Anybody got an idea what time Pac and Hitman square off tonight? I’m working a 24 hour shift and have to “borrow” the fight through means I wouldn’t normally use. Just wondering what time I should start desperately searching at.

I can attest to this

I was there for Hatton/Mayweather. I was woken up every morning for 4 days to the singing Brits. I dutifully hurried through a shower, got some vodka & sprite from the little shop downstairs, and joined my adopted friends for boozing and singing.

In case anyone missed it

Try to track down a copy of Carlos Abregu vs Irving Garcia from last night’s Shobox. Definite fight of the month candidate, and possible round of the year candidate.

Yeah that was nuts. I was actually supposed to go to that because I only live about 1:15 from Chumash but I decided not to because I had something I had to do last night. I DVR’d it and watched it this morning. That was pretty damn impressive by both men. No shame in losing that fight at all.

I was talking to my buddy about this fight...

I think if JMM comes out with the intention of absolutely stinking the joint out he has a chance of winning a narrow decision. When was the last time Floyd was the aggressor against a masterful counterpuncher? Never. I mean obviously JMM is gonna get blown out of he goes on the offensive against Floyd’s counterpunching so why not give it a shot and just absolutely stink the joint out. Floyd needs an impressive performance to bolster his forthcoming big-money PPV fight more than JMM does and maybe he can bait him out with that.

Gimme 1 round!

Not in Marquez’s blood. But then I never thought I’d see Barrera fighting merely to last 12 rounds like he did against Manny in their rematch.

by Scott Christ on May 2, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably not

But honestly I’d like to see him try it. When Floyd realizes JMM’s stolen a couple rounds and that he’s in a true fight for a decision I’d like to see what it does to him especially with him having to be the aggressor.

by jsims2 on May 2, 2009 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

I still think Marquez will be competitive in this fight

He may have slowed down a little bit, and Floyd looks like he’s in good shape, but let’s not forget that Marquez is one of the most intelligent boxers out there. I may be wrong but I think he knows it too that he can’t fight aggressively against Floyd and he will probably adapt to Floyd’s style. Whether he can beat Floyd I don’t know, but I think he will be competitive.

by Strategos on May 2, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure about this

Hatton is tailor-made for Floyd’s countering. Marquez is a pretty good counter-puncher himself.

by Strategos on May 2, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Marquez also looked a bit fat at 135

And doesn’t have the world’s greatest chin, and frankly he’s not as good at avoiding and countering as he used to be – now usually he counters after he gets hit.

by Brickhaus on May 2, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

by boxingstudent on May 2, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright, I need some second and third opinions

Debating about whether to get the PPV or watch the fight out. Three options:

1) Home
Pros:
- Best seat in the house
- Can go to town on here during the fight
- Probably winds up cheapest if I don’t pre-game

Cons:
- Nobody to go crazy with during the fight
- Just seems a bit boring
- $50 to buy PPV vs $20 for an admission

2) Sports bar
Pros:
- the one I would go to serves BBQ
- Lots of hardcore fight fans
- Not much more expensive than buying the PPV

Cons:
- Out at a restaurant/bar by myself
- If I can’t get a seat, standing for 4 hours
- Probably will be super crowded
- That place is owned by Justin Timberlake (I don’t think I want to support his restaurant habit)

3) Strip club:
Pros:
- Can go out alone and don’t seem too out of place
- Uh, titties in face

Cons:
- Crowd probably won’t be as into the fights, especially the undercard
- Tipping strippers is expensive
- Drinks at strip clubs are super expensive
- It’s NYC, so you still can’t get a real lap dance (although I guess that makes things cheaper)

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on May 2, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well the original strain in Mexico had a 7% fatality rate

The flu was too strong for its own good though. It would kill the host before it could infect other people so science’s best guess is that it evolved to have a decreased it virility while increasing its transmission rate.

Just for the record the average flu fatality rate is .01%

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 2, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

That's only because it's a new strain and people didn't know what it was

Once you treat it like the regular flu, it doesn’t seem to have that high of a mortality rate. It doesn’t attack the respiratory system and shut things down like Avian flu, which actually is dangerous.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on May 2, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats the thing

The original strain was way way stronger. Nobody is sure why. The best explanation I found was that it quickly mutated to propagate itself and lost the vast majority of its virility.

