Tim Sylvia Thinking About Boxing Full Time
Our bloody buddies at Bloody Elbow discuss Tim Sylvia's asinine assertions that he might move to boxing full time. ESPN criticizes the talks as well.

his boxing in mma is sub-standard. Fedor dropped him as did Couture, and Arlovski(twice). He has no hope in pro boxing.

i agree..
but a lot of mma fighters have sub-standard boxing. imho, watching their style seems so unconventional and sloppy. but i guess thats part of mma?
Most MMA fighters do arm punches and that will not cut it.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
My understanding is it takes you out of position where you're vulnerable to takedown
if you put your weight behind it like a boxer would. That could just be my misconception though. I barely watch MMA.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
It depends. If Juan Urango could wrestle he'd be perfect for MMA
because in MMA its greatly beneficial to square up more to your opponent to help stop takedowns. If you fight in a typical 1 leg forward boxing stance with one leg out in front of the other it makes it more difficult to avoid takedowns as you’re leaving a big target for wrestlers out in front of your body. To negate this you have to have a very fast sprawl and have enough power and good enough boxing/muay thai/kickboxing to make it worthwhile to risk leaving your leg out like that.
Arlovski has decent hands and a lightning quick sprawl so he’ll fight less squared up in a more traditional stance (if only he wasn’t china chinned). Anderson Silva often fights 1 leg out but that’s because his most dangerous weapon is knees from the clinch so when somebody shoots on him they are just as vulnerable if generally not more so than he is… Prime Mirko Crocop Filipovic was an example of a standup fighter that was able to compete in MMA while fighting in a boxing/kickboxing stance instead of squared up because his sprawl was even better than Arlovski’s.

Has he fought Mercer yet?

I'm sure we'll have a thousand post thread for that one. It's on the same night as Cotto-Clottey IIRC.

I think that Mercer can KO him… Syliva seems to be chinny….

Eh his chin is actually decent.
Fedor hit Sylvia with about the same punch he hit Arlovski with. AA is chinny. He went to sleep in mid-air. Sylvia just didn’t wanna get hit with anymore of them and turned and fell.

I hope Mercer cains him-Tommy Morrison style. Hit him with ya stick Ray.

That would be great, but if it starts to go that way, I hope the ref stops it a little sooner Mercer-Morrison… that was a brutal murder scene, and was definitely a very late stoppage… Morrison could’ve been killed.

Most Brutal KO ever? ..got to be up there
Totally agree. Who was the ref? Was it Tony Perez?. I cant remember but i can remember him calmly tapping Ray on the back while Morrison was trapped on ropes. Sick. I would of been swinging round Mercers neck to stop him.

Yes
It was Perez… who was also the ref in the brutal stoppage of Kenny Norton by Gerry Cooney… that was also incredibly late, with Norton hung up and being savagely murdered. I have mixed feelings about Perez because of these stoppages.

Perez...
Man…i forgot about Norton-Cooney Jrok. Ya know i dont know which one is the worst. I mean Poor Ken was almost sat down on bottom turnbuckle and taking monster uppercuts.
Perez seems to be one of these refs that forgets he is one and just watchs..

Ike Williams vs. Beau Jack one of the worst, latest stoppages ever in my book. It’s frankly just obscene to watch. It was as though the referee was waiting for Ike to literally beat Beau to death. You could see that even Ike was freaked out by it towards the end.. .“You mean you want me to keep going????”

Freaky. I was just looking for this one.Could not remember who Jack was fighting. I saw this years ago on a HBO Mike Tyson greatest knockout Video.

Heh
We really are on the same wavelength today. I was just thinking of that one…. winding up like Babe Ruth. I’m not saying that referees should be overprotective den mothers, but that sort of refereeing does not do the sport any favors in my opinion.
