Arum called me and I told him I don't have a problem with the fight being at 145 pounds. In fact, I don't care if Cotto wants to weigh 200 pounds. I trust my fighter, so I care very little about the weight issues. I haven't talked to Manny, who will make the final decision. He is a grown man who makes his own decisions. All I can do is give my recommendation. Obviously we want to see Manny get paid more than his last fight. There's no reason to take a step back on the money, so we still have to discuss those details.
Freddie Roach, saying he's OK with Cotto at 145 for a Pacquiao matchup. Chunks of this seem a bit disingenuous based on what we've heard before, but this is a big step in the right direction. (Link in Spanish)

Glad to see that Roach has changed his tune a bit.
145 is a fair weight for this fight. I don’t think the one or two pounds he was complaining about earlier would have made a tremendous difference, and in the end, having Cotto fight at a more reasonable weight will help Manny’s legacy should he prevail. I think this fight will be outstanding, and I think these two guys could wind up fighting more than once given the quality level I expect and the $ it will generate.

Doesn't care if Cotto come in 200 lbs
Yeah okay. Wanted Cotto to come to 143, now he doesn’t care.
Anyone else heard, Roach wants 70-30 for this fight?

Standard Negotiating Tactics
He’s starting out high and is working his way down (though I’d assume Pac’s agent is the one doing the real negotiating). There’s no doubt that Manny deserves a bigger slice of the pie, given what he brings to the table, but certainly not 70%. The reality is that PacMan NEEDS Cotto to make a big fight in the fall, because there’s no one else out there who the public will pay big money to watch him fight (with the exception of Mosley, who Roach appears dead-set against). So, in a sense, Cotto does have some degree of leverage in these negotiations.

Oh… I am sure.
But even if it’s 60-40 or 65-35 I wouldn’t be surprise if Cotto demands something from the PPV

Ah, Roach is like any good negotiator
He’s starting out high and is working his way down (though I’d assume Pac’s agent is the one doing the real negotiating). There’s no doubt that Manny deserves a bigger slice of the pie, given what he brings to the table, but certainly not 70%. At that number, Cotto might be better off with 50% of the pie to fight Mosley again.

i think the fight would be bigger if it was for cotos trinket at 147.
i understand roach trying to get the advantage but these guys are the same size. why not go after coto AND his belt?

It could and probably will still be for Cotto’s title. All you have to be is 147 or lighter for it to be a title fight.

At 145, in can still be for a title
As long as it’s at or below the welterweight limit of 147.
Here’s one I somewhat disagree with Scott on. I don’t understand the fuss, especially at 145. Catchweight fights have been happening forever. Leonard-Hearns II was at a catchweight of 162, and Leonard won his ‘super middleweight’ title while weighing only 160 fully clothed. Terry Norris-Meldrick Taylor was at a catchweight of 149, and Norris usually came in around 152. There are a few other prominent ones I’m sure I’m forgetting. It’s one thing to get a guy to drain to the point where they’re bone dry, but having the other guy shed an extra pound or two shouldn’t be a huge deal, especially when Cotto usually weighs in at 146. A 145 catchweight should just mean an extra hour or two in the steam room.

145 I do not mind
It was the bullshit 143 talk that Roach previously insisted upon. At that point you’re just angling for a gimme because Cotto’s going to be dried out. I find it dishonorable, if I may be so ridiculous. But 145 is fine, and catchweights in general don’t bug me so much as some of the crap we’ve been seeing. 138.5 I still reference as my tipping point. A HALF?
