Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Cory Spinks v. Deandre Latimore
The fights start at 11pm ET tonight on Showtime. It's been a while since we've done a Spinks fight. Not long enough in my estimation.

Where do you see him having three notable losses? He has one, to Ian Gardner, which is the only loss listed.

I cheated
and edited if for you. It said he had losses to Hopkins and Tito as well. Plus I wanted to move this on top of the Kendall Holt news.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
well goddamn it
Thanks for fixing it. Oh, Hopkins and Vargas — I see it on my template now. Yeah that was the Winky section

If anyone wants it: HBO 24/7 theme (MP3)
It’s not the best quality in the world, but you can easily make it into a ringtone or whatever if you’ve had trouble finding it in the past. I’ve had it for a while (and duh, it’s my ringtone) but with the series back I wanted to upload it for anyone that might want it.

I think I will pass on this fight….
I rather submit to being waterboarded than seeing another Spinks fight.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
it'll be a shocking classic now that you're skipping it

I figure no one’s all that psyched about Spinks that I have to be more than “pretty competent.”

Dammit, I just have to say that “Latimore-Spinks” is probably the first time in a long time I’ve picked a fight based mostly on how much I hate watching a fighter. I hate Cory Spinks boxing-wise. Just hate him. I have yelled at the TV like a maniac in the past watching Cory. “Effective aggression! Effective!” Some judges really seem to like him but some judges really seem to like synchronized swimming too.

Cory seems like a really, really, really nice guy and he’s got talent but if I never see him fight ever again then GREAT.

That's what I meant by "boxing-wise"
Cory the sous-chef? Great. Cory the formula-1 race car driver? Sign me up!
I shouldn’t feel “dutiful” about watching a fistfight, but that’s exactly how I feel every time I hear his name.

There's a few for me too
- Jaws
- Chinatown
- Unforgiven
- Blade Runner
- The French Connection
There are more, but I have watched each of those movies twice in a row, and I can’t stand listening to the same “song” twice in a row.

Also
I have had “Rocky” days, where I watch I-IV all in one day. If you ignore the stage-fighting, they are much better boxing movies then any that have ever been made, including stuff like Raging Bull and Somebody Up There. If I am in the mood, I cannot be interrupted until Rocky is on the top of the Russian mountain.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."

Raging Bull was GREAT
But the Rocky movies, as a whole, were better as far as telling the story of boxing in the modern era (including insane promotions, ridiculous challengers, the rise of Eastern European/Ex-Soviet boxers, etc.)

Even IV?
Come on. Rocky singlehandedly brings down communism in the Soviet Union.

“If I can change……..You can change…….Anyone can change.”
"Karma - there it was. The meaning of life, straight from Carson Daly's lips to my morphine-laced ears." -Earl Hickey
I get why it’s “awesome.” I don’t get why anyone thinks it’s “good.” It’s a horrible movie. Stallone takes everything good he’s ever done (Rocky, First Blood) and spends the next decade taking a shit on it.

Wilder/Rabotte Round 1
Well. Rabotte is coming out swinging early on as Wilder slaps with the right hand. HITS RABOTTE WITH A RIGHT HAND AND DROPS HIM!!! He gets up and doesn’t appeared to be wobbly. Rabotte is coming in and responding with limited effectiveness. Wilder hits him with the left jab. Left hook and right hand drop Rabotte for a 2nd time!!! This after the two exchanged some punches.
This fight is lopsided. Rabotte has been knocked out in every loss. WHAT A RIGHT HAND!!! AND ANOTHER! RABOTTE IS DECKED!!! THIS FIGHT IS OVER!

Devon goes “HA!” a lot. Like almost every punch. “HA!” is no “FWAH!”
It’s very clear already that Chuy is out of his depth with Devon’s handspeed and also the fact that Devon is left-handed. DOWN GOES ALEXANDER ON A COUNTER RIGHT! Wow! Not hurt but — wow, they’re calling that a slip? I thought he was just off balance and hit.
Alexander is flicking his jab but not…landing a lot. He will though. And he pops Chuy with a counter right. Rodriguez stayed back the entire round and basically felt it out. Or he’s overwhelmed by talent.

