I'm watching Latin Fury
Then going home to watch my DVR’s recordings of Abraham and Ortiz
Anyone else watching PPV?
nah
Mismatches and snoozers. Any other night I’d order it, but good stuff on SHO/HBO.

feel free
It’s a live show and I’m interested.

are you really concerned with it?
Because we’re going to run results right after everything’s done. Just a heads-up.

Abraham-Oral R1
if my typing is shit for this fight, it’s because I’m waiting on a real keyboard. So I apologize.
Abraham has his gloves up, working a jab, Oral trying to jab back, trying to throw some power shots but just can’t break the D early, as no one would expect him to. They’re talking about Abraham giving away rounds, which I don’t think is accurate. Oral working more, staying aggressive, and not getting in to let Abraham wail on him. Fairly close round, no big shots really, and I give it to Oral on activity. If Arthur had landed a few good shots he wins this round.
Oral 10-9
Abraham-Oral R2
Abraham with a left hook to the body. Oral is staying at a really good distance. Nice counter right from Oral as AA attempts to bang to the body. A minute left in the round and another close one so far. I do quite like what Oral is doing, but that lingering thought that AA is just waiting for his moment is there. This is pretty standard Abraham stuff. Left hook Abraham, right missed by Oral. Good counter by Oral, and he chases Arthur down at the end of the round.
Oral 10-9
Oral 20—18
Abraham-Oral R3
Left hook Abraham, Oral sneaks a counter shot in. He’s done that quite well so far. I’m moderately impressed by Oral. Arthur misses an overhand right. Oral dropping his hands some now. Arthur’s still high high high. Left hook Abraham and right hand counter by Oral at the same time. Oral backs him down a little bit again. He’s really matching up nicely so far, but here comes Arthur with the power shots. Another close round, think Arthur eked this one out.
Abraham 10-9
Oral 29-28
Abaham-Oral R4
Oral out throwing power shots, blocked. Oral throwing somewhat wilder this round, and Abraham comes back with a wild miss of his own. Now they’re throwing leather! Abraham crowding, hammering to the body, and they are really starting to trade purposeful shots. This is turning into a good little fight. Left hook Abraham. Oral getting hammered now! Abrhaam unloading AND DOWN GOES ORAL! He’s up and will fight on. 30 seconds left. Arthur storming! Big right lands! Oral still coming back at him! BIG RIGHT ABRAHAM! Oral doing NO clinching! FLUSH COMBO! Wow! HUGE round for Arthur!
Abraham 10-8
Abraham 38-37
Abraham-Oral R5
Oral jabbing, but THER’ES A — oh, nope, stumble. And a good call. hey, I get excited. Oral seems nervy. Big shot Arthur. He’s taking over in a huge way. HUGE right just doesn’t land flush for Abraham. Jabs from Oral. He needs to find something more to do. Arthur’s waiting for his jabs to end and then pouncing. Arthur with a right. Jabs from Arthur, and then he rocks him again. This is now all Arthur. Left hook Oral! Crowd silenced by that one. Arthur looked like he felt that one. Flush right by Arthur. And another. He’s just eating that shot. God bless Oral, he keeps coming.
Abraham 10-9
Abraham 48-46
I'm saying go ahead
So if anyone doesn’t want “spoilers” of the Top Rank PPV, tune out now.

by Scott Christ on Jun 27, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions
typical abraham fight
gets beat up for a couple rounds then wakes up beats dudes into submission.
oral is a tough dude though.
Abraham-Oral R6
Oral with a long right. Oral is staying in there, but he’s clearly overmatched. Damn but he’s making it fun. Abraham right hand, and down goes Oral again!
He’s OK, though. And on he fights. Oral coming forward, throwing, just not finding Arthur anymore. Right hand does land.
Abraham 10-8
Abraham 58-54
He always wants another round. Crazy bastard.
by Scott Christ on Jun 27, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Abraham-Oral R7
Oral trying to throw combinations. Boy, I’m becoming a fan of this dude. He will not back off. He’s throwing everything he can to try and break Arthur’s D. Good combos, smart punching. Abraham’s just a brick wall defensively. Arthur not doing much at all this round, kinda taking it off. Oral throwing and throwing, not landing a lot, but Arthur just isn’t doing anything.
Oral 10-9
Abraham 67-64
Abraham-Oral R8
Abraham with good shots, Oral just keeps coming back. This is a fun fight, even if fairly wide with the knockdowns. Abraham showing more offense again, but still not opening up like he did before. Nevermind, there goes Abraham throwing the big bombs. Oral catches him a bit off balance. Abraham’s hands go low. Left hook Arthur. Swings another one. Abraham with another good combo near the round’s end. He steals this round on big shots.
Abraham 10-9
Abraham 77-73
Abraham-Oral R9
Abraham coming out with his gloves high again. Oral still trying to work off the jab. Probably way too late for that to turn out, but he’s stealing another round here as Arthur just isn’t doing a lot again. There’s a big flurry of battering shots. Abraham wailing on him now. Oral’s hands need to get up. Body shots then upstairs from Arthur. Right hand Arthur. And more big shots! Arthur takes the round wide with that last minute beating.
Abraham 10-9
Abraham 87-82
Abraham-Oral R10
Left hand Arthur lands upstairs. Right hands thuds. Oral is hurting now. And he goes down on a left hook, half taking a knee. Just quit, Mahir.
But he does not.
Abraham going for it. Right hand to the body, down to a knee. Oral’s done.
But he will fight on. Why?
Ref warns him. No three KD rule. Down again! Oral up again. Referee counts, he’s up. And fighting on — nope, corner stops it. Good call, guys.
Arthur Abraham TKO-10
would be nice if abraham fought
the likes of pavlik, froch, kessler, bika, andrade, etc.. and quit beating up on these limited and overmatched europeans. hes not getting any younger.

