Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Joseph Agbeko v. Vic Darchinyan
Tonight's round-by-round of Agbeko-Darchinyan is dedicated to the memory of Arturo Gatti. May you rest in peace, "Thunder."

For those who missed it in the schedule
There’s another very good fight on tonight. At 11 pm, ESPN Deportes will be airing Jorge Solis vs. Cristobal Cruz. I may stick around and RBR that one after Agbeko-Darchinyan. It should also be a banger.

BTW, Gevor is dominating Sturm so far

Gevor vs. Sturm round 4
Gevor likely won the first three rounds, although German TV gave the first round to Sturm.
Basically, Gevor has just been plowing forward, keeping his head up against Sturm and constantly punishing the body. When he throws to the head, Sturm blocks it, but Sturm looks very uncomfortable with Gevor up close and is barely throwing punches.
40-36 Gevor
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Sturm vs. Gevor Round 5
More of the same so far. The ref seems to be doing everything in his power to help Sturm, breaking up the fighters even when nobody’s holding. Gevor’s output has slowed some, and Sturm is able to find the body as well a bit. Still, Gevor is just completely controlling the action and forcing Sturm to fight his fight. Not a lot of clean blows landed, but I give Gevor this round again, in good part on being the aggressor and his ring generalship.
50-45 Gevor
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Round 6
Gevor picks up the workrate again, and is just completely imposing himself on Sturm. Sturm better hope that Gevor tires out quickly, but Sturm isn’t the knockout puncher that Abraham is.
This ref is complete bullshit, but every time he breaks them up, Gevor gets right back on the inside. Sturm isn’t using his jab well to keep Gevor off of him.
60-54 Gevor

FWIW
German online voting has the fight even.

Round 7
Best back and forth action of the fight so far. Gevor started taking a step back and nailing Sturm with the uppercut. After finding success on the outside as well, he fought out at a distance, and the two of them traded a number of combos. However, Gevor landed a number of them that really snapped Sturm’s head back. Another Gevor round. I don’t know what fight the German public is watching.
70-63 Gevor.

Is there an online ZDF feed?
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
No, stream
Justin told me about the TV
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Roudn 8
Gevor starts on the outside again, and throws about 20 jabs in a row without Sturm responding. Sturm then nails Gevor with a good combo, and Gevor comes back inside. This time, Sturm is prepared, and nails Gevor with the uppercut. While Gevor probably threw 3 times as many punches that round, I think Sturm landed the more effective ones.
79-73 Gevor
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Round 9
Sturm picked up his workrate this round, and Gevor has slowed down some. Gevor’s still throwing more punches, but Sturm’s punches have a lot more snap to them. First clear Sturm round of the fight.
88-83 Gevor

"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Yeah, it's ridiculous
Online scoring has it even
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Round 10
Gevor got back on the inside again and pretty much completely dominated the round. Sturm landed two mini-flurries that made the crowd go crazy, but they didn’t seem to have any effect on Gevor. Based on the crowd noise, the stupid German judges will probably give that round to Sturm, but it was a dominant round by Gevor.
98-92 Gevor
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Round 11
Another dominant Gevor round. He had Sturm pinned in a corner for about 30 seconds, landed three uppercuts that snapped Sturm’s head back and seemed to have Sturm completely stunned for a while. German broadcasters still give the round to Sturm. I smell a robbery coming.
108-101 Gevor
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
BTW, no punchstats
But I wouldn’t be surprised if Gevor is averaging 90 punches a round
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Round 12
Gevor looks like he’s about to get on his horse, but he bullrushes in and lands about 15 unanswered body punches. After that, both guys seem pretty content to just jab from the outside. Gevor round, but I could go either way.
118-110 Gevor
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
I would say that there's an excuse if Sturm wins
But there really isn’t. He wasn’t even the more accurate puncher. Gevor had the higher workrate, Gevor controlled the ring, Gevor landed the harder shots, and both guys did a good job of blocking most of his opponent’s punches. I don’t know what fight the Germans were watching, but this should be a blowout by Gevor.
German TV has it 117-111 Sturm

