Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Froch-Taylor and Lopez-Penalosa
We will be LIVE tonight with round-by-round coverage and scoring of BOTH of the big cards on American TV. Showtime kicks us off with Froch-Taylor at 9pm (B-side: Green-De Leon Jr.) and HBO joins the party at 10pm ET with Lopez-Penalosa (B-side: Peterson-Blain).
I think there's a decent chance I'll be able to handle, in order: Green-De Leon Jr., Froch-Taylor and Lopez-Penalosa. The timing should work out -- should. Might not, but should.
Either way, someone will be around and we'll be here. Join us for what promises to be a hell of a night of boxing.

STURM-SATO
IF ANYONE HAS ACCESS TO THIS FIGHT I WOULDN’T MIND READING THE ROUND BY ROUND OF IT.
Thanks….

I *might* do it
There’s Sturm-Sato and Balzsay-Masoe, but if I do bother I’ll only RBR the Sturm fight.

I do have it on though
I’ll update some, just not the usual RBR.

What does it mean
when someones notable loss is someone else notable win, TKO-1 in fact. Probably nothing but I think Penalosa is in for a beating. Moving up in weight and taking on one of the biggest punchers in boxing.
I was refering to Daniel Ponce de Leon

Sturm-Sato update
First two rounds Sturm looks like he doesn’t really give a shit. Sato is punching slowly and trying to flurry but Sturm is just playing D on him. Decent chance he gets Sato to punch himself out.

Especially for Froch/Taylor.

Good Evening Chaps
I’m posting from the UK. We are supposed to buy the Froch-Taylor fight online because nobody is showing it on TV over here. I have tried but the site won’t accept my particular card type. So I will be stealing it online and enjoying the posts here with you guys!
Currently watching a card thats promoted by HayeMaker (David Haye’s promotional company). Its a British Featherweight title fight. The fighters are Paul Appleby and Martin Lindsay. If thats more info than you cared for – I apologise!

Should be a tidy fight;
But I do think Appleby will stop him inside 7 rounds.
I hope so, anyway, I’ve had a fair bit of my hard-earned on it!! :)

How did u score Michael Maguire vs James Ancliff?
I had It 2-2 at very best, and i was leaning towards 3-1 to Ancliff.
*Maguire (20) is the haymaker prospect, an accomplished amateur and had a bit of hype behind him. The fight was scored to him 3-1. His opponent was furious with the scoring. Maguire was arguing with his corner between rounds and didnt look good in there at all. the matchmaker for Haymaker said he thought it was a draw and implied that Maguire needs to grow up a bit.
The other former amateur prospect looked like a decent operator. Definitely looks to have Good power to go with the technical skills. I would like to see him move up in standard a bit for his next fight.

Think it was 2-1 with one round even
Not exactly impressed by Maguire. Came in 4lb over. Thought it was a draw. Rhodes looked fairly relaxed in there. Despite what bunce said, I think he should have made the fight with Small

I expected you would say as much. Is it full steam ahead for Pavlik Vs. Abraham? Abraham’s promoter was on TV saying that he will go up to 168 if they can’t make the fight soon i.e. this year.
Haye is currently on TV trashing the Chagaev-Valuev fight. The fight setanta have been hyping all night which they will be showing. Oops

Pavlik-Abraham has been all but set for November assuming they both win in June. I figure it’ll go like this:
1. We all assume it’ll happen because they say so.
2. They both win.
3. We wait for the announcement.
4. Money issues!??!?!
5. It’s off!
6. Pavlik looks to fight Randy Griffin in Youngstown while Abraham mulls a move to 168.
7. It’s back on!

Green-De Leon R1
Good body shot by Green early. Nice counter right from Green. Green throwing a combo, blocked by Carlos. Body shot from De Leon. And he goes back, and then upstairs with a wild left hook. De Leon throwing a jab, then sweeps to the body with another wild left. De Leon sort of lunging at Green, but the jab is pretty effective before he swoops in. Four-punch combo by Green with about 25 seconds left. De Leon swinging the hooks to end the round, and a long, heavy right closes it out. “We’ve got a fight,” they say. They ain’t lyin’.

Green-De Leon R2
GREEN WITH A HUGE LEFT HOOK. De Leon is done. About 40 seconds in and he is on bad legs, but he wants to fight on.
He won’t last if Green attacks. De Leon fires back, Green wobbles him again! AND DOWN ON AN OVERHAND RIGHT! De Leon is in bad, bad shape.
De Leon just trying to hug him now. Green lunges with a left hook, another flurry and down again! He’s getting counted again.
De Leon fights on. Ref says he has one more shot.
Two chopping rights, and it’s finally over. A beatdown!

