Those who don't get Versus

can feel free to discuss the FNF card, which isn’t half bad either. I’m seriously considering also getting the Fernando Guerrero card and RBRing chunks of that one, or at least doing a write-up of it.

Here's video of the weigh-in

Pascal looks completely ripped. Diaconu looks a little doughy as usual, but he’s at his lowest weight in years.

I'll gladly RBR some of the FNF fights

Particularly Mean Joe Greene.

I do get Versus so I’ll have so much fun watching fights….then will be disappointed at around 5:00 PM on ESPN Classic.

OK, I'm caving

I bought the Guerrero card. I probably won’t RBR other than the main event, but I’ll provide live updates.

As a side note, Prize Fight is doing a hell of a job for a smaller promoter. They played a big role in getting the Peterson brothers where they are today, and they’re developing Guerrero and Porter pretty well, plus they’re packing the house locally in Salisbury. My only regret is that one of their other fighters, The Swamp Donkey, isn’t on this card.

Just a note for people who might straggle in late

Diaconu-Pascal is actually the UNDERCARD fight, so it’s the one that will be starting at 9. Because Jeff Wald owns the rights to the TV spot, he’s made Ross vs. Simms the main event.

I’m exceptionally tired so that means I can watch the one good fight, RBR it, and then see if Ross bombs but probably NOT RBR it.

Maybe the website just has it wrong though

Someone from Montreal has said the Versus website has it wrong. You decide:

http://www.versus.com/scorecard

It also says Diaconu-Pascal is 10 rounds, which is wrong, so who knows.

Well, they actually have an announcer

Which is better than some internet cards I’ve seen.

And as I write it, the audio cuts out. It sounds like they have Bernstein doing the card, if there’s audio.

Got it working now

Al Bernstein and Steve Albert are calling the fights. The only semi-annoying thing is that they’re calling it from a studio, and they’re not feeding through the crowd noise.

Dominic Wade in the first fight, he knocked Anthony Cannon into a corner and just wailed on him. Hard too tell too much from that fight.

They also mention that Prize Fight will be broadcasting all of their cards

They hold a monthly fight series, occasionally with some big names, so it could be interesting.

Next fight about to start – Rodrika Ray vs. Alex Guerrero. Guerrero is Fernando’s older brother. It’s his pro debut after a long amateur career.

I'm an idiot

I didn’t mean Steve Albert, I meant Steve Farhood.

Also, the more I listen, the more clear it becomes the other guy isn’t Bernstein. They showed him at the beginning for a minute, but I guess that was just a recorded bit.

Alex Guerrero vs. Rodrika Ray, cruiserweights

Alex is 6’3", 190, Fernando is 5’9", 154. Similar faces, but other than that, I wouldn’t think they’re related. Completely different build. Despite coming in at 190, I doubt Guerrero could boil down to 175. He’s a beanpole.

Guerrero’s on the outside, mostly throwing jabs and trying to control distance. Ray, the much bigger man (and normally a heavyweight), keeps trying to get inside a bit. After he gets popped once square on the chin, however, he starts running a bit. Ray stupidly is just running and not trying to do much other than run. As the bigger, more powerful and shorter guy, you’d think he’d try to get on the inside, but no such luck.

First round ends, not too much really happened. Guerrero at least popped a few nice jabs.

10-9 Guerrero

I'm not going to RBR the rest of this one

It’s taken only about a round and a half for me to definitively determine that big bro isn’t a real prospect, plus the fight itself is a bit of a dud. Ray just keeps running backwards. The most excitement so far is that Ray’s body guard came undone (I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before), so they had to spend a couple minutes getting it tied up again. After the break, both guys at least came out with a bit more intent. They have one good exchange, both land a couple decent punches, but Guerrero probably came out the better on that one. 20-18 Guerrero.

Farhood has the fight a draw

I have it 3-1 for Guerrero. In Salisbury, I doubt Ray wins this one without taking it convincingly.

Anyway, I don’t care enough about the result to hang around for it. I’m heading outside for a smoke before the Versus card starts.