It sort of gives me pause about one of the things I used to criticize Calzaghe about… that he wouldn’t fight the pretender Sturm (or Beyer, for that matter). I still believe its a matter of pride to not let bozos call themselves “champions” in our division, but Joe’s calculation that he would’ve had to put Ottke on press row to win was probably correct. Hell, even then they might have called the KO a “foul.”
RIP Thunder… christ almighty, what a shame.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."
-- Randall 'Tex' Cobb
Honestly, how do judges in Germany get it wrong so consistently? It’s obnoxious. I would never fight there if I wasn’t European.
Boxing is like jazz. The better it is, the less people appreciate it.
-George Foreman
The judges were probably provided by the WBA, which is consistently horrible with officiating(all ABC’s are terrible in this regard). Then they were probably wined and dined and “incentivized” by the promoter or somebody close to the promoter in order to massage the numbers for the bigger named fighter. What I don’t get though, aren’t Ghevor and Sturm promoted by the same promoter?
Yes, same promoter
But there’s a LOT more money in Sturm than Gevor. Sturm is inexplicably popular in Germany, and his fights draw big numbers. Gevor is a no-name with some good fights but no fanbase.

I wonder if the Bobfather is involved on some level because Pavlik-Ghevor would not be as marketable as Pavlik-Sturm.
Pavlik-Gevor wouldn't have happened
If Gevor had won, you could pretty much guarantee a rematch.

Selcuk Aydin TKO-9 Jackson Bonsu
I guess that puts Aydin and his sub-Hatton arms in the welterweight top ten.
He's squarely in the third tier
Small second tier in the weight class though. Just Berto and Collazo, IMO. Aydin’s right there with Rodriguez, Hlatswayo, Jackiewicz and the like.

Ivan Kirpa UD-12 Miki Rodriguez
This makes Kirpa (24-1, 15 KO) the mandatory for Andre Berto’s WBC welterweight title. That’s right — the WBC put on a fight and sanctioned it as an eliminator, with a possible result being Berto-Rodriguez II.

DeMarco-Adjaho R1
I’m really stunned that Showtime didn’t mention Arturo Gatti before the fights have started.
Stiff jab from DeMarco. Both are pawing and the boo birds are out in a major way. Getting the feeling that maybe the undercard wasn’t so exciting? Wow, zero action through the first half of the round.
Straight left by DeMarco. When he throws, he’s landing. DeMarco staggers Adjaho on a left hand, and Adjaho backs off. Slow round, but an easy and wide DeMarco round for sure.
DeMarco 10-9
Adjaho 10-9
His knees buckled because he was off balance. It would have been a legitimate KD had he fallen, but Adjaho won the round other than that one punch.

DeMarco-Adjaho R2
There’s a good little rush by Adjaho. DeMarco awkwardly backs away from another mini charge. Long right from Adjaho. DeMarco is now doing nothing. Adjaho has totally dominated what is another slow, ugly, dull round. No one’s landing much of anything square or hard. Adjaho’s jabbing a little but eh.
Adjaho 10-9
19-19
20-18 Adjaho
But I can’t help but feel like DeMarco could take the fight over if he decides to be just a bit more aggressive.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
We don’t know what Cunningham’s fight looked like, but could it have been worse than this has started?

Braithwaite only has a puncher's chancce
And Cunningham has a shaky chin. I’ll bet it was a pretty boring fight with Cunningham backpedaling most of the way.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
DeMarco-Adjaho R3
Adjaho with some rights, DeMarco looks like maybe he’s ready to fight a little. Right by Adjaho just clips DeMarco’s chin. Left hook does the same. DeMarco seems mentally absent. Adjaho with another straight right, and then a long right isn’t quite home. This is a really boring fight. I mean there’s no other way to put it. DeMarco is so awkward against a guy his own height.
Adjaho 10-9
Adjaho 29-28
"He's known as a brawler"
Obviously Gus Johnson has only seen the Kid diamond fight. He’s usually boring like this.
Anyway, Adjaho 30-27. Closer round though. DeMarco needs to start putting punches together.

