There’s only one Ricky Hatton,
One Ricky Hatton,
Walking along,
Singing a song,
Walking in a Hatton wonderland.
Go, Ricky, go! However it turns out tonight, I think it’s going to be a fantastic fight.

Anybody got an idea what time Pac and Hitman square off tonight? I’m working a 24 hour shift and have to “borrow” the fight through means I wouldn’t normally use. Just wondering what time I should start desperately searching at.

I can attest to this
I was there for Hatton/Mayweather. I was woken up every morning for 4 days to the singing Brits. I dutifully hurried through a shower, got some vodka & sprite from the little shop downstairs, and joined my adopted friends for boozing and singing.

In case anyone missed it
Try to track down a copy of Carlos Abregu vs Irving Garcia from last night’s Shobox. Definite fight of the month candidate, and possible round of the year candidate.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Yeah that was nuts. I was actually supposed to go to that because I only live about 1:15 from Chumash but I decided not to because I had something I had to do last night. I DVR’d it and watched it this morning. That was pretty damn impressive by both men. No shame in losing that fight at all.

But let me know if anyone in NYC is interested in watching here (I live by Union Square station). GF is out of town, but none of my ‘real life’ friends are interested in boxing. 44" HD…

But I have been sick as a dog since Wednesday. I don’t think its the bacon flu, but I am a damn mess regardless.
It stinks since Ice and I were planning to go trolling over in Carnarsie for a good pinoy bar to watch the fight at. I was really looking forward to that all month.

I was talking to my buddy about this fight...
I think if JMM comes out with the intention of absolutely stinking the joint out he has a chance of winning a narrow decision. When was the last time Floyd was the aggressor against a masterful counterpuncher? Never. I mean obviously JMM is gonna get blown out of he goes on the offensive against Floyd’s counterpunching so why not give it a shot and just absolutely stink the joint out. Floyd needs an impressive performance to bolster his forthcoming big-money PPV fight more than JMM does and maybe he can bait him out with that.

Not in Marquez’s blood. But then I never thought I’d see Barrera fighting merely to last 12 rounds like he did against Manny in their rematch.
Probably not
But honestly I’d like to see him try it. When Floyd realizes JMM’s stolen a couple rounds and that he’s in a true fight for a decision I’d like to see what it does to him especially with him having to be the aggressor.
Gimme 1 round!

I still think Marquez will be competitive in this fight
He may have slowed down a little bit, and Floyd looks like he’s in good shape, but let’s not forget that Marquez is one of the most intelligent boxers out there. I may be wrong but I think he knows it too that he can’t fight aggressively against Floyd and he will probably adapt to Floyd’s style. Whether he can beat Floyd I don’t know, but I think he will be competitive.
Not sure about this
Hatton is tailor-made for Floyd’s countering. Marquez is a pretty good counter-puncher himself.
Marquez also looked a bit fat at 135
And doesn’t have the world’s greatest chin, and frankly he’s not as good at avoiding and countering as he used to be – now usually he counters after he gets hit.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
He's slowed down
I agree. I still think his ring intelligence still makes him competitive against anybody (within limits!)
Tune up for who though
I just don’t see what Floyd is going to do after JMM. I don’t think he’ll get in there with Cotto,Mosley or the freakish Paul Williams but I do believe he will challenge the smaller Pac-man possibly. We will just have to wait
Alright, I need some second and third opinions
Debating about whether to get the PPV or watch the fight out. Three options:
1) Home
Pros:
- Best seat in the house
- Can go to town on here during the fight
- Probably winds up cheapest if I don’t pre-game
Cons:
- Nobody to go crazy with during the fight
- Just seems a bit boring
- $50 to buy PPV vs $20 for an admission
2) Sports bar
Pros:
- the one I would go to serves BBQ
- Lots of hardcore fight fans
- Not much more expensive than buying the PPV
Cons:
- Out at a restaurant/bar by myself
- If I can’t get a seat, standing for 4 hours
- Probably will be super crowded
- That place is owned by Justin Timberlake (I don’t think I want to support his restaurant habit)
3) Strip club:
Pros:
- Can go out alone and don’t seem too out of place
- Uh, titties in face
Cons:
- Crowd probably won’t be as into the fights, especially the undercard
- Tipping strippers is expensive
- Drinks at strip clubs are super expensive
- It’s NYC, so you still can’t get a real lap dance (although I guess that makes things cheaper)