Shawn Porter vs. Brandon Wooten on tap

Porter was an Olympic alternate at middleweight after coming in third place in the Olympic trials (since Danny Jacobs, who came in second, went pro). As an amateur he scored knockdowns against both Guerrero and Jacobs. He’s short and stocky, but packs a punch.

Wooten is a late replacement journeyman. The only name I recognize on his resume is Grady Brewer, who he got knocked out by in 3.

Versus card getting started — Ross v. Simms

by schraubd on Jun 19, 2009 9:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Porter v. Wooten Round 1

Porter comes out very active, both fighters in the middle of the ring. Porter fires off a nice combo, really up on the balls of his feet. He catches Wooten with a nice left hook, followed up by a right uppercut which floors Wooten.

Porter’s now taking his time a bit. He get Wooten up against the ropes, and this is just BRUTAL. He unloads about a 15 punch combo on Wooten, all punches to the body that land cleanly. Wooten’s back out in the middle of the ring now, but clearly still hurt. Wooten jumps in for a punch, and Porter catches him with a check hook that puts Wooten down again. He gets up, but the very next punch puts him down for a third time, and the ref stops the fight.

PORTER KO1

Not the best opponent in the world, but Wooten had never been KOed that quickly before. Wooten looks like he was going for 5 or 6 rounds. His eye is already closing up, and he has a big gash across the bridge of his nose.

Porter will be interesting

He’s technically sound, good activity, throws huge punches, but he’s just so short that you have to imagine he’ll have problems at some point. If he can get down to welterweight, he could be a beast. At 154, he’s probably a fringe contender.

Ross-Simms R1

Ross flicking a jab. Simms is definitely the bigger man. Simms with a quick combo, most of it glances at best. Ross digging to the body, now throws shots that hit the gloves upstairs. Pretty good pace being cut so far.

Simms with a couple jabs and a left. Ross with a nice body shot, Simms responds in kind. Simms caught on the ropes. Big over the top left by Ross. Right hook gets past the glove. Simms covering up and Ross is chopping away at him. I like what Ross has done so far.

This storm is REALLY kicking up now, so again, there’s a decent chance I lose internet, cable or both.

Farah Ennis vs. Bobby Jordan on tap

I haven’t seen Ennis before, so I don’t know what to expect. Ennis is 10-0 with 5 KOs. Bobby Jordan is 6-0 with 2 KOs. Fight is at super middleweight. Ennis is considered to be more of the prospect, but Jordan has faced the better competition. Also, this is an 8-round fight, and Ennis has only gone 6 before. Hopefully it’s interesting at least.

Ross-Simms R4

The Vs. team wondering why Ross is backing down while Simms isn’t pressuring seems a little weird. That’s how Ross fights and Simms is a bigger guy. Why stand in Simms’ wheelhouse? He’s making Simms look like a total bum, attacking the body well, and landing basically all the punches in the fight at this point.

Ross continues to do what he’s been doing, but not landing much in the way of big shots. There’s some swelling under Ross’ right eye and he has slowed down this round. Simms’ trunks are about to fall off.

Sadly, Ross is hanging back, gathering himself, and Simms is standing there like a deer in the headlights. Ross with a nasty body shot, and Simms felt that one.

Ross-Simms R5

Simms’ trunks are falling down again. He literally just left the corner and had them adjusted by the referee during the last round.

Ross chopping, slapping, putting Simms on the ropes, just looking to make him open something up so he can land a good shot. Simms throwing some big shots now, and lands a good one on the swelling. Ross back to putting some heat into the fight, and Simms back to laying on the ropes. He’s throwing back some, and now there’s a break to fix his shorts again.

And they immediately begin falling again. Are these trunks he wore at heavyweight?

Ross-Simms R6

Simms has had his trunks taped up around the waist. You see something new all the time.

