Manny for President? Pacquiao petitions for personal political party in Philippines.

Excuse the almost inevitable alliteration. From the Philippine Daily Inquirer:

[T]he ring icon has formally petitioned the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to accredit his organization—called the People’s Champ Movement—as a "local political party."

As a local party, the PCM would field candidates for local government positions in General Santos City and the surrounding province.

The article goes on to speculate the Pacquiao himself will likely make another run for the House of Representatives or perhaps for mayor of General Santos in 2010.

Pac's political ambitions are real and longstanding, but I hope he decides to defer them for the near future, at least. Still, Freddie Roach has said Manny is looking for only a couple more bouts, so that could make a late 2010 electoral campaign a real possibility.

Ha

Pac should learn to leave politics alone. Remember when he ran for the equivalent of Congress over there, and not only did he lose, but it distracted him during training (I want to say for the Barrera fight)?

Joe Mesi and Vitali Klitschko lost as well. I don’t know if a career where you’re likely to suffer some level of permanent brain damage is the best resume for going into politics.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

I think once he retires he’ll definitely get elected to some level of office, just on the strength of his now probably God-like popularity over there. Roach and Arum have both said he’ll be President some day. They could do worse (see Marcos, Ferdinand).

I always try to think of what fighters I might vote for when it comes to political office in America. I always come to the same answer: None of them. It’s not a knock on them and if someone was like, super qualified, then sure, but who is?

Actually I might vote for Roger Mayweather or Floyd Sr.

Right now it’d be tough to find a decent candidate. I probably would’ve voted for Gene Tunney.

Roger’s press conferences alone would be worth the price of admission.

Marciano might’ve made a good Mayor of a small city like Brockton, Mass. He was an avid reader and much more intelligent than his ballsy, swarming style would suggest. I think Leonard would have made a great State Senator… he had that magnetic, wheeler-and-dealer persona.

And people can call me crazy all they want, but I think Tex Cobb would have made a great County Sheriff, as long as it was in the most lawless little berg west of the Mississippi. “It takes a thief…”

He’s smart enough but shit, I don’t know if I want the cop doing DUI arrests to be drunker than the suspect

It must be nice to have such low standards.

Well Alexis Argüello is now the mayor of Managua so It wouldn’t surprise me if he looks into politics after he is done with boxing.

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

If the elections were today, Manny would be president, king, emperor and every other title you can come up with – and all of them for life.

would he? Why did he lose the first time? Wasn’t he already an icon there?

There is a statue of worship for David Beckham in Asia.
If that “Superman” can have something like that im sure the same will be made for Manny.
