Adamek-Godfrey likely for July 10
When HBO passed on a fight between cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek and light heavyweight contender Glen Johnson, the hope was that Showtime or someone could rescue that bout. Turns out, according to Dan Rafael, that Showtime just doesn't have the money in its budget to make that bout.
With Adamek scheduled to return on July 10 at Newark's Prudential Center, which has become his fighting home, it looks now like his opponent will be 28-year old American Matt Godfrey. Adamek says he's 99% sure Godfrey will be his opponent. The fight will likely end up on one of those "special" Shobox broadcasts, the night before Vic Darchinyan's fight with Joseph Agbeko on Showtime.
Godfrey, from Providence, has fought most of his career in the northeast, but did venture over to Germany to face Rudolf Kraj last year. Kraj beat Godfrey via unanimous decision (115-113, 116-113, 117-111) in a WBC eliminator. Godfrey has a career mark of 18-1 with 10 knockouts.
It's not to blast Godfrey as a bad opponent, because he's not, but he's not a really good one, either. He's roughly the same level of opponent that Johnathon Banks was for Adamek -- decent resume, American, good record, and Adamek should be the very heavy favorite. It's not Adamek-Hopkins or Adamek-Johnson, let's put it that way.
For anyone wondering, Steve Cunningham is still without a fight on the docket.

Cunningham should see if Chad Dawson has any interest. I’d like to see that fight. Adamek beats Cunningham, Dawson beat Adamek, Dawson probably beats Cunningham but I’d throw $25 to see it.

WEC draws way better ratings than their boxing, I think.

I believe it. Sad, but I believe it.

I actually like WEC a lot, but it is sad given that WEC is basically promoted word-of-mouth between MMA fans. Versus is horrible about promoting their shows. Which again goes with the fact that they have no money.

I like Frank Mir commentating, but I’d rather have nightly access to boxing. I watch the shit partly because I’ll watch anything at 2am, but…

Vs has maybe less than a million dollars for a budget when it comes to fighting.
I remember that DanR said that they only paid $100,000 for the Adamek fight. They also paid 60,000 for Hattons fight vs Locano.
What is hurting them is that they have a mulimillion dollar deal with NHL and they aren’t getting any ratings.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

At this point, is it okay to give up the fiction that hockey is one of the major sports in the US? I don’t care about my local MLS team, can I not give a crap about the Lightning either?
