Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Chad Dawson v. Antonio Tarver II

Coverage starts at 9:30 ET with the fight on HBO. There are no televised undercard bouts tonight. The Hatton-Pacquiao replay will also air tonight, all two rounds of it. I'd expect they'll fill a healthy amount of time with discussion of that fight and of Chad Dawson.

Picks thread for the fight is here. You'll have until just before 9:30 to get your pick in.

It wasn’t bad so far. Albeit Dawson is too fast for Tarver. Tarver did land probably the best punch of the which Dawson took well

Dawson-Tarver R1

Jab from Dawson, then he goes to the body. Hook from Dawson, Tarver blocking most of those two hooks. Body jab by Dawson. Double thud on traded jabs. Dawson throwing but Tarver is on top of it. Still he’s not doing anything offensively yet. Long left by Tarver, doesn’t land. Dawson backs him off. Dawson bites on a feint but Tarver doesn’t make anything of it.

Is that Peter Manfredo in the white shirt?

Dawson rips away near the end of the round, and Tarver retreats.

Dawson-Tarver R2

Kellerman’s acting like that first round blew out expectations. Kind of exactly what I expected.

Tarver runs around the ring with Dawson flicking a jab at him. Body work by Dawson, but he’s not landing very well upstairs yet. He’s got Tarver on the ropes now, and shoots a right hook and a left, neither of which land. Tarver’s hands are up high, so Dawson throws to the gloves, then goes back to the body on the same combo. Tarver has to accept the body shots. Three more shots blocked. Tarver is doing exactly what he did the first fight.

Clubbing left by Tarver is blocked, Dawson goes back to the body again. He’s throwing in bursts and Tarver isn’t doing much at all. It’s just that Tarver is blocking, what, 90% of this stuff? The body work is solid. Tarver might be baiting him.

Dawson pops Tarver after the ball.

Dawson-Tarver R3

Tarver potshotting the body in a short clinch. Dawson’s hand speed is really showing against Tarver, whose lack of hand speed is going to kill him. He just does not have it without a home run punch. Tarver starting to throw now. It’s like they suddenly traded spots.

Tarver is throwing some weird combinations and even slips into an orthodox stance. Dawson is covering and blocking most of this round. Like a bizarro version of the second round.

Dawson-Tarver R4

Dawson throwing again in the opening minute. Tarver trying to open his guard with a jab now, but Chad’s hands are back in a fighting stance instead of his defensive posture where he’s just arms up.

Dawson throwing and throwing, Tarver blocking and blocking. Dawson NAILS Tarver with a big left! That one landed clean and Tarver felt it. Tarver with a short left. And there’s a couple more lefts. Pretty decent round, really. Most action of the fight and the best punch we’ve seen.

Dawson-Tarver R5

They’re throwing some now. Tarver is RIPPING at Chad here in the first 30 seconds. Dawson is pumping the jab now. Dawson settling it down now. The small crowd is getting pretty into the fight at least.

Nice left by Tarver sneaks in and lands clean. Dawson holding onto Tarver’s right hand now, and HERE COMES DAWSON WITH A COMBO! Crowd really is coming alive, and this is turning into a pretty decent fight. Dawson with an uppercut. Overwhelming round in spots for Dawson, and I go with him. He outlanded him 2-to-1 or so.

Dawson-Tarver R6

Tarver seems to be tiring a bit, and Dawson seems to be finding every look at the right time. I’ve got him pulling away pretty solidly, just like the first fight but with a little more action, although it’s certainly slowed down this round on both counts. Tarver is landing less than 10 punches a round.

Dawson-Tarver R7

Hard body shot by Dawson. He’s throwing more, landing more, landing better. There’s a wild right hook that misses, and Tarver starts coming on! I think Dawson might be feeling it. DAWSON’S KNEE HAS BUCKLED! Ooh, but he’s back with a flurry. Tarver is pressing hard down the stretch. Dawson might be getting a break as the round ends…now.

Dawson-Tarver R8

Dawson with two jabs, Tarver fires three back. A lot of the time the last few rounds it’s 40-year old Tarver who’s coming forward. Dawson is crowding him now. Jabs from each man. Two sharp jabs by Tarver. Body shot Dawson. Tarver just misses a nice straight left. Dawson with a four-punch combo after he makes Tarver miss again. Good left by Tarver, Dawson didn’t see it coming and was swinging a right. Dawson gets caught turned around, and Tarver misses a chance to pounce.

Dawson-Tarver R9

Big flurry from Dawson backing Tarver down, and he goes right back to it when he finds Tarver again. Not a lot landing, but it’s snazzy. Tarver hit hard with a right hook, but doesn’t miss a beat. Pushing body shot by Tarver trying to get Dawson off of him, because Chad is smothering this round. Now it’s Tarver coming forward halfway in, with Dawson backing away. Dawson seems to have two motives: Wearing Tarver out with offense, and further testing his stamina by making him chase the rest of the time, and mostly punch air. It’s been one of his better performances, really, and old Antonio has done a good job defensively too.

Left hand by Dawson, and he ends the round throwing.

Dawson-Tarver R10

Dawson staying close to Tarver again to start the round. Dawson is making Tarver miss just about everything now. Tarver is punching air over and over and over. Long left grazes Dawson. He’s now dancing to keep Tarver out of the fight — I think he thinks he’s comfortably ahead.

Dawson’s corner thinks he’s giving rounds away. Dawson replies, “He ain’t touchin’ me.” This is two guys who refuse to agree with their corners.

Dawson-Tarver R11

Dawson with some decent shots, but not square, and Tarver resets quickly. This fight has slipped and slipped away from Tarver. Manny has a hard-on for Tarver’s jab, but it’s really just touching Dawson, IMO. Tarver coming on though — he’s taking this round as it stands with some good shots. Dawson would get picked apart something awful by Bernard Hopkins so for his sake I hope he doesn’t go there.

Dawson with a nice combo with about 30 seconds left. Tarver excited about himself at the bell.

Just My opinion

I think Dawson would benefit greatly from going to Freddie Roach. Roach seems to focus on a guys strengths and forcing his guys opponents to fight to those strengths. Dawson’s is obviously combinations and movement. The peek-a-boo defense for Bad Chad is only working against him. Freddie would have him slipping and punching more

Crowd is very excited for the final round. Small but lively.

Interesting final round but Tarver just has no urgency, which he did in the 12th round last time they fought, and that was very exciting. Dawson swinging loaded up rights and lefts, but not landing much. Dawson ends it with a won round.
