Diaz, Malignaggi quibbling over one pound
UPDATE: DiBella Entertainment sent out a press release stating that the fight is a done deal for August 22 in Houston, with an agreed-upon weight of 138.5. While ridiculous, I'm happy it's done.
BoxingScene.com's Rick Reeno reports that the ongoing negotiations between 135-pound contender Juan Diaz and 140-pound contender Paulie Malignaggi are down to a one-pound difference. Diaz had insisted that it not go over 137 pounds, but now has said he's willing to go to 138. Malignaggi refuses to drop below 139, though.
Reeno says the same thing, and I'm going to echo it: What the hell is Juan Diaz doing here? Either take this fight, even at the full 140 pounds, or don't. Malignaggi hasn't really looked good since the first fight with Lovemore N'dou and he has zero power. This is a fight I'd pick Diaz to win every single day of the week. Malignaggi won't be able to deter Diaz, who has good enough speed to keep up with even an on-point Paulie. Diaz projects, in my view, to simply pressure and batter Paulie to death.
With his style and his own lack of power, I wouldn't really want to see Diaz go up to 140 against some guys, but Paulie isn't one of them. This is likely a bigger money fight than a bout with Rolando Reyes, who I'd even say is a much bigger threat to Diaz than Malignaggi is. I think we've seen Paulie's peak. He's a one-dimensional fighter with heart for days but such an insane lack of punching power that he just isn't going to be able to beat top guys, who now know that the way to beat him is to walk through him and find him. If Ricky Hatton could so easily manhandle Malignaggi last November, Diaz should have no problem. Hatton and Diaz are fairly comparable fighters in many ways, though Ricky is stronger than Juan.
Really, either make the fight or stop haggling about it. We're talking about -- at best -- a Boxing After Dark main event or a decent PPV undercard fight, and if it doesn't happen everyone goes back to Diaz-Reyes and that probably gets made, and Paulie tries to find another fight for himself. 140 is little risk for Diaz against Paulie; 139 is the same.

Whats one pound?
These catchweights are getting silly.
When you dream ,anything is possible. People can fly. Theres a moment when you wake and become slowy aware of your surroundings..but you are still dreaming. You may think you can fly but you better not try...
seriously
I don’t mind a thing like Pavlik-Hopkins where they meet at 170, but when we’re talking about 138, 139 pounds — just fight at 140. If you can’t fight at 140 instead of 138 then find a new job or a different opponent.

The answer is simple: meet at 138.5 lbs. I’ve long thought that should be it’s own division anyway… Super Junior Light Welterweight.

with 139.25 as the Super Duper Junior Light Welterweight division....

All open issues have been resolved regarding the proposed Paulie Malignaggi and Juan Diaz fight on August 22, 2009 in Houston, Texas.
DiBella Entertainment and Golden Boy wrapped up negotiations today and tied up all loose ends for the fight- including the agreed upon weight of 138.5 lbs.
"I told Paulie to lay off his Grandma’s pasta and eat one less cannoli," said Lou DiBella about Malignaggi dropping an extra pound or two. "Paulie is confident of his speed and boxing ability and is prepared to win in the lion’s den of Houston."
"This is a fight between two guys looking to prove something. We are both coming of losses in big fights and we are both coming in hungry. Expect fireworks," said Malignaggi.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
I was sort of kidding...
But, yeah, this doesn’t surprise me.

I think SC should grant you a win by knockout on the predictions league for this.... :)

From two non-punchers at a moronic catchweight. Woo!

Juan is a non-puncher, but yes he had JMM hurt a couple times. That fight spoke to JMM’s insane guts. He was physically outmatched by Diaz, I think! Contrary to popular belief, I really like Juan Diaz. Love the way he fights.

oh yeah i’m not delusional he is a non-puncher, my inner fanboy took offense to you “said” it.

It really is ridiculous. I know that this is Boxing’s hopeless “grass vs. astroturf” argument, but I’ve always been a big proponent of the original 8. But they aren’t going to eliminate divisions at this point, just like they aren’t going to get rid of turf.
Cruiserweight is the only intermediate division I really support, since people in general became so much larger over the course of the 20th century. I’ve always thought Super Middleweight, Junior Middleweight and Junior Welterweight were not such great ideas, and were really more like glorified catchweights than real divisions.

can someone please mention that Baby Bull graduated from school?
I think that needs to be mentioned in every article/post about him. Thx.

C’mon Juan just fight him. If you are worried about losing to Paulie and concerned about 1 pound of weight than maybe you should quit boxing and follow your other ambition full time. What is he thinking IMO he will cream Paulie at whatever weight. I really like Juan Diaz but this is ridiculous and so are all these fighters wanting so many catchweight fights these days.