Avian flu is definitely a much more “real” threat compared to what this became. Avian flu is like 20% fatal. But, what makes it interesting is we’re not seeing the same thing as they saw in the first generation or 2 of cases in Mexico. So this has become a “what if it hadn’t changed” case.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 2, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

And the reason it could be that deadly

Is that for a while (and it might still be doing this) it was killing people with a hyper stimulated immune response. Your body kills you by trying to fight it off and you drown in your own fluids. Thats what the 1918 flu did.

This is treatable with Tamiflu and has decreased its deadly nature already though. I think its good to see how fast the response is to a potential pandemic though.

Time Warner here

Getting it in HD.

It really depends on the locale though. A lot of metro areas, especially those that aren’t densely packed, don’t have enough fiber optic cable laid down to have tons of HD channels, and the cable companies need to pick and choose what they can run in HD at any given point since it takes up so much more capacity than regular.

Lara starts the second round giving Gray some looks. He’s hitting Gray with some lefts. Gray is doing nothing. This is sparring — bad sparring. Now Lara’s landing at will, really. I’ll be honest: Love Lara, this is a joke. Gray is not here to fight.

Lara pulls on his shorts a lot. Kinda weird.

Lara is dominating, partly because Gray isn’t doing anything. I’m not giving Gray the 9 this round — he doesn’t deserve it.

Jesus, now Manny’s saying that he’d be glad Kelly Pavlik is “finishing up his career” if he was managing his career because of the up-and-coming guys. Manny’s losing all credit.

Bartinelli lost his mouthguard with about 20 seconds left. He’s getting drilled in there. He’s landed one punch. These fights are utterly worthless. They could’ve put Mike Alvarado on.

Povetkin was knocking everyone out when he was fighting cans too. Possibly, but Korobov has been fighting guys with sketchy chins. That tells me that Bob Arum thinks he doesn’t have KO power against guys with solid chins.

Korobov DRILLS Martinelli just under a minute into the round, and he’s down. Bartinelli responds to “you wanna go?” with “hell yeah.”

OK, dude.

Walker throwing. I’m very into the fact that he seems prepared to be in there and that he wants to win after watching Bartinelli and especially Gray in the first two fights.

Walker throwing some left hooks in the clinch, and then some outside of it. Left to the body by Jacobs. And another. He’s throwing good shots to the ribs. That’s some savvy, even for a young guy. Jacobs goes southpaw. 29-6 landed advantage for DJ this round.

Walker with a roundhouse right, Jacobs doesn’t budge. He’s holding and hitting. Walker just THROWS Jacobs to the ground. That was a ferocious throw. That was near bad judo level. And it was flagrant. And it was bullshit.

Jacobs takes a moment in his corner. That was crap from Walker. They have to fix his cup and for some reason HBO is giving us a close-up.

Jacobs-Walker R4

I like what Walker’s done past his weird rough-housing. Jacobs, though, is far more skilled, and lands a nice combo finishing with a body shot at about 1:20. I think Jacobs might’ve made a mistake taking this fight on SUCH short notice. Walker DRILLED near the end of the round — he dances.

I’m saving my good RBR for the main, for the record. I know this isn’t great, but I have a hard time being psyched so far.

What’s weird and bothers me (to a very mild degree) is Jacobs doesn’t seem to be using his massive height advantage (6’1" to 5’7") to the degree he could be.

He is pretty easily winning this fight. Little firefight breaks out at 2:30, won by Jacobs because he got out of it nicely. Good skills. That’s what skills do. Walker is tough, though — kind of a dick, but hey, so’s Hatton.

Jacobs throwing almost 100 punches a round so far

Nice workrate there. Most of his punches to the head have been kind of pitty patty this fight though. He’s sat on his shots to the body, but it looks like Jacobs isn’t trying to score a KO, or at least is waiting until later in the fight to try.

Crowd’s filling up. Jacobs is winning this without much trouble — pretty predictable. Walker at least came to fight (again). I feel that’s worth repeating given Gray’s alleged performance.

Walker GUNNING with about 30 seconds out. He’s just too short. Jacobs can lean and avoid. Good defense at the end of the round by DJ.

Down goes Gaudet on a left hook about 30 seconds in. Well…there’s that.

Gaudet trying to jab around Soto, upstairs and to the body. Soto laying back and looking for his chances. Kind of a half-and-half round, knockdown was huge.

