Favorite Blow-By-Blow Boxing Announcer Today?
I felt obligated to put up this fanpost because I finally caught an HBO video of Hatton/Pacquiao and thought Jim Lampley put up an absolutely horrible and mundane call of the knockout. He sounded no different than when Hatton was KOed by Mayweather or win Cotto was KOed by Margarito*.
Who is your favorite blow-by-blow announcer today? I say "today" because many of the older folks on here would probably say Howard Cosell or something like that.
I'm going to go against the grain and pick someone across the pond. Ian Darke from Sky Sports has been a favorite of mine calling English soccer matches but he's an even better boxing announcer. He brings a ton of enthusiasm and I think one of his better moments when a British fighter got walloped is in the video link below.

It is still Jim Lampley for me, and I think his lack of “OH MY GOD!”-level call for Hatton-Pacquiao came in part because like the rest of us, he was just completely stunned by what went down. My RBR has gotten pretty hectic in the past, as I flail away at my keyboard trying to keep up with great action, but on this one I was positively shocked and I don’t know if the moment came across as exciting and insane as it truly was. I think Lamps might’ve been in the same boat.
But I’ll tell you this: I was hoping Gus Johnson would get some kind of great moment as soon as Showtime hired him to replace Steve Albert, and when he got one during Froch-Taylor, he did not disappoint. It was like every bit of pent-up, Gus-style sport euphoria he had remaining from calling some weak March Madness games just came pouring out of him in the 12th round.
Joe Tessitore is damn solid, but he sort of lacks a commentator’s “second gear” a lot of the time. I actually like Brian Kenny more than I do Joe as far as the ESPN guys go. Nick Charles has some nights where he’s pretty decent, and some where you’d think he’s never seen a fight before. He was truly wretched for Holyfield-Valuev, at least until the fight became so bad that his sniping and disgust became the star of the fight.
I love Col. Bob Sheridan’s enthusiasm for calling the fights still, but he’s lost some steps and has an annoying habit of trying too hard to cover for house fighters whose fights stink (Spinks-Phillips getting booed in St. Louis, Flores-Herrera getting booed at March Badness). Barry Tompkins just doesn’t do it for me. Bob Papa is like Tessitore; nothing wrong with him, but he wouldn’t be my pick to call the big fight.
I do quite like Ian Darke from what I’ve heard of him (including the Prescott-Khan fight). I thought Steve Albert was still pretty damn good but get why they bumped Gus into his spot, plus Albert called four of my favorite fights ever (Corrales-Castillo and the Vazquez-Marquez trilogy) and was sensational in all of them.
if you want quality lampley

Lampley
I loathe having to sit through Jim Lampley’s pre-fight monologues/montages, but once the action is on nobody really does blow-by-blow better. I could go back and forth about color men and analysts, but he owns the action.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."

The thing with Lampley is that
His pre-fight monologues end up seeping into the actual fight at times. And while I don’t mind opinions, he was going on and on one night about open scoring and that (I think it was Oktay Urkal) quit because of open scoring. When he sticks on something he doesn’t let go and it gets annoying.
If he would just stick to calling the fight instead of talking about the troubled pasts of the likes of Edison Miranda (and Lampley should be the LAST person talking about criminal pasts of other people) then I’d like him more.
Tessitore at times suffers from the same problem with the “human interest story” crap but it’s ESPN and Disney owns it. Then again, he seemed to have a fixation on that boxer who wears Spongebob Squarepants trunks.
Seattle Seahawks: We've got Brian Russell and TWO kickers!
Well, Lampley was right about open scoring
It stinks.
I confess I no longer know what we’re talking about. I thought we we’re talking about blow-by-blow coverage? And when I said I didn’t like his pre-fight monologues, it wasn’t because of what you call “human interest story crap.” Its just that I already know most of the stuff that’s being described and I want to get on with the fight (I also don’t like the way Lampley uses certain words over and over, like “summit”). That’s part of what’s so great about the 24/7 series… helps get a lot of that background stuff out of the way for more casual fans who don’t know the fighters, while giving more fanatical fans a lot of great interviews and camp coverage to chew on.
I heard you were considering doing some RBR on FNF for BLH (wow, talk about alphabet soup!). No offense intendedn, but I’d humbly suggest you might want to listen to Lampley with a bit more of an open mind if you want to really call a fight well. There are things I do not like about him, but when the bell rings he is a seasoned pro.