Devon starting to stick the nice counter shots now. They’re not even really counters. They’re basically pre-emptive counters. Right when Chuy thinks about throwing Devon hits him with a right hook. Chuy looks over to his corner when he ties up about halfway into the round. He’s lost.
Rodriguez still has no idea what to do. Devon is just way too good for him. It was the obvious with the matchup, but here it is in practice. Devon isn’t landing a whole lot, but he’s winning this fight in a cakewalk.

Chuy can get in, but he can’t do anything once he’s there. Can’t or won’t, anyway. Chuy is trying to mug him but there’s nothing effective about it other than he doesn’t get hit with hooks while he’s there. He’s trying to wind up and dig to the body now. He’s making this a barroom brawl without the action you might want there. Rodriguez DRILLED with a big left hand. Devon knows that hurt him.
Rodriguez holding on when he’s hurt again. He’s just trying to make it out of this round. Right from Chuy but he has like no power. Little punching at the bell, and Alexander’s corner asks the referee to watch the holding. “No it ain’t both of ’em, man!”

Nice left to the body by Alexander, then he clips Chuy with a left while Rodriguez tries to tango. I get what Chuy’s doing here, trying to take Alexander’s handspeed away, but he’s just not doing anything offensively. This is like sparring so far. “Crowd him, see how he does.”
At the same time, we’re seeing a Devon Alexander performance that just isn’t…good. He’s way off from being able to take a top 140-pounder if this is any indication. He’s got a load of natural talent but he’s inaccurate and not beating on this guy, which he should be.

Alexander is throwing more to start the round after Kevin Cunningham gave him the business, but overall it doesn’t look much different. Chuy deserves some, erm, “credit” for this, I suppose, but what is Alexander waiting to happen? Chuy hasn’t thrown this entire fight. Rodriguez with a straight right that lands square. Alexander goes back to his kung-fu movie without moving an inch.

Well why front at all any longer? This fight is crap.
The round is going mostly the same as it has the rest of the way. Alexander seems complacent tonight. He knows he can win this thing going away on the cards, that Chuy can’t hurt him, and that he doesn’t need to do much. This performance so far raises more questions than anything about Devon Alexander. Rodriguez landed about one clean shot this round, and Alexander flicked his jab out there a bunch.

The Rodriguez corner thinks Alexander has nothing left. That might help a lot if Chuy could punch or wasn’t already five rounds down at least.
Alexander shows some good stuff about a minute into this round. He’s got it all. He’s just got to face someone that might actually make him go to a second gear. Then we’ll learn something new. He can sleepwalk through this level of opponent. Rodriguez walks in and gets SMOKED with a beautiful left hand. That’s the type of handspeed Devon has — he could be nasty if he puts it all together.

Pretty devastating for Duddy though. Lyell was pretty easily handled by David Lopez. He gave Kirkland a tougher fight than people expected, but he didn’t really win rounds in that one either.

Escalante/Starks Rd 1
This is a 10 round fight. Both fighters feeling each other out. Stark hits Escalante with a short left hook. Escalante backs Starks against the ropes and hits him with a right hand but not flush. Left jab by Escalante and now connects with a shot to the body. Good double body shot by Escalante but Starks fires back with a good right hand. Decent first round and Escalante just landed a good left hook with Starks against the ropes to end the round. Definitely an Esky round (I’m calling him that).
10-9 Escalante
Seattle: Where the sun coming out or snow falling takes up 20 minutes of a 1 hour local news broadcast.
Spinks-Latimore R1
Latimore with a quick jab right off. Latimore coming out, and man but Spinks is throwing. Weird. Good right from Latimore again. Three St. Louis southpaws on the card tonight.
Spinks with a couple shots, and Latimore sends him back with big shots! Uh, we’ve got a fight.
Latimore is downright wild in there. Spinks lands! Latimore counters back and lands! Latimore with A MASSIVE LEFT HAND ON THE BUTTON! DOWN GOES CORY SPINKS! Spinks thinks he’s OK, but Latimore is coming for him with about 1:30 left.
Another left by Latimore, and he was wobbled just a bit. Spinks firing back, trying to get Latimore to respect him as an offensive fighter. Right hand Latimore! Well fuck.
Wild left misses. Latimore has come out like a fighter that needs to win this one or die. Spinks is still throwing back. They’ve come out to put on a show in St. Louis. Fun first round.