Froch-Taylor R1
Nice jab from Taylor. Hard right from Taylor catches Froch flush. And another, this time a counter shot. That one wasn’t as flush anyway. Two jabs from Froch. Now they trade jabs. Taylor looking for the 1-2, misses this time. Blocked on another try. Stiff jab by Jermain. He has a MASSIVE speed advantage. Even bigger than I expected, and I was aware Froch is slow.
Froch is really eating jabs, but he’s taking everything well so far. Hard right by Froch catches Jermain and backs him off. Left hook by Taylor glances. The 1-2 isn’t landing anymore for Taylor, but that left hook does find its home. Good first round for Jermain.

Froch-Taylor R2
Taylor standing in the center, seems like he wants to invite Froch in for counter opportunities. Froch trying to find range for his jab. Hard clubbing left by Froch. Jermain pumps the jab now. Jermain badly misses a giant right hand. That was a haymaker of haymakers. Uppercut lands for Froch. Froch is slinging a long jab, don’t know what he wants to do with it just yet. Taylor hook misses. Froch with a right. Now they trade at center ring after the gavel lands. Tougher round to score.

Froch-Taylor R3
1-2 from Froch, mostly blocked but the back end got in just a bit. Gus says Froch has “no rhythm.” I’m not terribly sure about that. He looked tentative in the first round but he’s settled in a bit. He’s clearly outgunned in pure skill, but he’s in there. Stiff right from Taylor, but Froch comes back! Wow, he took a vicious shot and really looked like it didn’t hurt him at all. Froch has a wicked chin for sure.
Left hook by Taylor. Stiff jab by Taylor. Hard right by Taylor sends Froch off balance. He might be hurt, he’s backing down. Jermain all over him, RIGHT HAND AND DOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HIS CAREER!
Up at seven, fighting on. This is Jermain as we haven’t seen him in a LONG time.
He’s getting himself off balance trying to charge. Taylor not fighting dumb, but drills Froch again at the end of the round. HUGE round for Jermain Taylor.

Froch charging him now, and his working his jab. Froch has calmed it down again. I just don’t know if he’s going to get enough in on Jermain to make a real difference. Froch-Taylor R5
Right hand by Froch. Taylor is moving around here really well, but Froch is throwing. Good combo by Taylor, ended with a left hook. Taylor is tying him up really well when Froch comes in. It’s been very effective. Froch has gotten nothing going with consistency. Gus had it right earlier when he said he just can’t get a rhythm.
Taylor getting caught a little bit, but he gets away and goes back to his jab. Nice left hooks by Jermain Taylor. Two more jabs from Jermain, and then he defends well on a combo from Froch. He’s trying to throw three or four at a time now. Taylor back with more jabs, and they end the round throwing.

Peterson/Blain
Peterson’s picked up is KO percentage in recent fights, but is still primarily a slickster. Blain has 3 KOs. I’m picking the “over” on this one. But my guess is that Peterson is just a bit better all around than Blain.
Hey, turns out Peterson beat Blain in the amateurs. Well, that intrigues me. I’m a big fan of both the Peterson brothers, both because I’m a DC-area native, and because I can’t help be moved by their story.

Froch is now throwing and landing his jab to start this round. Taylor with a right, then a left hook. Now he throws a double jab. Right hand by Froch. 1-2 by Froch. Taylor backs down a bit. Jab trade. Froch is starting to press some. Overhand right by Taylor is short. I’ll tell you, Froch is making a bit of a run this round. Taylor has a habit of getting lazy in the middle rounds…

Peterson-Blain R1
Both guys come out trading jabs and one twos. And we have an accidental headcut immediately over Blain. Well, that’s one way to keep it under 12.
Peterson with a straight right as he works Blain into a corner. Blain is trying to do more movement, while Peterson is more of the aggressor. There’s something you don’t write every day. Peterson hooks to the body and Blain moves away. Body work is probably smart by both fighters.
Peterson thought the 10-sec whistle was the end of the round. That could have gone badly, but Blain doesn’t take advantage.

Froch trying to club Taylor, and Taylor gets a little off balance. Don’t know if it was so much from the shot or just stumbling period. Counter left by Froch, and that one got Taylor’s attention for sure. Jab by Froch, Taylor’s is short. Froch looks like he got something in his eye.

Peterson-Blain R2
Peterson starts off and bullies Blain into a corner. Blain is content to counter punch, but he hasn’t really gotten anything through Peterson’s guard. Both trade near the corner, but it’s sloppy and nothing of substance lands.
Peterson flashes a good left hook up top, and another. It’s not really hurting Blain, but they’re the only shots of substance. Now THAT upstairs downstairs combo seemed to have an effect for a moment.
Blain with an uppercut on the inside, but Peterson still controlling the action and comes back with more for whatever Blaine gives him. Another hook on the inside at the end of the round, and another round in the bank for Peterson.

