Game Review: EA Sports' Fight Night Round 4
FanPost promoted by SC
Picked up a copy of Fight Night Round 4 after work and have been playing it with my brother. So far I'm really impressed, while he hates it. If you're looking to get this game, be aware that it is VERY different than FNR3. In a lot of ways it's more realistic. It's also a lot less technical as far as video games are concerned. Knockouts seem to come easier, and there are more cut stoppages (so having a fighter who can headbutt as a dirty move may help).
Visually: Visually this game is amazing. The fighters are spot on. There is definition in the muscle. When a guy gets hit his body deforms as opposed to the glove passing through. The backgrounds look great.
The most impressive part of the visuals is how realistic the physics are. The punch speeds are right, the motions are fluid and you can get into a punching rhythm while you're playing that lets you land combos that feel natural. The motion is not jerky or lagging anymore. This was huge for me.
Game play: Very very very (did I say very?) different game from FNR3. The biggest change for someone who got good at FNR3 (my brother) is that it's no longer based on the mechanical defense that he would use to win fights. Block, block, flash KO. Blocking is really just cover up high or low and with the faster, more fluid punching, you wouldn't be able to defend like in the old game. Flash KO is gone.
You can get right up against another fighter, no more invisible wall. This may be great for a banger/counter puncher. However, I found in this game, the new push button was something to take advantage of. I was Calzaghe or Hearns, and would shove (X button) the other guy away, then land straight punches.
This video explains it better than I can:
More after the jump...
Sound: The soundtrack on FNR3 was fun. Catchy entrance music type songs that you wanted to turn up. You don't notice the music in the same way with this game. It's a shame because usually EA does great soundtracks.
The ESPN commentary gets old fast. It drowns out the sounds of the fight and the ref. I am going to turn it off in my settings. They really say basic things that you don't care about at times that take away from how exciting the fight is.
One thing that stuck out:
"We may not realize it but boxing is a worldwide sport. You can see different styles all over the country."
Fighters: There are 40 guys in the game, plus an unlimited number of creatable characters. There are more of the guys I'd want to see in this version. I like seeing Tyson in there though I have yet to use him. The rankings are debatable; Manny Pacquiao an 89? Seems low.
The game features guys who are not huge names yet. Victor Ortiz, Sergio Mora and Robert Guerrero are all featured in the game.
Legacy Mode: Has stepped up its game. It's not work out, fight, work out, fight anymore. Now there are rankings and you can become a champ, or lose too many and get dropped. You can create a fighter and change everything about him, right down to the entrance music and robes. It goes as far as to let you upload a photo and lay your image over the characters face. Neat little feature I have yet to play around with.
Overall Reactions: I'm impressed with this game. Visually, it's awesome. There are no complaints there. The new physics make it look great and the punches come off with genuine speeds. No more fast/fast/awkwardly slow. The simplified D means blocking isn't as much a part of the game as punching as with FNR3. I like that, my brother did not. You have to push/clinch/move/fight your way out of bad situations, rather than just blocking until the other guy gets tired.
I like the game a lot. It has more fighters, career mode is better, but most importantly It looks like real boxing. Not the Round 3 making a game out of boxing game play. This game is more FIFA and less Madden in that anyone can pick it up and play with a 10 second lesson. It favors the guys who were aggressive in FNR3 and will frustrate the guys who depended on blocking. With the realistic physics, someone who knows what they are doing and how to set up punches can really do damage.
I'm still getting into it but wanted to take a break to share with the rest of the readers at Bad Left Hook. It's worth getting if you didn't like the complications for R3 and wanted more aggressive, movement-based boxing or just want to have fun with your buddies. If you got really into R3, rent it because you may not like the changes.
9/10

Awesome
FNR 4 is definitely on my buy list come July. Having said that, I’ve read elsewhere that the game pales in comparison to UFC Unleashed. True?

i probably won’t be buying FNR4 anytime soon. i ain’t got no money :(

Considering UFC Unleashed is a damn joke
that can devolve into trading headkicks. Its guaranteed to be better.

UFC Undisputed is a really really good game. Get better at it so you don’t devolve into trading headlocks. ;)

Eh I never much liked it to begin with
The ground game isn’t in depth enough for me though it would be very hard to translate accurately. And the standup is rockem sockem robots compared to Fight Night
Gimme 1 round!

My other point is
If you LAND a headkick in the fight… It should be GAME OVER. There is only 1 guy i’ve ever seen take a flush head kick and walk through it and that was Mark Hunt. In that game you can land 3 in a row and the other dude is still coming… dum

Knockouts come easier?
That’s scary, considering it was close to impossible to win by decision in FNR3. I hope by that you mean it’s more accurate in terms of how guys get knocked out though (i.e., one punch or a series of punches can do it, and accumulated damage doesn’t necessarily mean a knockdown).
The game features guys who are not huge names yet.
Or in the case of Billy Dib, huge names never.
BTW, what console do you have this for? And if it’s for the PS3, please please PLEASE tell me that it doesn’t use the stupid sixaxis controls. This is completely for personal reasons – I generally only play video games while on an exercise bike, so it screws things up when you need to use sixaxis.