No shit
I really like Teddy Atlas. I know he’s wrong sometimes, less than he’s made out to be but more than some. I think part of that is that more than other guys he will very directly say who he thinks will win. There is no fence straddling with Atlas, unlike the entire staff of HBO before Pac v. Hatton. I heard more bullshit: ‘If Hatton’s able to get inside and really make this an ugly fight…‘. That’s not the question.
Also, Teddy’s a guy you could actually see in a boxing gym. Unlike Lampley or god help me Larry Merchant’s ephemeral wandering insanity. You could also see Manny in a boxing gym. But Atlas looks, sounds, has the mannerisms of a trainer or just some kid’s Dad sitting in a boxing gym talking friendly shit. Sometimes talking out of his ass, but never really malicious and always friendly.
Gus Johnson’s good too.
Nick Charles and the other guy on Showtime are abominations. I feel greasy just listening to them. Not greasy in a corrupt way, but like somebody’s trying to sell me a shitty car or Jesus. yuck.
well to be fair i don’t think they’re supposed to be making predictions since they are commentating on the fight

Teddy is EXCELLENT at times. Awful at other times. But he’s like that because he cares very, very much.

Yeah, Fran just wasn’t very good. I never hated him, but he just didn’t sound that comfortable.

1. LAMPLEY
distant 2nd: Gus Johnson (although he’s quickly growing on me).
Saturday was not his best night, but Lampley still the best. He’s called so many big fights for a reason. His monologues/epilogues are awesome — he’s more than just a play-by-play commentator, he is a true broadcast journalist. He has full command of not only the sport he’s anchoring, but of the written and spoken word as well. Could you imagine Mike Goldberg of The UFC writing a monologue on MMA anywhere near the level of intelligence that Lampley brings to boxing?
Lampley and Co did a HORRIBLE job this past weekend. Especially during the Soto and the other undercard fight. There were silent moments through out. I like Lampley but Merchant and Emanuel Steward have got to go. Even though Soto was clearly winning the fight and outperforming Goudet ( I think that his name) they would not give him his props. What gives?! Gus Johnson is better IMO. He also does a great job in MMA and the NFL. HBO needs to get Lampley, Kellerman and Lennox Lewis on the same team. Enough is enough. Merchant and his slow mo rants are too much to take now. /end mini rant.
Mike Goldberg: "You know Joe, When Matt and his brother Mark Hughes were growing up, they would pound each other behind the barn."
the fact that you prefer lewis over either merchant or steward is dumbfounding. seriously though explain why you “like” lennox?

Wait, are you? Yeah, you are!!
*Mind Blown
I prefer ANYONE over Merchant!
I’m sorry man but those 2 guys put me to sleep now. I won’t lie back in the day they were good, now not so much. I actually enjoy listening to Lennox Lewis’s analysis more so than Steward. The accent doesn’t bother me at all either. BTW, this is just IMO. Different strokes for different folks.

What about best Ring Announcers?
IMO, Jimmy Lennon Jr all the way. Best delivery, great oldschool sound, better catch phrase (God do I hate lets get ready to rumble) and hes’ all class.

You're not foolin me Kerry Collins.
Tessitore is hilarious
Doing dubbed commentary on ESPN Classic with John Scully for fights as far back as 1986 as if he was actually there.

You guys can say all you want
I am going to go with the Spanish announcer. They can make a incredibly boring fight seem like a FOTY. Gotta love ’em.
"Penelosa is not human." -Max Kellerman on Gerry Penelosa during the Juan Manuel Lopes-Gerry Penelosa bout.
if only i could find that clip from the simpsons of the spanish announcer calling the most boring soccer game ever. spanish folks can make everything exciting

I love Lampley but I think he left alot to be desired in this past PPV.
I love Gus Johnson as well, because it is always nice to have some March Maddess in boxing.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
Max Kellerman
My vote would go to Max Kellerman. He comes off as a boxing fan most importantly and is someone who is articulate. He can also make some off the cuff statements that push buttons and make for some interesting watching.
