Given the facts, Who will be training Miguel Cotto? (Poll Included)

234x246_medium

I wanted to do this to see what the boxing community in BLH would suggest as a perfect selection for the rest of Miguel Cotto's training. Below are my suggestions. Feel free to add any others you think might also work for Miguel. The are some that are pretty busy at the moment, like Mayweather Sr. and the Roach, but there are some that are pretty free at the moment or not so much. My selection as previously stated was Naz Richardson. Manny Steward would make another great one. I don't know about anyone else, but B-Hop would make an excellent trainer. I also added himself as a trainer because if you noticed his training preparation for Antonio Margarito, Miguel was pretty much training himself at times.

This should have obviously been done over three years ago by Miguel; however, he continued his training with his uncle which ultimately ended in a disfunctional situation.

[Note by Brickhaus, 04/09/09 3:13 PM EDT ] Added to the front page.  Another item that's come to light is that Cotto wanted to train in Florida, so the willingness of a trainer to go there for camp might be a factor as well.  Bob Arum has intimated that he's trying to get Emmanuel Steward, who I personally think would be a horrible choice considering the types of fighters he's been successful with.  I've added a few poll options as well.

Won’t Manny be busy with Wlad for June 20 in Germany?

Steward's never been one to turn down work

And he often trains for more than one big fight at a time. More than once I can remember him not being in a fighter’s corner on fight night because he was at another fight training someone. However, that does probably mean that Cotto would need to head up to the Poconos to train, and I’m not sure he’d want to do that.

Just FYI

Alex Caraballo is Juan Manuel Lopez’s trainer, and Jose Sanchez is Ivan Calderon’s trainer.

My vote goes to Manny Siaca Sr., who I think fits well with Cotto’s style, and who is one of the best trainers in Puerto Rico.

BTW

For those who don’t know him, Siaca trained Leo Gamez, Edwin Rosario, Eddie Muhammad Mustafa, Sammy Serrano, etc. All told, he’s trained 23 beltholders.

You make a strong case. I had already voted for Naz, but I see your point. Siaca would be a solid, safe pick.

That

And his strengths are with getting aggressive boxer-punchers to mix up their attack and move well. Seems to fit Cotto to a tee.

hmmm.

You’d think SSM would want to keep Nazeem to himself, especially since he might meet Cotto again down the road. Manny got mad when Freddie took time out for Oscar, plus he just agreed to train Margarito and help with his appeal. Not an easy fix for Cotto.
Maybe Seward, but he is slowing down in recent years.
I could see see him and Evangelista making nice, at least for this fight.

However, I would like to see Cotto work with another trainer.

"plus he just agreed to train Margarito and help with his appeal. "

Who does this refer to?
Going on context, it could refer to any one of 6 people…..

I’m curious.

well

it’s part of the sentence with Freddie, so Roach. I guess Margo hopes that Freddie’s reputation will help him with his appeal.

nice photo choice.

I think Paulie Gualtieri should train him.

Joe Goosen

I know he’s based on the west coast but Goosen would be a good choice, he worked well with Corrales and Mosely in the past.

Goosen

I have been championing goosen on the British Boxrec forum for some time. I think he is an excellent trainer. I wish Ricky Hatton had teamed up with him