I got it for 360
and the controls are pretty much the same.

as for the knock outs, it can be on one good punch or you get worn down. Getting rocked isnt super slow motion anymore. When you are out of it though, there is an annoying high pitched ringing in your ears noise that I could do without. I think with KOs, they come easier because the get up game is harder. Its not just get the sticks in the circle any more. Overall though, its a video game, so there is more action.

Darn, I liked the sticks control
I’m old, and I only get time to play games a few times a month. Most of the new games have too many buttons for me to remember.

oh its got the sticks, but the D is reduced to just up and down, not block left high… etc. You do more with leaning.

Gotcha
I think that’s a little better. The ‘parry’ maneuver was pretty unrealistic.
I’m just hoping they got the actual science of knockdowns right, but it sounds like they’re still off. I mean, in real life, you usually don’t see knockouts because someone gets grinded down over the course of a fight, and then it takes 4 or 5 KDs to finish them off. Usually, they get caught by a good punch or three, which buzzes them, and then the KD is almost always from a head shot. Body shot KDs are usually of the one punch variety, and in FNR3 it was way too easy to knock someone down with a body punch. And then, depending on the nature of the knockdown, the fighter should be a bit more compromised when they get up from it, at least some of the time.

actually you can get buzzed with just two or three fights. my cousin threw it down with me Pac (me) vs Mosley (him), he actually knocked me down with a perfect straight left 5 seconds into the fight. I got up backed off till my health was at least a little close i countered him with a haymaker uppercut which automatically made him dazed. great game

Good game..
It’s a great game without a doubt.
It’s a lot of fun to play in general and it does reward intelligent timing. if you time your punches well you can do a lot of damage to your opponent.
Running through the legacy mode though the difficilty goes from easy to insanely difficult like somebody flipped a switch. There doesnt seem to be much middle ground there.
It also heavily favours taller out fighters. Being an in fighter in the game makes your job significantly more difficult by all standards.
Still about an 8.5/10 is appropriate.

I'm obsessed with the game
But I disagree with a couple things.
1) I actually got knocked out by a flash knock out
2) Knockouts come easier – I don’t think so at all. They give you an easier time to recover in this game as soon as your dazed.
My favorite part about the game is that they have the styles spot on. If you’re Gamboa, be ready to basically have no chin. If you’re my favorite, Winky . . . It’s gonna be hella hard for you to get through the defense. It’s so great.
Just wish people like Floyd Joy, Berto, Williams, BHop and even De La Hoya were in the game

flash KO where you have to do the cock it back with the stick or just a haymaker one hit KO?
I think KOs come quicker because clean shots seem to do more damage putting you in the red, where as in FNR3 you have to pick em apart for several rounds landing tons of clean blows.

DLC
I know Berto said he’d be available to download at a later date. Does anyone else know who will be downloadable?

No idea
But I’m sure plenty of guys will do it, at least the ones who don’t want a huge set fee. It’s an easy way to get a quick revenue stream.

Photo Game Face
is…iffy. You have to have a PERFECT picture and set the little markers perfectly for it to come out looking anything like you. When I made my first one, I showed it to two people. I thought I looked asian, a girl I’m seeing said I looked slightly African, and my friend said I looked Mexican. Granted, the picture I used was kinda fuzzy because it was from my phone.
As for the game itself, it’s fun. It’s pretty tough, I just got DOMINATED by that Amin Ask-whatever from Finland (random addition, by the way). He took my health and stamina down to like 1/3 and my punches didn’t even seem to faze him. I like the de-emphasis on haymakers, I don’t even use them because they take so long to do. Kinda weird that ODLH isn’t in the game, considering he’s in the EA commercial.
Boxing is like jazz. The better it is, the less people appreciate it.

I was so hyped for this game but when I got my demo code for the preorder and played it I hated it. I’ll be waiting for the Title Update.

KO's are easier?
I started a legacy w/ Kelly Pavlik… I’m 20 fights into my career, I’m 19-1 and I’ve only managed to get 3 KO’s. Every fight goes the distance. Are there keys or tips to capitilizing on the counter punches that send them into a daze? The computer gets a lot more counter punches than I do.

I actually thought KOs seemed a bit harder to come by, too. Maybe I’m just not good (that’s probably it), but my friend and I did go to a 10-round decision with no knockdowns. I was using Pernell Whitaker and he used Chico Corrales.

I know its all about capitalizing on the counter punches to stun your opponent but the moment I go in for the kill…. the other guy clinches me and he recovers. Guess I’m not all that good either… lol

yeah it is tougher. i used to tear my opponents apart when i was fighting tomato cans, but as i was stepping up i ended up getting 9 or 10 round KOs. it is harder, but its not impossibly hard to KO someone.

I created Wlady Klitschko
I’m 9-0 w/ 8 ko’s. I’ve figured it out, the signature punch being the leading uppercut has helped out a lot. I guess it just goes to show that it really depends on the style of boxer you use.
I just really hate Kelly Pavlik’s signature punch, that lil helicopter uppercut is too time consuming to pull off and its always blocked.

Commentators during fight...
Or more precisely after the fight…
I won UD 100-90 on two cards and 99-91 on the third card.
Teddy Atlas says, “… I had it closer, I had it as a split decision.”
How does one “judge” score it as a SD?
Just thought that was odd.

That plus Joe and Teddy pointing out my fighter has zero hand speed all the time yet I have yet to have a fight go past the 6th round since I went to a legitimate split decision w/ Jermain Taylor… lol.
