Friday Night Fights Open Thread
No superstars fighting tonight, but we do get two relatively even-matched fights involving three contenders and a prospect. Matt "Too Smooth" Godfrey, coming off a recent loss to Rudolf Kraj in a title eliminator, as well as a victory over Emmanuel Nwodo, takes on Shawn Hawk, the undefeated Sioux cruiserweight prospect. On the undercard, Shaun George, who nobody's been willing to go near since he dominated Chris Byrd, faces off against Chris Henry, who's coming off a close loss to Adrian Diaconu in a title fight and a slightly wider loss to top 10 light heavyweight Yusef Mack. The winner of either fight may see himself enter the top 10, if they win convincingly.
In other results around the boxing globe, Lee Haskins beat Ross Burkinshaw to win the Commonwealth super flyweight title. Also, former longtime minimumweight titlist Ratanpol Sor Vorapin likely saw the end of his career, getting knocked out by 5-1-2 Joel Rafols.

Anyway, not sure how much I’ll RBR this one. Unlike my last 10 or so Fridays, my GF is actually in town today.

Henry vs. George, round 1
Not doing a straight up RBR, but a few highlights.
Henry has come storming out, very aggressive, but basically is plodding. George has the obvious speed advantage, and he catches Henry with a nice uppercut that staggers Henry. He has Henry stumbling around a bit, but George is just tagging Henry at will. George isn’t a knockout puncher, but he’s really hurting Henry here. Henry seems completely out of it, even though he has his legs back.
Henry looked goos for about a minute, but George completely dominated from that point forward.
George 10-9

George-Henry Round 2
Henry’s coming forward again, but still doesn’t completely have his legs back. Joe says that Henry only landed 2 punches in the last two minutes of the last round.
Henry’s coming forward again, and completely walks into a big right hand, as if he didn’t even see it. Henry’s getting in close and trying to throw some combos, but he really doesn’t land anything. George just shells up, and Henry can’t seem to find the holes. Once George works his way back to the outside, it’s just a matter of Henry walking into his punches again. Finally, Henry is landing a number of punches on the inside, and George isn’t really doing too much of anything. Tough round to score – Henry was a lot more active and was the aggressor, but George still landed the more effective shots and was good on defense. I’ll go with George though, for landing that one bomb.
20-18 George. I don’t necessarily disagree with 20-17.

George-Henry 3
Henry is still coming forward. At this point, he completely has his legs back, and he’s throwing punches that George is basically ducking under. One minute into the round, and George still hasn’t thrown a punch. He finally throws one, and Henry catches him dipping in. George is now hugging when Henry gets on the inside. Two minutes in, and George has maybe thrown 5 punches. George just isn’t bringing it to Henry at ALL. Henry’s being more cautious, but George is doing NOTHING. Henry with a couple of nice body shots, and he nails George with a huge right hand that stuns George as the bell rings.
Clear Henry round. I didn’t give George 10-8 in the first, so I’m not giving it to Henry here, but I wouldn’t argue. George did jack shit and got rocked.
29-28 George.

George-Henry 4
Henry coming forward, and George seems to be out of gas or something. He’s holding his hands down now, while Henry looks as spry as ever. George is halfway to running around the ring away from Henry, but now he’s dancing a bit. I can’t help but feel like Henry wouldn’t be able to do this if George actually threw, because when he throws, he can’t miss. Two minutes in, and he’s thrown about 5 punches. Henry is at least coming forward and being slightly more effective with his aggressiveness. George finally lands a punch, but it doesn’t do anything to Henry. Now Henry’s halfway showboating, trying to taunt George into actually fighting. Even fight now, but all the momentum is on Henry’s side.
28-28

WTF is up with George and his complete unwillingness to throw after the first round? I’m watching the fight with some friends who are pretty casual fans and hadn’t heard of any of these guys. They’re all howling about George “throwing the fight.”
Not likely, but I can see why they think this. Bizarre.

Mackey vs. Ennis Jr. R1
Ennis is the Philly boy so it’s a partisan crowd.
Both guys going to the body a lot and Ennis landed a sharp right hook with 1 minute left in the round. Most of Mackey’s shots are being blocked and we’ve got a clash of heads. It’s an orthodox vs. southpaw.
I won’t even bother to score the fight.

A right hand staggers Mackey and Ennis goes on the attack. Down goes Mackey who gets up and Mackey is the aggressor getting Ennis against the ropes.
Looks like Mackey wasn’t as hurt as first thought after the knockdown. Ennis thinks this is football with his constant tackle attempts.

Sure BJ, whatever you say.

They mention Godfrey vs. Flores
I would comment on that, but I just fell asleep.

Ugh
Frustrating as hell. Hawk finally catches Godfrey in the 10th, knocks him down (but was incorrectly ruled a slip), and then he doesn’t throw punches while Godfrey is still wobbly. Fight is over. What crowd is left boos. Godfrey surely won a wide decision, but he’s not making it any easier on himself as far as getting big fights. First, he (like Flores) pussed out of a match for THE cruiserweight championship of the world against Tomasz Adamek, now he turns out this stinker.
Seriously, “fighters” like Godfrey and Flores don’t deserve to make it onto TV and get big fights.

Final scores
99-91
97-93
98-92
Matt Godfrey
Tessitore mentions that Godfrey says “he doesn’t care about the money, he just wants to fight for a title.” Yeah, that’s why he fought Shawn Hawk tonight instead of Tomasz Adamek tomorrow. I realize $75K isn’t huge money, but it’s more than he made for this fight, and it would have gotten him on Showtime.

Gotta agree with you brick. Flores also turned down the eliminator that Cunningham is in tomorrow that would have got him a shot at Adamek as well.
Both of these guys wish they could fight as well as they could talk. The height of comedy was Flores saying that it was time for Godfrey to “step on the gas”. Something Flores has never done in his life.
The cruiserweights are so watered down. The only fight that matters is Adamek-Cunningham II.