Esky-Stark Rd 2
Sorry I kept saying “Starks”.
Esky comes firing and he gets a combination off on Stark. He’s cornering him against the ropes quite often and landing body punches aplenty. They stalk each other mid-round. Esky’s got quick hand speed. Stark is looking to counter but can’t land and gets popped over the head with a right hook. Another combination landed by Esky and Stark responds with a counter right hand. Esky just continues to corner Stark on the ropes though, final seconds of round 2 and Stark catches Esky with a right to end the round. Not enough to win the round.
20-18 Escalante
Seattle: Where the sun coming out or snow falling takes up 20 minutes of a 1 hour local news broadcast.
Spinks-Latimore R2
Right hook by Latimore to the chest. Latimore makes Spinks duck around, and Latimore lands another big left. If Spinks slows this down he can outbox Deandre all night. But I think Spinks is here to fight. I also think he’s a little off his game.
HUGE right hook by Latimore. Spinks doesn’t budge. Another decent right hook. He’s got that thing working. And he’s firing again. He’s countering the counter-puncher and making Spinks throw first. Spinks looks horrible in there. Latimore’s shots are wide and connecting anyway. He’s got Cory’s number.
Spinks came in for this at 152 3/4 — he might have overtrained.

Spinks is starting to crowd Latimore a little better. Left hand from Latimore lands nicely. Spinks is just not good tonight. I don’t think he’s got it at all. Latimore is punishing him.
This is weird watching Spinks looking “old.” He’s 31 and doesn’t take punishment, but a fighter like him…man, if he loses his slickness, it’s over. He can’t punch and he lives and dies on defense. This was a closer round, but Latimore takes it again.

Spinks standing in the pocket and getting hit some. And then Spinks stands there and eats a right hook. Cory’s reflexes are not sharp. Latimore hits him with another counter right. Good stuff from him. Even though Spinks has made some adjustments, he’s not moving well and he’s getting hit repeatedly. He doesn’t have the offense to stay in a fight like this. He’s clearly losing.
Sneaky left by Spinks. Now Cory is starting to crowd him again. Right uppercut to the body, and now he keeps throwing. They are trading barroom shots in the closing moments. Arms wild.

Latimore drilling away. Spinks is just standing there. He’s taking them well, but they mean something. Cory Spinks is cut now on his left eye. Nothing is going right for him. Latimore with a couple more thudding shots. Latimore is throwing WIDE shots still. He is going to get drilled by someone that can punch and throws straight shots if he doesn’t take what he needs to improve upon out of this fight. Spinks has been awful. Spinks with a couple slapping shots to the ear. Latimore has slowed down some, too. But Spinks’ footwork has been brutal. He’s not running, he’s barely even moving. Left hand from Spinks, and a good one, and Latimore gets back with a right. I don’t think Latimore has a whole lot left.

This has really turned into quite an interesting fight all around.
Sharp left from Spinks catches Latimore. I really think Deandre might’ve gassed himself out early. Spinks is actually pressuring now and starting to wear on Latimore it seems. Latimore is backed up to the ropes and just sort of leaning back. Spinks now picking off the shots. I think Cory’s legs might be coming back.
Latimore getting hit hard and sharp now. Spinks is moving his body well and avoiding big shots by Latimore, and Deandre is ultra wild and just not landing much. Big “Cory!” chant goes up. Good crowd.
Right hook from Latimore, but he’s caught with another clean left. Boy, this has gotten really intriguing. Latimore is wearing out, Spinks is taking over, and we’ll have to see who’s got what down the stretch.

Spinks working inside. He’s drawn Latimore into a dirty inside fight and that probably favors the vet that has been in the deep waters. Right hand by Latimore from deep down somewhere. Didn’t seem to have a lot on it though. It just happened to land more than anything. Spinks with a straight left and a good one, but it just missed going flush. Latimore gets off the ropes. He’s letting himself get smothered in there.
Back to the ropes, Spinks pounds away. Mostly blocked stuff but it looks like somethin’. Spinks with a left hand that lands. Deandre’s getting something of a lesson right now.