Accidental headbutt shakes Ross up, but otherwise this fight has settled into an obvious pattern. Ross has a small cut from the butt. Ross is now doing nothing but backing away. Simms is standing there. Simms with a left, but he put himself on the ropes. Left hand by Ross sneaks in. Right hook comes in. Simms hits the gloves a bunch. Round ends. Eh.

Too bad FNF is late tonight. The college baseball game is only in the 3rd right now, so it probably won’t start until 11 or so.

Ross-Simms R8

An utter bore. Count me out of Ross fights until he fights a legit cruiserweight. He has owned this fight and it’s not even remotely close.

At this point, I think Simms is sick of being there and getting hit. He’s not been hurt, and part of that is a decent defense and willingness to turtle, and part of it is Ross not closing the show or ever trying to.

Why can't

Fighters from The Contender be exciting like guys from The Ultimate Fighter (Jardine, Evans, Griffin…..)

80-72 Ross and this fight alone is why I sympathize with Montreal’s rioting.

Fair is fair — he’s a ton of fun to watch.

There have been plenty of exciting fighters on the show, it’s just the only one that ever won is Bika, and he was already good.

by SC on Jun 19, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Bika has dramatically improved pre-Contender to where he’s at now. Technically, he’s leaps and bounds ahead of where he was (which is not to say he’s now Mr. Slick — but he was really crude at the start of his career and now he at least isn’t actively hurting himself with his technique).

Even then, though, Lucien Bute blew him out. Now, Bute is really really good — 2nd in the division right now to Kessler — but I think Pepe really helped Bika out allowed.

But the Contender is mostly journeymen and younger guys applying to be journeymen. Bika is about the only guy they’ve ever had who was still in his prime and had already done some good stuff.

And fighting at 168 and surely past his best days. There are asterisks there too.

by SC on Jun 19, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, but if this was just a random scheduled fight, we’d have said “solid win for Bika, puts him back into contention”.

And while Bika basically ended Codrington’s career, he was considered a bona fide prospect coming up (“one half of the chin checkers….”). He was tearing up the Contender field even more than Ross did. And those of us who saw Kirkland/Vera knows just how impressive it is to blitz out Vera in two.

by schraubd on Jun 19, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Codrington getting Vera out that fast is crazy now. I mean Kirkland might as well have hit him with the kitchen sink.

by SC on Jun 19, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Codrington had lots of limitations — he had self-doubt, he was chinny, and he didn’t have great defense. But his pure offensive power was terrifying. I don’t think I’ve seen anybody ever change Bika’s expression before (well, except the ref in the Manfredo fight), and Codrington had him down and wobbly.

Jordan vs. Ennis

It’s pretty clear why these guys don’t have great knockout ratios. They both have impressive physiques, but their punches don’t have much behind them. Jordan doesn’t seem to get his weight behind his punches, and when he does, they’re wild. Ennis just doesn’t throw enough overall, waiting a little too much for the perfect moment, and occasionally flicking out the jab. When he does throw, they’re not with much intent. Whoever wins is probably more of a gatekeeper than anything, unless they can pick up the workrates.

Ross-Simms R10

Simms hurt on a body shot, but they’re calling it a low blow and Simms is gonna rest a spell in the corner. Replay is inconclusive from my angle but whatever, they seem convinced it was definitely low. Ross throwing some big shots with about 30 seconds to go. Simms is bent over and being held up by the ropes. So it’s a standing eight count. Simms is geting a nice slow count, so he’ll finish the fight.

Diaconu-Pascal R1

Diaconu with two good shots, and a third. Pascal flicking a jab, then moving back out. Good shots by Pascal now. We’re getting a pretty good start. Pascal moving side to side, not letting Diaconu swarm, and using range. He’s in and out, and even when he doesn’t land flush, it looks good, and the ensuing miss makes Diaconu look bad.

Good body shot by Pascal — right on target. Beautiful punch. And then he was out. Diaconu swarms in now, two rights land, and Pascal gets away. Right hand! Left hand Diaconu. This is a tight round. Pascal is doing everything he does well AND everything he does wrong so far. Pascal ends the round with another good shot.