Question:
Why is Ortiz listed as being from CA? Isn’t he a Kansas guy?
(I’m a Kansas guy, why I’m asking)

That was the big deal for this fight. Arce finally getting a guy that might teach him how to handle a left-hander. I don’t think you’re changing his spots much but Arum was right. He looks like he doesn’t know how to fight a lefty at all.

weights tonight
Ortiz 152
Maidana 149
Really looking forward to this. Has explosive written all over it.
no
Fights aren’t really big enough for picks, plus I don’t think everyone has seen Maidana, and I’ve really only seen the Kotelnik fight myself. I mean I’ve seen YouTube clips.
by Scott Christ on Jun 27, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah so my favorite soccer team sucks tonight (down 2-0 at the half)
Might as well catch the fight.
I’m going with Ortiz TKO 11. I have no idea or decent info on Maidana.
Andy Reid is the only coach in NFL history that uses the pass to set up the pass.
Arce with what looked like a no look hard over the top right KO in the 3rd
Nacho hasn’t changed much about him at all
Ortiz-Maidana R1
Maidana swarms after Ortiz misses a lead left, but nothing lands. Maidana leads with a right. They’re gonna rumble, boys. Ortiz with a right hook, Maidana with a left hook. They’re going in bursts. Right to the body by Maidana. Maidana throwing wild shots, and a BIG right by Maidana, but Ortiz comes back. ORTIZ WITH A COUNTER RIGHT, DOWN GOES MAIDANA!
This is gonna be fun for as long as it lasts.
HUGE RIGHT MAIDANA, DOWN GOES ORTIZ!!!!! He’s hurt, man.
Ortiz trying to clinch, not suceeding. Now Ortiz fires back! 30 seconds to go. Huge right Maidana clips Ortiz. My God. Ortiz flurrying! My God this is a fight. WOO BOY!!!!!!!
Wow, how the hell do you score that?
10-10
Yeah I did it.
I just hope this fight makes it a 6 rounds.
I’ll be very happy with 6 rounds of this.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Ortiz-Maidana R2
They’re coming out throwing again. Maidana charging, Ortiz trying to make him miss and grab up. Good idea probably. Maidana’s power is definitely real. Looping right by Maidana. And they connect with simultaneous power shots! This is fuckin’ FUN. Both guys fighting sort of tense in a way, but then they just let loose. Just two guys throwing power shots in bunches. Ortiz hanging on some more. It’s smart, and I can’t fault him.
Heads may have just clashed. Yup. No blood though.
Ortiz to the body, then misses a huge left upstairs, and here THEY GO! MAIDANA CAUGHT WITH A RIGHT HOOK AND DOWN! Maidana pops right up. Ortiz was hurt. This is awesome.
Ortiz storming! 10 seconds to go! Ortiz flurrying, Miadana fighting back AND DOWN GOES MAIDANA AGAIN! He’s up and getting the count. Round ends. WOW!!!
Ortiz 10-7
Ortiz 20-17
I don't care
It can’t live up to this.