Swine Flu is an issue
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Speaking of Swine Flu
I go to school in San Antone, exams this week and last. So, we get this idea we’re gonna go to a buddies’ ranch, slaughter a pig and leave it in the school parking lot. I’m in, I got the pick-up and he’s got the ranch with pigs and a rifle. And…then he pulls out. I was ready to cause some mayhem though. I can talk about it now that we’ve abandoned intent
Honestly thats in the top 5 of pranks I've heard of.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Whatever
I don’t get what all the fuss is about. Sure, the flu sucks, but it’s just a different strain of flu.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Well the original strain in Mexico had a 7% fatality rate
The flu was too strong for its own good though. It would kill the host before it could infect other people so science’s best guess is that it evolved to have a decreased it virility while increasing its transmission rate.
Just for the record the average flu fatality rate is .01%
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 2, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions
That's only because it's a new strain and people didn't know what it was
Once you treat it like the regular flu, it doesn’t seem to have that high of a mortality rate. It doesn’t attack the respiratory system and shut things down like Avian flu, which actually is dangerous.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Thats the thing
The original strain was way way stronger. Nobody is sure why. The best explanation I found was that it quickly mutated to propagate itself and lost the vast majority of its virility.
Avian flu is definitely a much more “real” threat compared to what this became. Avian flu is like 20% fatal. But, what makes it interesting is we’re not seeing the same thing as they saw in the first generation or 2 of cases in Mexico. So this has become a “what if it hadn’t changed” case.

by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 2, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions
And the reason it could be that deadly
Is that for a while (and it might still be doing this) it was killing people with a hyper stimulated immune response. Your body kills you by trying to fight it off and you drown in your own fluids. Thats what the 1918 flu did.
This is treatable with Tamiflu and has decreased its deadly nature already though. I think its good to see how fast the response is to a potential pandemic though.

Though it’s definitely Greek-American food, with some Cuban influence. Spanish, Italian, Greek and Cuban food in Tampa are literally unique to Tampa, can’t really get it the same way anywhere else. My girlfriend was horrified when I took her to get a Cuban sandwich in Tampa.

I only caught the last round, but the announcers indicated it was a close fight. Gallardo was KDed in the second. It was someone Alvarado should have been able to knock out. Time Warner here
Getting it in HD.
It really depends on the locale though. A lot of metro areas, especially those that aren’t densely packed, don’t have enough fiber optic cable laid down to have tons of HD channels, and the cable companies need to pick and choose what they can run in HD at any given point since it takes up so much more capacity than regular.

I really really wish they had found something else
instead of moving the Lara and Korobov fights to the main card. Korobov isn’t particularly exciting as a fighter even, and both fights are really designed to end with a KO1.

Pretty much
Big Lara fan. Frankly, I like almost all of the Cubans who have recently defected.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
All of their footwork suck though
Probably something about the coaching there. They all hold their feet way way too far apart.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Yeah, easier to score in the amateurs that way
But it also means you’re more prone to knockdowns. Doesn’t matter in the amateurs, since knockdowns don’t really mean anything in the amateurs, but they’re a big deal in the pro sport.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
From what I hear theyre pushing Lara really fast, he might fight for a title next year if his handlers have their way
Too much time hanging out with MMa fighters :P

Keep firing Assholes!
Akiyama is the Japanese word for Sexify.
Lara-Gray R1
Lara hanging back in the opening moments, couple body shots, couple jab flicks. Slower start than usual for Lara. He’s really stayed way back this opening round. There’s a minute left and no one’s landed a meaningful shot. Gray isn’t trying to make this happen, either.
Left by Lara. Two more lefts. Gray has landed two shots this round according to HBO, to about 19 by Lara.
Lara 10-9
Gray's obviously trying to survive 4 rounds
Not engaging at all, not leaving any openings.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Lara needs to quit pulling on his shorts
He almost got caught last time he did
Vogt early, Vogt often.
See Ya Guys
I’m Off To The Local Sports Bar With The Sexy Waitresses
Nice thing about Lara too
is that he’s much younger than most of the other Cuban defectors.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Lara-Gray R2
Lara starts the second round giving Gray some looks. He’s hitting Gray with some lefts. Gray is doing nothing. This is sparring — bad sparring. Now Lara’s landing at will, really. I’ll be honest: Love Lara, this is a joke. Gray is not here to fight.
Lara pulls on his shorts a lot. Kinda weird.
Lara is dominating, partly because Gray isn’t doing anything. I’m not giving Gray the 9 this round — he doesn’t deserve it.
Lara 10-8 w/o knockdown
Lara 20-17
Why do some fighters feel the need to keep readjusting their trunks? If their pants fall down, the referee will call a halt during a lull in the action, right?
Never seen it happen
But presumably they would. He’s pulling his shorts DOWN though.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Is that Lemmy sitting next to Michal Buffer?
I know it’s not really, but I want his facial hair.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Lara-Gray R3
Steward says Lara could give Pavlik problems. Steward’s anti-Pavlik boner is MF’ing astounding. It’s really crazy. He hates Pavlik.
This fight has been insanely easy for Lara. He’s landing his left here and there and Gray does not care about anything but cashing a check. This is a crap fight — not because of Lara, a fighter worth paying attention to. Gray’s a bum tonight.
Lara 10-9
Lara 30-26
Lara 10-9