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
DeMarco-Adjaho R4
DeMarco starting to taking over a bit in the first half of this round, getting a little more aggressive, and he needs to do that. Adjaho is showboating when he’s getting hit, which I never think is a good sign. DeMarco has him on the ropes, Adjaho trying to play possum perhaps. DeMarco round as Adjaho never gets untracked.
DeMarco 10-9
38-38
DeMarco round
I had it close, and thought he stole it with the best punch of the round at the very end. Both guys are hitting more air than anything though.

DeMarco-Adjaho R5
This is a fuck ugly fight. It’s not even so insanely boring now because they’re throwing, it’s just sloppy and both guys are having trouble in there. Neither of them look like they wouldn’t get creamed by Valero in short order. DeMarco with some big shots, both right and left hands. HERE COMES ADJAHO with a charge, but DeMarco eats it and moves on. Well, hey, it’s heating up.
Adjaho throwing rights with VICIOUS intent, but only one of three even sorta lands. DeMarco with some lefts, countered by a right. Easily the round’s best fight. Business is picking up.
Adjaho 10-9
Adjaoho 48-47
Adjaho round
But I could go either way. The most effective punches were landed by DeMarco, but Adjaho had more effective exchanges
49-46 Adjaho
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
DeMarco-Adjaho R6
DeMarco backing Adjaho down again, and a straight left really catches him with about a minute left. This is a tough fight to gauge so far. There are moments where both look ADJAHO DRILLED WITH A LEFT HAND! ADJAHO HANGS ON! Man, good defensive work by Adjaho there. He got POPPED! Adjaho trying to move around, throwing goofy ass punches now, trying to be cool, and he trips and freaks out. Now DeMarco almost falls on his ass. Man what a weird round.
DeMarco 10-9
57-57
What I was saying is that there are moments when both look like they could totally take over, but then neither does.
by Scott Christ on Jul 11, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
DeMarco-Adjaho R7
Adjaho is starting to lose his way, I think. DeMarco is really throwing big combos whenever he can, and even though he’s not doing much in terms of really clean, effective punching, he’s looking better now. Adjaho is a tricky fig defensively though. Adjaho with a left hook. 10 seconds in a stealable round. Here comes DeMarco with two big lefts to seal it.
DeMarco 10-9
DeMarco 67-66
Adjaho seems to be building up his confidence
I don’t know if that\’s a good thing or a bad thing for him though. If he gets too cocky, he might get caught. Good round for Adjaho though.
68-65 Adjaho

DeMarco-Adjaho R8
Adjaho throwing leather early in the round, and backing DeMarco down. Adjaho coming with rights and lefts, and both hands are landing. DeMarco wobbled! Adjaho pouring it on! IT’S A FUCKING FIREFIGHT NOW! ADJAHO BACKED DOWN! Well this got good fast, huh?
Adjaho backing down and wobbling! Goddamn it, this fight is just plain weird. Adjaho might be gassing out. Now they’re back to the waiting game in the second half of the round. Big left hand by DeMarco! Uppercut from Adjaho in return.
That was a fun round.
DeMarco 10-9
DeMarco 77-75
Big round for DeMarco
Adjaho was dominating early, hurt DeMarco, then DeMarco countered back with something that hurt Adjaho worse than DeMarco had been hurt. Just annoying though. Had DeMarco kept on the pressure, he could have scored a KO.

Uppercut from DeMarco, then some combos. Adjaho is out of rhythm offensively now. Tough round to score, though, because DeMarco isn’t exactly landing a lot and Adjaho is arguably controlling the pace. Rights from Adjaho. Pawing left from DeMarco. Adjaho is hurt — he takes a knee and he’s trying to say … I don’t know, but he’s not getting up.

