he has a more positional based amateur wrestling + submission style.
All that said who knows. Maybe Nelson doesn’t want to go to the ground with Monson and scores some fluke KO. That’s the appeal some guys see in MMA. So if you for some reason DESPISE the ground game that would PROBABALY be the fight to take a dump during. I’ll be watching it as I’ve learned the nuances a bit and I’ll try to do color for whats going on here to explain to those uninformed that are watching.
Lashley is of course a former pro wrestler. He also is a 3 time NAIA, I think thats Jr. College, (which for the record in wrestling is comparable to D-1 level athletics not in depth but in that there are the random world class level guys that end up there). Guida is a complete toolkit who couldn’t make weight for his chance to be on the UFC’s reality show and botched his one break in an otherwise completely mediocre career. Stepping stone for Lashley to crush basically. I have no affinity for Guida and hope for a brutal beatdown.
Din Thomas is getting past his prime but used to be a very exciting and dynamic stand up fighter. I recognize Lemley’s name but can’t place any of his fights.
Hallman and Ruiz hopefully is a sloppy slugfest. Beyond that I’m not too concerned about it.

NAIA is tiny colleges
Not JCs per se, but really really small schools. It’s MANY MANY MANY levels below NCAA.

In wrestling though
Its a different story. Division 2 guys regularly win National championships. D-3 guys often jump up to D-1 and are successful. Circumstances sometimes even have Junior College guys ranked #1 in the nation. As much as Tito Ortiz annoyed me. He was a JC national champion and a nationally ranked D-1 level guy.
Kermit Cintron went to a JC but was ranked #10 in the nation his Frosh year just as a more relative example

It's a different level completely though
NAIA is non-scholarship for starters. It’s just not even the same level of competition, and it’s very rare to have any elite level players come out of lower divisions, and much rarer even for NAIA.

I meant to put this in the prediction post or in this post, but I forgot both times. It’s not that amazing or interesting, but for those that picked Roy by stoppage: Roy Jones Jr. has not stopped anyone inside the limit since beating Clinton Woods (TKO-6) on September 7, 2002. Since then he’s 5-4 and has been knocked silly twice.

I am slightly pissed at the sports “Gods” right now (not that I believe there are sports Gods). Michigan’s in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 11 years and they tip their second-round game at 5:56, while boxing on ESPN Classic starts at 6. Like, screw you.

A punch in the face can be a pretty good cure for laziness. I think Shaq would have adjusted to boxing. He was lazy, at times, in his NBA prime, because (a) he was so dominant that he could be and (b) Lakers have always played lazy (though I guess this discounts his time at Orlando).

Gomez pawing pawing pawing to start. Vitali pawing back at him. It’s like cats sparring.
Now they hug.
Back to paw. And Klitschko tries to double fist him or something. Klitschko looks INTENSELY immobile. Like amazingly stiff. It’s Valuev-level stiff. Klitschko looks like he cannot actually move. This is a terrible first round. He’s throwing these right hand haymakers from nowhere, has no jab, and looks absolutely horrendous. Like seriously.

Klitschko-Gomez R2
I really can’t get over how stiff Vitali is. Gomez is throwing a few counters and landing here and there so he’s winning basically by default thus far. Klitschko with a jab. Now he’s back to the awkward “get away from me!” punching.
Klitschko with a jab and a right. Very slow, but landed. Gomez should really go to the boy right now. He’s right there for the picking. Vitali throwing chopping rights, Teddy says he’s giving his height away and he’s totally right. Kenny calls Klitschko’s rights this round “two sharp, jarring right hands” — they didn’t really appear to jar Gomez to me. He just moved back and reset. Klitschko landing a few. Gomez getting close very easily and doing nothing. Bell rings and Klitschko can’t stop himself from punching after it sounds because ten seconds earlier he’d started winding up.
Klitschko 10-9

Klitschko-Gomez R3
I don’t get what Gomez is doing. Vitali looks completely ripe for the picking in there and Gomez is lunging or getting inside and doing nothing with it. He’s not attacking a guy that clearly has come in off his game. Klitschko starting to land the left hook with relative ease and Gomez has no answer for it. Vitali looks like he’s warming up, he doesn’t look nearly as stiff, and he’s just throwing ugly, lazy rights to go with that left hook when he can. Gomez is giving this away.
Vitali has Gomez on the run now. Klitschko’s two winning rounds are far better than Gomez’s one.

Klitschko-Gomez R4
Vital throwing sledgehammer shots now. Not pretty, not scientific, just thudding shots as Gomez appears to have no idea what to really do. This fight is butt fugly and rotten to the core. I’m not trying to be a total dick or anything, but this is so unathletic-looking that it’s amazing to me. And Klitschko is starting to completely dominate this horrible fight. The eye is swelling for Gomez.
Total control from Klitschko now as they keep trying to sell me that Gomez is providing a “stern test.” He’s really, really not. He was for a round.