Taylor’s jab is really good tonight. I mean really good. It’s been the biggest difference in the fight all around. Again: This is a Jermain we have not seen in a good while.
Thudding right by Froch, partially blocked. Froch is a tough son of a bitch but he’s outclassed tonight. And that speaks very well for JT’s standing at 168.

Crowd gets a little rise after Blain stumbles, but it was just tangled feet. Peterson with another combo that ends with a crisp shot to the body. He keeps ripping left hooks to the body, and they’re his most effective punch by far. There’s another one. Those are killer for someone who is so dependent on movement like Blain.
Blaine catches Peterson going straight back with his best punch of the night. Blain every once in awhile catches Peterson at the end of his combos, but Peterson is still doing the better work. Still, if Blain can start timing Peterson going in and out, he could start to close the gap.

Peterson-Blain R4
Peterson hits with an uppercut on the inside. And then they wrestle for awhile. This fight isn’t too boring, but you get the feeling nothing really dramatic is going to happen.
Blaine dancing around the ring — and gets caught with an uppercut that snaps his head back. Good hook by Blain. Kellerman keeps stressing that Peterson has to fight with an eye for making himself a marquee name, and it’s unsure if he’s doing it. They’re right that Blain is the wrong guy to try and look exciting against.
Blaine lands another uppercut while going backwards. Peterson bullies him the corner and starts landing a it more. Those body shots are going to win the fight for Peterson. And if there is a KO for Peterson, it will be because he’ll have immobilized Blain with smart work early on.

Froch-Taylor R11
BIG right from Froch as he dominates another first minute. Right hand again lands. Jermain misses a big uppercut. Taylor’s nose bleeding. Froch with two uppercuts and Jermain is holding. He might be getting hurt in there. Oh boy.
Taylor with an uppercut! Froch with a right! Taylor throws back! Taylor holds on. Froch left hook is blocked. Froch is ALL OVER Taylor this round. LEFT HAND TAYLOR! Wow! Taylor throwing now! Froch fires back with an uppercut! This is NASTY!
Taylor with a right. Left hand Froch. Taylor chased to the corner. Taylor holding on again.
Froch 10-9

Peterson-Blain R5
Peterson flurries in the corner, but it was a shoeshine. Lennox Lewis is thrilled. Kellerman is less impressed. K is right.
Blain with a solid combo in the middle of the ring. Another good left hook to the body by Peterson. Then he measures him and lands a straight right. Blaine tries to counter off the ropes. Sometimes he lands, but there is no snap to his punches.
When they’re inside, Peterson is just clearly stronger. And he doesn’t fear Blain’s power, so he can take some shots to work at will.

BIG RIGHT by Taylor on a counter! And Froch comes back and backs him down. They are throwing bombs. This has become one hell of a fight, and I think if people thought Froch couldn’t fight they might need to change their minds now. This guy is a legit 168 pounder. TAYLOR HURT! TAYLOR GETTING DRILLED AND RUNNING! Froch chases. Froch is all over him, and Taylor is hanging on.
Right hand Froch! To the body, right hand! Right hand again. Taylor running. Taylor is hurt and still not there. This is crazy!!!
Froch with a BIG RIGHT AND TWO MORE SHOTS! HE’S UNLOADING! TAYLOR UP AND I DON’T KNOW HOW! FROCH AGAIN! FROCH THROWING AND THROWING! FROCH BACKED DOWN! WHAT BALLS BY TAYLOR! RIGHT HANDS BY FROCH AND DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!

40 SECONDS TO GO

FROCH GOING RIGHT AT HIM! FROCH THROWING AND THROWING THEY STOP IT!
17 SECONDS LEFT AND THE FIGHT IS STOPPED

Peterson-Blain R6
Nothing big going on. Blain is working a bit more, but not doing anything effective. Peterson hasn’t been as effective at imposing his will this round.
Blain counters well in the corner, then gets out. Good sequence for him. Another one of those step back uppercuts lands for Blain. Peterson’s taken his foot off the gas pedal, and Blain is winning the round.
And…there’s some sort of injury? And the ref stops it for that to check it out? Which you can’t do for just a random injury. And the ref sort of stops it, and Blain protests, and so he has the doctor check it out, and they’re going back at it. Poorly managed by the ref there.

Lopez/Penalosa Round 1
This crowd is pumped for this one. Penalosa gets a quick one-two combination off. Lopez held Penalosa’s head and hit him to the body. Good body shot again by Lopez. They stalk each other in the center of the ring. Penalosa sneaks a jab in there. Ref tells Lopez to keep his punches up. Penalosa seems tentative to throw power punches and Lopez nicks Penalosa a bit with an overhead right. The two slug it out at the center of the ring to end round 1. Penalosa wasn’t too bad. I give Lopez the round.
10-9 Lopez

Quick right hook by Penalosa countered by a Lopez strike. Lopez is geting Penalosa to the body and lands a combination. Back comes Penalosa with some shots of his own! Two punch combination backs off Penalosa! He’s against the ropes and takes a body shot. These guys are really throwing a lot of punches. Lopez lands a glancing left jab at the end of the round. This one is definitely a Lopez round.