Lara could probably fight again tomorrow
he’s getting hit so little. I’ve seen Gray land maybe one good clean shot all fight. If I’m in Gray’s corner, I tell him to throw like hell, or he’s never going to get another decent payday again. He’s being too boring and defensive for an opponent.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Lara-Gray R4
Same as the first three rounds through the first half of it.
Pretty much the same the second half. I’m not going to lie on these undercard fights. This was a bad showcase.
Lara 10-8
Lara 40-34
Easiest fight Lara will ever have.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Probbaly more due to his length to be fair.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Well, it looks like he has the goods too, to be honest. The length with good boxing skills could give a smaller man trouble. He needs someone with a pulse next time.
Still buildin g up stamina
But in terms of skill, he’s up there with anyone at 154.

Korobov-Bartinelli R1
Korobov mixes his punches nicely. I hate trying to RBR these fights — we’re more scouting the fave than anything else.
Jesus, now Manny’s saying that he’d be glad Kelly Pavlik is “finishing up his career” if he was managing his career because of the up-and-coming guys. Manny’s losing all credit.
Bartinelli lost his mouthguard with about 20 seconds left. He’s getting drilled in there. He’s landed one punch. These fights are utterly worthless. They could’ve put Mike Alvarado on.

Povetkin was knocking everyone out when he was fighting cans too. Possibly, but Korobov has been fighting guys with sketchy chins. That tells me that Bob Arum thinks he doesn’t have KO power against guys with solid chins.

Korobov-Bartinelli R2
Korobov DRILLS Martinelli just under a minute into the round, and he’s down. Bartinelli responds to “you wanna go?” with “hell yeah.”
OK, dude.
Four punch combo from Korobov. Referee stops it a few moments later.
Matt Korobov TKO-2
Manny has a real hard on for Korobov
Sure, he punches hard and is technically sound, but he’s pretty slow, and he has yet to be tested. I’m not nearly as excited about Korobov long-term as Lara.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Manny has a hard-on for anyone in or near the 160 pound division that isn’t Kelly Pavlik. His anti-Pavlik hard-on tonight is embarrassing.
He desperately wanted to train him, and got snubbed.
I actually thought it was a good idea, and still do.

Jacobs-Walker R2
Walker throwing. I’m very into the fact that he seems prepared to be in there and that he wants to win after watching Bartinelli and especially Gray in the first two fights.
Walker throwing some left hooks in the clinch, and then some outside of it. Left to the body by Jacobs. And another. He’s throwing good shots to the ribs. That’s some savvy, even for a young guy. Jacobs goes southpaw. 29-6 landed advantage for DJ this round.

Walker with a roundhouse right, Jacobs doesn’t budge. He’s holding and hitting. Walker just THROWS Jacobs to the ground. That was a ferocious throw. That was near bad judo level. And it was flagrant. And it was bullshit.
Jacobs takes a moment in his corner. That was crap from Walker. They have to fix his cup and for some reason HBO is giving us a close-up.
Walker comes back into the fight pressing and throwing. Good idea. I’m giving Jacobs this round even though it got broken up with a throw.
Jacobs 10-9

I like what Walker’s done past his weird rough-housing. Jacobs, though, is far more skilled, and lands a nice combo finishing with a body shot at about 1:20. I think Jacobs might’ve made a mistake taking this fight on SUCH short notice. Walker DRILLED near the end of the round — he dances.
I’m saving my good RBR for the main, for the record. I know this isn’t great, but I have a hard time being psyched so far.

Jacobs-Walker R5
What’s weird and bothers me (to a very mild degree) is Jacobs doesn’t seem to be using his massive height advantage (6’1" to 5’7") to the degree he could be.
He is pretty easily winning this fight. Little firefight breaks out at 2:30, won by Jacobs because he got out of it nicely. Good skills. That’s what skills do. Walker is tough, though — kind of a dick, but hey, so’s Hatton.

