CompuBox punch stat report for Williams-Wright

Looking over the stats, it's just incredible how active Williams was against Winky. Throwing 106 punches in round 12 is beastly. Paul threw almost 1100 punches total to Winky's 511, and they landed at the same rate. Pretty incredible offensive performance from Williams.

One thing the computer numbers don’t show that I predicted coming in… that was Winky’s susceptibility to the southpaw right hook and left uppercut. He was almost always there for it when Paul threw them. I thought that Winky’s trademarks against the hordes of orthodox fighters he’s faced over the years would work against him in this fight, and I believe they did.

I thought the most relevant factors were that Winky is not a big puncher, mostly throws jabs, PW throws 80 + punches almost every single round and couldn’t be hurt by Margo. I never thought Winky had a chance in that fight.

I don’t think the fight is much closer if Winky’s in his prime, whenever that precise moment was. Winky can’t hurt him, PW throws too many punches regardless of how good Winky’s defense was/is.

he may have been buzzed in the 11th, but he was never what I would call ‘hurt’. There was never a moment where PW was in any imminent danger of being stopped, losing his legs, going down, etc. And, it wasn’t like PW coasted through the end of the fight, after a sloppy 11th he turned in a dominant 12th. And, it’s really not necessary to keep saying, but he was probably fighting a guy with loaded gloves.

well yeah PW wasn’t rubber legged, but i do seem to remember him immediately backing off out of the fear of being dropped. to me thats hurt.

about the loaded gloves, i don’t know. i know margarito’s whole career is tainted, but can a man really take all the punches that PW did when the other dude had bricks in his gloves? its come to my understanding that that shit basically guarantees a KO, yet margarito only managed to hurt paul williams in the 11th round.

oh alright. as i’m sure i’ve mentioned i’m relatively new to boxing (only been a fan for 6 years now), and i’m ashamed to admit i’ve honestly never heard about using plaster before the margarito scandal so i’m pretty ignorant in that regard.