He's making a lot of dumb mistakes
Not attacking the body, circling in the wrong direction, not throwing enough in general, not moving his head when he comes in. His trainers should be reminding him these things, but Gomez just isn’t fighting well. These are things I’ve seen him do before.

Klitschko-Gomez R5
Gomez now bleeding. Klistchko is throwing ENTIRELY with his arms. He has no torque on his shots. Klitschko is working around the ring very slowly, which is more that Gomez is just letting him do it. Gomez starts to turn it up a little bit. Stiff right from Vitali, still all arm. That was a square shot — if Vitali wasn’t still stiff (he’s better than early on, but he still doesn’t look good) and had his ass into that shot, Gomez might’ve been turfed.
Another fairly easy round for Klitschko, but Gomez did slightly better I guess.

Klitschko-Gomez R6
Teddy Atlas tells me that things were definitely better back when everyone was better at sports than they are now, anywhere from 20 to 50 years ago.
Gomez falls down as he’s either tripped up, slips, or Klitschko sort of dragged him down with the hand behind the head. Whatever it was, that’s about all this ugg-fest was missing. A guy falling over. It’s complete now.
Sadly this is still 1000% better than Wladimir-Ibragimov or Valuev-Holyfield.
Klitschko keeps landing a few thudding blows here and there, and there’s a few shots that get Gomez to lunge and hug. That’s really all he’s doing anymore. Hugging. Klitschko has a cut on his forehead from a clash of skulls. Looks like it’s near his hairline.
Another Klitschko round.

Klitschko-Gomez R7
Gomez pressing a little more in the first minute. When he actually throws real punches with the intent of landing them on Klitschko’s face (forget the body, since Gomez has), he seems to frustrate Vitali. Gomez has Klitschko backing down! Good left, and another there. Nice stuff. He’s looking much better.
Oops — BIG RIGHT FROM VITALI! Gomez goes down. Klitschko pressing and going for the kill. BIG right! Now he’s just firing with all he’s got. Clubberin’ right hands. Gomez wrestles Klitschko to the ground. NOW it’s complete. A tackle. All the uggo points.
Gomez is getting destroyed in there now. This is all but over. Another right lands! He makes it out of the round, though.

Cos I'd take Hagler over most heavies in history, P4P, and also over "6 weight world champion" Oscar De La Hoya, and Marvellous Marvin never really messed about with his weight, did he?

Flores-Herrera R2
Herrera rushing at Flores to start the round, and BJ clinches up. These guys are totally against the idea of engaging the other in a fight, it would appear. Herrera really ought to just make him bang at all costs. He’s not going to win a decision. He’s never even GONE to a decision. The way he can win is via KO.
Herrera misses a wild right. BJ working the jab a little. Very stiff. He does have a perfectly fine jab. Herrera tries to work his way in but Flores cuts him off pretty easily. Flores with a jab to the body. Col. Bob says BJ is “setting everything up off the jab right now” — I’d like to see the result of this at some point. He’s using his jab and that’s all, staying out of Herrera’s wheelhouse. Now he tries to attack the body. Bell sounds as Herrera clips him with a right.
Fight stinks. Meet BJ Flores, everyone.
Flores 10-9
Flores 20-18

Are the posts showing up? Someone confirm. If they are not, go to the main page and then re-enter the thread. It got goofy I think. Because I did that and 17 new posts came up for me.

it shouldn't be that slow though
I had a ton of posts that just did not show up for me so I was making sure that wasn’t happening for everyone.

LET YOUR HANDS GO.
What is your last name? Flores…
There must be 50% Mexican in him… go all Juan Diaz and throw punches with conviction.

Flores-Herrera R3
Herrera’s lack of aggression really surprises me. I have to say I expected more of a banger than this. Actually now he’s starting to work. Col. Bob says this is a “real good fight.” I promise you it isn’t.
BJ finds the right hand. Now he goes back to the jab. Flores working fairly nicely near the end of the round, and he damn sure hurt Herrera near the end of this one.

If Flores had been more aggressive, he could have scored a KO there
Herrera’s chin is pretty bad for a fighter of his level

Flores-Herrera R4
Flores’ fights are so dull to try and describe in text. He’s OK at what he does, but what he does is white bread kind of stuff. Flores working the jabs. Col. Bob: “Herrera’s as tough as they come, too.” He’s been knocked out five times. They come tougher.
Flores is:
1. Way better a boxer.
2. A better puncher, it would appear.
3. Stronger chinned.
Herrera’s high cheekbones are giving him some redness, but he’s in no trouble at all. BIG SHOT! Hey, then the bell rings. Rinse, repeat.
Flores 10-9
Flores 40-36