Jacobs 80-72

Gaudit's already been knocked down? Jesus
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Soto-Gaudet R1
Down goes Gaudet on a left hook about 30 seconds in. Well…there’s that.
Gaudet trying to jab around Soto, upstairs and to the body. Soto laying back and looking for his chances. Kind of a half-and-half round, knockdown was huge.
Soto 10-8
Soto-Gaudet R2
Gaudet looking better this round than the first. The knockdown might’ve been more balance, like Manny said. he was caught flash but hit square, too.
Soto’s technical skills are “eh” — if Gaudet can beat him, it’s in that fight. Left hook by Soto. Long rights from Soto send Gaudet retreating. Gaudet trying to match hand speed in flurries, but not power. Soto round.
Soto 10-9
Soto 20-18

Soto-Gaudet R3
Soto kind of chasing Gaudet now. Kind of a fugly fight considering Gaudet is just looking for shots he’s not landing. Soto even looks comparable technically against a guy with a nice amateur background. Gaudet pushes a little more in the last minute, which as Manny says might due to Soto making him do that.
Soto 10-9
Soto 30-26
Of course not
He had trouble outboxing Collazo, how’s he going to outbox a stronger, quicker, more technically sound southpaw. He could still knock him out though.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Soto-Gaudet R4
Gaudet hurt on a body combo and a head shot left hook, bouncing off the ropes and then he resets when Soto charges. Overhand right misses.
Soto is so much stronger than Gaudet that it’s not funny.
Soto 10-9
Soto 40-35

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Soto-Gaudet R5
Hurrld gave the last to Gaudet.
BIG right by Soto staggers Gaudet. Lampley thinks Soto doesn’t really know what to do — what’s sad is that might be right, but he’s still winning this fairly handily IMO.
Soto with a mouse under his right eye. I’m starting to come around on what Gaudet’s doing. But Soto hits him with another hard right. The big punches are Soto. The pace IS Gaudet’s. Soto coming in and throwing. Gaudet slips a lot of it. Two hard rights by Soto. Left hook Gaudet.
Soto round by big shots. He looks a bit lost at times, but I still don’t think he’s losing anything.
Soto 10-9

Soto 10-9
Soto 79-73
Soto-Gaudet R8
I think I have a bias. Guys like Gaudet, or Malignaggi, that can’t hurt a tough guy across from them, I tend to score heavily against. It’s a dick thing to say, and I could phrase it better, but whatever: They can’t get an opponent to respect them, i have a hard time “respecting” them on my card.
That said I’m a Winky Wright fan. Different thing. I like watching Mayweather fight. Different thing.

This is a real question. It has to be pretty even with a slight edge to Pac.
Also what do you think Floyd is thinking now. He has a guy that arguably won one or both of his fights against Pac. Floyd better come out of his defensive self and dominate Marquez if he wants to reclaim the P4P championship.
I think he might be. He’s unbelievable. We as boxing fans are seeing someone who belongs in the ATG discussion now. People might think that’s hyperbole, but it’s really not. I stand by it. He just obliterated a great fighter.

We went there earlier
Um I think I feel vindicated. Good call SC ^5

Wow
I couldn’t have been more wrong on this fight. I thought Pac only chance to win was to box him and out speed him. How were any of the lighter weight fighters able to stay up right a whole fight. I have doubts that Floyd or Cotto could beat him. They both would make better fights though.
Roach vs. Jackson fighters
Would love to see who’s best in overall striking.

Not Manny per say.
But Roach trained fighters vs. Jackson trained fighters.

well
Roach doesn’t really have a LOT of great fighters.

Er, Carwin Vs. Andrei
Sorry
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
I would carwin would get a takedown, Andrei sweeps, and then he GnPs or something.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Carwin/Jardine
Dan Hardy would face GSP

When you get Silva vs GSP
you’ll get the answer. GSP won’t swing with Silva. Even if I think Silva’s hands are highly overrated.
Gimme 1 round!

That willl just be GSP wrestling the hell out of Silva.

