Joe Santiago. Basically, he decided to stay in-house and go with his nutritionist, who is a close friend. On the other hand, Santiago has no real training experience whatsoever. Cotto is experienced enough at this point that he can probably get away with this for one fight, but I hope he goes with someone else when he's not already in a camp. Also, hopefully he gets an experienced second who's able to give tactical advice in the corner during the fight. (Link in Spanish)

I used to go out with a dietitian… and one thing that I learned is that most of the people who are so called nutritionists, are full of shit. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist but a dietitian is a person who actually went to school and knows what they talking about.

He might be a dietitian

I have no idea. I don’t know if there’s a different word for it in Spanish, I just said nutritionist because that’s how I translated it.

clotty in

the 9th, tko.

a nutritionist? is he serious?

i think just about everyone on this message board is more qualified.

i’m seeing visions of mike tyson in tokyo with a water balloon on his swelling eye.

its never, ever, a good idea to go into a fight with an inexperienced trainer.

No it is not a good idea especially up against a solid fighter like Clottey. But I think Cotto, like brick says, will be ok for at least one fight. I am not counting Clottey out but I am going with Cotto in this one, probably a decision win. This should be a good one

Cotto and Top Rank

Does anyone know if Cotto plans to stay with Top Rank for future fights? I remember a story in which Cotto was disappointed in their support for (as someone so elequently put) Margacheato. Just wondering

He also does promotion

No one quite knows what’s going to happen at the end of the year when his contract is over with. He’ll probably stay with them or Goldenboy will probably take advantage. He also commented about a month ago that there might be a possibility of promoting himself with his company, but I doubt that will work successfully. If I am not mistaken the only fights he has ever promoted have been in Puerto Rico other than that I am a blind mice. But I doubt Top Rank will allow this to happen. Again, time will tell.

not the news I wanted to hear as a Cotto fan

I know that Cotto is experienced, but as others have pointed out, Clottey is not an opponent to take lightly. I believe that Josh’s style is problematic for Cotto to begin with, and not having a (good) trainer to fine tune and help Miguel gameplan makes this an even more dangerous fight for him.

If this falling out had happened before the Jennings fight, I’d feel better about it.

Cotto might be too confident for his own good.

really sorry to hear this. I’ve never seen it work. Anybody got an example of where this has worked cuz I can’t think of one? Gameplan, execution. It’s been tried, it just doesn’t work.

For some of his training during the Margo fight, Cotto basically trained himself at times. The only time I remembered seeing him training with his uncle was when hitting the pads. Other times he just looked at Cotto from far away and kept on walking. But you saw his outcome of the fight, an entirely different style.

I can say that it is a good thing that Clottey is not an all out aggressive fighter, although very effective when he attacks,he does tend to spend a lot of time in a defensive position. I think this is where Cotto gains the advantage in the fight.I’m sure Cotto will find a way to get around Clottey’s defense I just wish he picked an experienced trainer to help him come up with it.

I dont think its that big a deal for this fight. Hes got to know something we dont. And its not like he is handling a young prospect who needs to be carefully developed, he may want to focus on conditioning. A lot of nutritionists are also personal trainers and they get a ton of cross over clients.