Diaconu-Pascal R2

Diaconu barely avoids a ROUNDHOUSE right hand, and then Pascal barely avoids real trouble by getting back. “Diaconu is a guy that can get you out of there with one punch.” When?

Pascal back to the body, then back out again. Pascal with a right hand. Diaconu is really struggling to time Pascal and Pascal is starting to really take control of this fight. Diaconu is stuck shuffling at center ring and not landing anything. Jab by Pascal. Jab and a body shot. Diaconu comes forward, and now Pascal UNLOADS while Diaconu holds his arm. Marlon Wright lets all that holding and hitting go. Hey, well…be consistent, I guess.

Clear Pascal fight so far.

Guerrero-Norman 1

Norman looks absolutely ripped. Norman comes out attacking right from the get go. both guys land a nice shot at about the same time, and then they tie up. Norman hangs on the outside, judging with a jab, feeling each other out. Guerrero comes on the inside, Norman pounds some nice shots to the body, while Guerrero gets him with a nice shot upstairs. Guerrero’s backed into the corner, and it’s obvious that Norman is the bigger stronger guy, imposing his will on Guerrero. Norman is just ripping shots to the body, while Guerrero keeps coming upstairs and ripping him back with uppercuts.

The ref warns Norman for leading with his head. Guerrero on the inside, throws a couple combos to the head, but Normanis hooking the body at the same time. Guerrero finally wisens up and takes a step back and lands a couple of shots upstairs. Norman comes back with a couple big shots to the body. I think Norman took that one.

Diaconu-Pascal R3

The commentators talk about what the real mystery is, and I agree: Is Pascal now going to get too stupid and cocky, or as they phrase it, ‘brave’? We’ve seen him get dumb and buzzed by Omar Pittman. Diaconu is a lot better than Pittman.

Pascal now moving around, jabbing, hooking, getting out. Diaconu with a good flurry, rights and lefts, and now he’s chasing. Montreal crowd is awesome.

Pascal finds himself potentially in trouble, scurries, and then resets and goes back to the jab. It’s been really effective so far. Pascal walking around with his hands down now. Moron. Diaconu getting Pascal to rush in, and now getting closer to timing him. Holding and hitting, Diaconu holding the arm and Pascal hitting him for it. Marlon Wright lets it go as long as any referee would — and I’m not really bashing him for that.

Decent shot Diaconu. This is getting rough.

Guerrero-Norman Round 2

Both guys come out to the middle of the ring, and are back to feeling each other out a bit. Guerrero’s finally going to the body as well, but for every punch Guerrero lands, Norman is landing two. Norman pushes Guerrero back into the ropes and scores a few big hooks to the body. Guerrero comes back up the pipe with an uppercut that snaps Norman’s head back.

Guerrero takes a step back, throws a big right, followed by a left and another big right that knocks Norman back into the ropes and down.

By the way, the ref for this one is that midget ref who can’t be taller than 5’8".

Norman throws a couple of big shots to the head, but Guerrero dishes back what he takes. He HAS NORMAN HURT. HUGE COMBO LEFT RIGHT LEFT WITH HOOKS TO THE HEAD. NORMAN IS STUMBLING ACROSS THE RING AND FALLS OVER. HE’S STRUGGLING TO GET UP!

Norman barely beats the count, but he clearly doesn’t have his legs, and the ref waves it off.

GUERRERO TKO2

Not a bad win at all. Norman usually fights at 168, and wasn’t KOed until late by some pretty decent opposition.

Yeah, Diaconu is getting himself back into this. Pascal isn’t fighting smart now, which makes for a better show, so go get ‘em, dude. What I’m learning so far is that I think Pascal CAN win a brawl with Diaconu, but Diaconu cannot win a boxing match with Pascal. Lucky for Diaconu, Pascal is willing to get funky with him.

Big shots miss on both sides, or glance at best. And Pascal is now in and out, and he DRILLS Diaconu. Diaconu complained about the shot to the back of the head, but it was AGAIN Diaconu holding on and leaning. Actually I like what Wright is doing tonight. He’s letting them fight.