20-17 Ortiz

no defense
These shots are great shots and he’s right back up every time.
by Scott Christ on Jun 27, 2009 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Ortiz-Maidana R3
Maidana takes his time on the stool.
Good right by Maidana. Ortiz flurrying again, good shots. And they’re really getting nasty inside. Maidana with a right on the break. Hard right Maidana! Ortiz ducking, dodging, doing what he can. If you like defense, this is not your fight. If you like wars, this is for you.
They’re throwing big leather after a brief lull again. Maidana barely missed with another huge right hand. Lead right by Ortiz doesn’t find a home. Ortiz looking more energetic, but I think Maidana sneaks this round with better shots.
Maidana 10-9
Ortiz 29-27
30-26 Ortiz but who cares? We know this ain't going the distance.
Andy Reid is the only coach in NFL history that uses the pass to set up the pass.
Ortiz-Maidana R4
Hurrld gave the last round to Ortiz. Clubbing right by Maidana. Ortiz with a hard left as they’re tied up. Nasty lead left by Ortiz. Woof, that was a shot. Another hard left lands as Maidana makes his way in. Marcos has really slowed down. His speed surprised me early on, but he’s back to what I expected now. He’s not SLOW, he’s just not even close to as quick as Ortiz. And he’s not quick period. He’s average.
Maidana pins Ortiz in the corner, but gets little done. Apparently they’ve landed a combined 3/48 jabs so far.
Right hand Maidana doesn’t quite get there. Clinching is coming into the fight and Maidana looks worn out. Maidana backs himself into the ropes just before the bell.
Ortiz 10-9
Ortiz 39-36
Sugar Shane is in attendance
This is a FOTY candidate, right now. Amazing action.
Andy Reid is the only coach in NFL history that uses the pass to set up the pass.
Ortiz-Maidana R5
Hurrld gave the last round to Maidana. OK, Jim!
Ortiz throwing big shots, and starting to overwhelm Maidana with speed even when he’s missing. Maidana digging to the body while they’re tied up. Maidana warned about punching to the back of the head. Double right hook by Ortiz. He’s really taking over with pure skill. Ortiz hit with a left hook, but here he comes back storming! THEY’RE TRADING BIG BOMBS! Ortiz is cut outside his left. Shane Mosley is losing it in the front row. This is great.
Right hand Maidana. BIG SNEAKY RIGHT BY MAIDANA! Wow that was vicious. HUGE RIGHT MAIDANA! Wow! Round ends and Ortiz is lucky it did.
Maidana 10-9
Ortiz 48-46
That was an interesting round.
Gotta go Maidana. 10-9
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Ortiz-Maidana R6
Maidana storms out with a right. Ortiz is hurt. He’s hurt. Another right. Ortiz stuck in the corner now. And another right. And another. Maidana just FIRING! Ortiz goes down! He’s hurt. This won’t last long.
Ortiz looks like he wants to quit.
They’re gonna check his cut. IT IS OVER!
Marcos Maidana TKO-6
IT'S OVER!! OH MY GOODNESS!!
Andy Reid is the only coach in NFL history that uses the pass to set up the pass.
to be fair-
His left eye is nasty and is right eye is cut. I’d be amazed if that guy can see anything.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
He quit though. There is something to that. I’m not saying it makes him a turd.

I think for a guy who has been told that he is best at the thing has been doing all his life( aka survive), it is scary to realize that your best just isn’t good enough to last the 12 rounds.

Boy Ortiz is fun to watch but
I think Ortiz’s stock takes a huge drop tonight. He had him down 3 times and couldn’t finish him.
Meanwhile Maidana is an amazing puncher.
Andy Reid is the only coach in NFL history that uses the pass to set up the pass.
while it does
maybe not as much as you think in the immediate aftermath. People will always want to see fights like that, so its not all bad. He just needs to get back on the horse and get some good wins
Can we stop the unwarranted hype on Ortiz now? Kid is a bum. Like most kids from Oxnard, he’s a quitter.
I went to High School in Oxnard. I know the mindset of those kids. When put into the pressure cooker, they quit. That’s all they’re used to.

by schraubd on Jun 27, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
Does it matter? To paint a brush over an entire town (or even HS) is assholery of the highest caliber. 200,000 people live in that town, and you feel privileged to shit on them all. I’m calling grade A bull shit.
Call it what you want, but I call it like I see it. Having spent four years in that town, having friends that still live there, going there all the time due to the fact that I have business there sometimes, and living 15 minutes from there. I think I know more about what goes on in that city, and the mentality of that city, than you do. So, unless you’ve been there, don’t talk to me like I don’t know what I’m talking about. Ortiz just stereotyped that city even worse than it already was.

I'd imagine that if he made it through his mom and dad leaving him,

Agreed 100%
I thought that was him saying this game isn’t for me.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
He did face a guy who has world class power…
You know… he made not excuses… but the fact that when he knew his best wasn’t enough to win, he folded.
I always think of Marquez when he fought Pacman the 1st time around…. I honestly thought he was done and I think many did so as well but he has something in him that enabled him to survive the fight.
It is special breed of fighters that can do that… and Ortiz isn’t in that type of class. Nothing wrong but perhaps many just have to lower our expectations of fighters until they prove that they are the creme of the crop.

Remember, Golden Boy swiped Ortiz from Top Rank after Top Rank developed Ortiz to a certain point. Maybe if Ortiz had stayed with Top Rank, the matching making might have been different? Maybe Golden Boy will now see the value in carefully developing fighters?

It’s not like Ortiz wasn’t ready for this step. He was at the stage where he should be fighting bouts like this. He just happened to lose.
I’m not saying Ortiz wasn’t ready for this level of competition, I just question if Maindana was the fighter he should’ve stepped up against. I’ve noticed that Top Rank is careful about matching up styles and maybe they wouldn’t have chosen Maindana. Maybe they would have chosen an opponent at this level that matched up better stylistically. Just saying that Top Rank seems to be more careful about moving prospects.

They put Cotto vs the very dangerous Ricardo Torres when Cotto was still a prospect and with questions about his chin.
I think what we should take out of this fight this was the Cotto/Torres fight of this year… the only thing is that Torres won this time out instead of the blue chip prospect that is supposed to be the next big thing.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
It was supposed to be Andriy Kotelnik, who pulled out to fight Khan and now looks like he might pull out of that. Maidana was available and Ortiz agreed, which was pretty ballsy.