Agbeko-Darchinyan R1
Darchinyan darts over to Agbeko’s corner. Darchinyan with a popping right hook, Agbeko throws a left hook back. Neither lands flush. Lead right by Agbeko doesn’t quite get there. Hard body shot by Agbeko. And he tries to go back to the body immediately. Darchinyan shuffling, winding up like an idiot with that loaded left, and he gets clipped trying to throw that mess. Left hook Agbeko. Darchinyan unable to find Agbeko so far.
Right hand Agbeko. Darchinyan winding up on the lefts, throwing them, and Agbeko comes back with a THUDDING right that stings Vic! Darchinyan is back to REALLY wide, wild punching tonight. I mean good lord. It’s like a Darchinyan downgrade.
Agbeko swinging rights, Darchinyan throwing back as the round comes to an end. This is gonna get nasty. You can just feel it.
Agbeko 10-9

Agbeko-Darchinyan R2
Agbeko trying to time and counter Vic, and so far it looks pretty good. here they go! Agbeko wins that quick exchange on a nasty right at the end. Oh they are winging it now. These are hard, hard shots being thrown. Someone’s bound to get caught.
Left hook Agbeko. He’s landing the vast majority of the best, cleanest, hardest punches and really throwing Vic off. Left by Vic doesn’t make it in. He’s really wild again. This is not a good gameplan. The Darchinyan that mixed his amateur boxing with the destroyer personality in there was great.
Agbeko with a slippery little left hook, and another. Darchinyan did land a hard left in there though. Agbeko trying to work the body some. Vic just seems out of sorts so far, although he ended the second round pretty well.

Agbeko slips trying to work around Darchinyan’s offense. Right hand Agbeko. Left hand Agbeko, Darchinyan clipped him a bit there. Darchinyan isn’t going so willy nilly this round. Darchinyan charges, gets Agbeko backed down. Agbeko throwing lead rights, trying to find Vic open. Left hook to the body by Agbeko. Quick double left from Vic. Slippery lead right by Agbeko again. This is turning into an intriguing fight, because I think Agbeko really has all the momentum. And Darchinyan is wobbled! here they go now!
Wow, Vic got hurt, because he responded really poorly there.

Agbeko-Darchinyan R4
Vic is coming for it now. Left hand landed and he put the bum’s rush on. Darchinyan throws a left, and their feet tangle and Agbeko trips again. Vicious lead left by Vic just misses. Agbeko looks a bit overwhelmed by a settled and aggressive Darchinyan, who is straight up headhunting. Left hook Agbeko. This is pure brawling and nothing more. This is as close to a streetfight as it gets at the top level of boxing. Darchinyan ends the round throwing with purpose again.
Darchinyan takes this round, but it wasn’t as wide as it looked like it might be early. Vic is having real trouble with Agbeko’s style. This feels like it could break either way right now.
Darchinyan 10-9
Agbeko 39-37

Agbeko-Darchinyan R5
Trading to start the round again. Darchinyan’s corner wants him to start pumping the jab, but he seems to have no intent on using that advice. Agbeko is really starting this round strongly. Darchinyan almost eats a night-ender of a right hand. Agbeko with a left hook. Darchinyan is not there tonight like he has been, and it’s because Agbeko is following a LOT of the Donaire blueprint, and also because Vic just isn’t doing what he has against Kirilov, Mijares and Arce.
Blood dripping from Darchinyan’s nose to go with the cut over his left eye.
They THUD on perfectly timed stereo punches. Agbeko going back to the body. This round is a turning point. Vic has to find some answers because Agbeko is, to put it simply, all up in his shit and starting to break him down. Here comes Darchinyan with big shots, but it doesn’t last. Agbeko breaks his rhythm.
Vic’s tiring. His nose might be broken, too.

Agbeko-Darchinyan R6
Agbeko sort of digs his shoulder into Darchinyan’s ribs coming in low, and it looked for a second like Darchinyan really felt that. Left hand by Vic. Agbeko goes back to the lead right to curb Vic’s enthusiasm. Lead right Darchinyan is a bit short. Lead right Agbeko again.
Hard right snaps Darchinyan’s head around. Looked like he didn’t see that one coming at all. Darchinyan is visibly frustrated at this point. His body language is telling the story. Uppercut to the body by Darchinyan, no response by Agbeko. Darchinyan ends the round flurrying.
Agbeko 10-9
Agbeko 59-55
Darchinyan round
But once again close. Agbako landed more punches, but they were grazing for the most part. Darchinyan landed about 3 or 4 solid punches, including a few that stole the round at the end.

