Caballero barely retains against Mathebula
FanPost promoted by SC. I haven't seen this fight yet. Mark Vester of BoxingScene gives much the same account as that given by Sickle. Sounds like a fight worth tracking down.
Just finished watching the fight between Mathebula and Caballero and I must say it was a great fight. Not only that, but the undercards were also great. It was an outstanding show.
However, Celestino Caballero was not in the ring. For the first four rounds he impressively dominated the underdog; after that, it went downhill. For those four rounds Caballero drained himself and struggled from then on. Jeffrey Mathebula began to press and even dominate the rest of the fight. Caballero was knocked down near the end of the 8th or 9th round and the ref called it a slip. The scores were read:
112-116 Caballero
112-116 Mathebula
112-116 Caballero
My scorecard (and also a friend of mine's) was 112-116 for Mathebula. So again we have a case were the fight should had gone towards the fighter than won rather than the one that didn't. What struck me the most, was that even the Panamanian announcers saw Caballero losing this fight.
On a side note a proposed fight between Caballero and Lopez has apparently gone by the wayside because of economic issues. Even if the fight was to happen, I truly believe Caballero would find his hands full fighting against Juanma Lopez. He probably wouldn't even make it past the sixth round. Better yet, I keep reading that he plans to go after Yuriorkis Gamboa. Gamboa's chin is not the best in the world, but Lord is he fast. And quite frankly, I still do not see Caballero beating him, but do think that one would make it to the cards.

Did he look lethargic? I mean how many more fights can he boil down to make 122?

No
He looked pretty good. He was strong for the first four rounds; however, Mathebula held his own at times. I think he was just looking for the KO because he threw many desperate punches. Then he was gassed out after the fourth round. Most of the undercards were over due to late stoppage, so it could have been that he wanted to give the fans a KO finisher. But that’s highly doubtful.

So did CC just gas or could Mathebula (another freak of nature) be a legit contender?

After the fight, I heard that Caballero still had a huge reach advantage

Both, but Caballero was more gassed. I wouldn’t entirely consider Mathebula a legit contender, but he can clearly give a lot of people problems in the ring. That’s one fighter to perhaps watch out for. Mathebula stated that he trained for the fight for over 4 months, so he was pretty much taking it serious. If I am not mistaken, I think Mathebula was bumped up above Johnny Gonzalez in the world rating to number 4. Behind Molitor… but I may be rusty on that part. Unsure. Again for four rounds, Caballero gave him a lot of powershots but seemed like they were no damage at all at times. Mathebula was staggered; yes, but nothing to run over the hills for.