Deandre with a right that lands at the end of a combo that mostly does not. Spinks staying in there, but getting hit some to start this round. Left hand by Spinks catches Latimore. They trade right hooks. Spinks on the chase now — yeah I said it.
About a minute left in a toss-up round. A few good shots from Deandre, short and landing on the inside. He needs more of that if he’s going to let Spinks bull him. Latimore misses a right hook that would have sapped his energy on Fight Night.

Spinks still just wearing and wearing and wearing on Latimore. Latimore hasn’t had many opportunities to land the long shots in a good while. Latimore is really struggling offensively. It’s not because he’s not trying, either. Spinks instead of running has stayed in the pocket and right in his face. He’s taken the long shots away. That’s what a good fighter does to adjust. Latimore, win or lose, learns something tonight. Hopefully anyway.

Spinks-Latimore R10
This has become a rough fight. It’s not pretty, but it’s clearly favoring Spinks. I don’t think it’s as much of Spinks’ fight as the Showtime guys do; they think it’s clearly for Spinks. I still have Latimore up because he dominated the first half of the fight IMO. Spinks has just taken him and done stuff with him. He adjusted and made it come together, taking what Latimore was doing well entirely away from him.
Spinks is busier, but he gets caught a couple times. This one’s going to the stretch. That first round knockdown might be the difference. Good left hand by Latimore! A straight left misses. Brawling finish.
Clear Latimore round, I think.

Latimore DRILLS Spinks with a left hand on the turn! Spinks regroups quickly, and now he’s throwing! Long left lands. I’ll say it now: This is about 95% better than I thought it’d be.
They’re leaning in close again. Both guys have left what they had in the ring, even though I think that’s because Latimore isn’t yet in the type of 12-round shape he’ll want to be in and Spinks has just been kind of off. Spinks with a BIG left. These two are fucking wailing now. I’m pumped, man.

Spinks-Latimore R12
Both guys need this round. For one thing, one of the judges is Adalaide Byrd. She might have it 109-99 for Latimore for all we know. Or Q-to-Tree.
Latimore down — ruled a slip. Looked like it might’ve been a right hand. Charles lost it, but I didn’t see it clean. The referee’s been excellent so I defer fully.
Latimore is about to fall over from exhaustion. Spinks is on the chase. About a minute left and Cory is throwing what he’s got. He’s letting it all hang out. This is sloppy, desperate, and damned entertaining.
When they’re tied up, Latimore is still throwing little shots to stay busy. He’s not giving it away. I think he’s just spent. 30 seconds to go. They end it throwing. Heck of a surprising fight, and a good one at that.
Good final round for Spinks, too. Very close fight.

CORY SPINKS VIA SPLIT DECISION
Hey, good for him. Tough fight to score, fun fight to score. Get back at it, Deandre.

It wasn't bad scoring
But 115-112 Spinks seemed the most off to me. Adalaide, of course.

Great fight night! Ton of knockouts, 1 boxer banned from Illinois, and a split decision win for Spinks.
Good night all! Look forward to Froch/Taylor.
Seattle: Where the sun coming out or snow falling takes up 20 minutes of a 1 hour local news broadcast.
Don King: "GET READY FOR IT, MAYWEATHER!"
What.

"Get ready Floyd Mayweather!"
I seriously think he’s lost it.
Spinks wants Mayweather.
That makes one person on earth. We narrowly avoided that before, we’ll easily avoid it now.

Boy and how
I am going to watch this fight and score it again. I had Christ’s score, and looking back I think I had the same rounds. This was a tough fight to score, given how gassed Deandra was from 5-9, but Cory still didn’t look very effective to me.
Don King wants Floyd to make it rain on Cory. Don King is delusional.

Don still thinks he's going to sign Floyd
And he’ll threaten to impose Mayweather-Spinks on the world if the other fighters don’t accede to his demands.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I AM THE KING!
ACCEDE TO MY DEMANDS! DO SO IMMEDIATARILY WITH THE UPMOSTEDNESS OF HASTIOSITY!
