Q&A Koji Sato

This Saturday Japan’s Koji Sato 14-0(13) will look to become the WBA Middleweight champion of the world when he challenge’s Felix Sturm 31-2-1(13) in his back yard of Germany. He’s a massive underdog to take Sturm’s belt but that doesn’t stop the hard hitter from Tokyo looking to gate crash the Middleweight division. Though he has only 14 fights and 41 rounds of pro experience he had a successful amateur career and at 28 isn’t a novice. Here’s what Sato had to say on various subjects.

Anson Wainwright – Firstly you fight Felix Sturm for the WBA Middleweight title on 25 April in Germany. What do you know about him?

Koji Sato – He is a great champion who has defended his title many times. I have very high respect for him.

Anson Wainwright – What can you tell us about your style and how you fight?

Koji Sato – I am the underdog, so I will do the best I can and try to have a favorable night on Saturday.

Anson Wainwright – How is training doing? Who do you have for sparring? Where are you training?

Koji Sato – I have not had very long time to train for this fight. I did have a training camp in USA with some good sparring as well as my typical training in Tokyo.

Anson Wainwright – You have fought only once outside of Japan that being your debut, are you at all worried about get a fair result on the cards from the judges in Germany, do you think you have to knock him out to win the title?

Koji Sato – I have a very high respect for the WBA judges. I will trust that they will judge the fight fairly. My style is aggressive so I hope to connect as many punch as possible.

Anson Wainwright – How did you get into Boxing?

Koji Sato – My older brother was a boxer and that was my biggest influence to get me into boxing.

Anson Wainwright – What do you like to do when your not Boxing?

Koji Sato – I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my niece, dining out and eating good food, collect anime dvds.

Anson Wainwright – For those people who don’t know much about you, what can you tell us about yourself?

Koji Sato – I hope to get into politics after I become world champion.

Anson Wainwright – Who has been your toughest opponent in your career to date?

Koji Sato – Adam Vella. That was the longest I had gone in the ring.

Anson Wainwright – Before turning pro in 2005, did you have an amateur boxing career? If so what did you achieve?

Koji Sato – Yes, my record was 138-3, approximately 100 rsc, I was 5 time All Nippon Champion.

Anson Wainwright – How is Boxing doing in Japan at the moment? It seems to be thrieving looking at it from Europe.

Koji Sato – I hope to win the title and bring boxing popularity back to the level it has in Europe.

Anson Wainwright – If you were to beat Felix Sturm for the title what would it to for you personally and how popular would you become?
Koji Sato – Hopefully to the point I will be able to meet the Prime Minister.

Anson Wainwright – Finally do you have any message for Felix Sturm?

Koji Sato – Please take it easy on me.

I was actually enjoying reading that until the end. For some reason I don’t think he’s being cheeky.

Looks like a CK One commercial up there.

I wonder if casual German fight fans know this is a scam or not?