Gaudet looking better this round than the first. The knockdown might’ve been more balance, like Manny said. he was caught flash but hit square, too.

Soto’s technical skills are “eh” — if Gaudet can beat him, it’s in that fight. Left hook by Soto. Long rights from Soto send Gaudet retreating. Gaudet trying to match hand speed in flurries, but not power. Soto round.

Hurrld gave the last to Gaudet.

BIG right by Soto staggers Gaudet. Lampley thinks Soto doesn’t really know what to do — what’s sad is that might be right, but he’s still winning this fairly handily IMO.

Soto with a mouse under his right eye. I’m starting to come around on what Gaudet’s doing. But Soto hits him with another hard right. The big punches are Soto. The pace IS Gaudet’s. Soto coming in and throwing. Gaudet slips a lot of it. Two hard rights by Soto. Left hook Gaudet.

Soto round by big shots. He looks a bit lost at times, but I still don’t think he’s losing anything.

Gaudet is landing some square shots but he just has no power.

I’m gonna say this even though I know I’m not analyzing much: Soto’s a production.

Soto-Gaudet R8

I think I have a bias. Guys like Gaudet, or Malignaggi, that can’t hurt a tough guy across from them, I tend to score heavily against. It’s a dick thing to say, and I could phrase it better, but whatever: They can’t get an opponent to respect them, i have a hard time “respecting” them on my card.

That said I’m a Winky Wright fan. Different thing. I like watching Mayweather fight. Different thing.

Humberto Soto I called a product earlier. I mean it. This fight has been dull, and Gaudet has taken some of Soto’s best stuff — including a BIG right hand there — and Soto can’t really dent him much.

The is a HUGE statement to the Pretty One. I thought Pacquaio was gonna KO Hatton two rounds earlier than Floyd did. This was on a WHOLE other level entirely. Styles make fights, but Floyd would have real reason to be concerned

Do you think Pac is faster then Floyd?

This is a real question. It has to be pretty even with a slight edge to Pac.

Also what do you think Floyd is thinking now. He has a guy that arguably won one or both of his fights against Pac. Floyd better come out of his defensive self and dominate Marquez if he wants to reclaim the P4P championship.

I couldn’t have been more wrong on this fight. I thought Pac only chance to win was to box him and out speed him. How were any of the lighter weight fighters able to stay up right a whole fight. I have doubts that Floyd or Cotto could beat him. They both would make better fights though.

by Strategos on May 3, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

He showed improvement against Malignaggi

I think most of it was smokescreen for Pac though. Both of them knew Hatton’s best chance was to smother him, but they were telling everyone he would box so Pac might not be expecting it as much.

by Strategos on May 3, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Who should Manny fight now?

Mosley, Cotto…Williams? I don’t think Mayweather (as good as he is) will fight any of them, so perhaps Manny should just go ahead and start (or try to) clearing up the welterweight division..

by Strategos on May 3, 2009 12:39 AM EDT reply actions

Mayweather if he beats Marquez. Period. If Marquez beats Mayweather, Marquez. Period.

Period! Period!

I’d love to see him against Mosley as a fight fan.

by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

You don’t see Arum setting up a fight with Cotto if Miguel beats Clottey?

by Nick_ on May 3, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Not if Floyd wins big. Floyd-Manny is WAY bigger than Manny-Cotto.

by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Except that Arum could keep 100% of the proceeds from Manny-Cotto

I think it would be a much more compelling fight as well.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on May 3, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but if he can make Floyd-Manny he won’t pass it. Manny-Cotto is always there.

by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess what I was trying to say is that I am not sure if Mayweather will fight Pacman either (in addition to the other 3). Mayweather was and probably still is an exceptional boxer, but I think everybody should agree that he clearly didn’t clear-up welterweight. He fights guys he can beat easily (or relatively)

by Strategos on May 3, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

He did and he was

But so were Cotto, Margarito, and Williams…and Mosley. I am not saying he should have fought them, it’s a free world. But to be the best you have to fight with the best..and beat them

by Strategos on May 3, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

If Mayweather comes back hard against JMM, I’m not putting him over Manny at P4P. He has to beat Manny now.

by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

No question. Rolling over a blown-up JMM doesn’t make Floyd look anywhere near as impressive as Manny does now. That said, I really, really hope JMM is able to carry the weight OK and make a fight of it.

by Nick_ on May 3, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions
