Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Samuel Peter v. Eddie Chambers

Photo copyright Kurt Taylor / Saddo Boxing

Friday Night Fights begins from Los Angeles' Nokia Theater tonight at 10pm ET, and I'll be round-by-rounding at least the main event tonight, a heavyweight crossroads fight between former titlist Samuel Peter and American contender Eddie Chambers. Peter is said to be in rotten shape and Chambers is actually the favorite according to the sportsbooks, which is fairly surprising. Looks like that overwhelming loss to Vitali Klitschko took a real toll on Peter's big punching reputation.

Kind of a pick 'em fight for me as I can see either guy winning fairly handily. Chambers is far quicker, slicker and better disciplined. Peter is a much bigger puncher and won't be deterred by Chambers' (lack of) pop. In all honesty I'm not that psyched simply because I'm sick of trying to amp myself up into caring about crummy heavyweight fights, but it's fairly important so we'll be here tonight. Join me -- please, for the love of God, join me. I'll take Chambers in a split decision, for the record.

Well they are going to talk about Margarito and plastergate.

I am also interested in seeing who is the guest… Odds are it is going to be BJ Flores given that this past weekend he fought.

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

i like peter, big. KO 8.

chambers wont be able to keep him off him.

peters weight scares me a bit though.

Chambers UD here

Peter’s looked a bit tentative ever since the fight with Wlad, and this weight shows he didn’t take training very seriously. He’s going to get severely outworked.

Peters is was tired early against Wlad

I can not see how adding more weight will help with that. If Peters can not get Chambers out in the first 3 rounds I think Chambers will take over and cruise.

I go for Chambers UD also

Peter looked really, really slow against Vitali, so if he’s bigger…anyone know what he weighed in at?

I wonder how Chambers would do at Cruiser

Sure he probably makes more money at Heavy and he is fast enough to not get destroyed but I think he would be a lot better at a lower weight. If he wants to be that weight, 220+, he should at least put on muscle. Fat does nothing for you.

by TXroyal on Mar 27, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think he'd do that well, frankly

He has good handspeed compared to other HWs, but he’s immobile and his handspeed wouldn’t be anything special at cruiser. I do think he probably belongs there though. He could easily cut 20 pounds of flab.

Well, a little fat gives you some energy to burn. That said, Peter is… over doing it.

From what I’ve seen of him before, he’s one of the less talented of this year’s crop of Olympians.

1st round KO

Craig goes down every time Estrada actually hits him on the chin. Against a guy with a chin as bad as Craig’s, it’s hard to tell much of anything. Estrada looks soft, and would be well served by dropping to 154 or possibly even 147, if he can get there. A lot of wild swinging for a distinguished amateur, and good but not great handspeed.

Great news everyone

Peter vs. Chambers is up soon! Peter looks like he’s in his usual phenomenal physical condition, and will be more than ready to go 12 lightening-paced rounds with the hard-punching offensive machine Eddie Chambers. Sounds like yet another classic in this, the Greatest of All Heavyweight Boxing Eras!

In other news, the ecomony is doing fantastic and world peace is at hand.

Round 1

Chambers stays out at a distance, circling around Peter. Fighters alternate between jumping in to throw a jab or two. Despite being heavy, Peter still looks quick and active. Chambers is a bit more accurate with his punches, but Peter’s landing more punches and bigger shots. Chambers really throwing nothing but jabs.

Even though the fight is staying way on the outside, Peter seems to be outboxing Chambers. If Peter’s conditioning holds up, this will be a long night for Chambers. Chambers is fighting his best fight and not that successful at it.

Round 2

Both fighters still mostly throwing jabs, but only Peter is committing to the body at all. Chambers is now landing his jab almost whenever he throws it, but it seems to have little effect and he’s not throwing it much. Peter finally starts to press in a little closer and attach the body, which oddly seems to allow Cha,mbers to fight off the back foot more, potshotting for a couple of nice punches.

As the lighter puncher, Chambers needs to throw more than he’s doing. And then Teddy mentions this same point. Neither guy seems to care about blocking much; Chambers; punches don’t hurt Peter at all, and Chambers is holding his hands too far apart to block anything.

For the second straight round, they stay mostly on the outside, but Peter takes it by being more active and landing the harder shots.

Round 3

For a big dude, Peter seems more mobile than Chambers. Peter finally has Chambers up against the ropes, starts teeing off, but doesn’t land much. Chambers just staying outside and not really throwing anything now.

Jabbing—-jabbing…Chambers finally lands his first power punch of the night, and it doesn’t seem to phase Peter.

If you told me before the fight that Peter would dominate a jabbing contest, I would have laughed, but that’s what’s happening.

Chambers finally lands a couple decent shots at the end of the round, but not enough to counteract Peter’s aggression and bigger punches the rest of the round.

Round 4

Peter seems to be slowing noricably. He’s still throwing, but the handspeed he was showing in the early rounds really isn’t there anymore. The James Toney conditioning plan isn’t paying off.

Punchstat says Chambers is landing at twice the rate of Peter. I guess I can believe it, but all of Chamber’s punches are little slappies, while Peter is actually landing power shots.

Jab jab jab. Chambers now throwing the jab more and landing it on Peter at will. Peter tries attacking the body, but he’s still staying on the outside and not really attacking enough. He gets Chambers on the ropes and doesn’t take advantage. Chambers finally lands a big shot square on Peter’s chin, but doesn’t follow it with anything. Chambers pretty clearly took that round.

39-37 Peter.

Round 5

Peter back to not being aggressive enough, Chambers back to jab jab jabbing and landing almost whenever he throws. Peter finally comes forward and puts together 6 punches, then can’t do anything for 20 seconds because he’s winded. Peter is still landing the occasional hard shot, but doesn’t seem to be hurting Chambers nearly as much as Povetkin did. Peter starts getting more aggressive, but his hands are so slow that Chambers blocks the entire combo.

Chambers throws and Peter lands a quick counter that actually stuns Chambers for a second, but not enough as Chambers won the rest of the round .

Peter 48-47.

Round 6

Peter’s practically gasping for air in his corner. Peter’s throwing a lot, but just not landing anything anymolre. Chanbers fighting a defensive fight now – it’s not his forte, but Peter has gotten so slow that he can get away with it. Halfway into the round and they’ve maybe landed 3 punches combined. Chambers finally opens up and pops Peter with a few punches, all of Peter’s counters still get blocked or avoided.

Chambers switches to southpaw and promptly gets popped on the chin by Peter and makes a P Diddy looking “wassup” face at Peter. Chambers goes back conventional and starts peppering Peter again, but still just jab jab jab. I think he’s thrown one straight right all fight.

Chambers round 57-57.

Round 7

Peter remembers to start moving his head again, and all of a sudden Chambers is missing with the jab. Peter tries getting inside for about 3 seconds, but doesn’t really do much. Back to a jabbing contest, and as tired as Peter is, he’s not going to win that fight. Sam Peter is just fighting an all out stupid game plan, not cutting off the ring, not throwing his usual clubbing overhand right, and not well conditioned enough to keep winning a jabbing contest.

More of the same, more of the same. Chambers landing pitty patty shots at will, Peter trying but not connecting much.

Chambers 67-66.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Mar 27, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Round 8

Peter now appears to be too tired to even hold his hands up. All of a sudden, he catches a wind, comes forward aggressively for about 20 seconds and lands some good shots. He keeps coming and throwing, but they’re arm shots with no mustard. Chambers thrwing jabs, but not really landing many of them either. This is the best Peter’s looked in many rounds. Chambers lands a few decent shots, but it’s nullified by one good Peter counter. Peter completely runs out of gas again around the 1:00 mark. The second wind is gone, but Chambers isn’t taking advantage. Peter still throwing more shots, though he’s not landing and they don’t have authority. Pretty rotten round for Chambers, much better for Peter than most recent rounds.

Round 9

Peter splits the guard with a couple of strong jabs early. Peter stalking and being aggressive. His corner probably told him he needs a knockout, or at least he’s fighting with a sense of urgency.

Teddy’s scorecard is all over the place, IMO, people let me know if I’m just on crack or something. Chambers with a nice combo, setting up a good overhand right with the jab. Chambers peppering Peter with the jab at will. For the first time all fight, Chambers is the one moving forward. Great last half round for Chambers, and he emphatically takes the round.

Chambers 86-85.

Anyway, Peter still being aggressive, not landing anytthing. Chambers a bit more aggreswsive, connects with half the punches he throws. Peter still landing the more effective shots, though his hands are slowing again at the 1:00 mark, and it’s turned into an outside fight again.

Round 10

Chambers back to circling and jabbing and landing insignificant shots at will. Peter back to not being aggressive enough and not landing anything when he is aggressive. Peter throws an 8 punch combo, lands nothing, and almost punches himself out. Chambers trying to be aggressive, but he’s picking a strange time to leave himself open. Almost cocky, Chambers lety his lead arm drop below his waist. Chambers is toying with Peter, which is dangerous with a minute left in the fight.

15 seconds left, and Peter is just standing there. Nothing effective from either fighter that round, but at least Chambers landed punches, and that’s an anticlimactic ending to the fight.

Chambers 96-94, but I could see it being wider for Chambers. I wouldn’t cry if it was a draw.

Sam Peter would have been able to win that fight had he been in better shape. His being lazy lost him the fight, and that’s really all there is to it.

In his last three fights, he was almost beaten by a high level gatekeeper, soundly destroyed by a robotic 37 year old coming out of retirement and beaten by a fat cruiserweight who doesn’t throw power punches.

I couldn’t care less if I ever see either of these two again. Chambers isn’t anything special, but this win probably pushes him into the heavyweight top 10 by default. The only legitimate HW prospects who are close to a title are Povetkin and Haye. Hopefully this next wave of up and coming heavies (Wilder, Fury, Solis, Hamer, Gomez, David Price when he goes pro, Camarelle if he goes pro, Michael Hunter if he goes pro) will be better than the current crop. There’s really just a whole lot of shit out there right now.

FWIW

With as weak as HW is right now, I think Cunningham or Adamek could move up and immediately be top 7 or 8, and Cunningham doesn’t have the chin for HW and Adamek doesn’t have the size for HW.

That was just sloppy and unsatisfying

Sam Peter has all the physical gifts: huge head, no neck and killer punching power. He’s just lazy as hell. Not too excited about Eddie Chambers after that either. He still needs a lot of work.

I was flipping thru my cable guide and noticed that I could order the JCC Jr PPV English feed or see the free Mexican feed on Azteca. What to do? I think I will DVR the Mexican feed and go out.