Good body shot to the midsection by Lopez. He’s going to kill him with that. Left hook by Lopez and a low blow by Penalosa. Straight left hand connects for Lopez. So many body shots by Lopez. He’s going to wear down Penalosa at this rate. Two punch combination by Penalosa at the center of the ring. Pretty good fight so far. Penalosa caught with a right hand! We’ve got a war! Both men landing punches at a rapid pace and the round is finished off with a good right hand by Lopez. If he’s trying to make this a war then Penalosa will lose.

Punch zone is awesome. VICIOUS BODY SHOT by Lopez. He’s just pounding him right now. Penalosa is bending over a lot. Penalosa has landed just 3 power punches in this round. Another Lopez round.

This body shot bonanza is ripping apart Penalosa, who does catch Lopez with a left jab. Big left hand by Penalosa but they aren’t phasing Lopez at all. Uppercut lands for Lopez. Round 6
Lopez starting off strong this round, and Penalosa isn’t doing much. Lopez doing much of the same. body punch, uppercut, body punch combo. Penalosa finally starting to punch, but Lopez is all over him again. Penalosa might be hurt, Lopez is just blasting him. still a minute left in the round, and penalosa looks weak. Lopez is unleashing every punch in his arsenal. Lopez just won’t stop, and penalosa is just standing there. only 8 power punches landed for penalosa compared to lopez’s 60+. lopez ending the round strong
lopez 10-9

Round 6
Juanma digs in to the body, has Penalosa in the corner and throws a barrage to the head that mostly gets blocked, with a couple more body punches thrown in there. Juanma just keeps stalking and applying the pressure, throwing punches from all angles, and Penalosa is mostly shelling up at this point, not even trying to duck them. He’s blocking most shots to the head, but he’s taking a ton of damage to the body.
Lopez has him back on the ropes again. Big 6 punch combo to the body. Penalosa is up on the ropes, and Penalosa is wobbly. Lopez doing a great job of breaking him down, and just killing the body. Now the head is finally opening up a bit. Penalosa really just not doing anything, and Juanma is slowing down a bit with 30 seconds to go. Juanma has to have thrown over 100 power shots this round. Penalosa throwing a few punches back, but Juanma dominates every exchange. Huge huge round for Lopez.

Round 7
Juanma slows down a bit to start this one. He threw 133 punches last round, and Juanma seems to be taking the first 30 or so seconds off of this round. Penalosa back to defensive posturing near a corner in this phone booth of a ring. Lopez coming forward now, and landing showt both to the body and the head. Lopez is still throwing a lot, but his accuracy is astounding, considering what a good defensive fighter Penalosa is.
Penalosa finally comes back, and hits Juanma with a nice three punch combo. Juanma looking a little more tired, but still throwing some punches. Juanma has him in the corner, and Penalosa comes back with a really nice counter combo. Juanma was the much more active puncher that round, but Penalosa actually probably landed the better shots for the first time that round. Close round, but I’m giving it to Gerry.

Round 8
Juanma back to coming forward, and just PUNISHING the body. Over and over, mixing up his punches, and throwing the occasional head shot just to keep Penalosa’s hands up, but he’s doing a lot. Juanma has him against the ropes and throws a huge flurry, landing a ton of it, but Penalosa gets him with a nice counter. Juanma with a big left hook that snaps Penalosa’s head back, and Gerry’s up against the ropes again with Juanma throwing a ton of punches, and Penalosa occasionally countering.
If I were the ref, I’d consider stopping this thing already. It’s shades of Mancini-Kim. Lopez is delivering Penalosa the beating of his life, but the fight won’t get stopped because Penalosa is occasionally landing the hard counter. Another huge round for Lopez, after basically taking off round 7. Lamps says Lopez set a compubox record that round for a SBW.

Round 9
Roach threatening to stop the fight soon. Lopez looks like he’s taking this round off a bit as well, or at least he’s not quite as active. Penalosa is now the most active he’s been the whole fight. Penalosa back up against the ropes, but Juanma isn’t pouring it on quite as much as he has been in previous rounds. Penalosa throwing a lot in response, but not really landing much, and Lopez is still digging nice to the body. Lopez with a huge three punch combo to the head and SOMEHOW he’s still standing. Penalosa hears the 10 second whistle and tries to throw a flurry, but no matter what he does, it just isn’t having an effect on Lopez.
Freddie Roach is stopping the fight.