How crazy are they going in the Phillipines?
Keep firing Assholes!
Akiyama is the Japanese word for Sexify.
But no one beats Chuck Norris. EVER.
Next morning may be your last. Roundhouse kick is coming.
Seattle Seahawks: We've got Brian Russell and TWO kickers!
Pacman vs Anderson Silva?
Pacman by flying straight left
Pacman Vs. Lesnar
Manny by Submission(Flying Gogoplata)
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Uh uh
Manny by reverse flying Gogoplata. (never seen one but wouldn’t it be fun?)
No one is that flexible

Now I got it. Basically it means that Pacman can beat Galacticus right?
Or is he from a different era or something? I have no clue about this stuff :P
pacman definitely stronger than Galactus
Pacman vs Thanos w/Infinity gems is a more fair matchup.
LOL they can make it like the old Ali vs Superman comic LMAO
Gimme 1 round!

Aaaah. Aoki. Pacman's lost twin. From different mother.
…and different father..
Its ending within moments
no matter who wins

Magic Submission Pants?
Aoki has Manny beat there

Can't get off the Cotto express sorry
But god damn Pac is nasty

Is it safe to say Pacman will end your meaningful career?
See: Morales, Barrera, De La Hoya, Hatton.
Seattle Seahawks: We've got Brian Russell and TWO kickers!
Pac beat the career out of Morales and Barrera... Finished DLH and just put Hatton in ICU
MONSTER. Its looking like JMM maybe belong in the top 50 all time discussion now too.
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 3, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Not sure if Morales was prime when he got beaten. DLH was done way before that.
But Manny is just one of those guys who get better and better all the time. And I agree, JMM is one of the best we’ve seen in recent years
Morales II he was still okay
He was clearly done by #3 though
DLH was toast.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
It just shows how fucking smart Marquez is
by Full Throttle on May 3, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed. Very very smart
Pacman is a physical specimen, but Marquez is one hell of an intelligent pugilist
In a while
I wanna let Manny fight Cotto, Mosley and or Mayweather and then the rematch. And if JMM takes this one they have a 4th fight before Manny retires
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 3, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Only problem I have with that is Marquezs age
He needs to get in there with Pac again as soon as possible
by Full Throttle on May 3, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions
Well after these rough last 3 outings for Manny
he’s definitely aged with the punishment his body has ta… Oh wait… Well his knuckles have probably bruised up pretty well.
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 3, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions
They'd have to do it pretty soon.
Marquez is getting slower :(
Did anyone notice any difference in Hattons fighting style
Looked like Floyd Sr did not get through to him
Not really sure what he COULD do different
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Manny hit him so hard
its probably good he didn’t have his arm there… Its likely manny would have shattered every bone in ricky’s hand and arm and still had enough left over force to get a 10 count out of it
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on May 3, 2009 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions
I totally agree
Hands low, chin high, squared up, straight foward, no wonder he got hurt… maybe a little more head movement but not enough when it counted
by pretty boy floyd on May 3, 2009 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Could he really have changed that much?
I mean, he’s been fighting like this since he was young, how could he change it all in a few months?
good point
but he had to do it to win and he clearly didn’t do it
by pretty boy floyd on May 3, 2009 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions
He showed improvement against Malignaggi
I think most of it was smokescreen for Pac though. Both of them knew Hatton’s best chance was to smother him, but they were telling everyone he would box so Pac might not be expecting it as much.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Who should Manny fight now?
Mosley, Cotto…Williams? I don’t think Mayweather (as good as he is) will fight any of them, so perhaps Manny should just go ahead and start (or try to) clearing up the welterweight division..
Mayweather if he beats Marquez. Period. If Marquez beats Mayweather, Marquez. Period.
Period! Period!
I’d love to see him against Mosley as a fight fan.
by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Not if Floyd wins big. Floyd-Manny is WAY bigger than Manny-Cotto.
by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Except that Arum could keep 100% of the proceeds from Manny-Cotto
I think it would be a much more compelling fight as well.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Yeah, but if he can make Floyd-Manny he won’t pass it. Manny-Cotto is always there.
by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I guess what I was trying to say is that I am not sure if Mayweather will fight Pacman either (in addition to the other 3). Mayweather was and probably still is an exceptional boxer, but I think everybody should agree that he clearly didn’t clear-up welterweight. He fights guys he can beat easily (or relatively)
He did and he was
But so were Cotto, Margarito, and Williams…and Mosley. I am not saying he should have fought them, it’s a free world. But to be the best you have to fight with the best..and beat them
If Mayweather comes back hard against JMM, I’m not putting him over Manny at P4P. He has to beat Manny now.
by Scott Christ on May 3, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm so intrigued by JMM v. Mayweather
the “former” P4P champ, Marquez who looked good agianst Diaz. I’m actually pretty excited