Pascal misses a long overhand right. now they’re throwing heavy leather, and Diaconu gets the better of that exchange.

Body shot by Pascal, Diaconu chases him as Pascal goes back. They’re really mixing it up now. Really you can give Diaconu one round only right now, and I didn’t even give him that one — hang on, they’re throwing again! This has become a war. Katie, bar the door!

Diaconu-Pascal R7

This fight is closer than my card, but I can’t see it closer than 58-55 for Pascal right now. Even still, it’s closer than that, really.

Nice combo by Diaconu, and Pascal goes down really low to get out of that danger. Pascal with two big rights, now two quick body shots. Diaconu coming right back at him. Nice shot by Diaconu. Pascal backs Diaconu down with a combination now! This has been back and forth for rounds now. Great stuff.

Diaconu has a little blood.

UPPERCUT BY PASCAL! Diaconu felt that. Pascal slips in the corner, lucky his knee didn’t get screwed up there.

Diaconu-Pascal R8

Pascal getting cocky, shuffling his hands now, pulling some Roy Jones shit. Pascal cuts it out and goes back to sticking and moving. Pascal with another right hand. I don’t mean that he’s dominating like winning easily, but if this keeps up and goes to the cards, I don’t agree that Diaconu is going to have much of an argument. I think Pascal is surely winning this fight.

Right hand and a beautiful left hook after by Pascal. He’s so much faster than Diaconu it’s not even funny, which is a phrase I don’t get, because why would that be “funny”?

Lots of Diaconu “just missing” — Pascal is owning the ring these last two rounds. And they end it warring.

Diaconu-Pascal R9

Pascal fighting smarter now, even with his hands low at a distance. Diaconu, bless him, keeps moving forward. Three shots and Diaconu can’t do anything about it but miss a counter shot. Now Pascal with another huge flurry. Diaconu is tough but he’s athletically outclassed against Pascal. Clear Pascal round. I think this fight is well since over — there’s only one round I really quibble on with myself (the third). This is a Pascal win right now.

Now they’re talking about the “Well Pascal didn’t TAKE the title away” bullshit, and calling it bullshit, because it’s bullshit. Preach it.

Diaconu with a couple nice hooks. A minute left in this round and so far I think it’s Diaconu’s to lose. One-two, not a lot of zip on it but it lands and scores. Right hand Pascal, but Diaconu gets some back. Pascal with two body shots and Diaconu gets nothing back. Diaconu with a right, and now they’re mixing it up once again. Three to the body by Pascal. He’s been just excellent using his hand speed and reflexes to work Diaconu downstairs.

Diaconu-Pascal R11

Pascal juuuust might be getting a little tired this round. Juuuust maybe. We might have some championship rounds drama. But then here comes Pascal with more quick combinations. What the hell — he’s Energerizer bunny’ing it in there. BIG RIGHT HAND BY DIACONU! That hurt Pascal! Pascal throwing back with all he’s got! WOO! How do you like THEM apples?

Left hand by Pascal. Man, looks like his legs are 100% back already. Diaconu needs to press. Pascal backs up, then throws a flurry! Diaconu charging on him, and they’re throwing again. Diaconu just isn’t doing quite enough. But Pascal just might be buzzed still.

We’re gonna have a 12th round of drama if Diaconu comes out to take it.

And here we go! Fight gets a standing ovation at the opening bell.

Pascal is circling with his hands at his sides. Oh boy — he’s staying totally away from Diaconu. He’s got no interest in engaging. Diaconu has to make this happen.

Right hand Diaconu. Two jabs from Diaconu, right doesn’t get there. Right hand Diaconu might have stung Pascal. HERE THEY GO! PASCAL COMING BACK NOW! Diaconu right in there! Hlaf the round left to go!

Diaconu has to throw it all out there I think. Right hand Pascal thuds on Diaconu’s dome. HUGE shot misses from Pascal. Wow! Diaconu with a left and right! HERE COMES PASCAL! WHAT A FIGHT!