Agbeko-Darchinyan R7
This might be well closer than I have it so far on the official cards, and a round the other way wouldn’t surprise me, but man, I just like the way Agbeko is fighting tonight and Vic isn’t looking sharp at all.
This fight is good, not great, and more interesting than good, even. Darchinyan is working OK in spurts, but he’s just not jabbing, he’s not working his way in, not hurting Agbeko, and he’s getting worn out.
And now it appears that Agbeko was knocked down — yup, standing eight. That’s a big turner. I think that might’ve been quite legitimate. I’m not sure though.
Well, Vic got back in this fight if he was down like on my card. I thought the round was really close until that, but I’m a guy that thinks knockdowns should really matter, and that’s a swing.
Darchinyan 10-8
Agbeko 67-65
Round went about a minute long apparently.
10-9 Darchinyan round
Not 10-8 Darchinyan, but also not 10-10 like Bernstein suggested. They just seem extremely biased towards Agbeko. Once again, Vic landed the stronger punches all round, like he’s been doing most rounds.
Anyway, 67-66 Agbeko

Agbeko-Darchinyan R8
Agbeko blocked on an entire three punch combo, and Vic comes back. This is getting sort of grueling. Darchinyan FLINGS a wild left. That nearly took Agbeko’s head off. Vic is hurt it looks like. I thought he was just posturing, but he’s hurting. Agbeko has him backing down and trying to cover up.
Darchinyan getting wild again, and he’s caught with another shot. But there’s a straight left. I do not count Vic out at all, even though he’s looking far worse for wear. VERY low blow by Darchinyan, looked totally accidental but you never know. Agbeko doesn’t Clottey it up at least.
Agbeko FIRING AWAY AND THEY END THE ROUND FIRING BACK AND FORTH! Oh man.
Darchinyan looks hurt again after the bell. Man, I just think Agbeko is the better man tonight.
Agbeko 10-9
Agbeko 77-74
Agbeko-Darchinyan R9
Agbeko is just marching through Vic’s offense. Straight left by Darchinyan! That was a beauty. Agbeko’s chin is rock solid so far tonight. I mean he’s really been tagged a fair amount of times.
Two lefts by Darchinyan. Good round for him, about a minute left. Agbeko trying to throw arm punches to keep Vic away. Left hand by Darchinyan lands again. Wild brawl breaks out for a moment, then a wild hug. Darchinyan throws the video game left. He damn near jumped on that one. Darchinyan is going to the reserve tanks this round. He SLINGS one that almost puts Agbeko down right before the bell. Great round for Vic, IMO.

Agbeko-Darchinyan R10
These rounds are going to be big, obviously.
Darchinyan complaining about a headbutt. Seems like it really bothered him. Left hook by Agbeko was ugly but landed. Agbeko is looking gassed. Darchinyan is looking tired. Someone’s going to have to dig deep because this is a close, close fight.
Darchinyan’s right eye is busted open. He’s hurting. That cut isn’t good at all. Darchinyan basically throws Agbeko down. This is really getting brutal. These guys are hating each other right now.
Vic trying to seek and destroy, and he takes a right hook as the camera goes out of focus. Agbeko with right hands. They are leaving it out there. Not a pretty fight, not overly exciting, but just a war of attrition now. I love fights like this.
Darchinyan comes out of it looking ugly, but it was a ’butt, and frankly I thought he looked better.

Agbeko-Darchinyan R11
The cut is ruled an accidental headbutt. It’s pretty bad.
Darchinyan REALLY responds to a low blow or a shoulder to the ribs, and now shoves Agbeko away. Agbeko does a slow fall. This is gonna break down, man.
Darchinyan lunges with the left, Agbeko trying to time him. Both are landing sniper-type shots back and forth. At this point they really ARE swinging on Agbeko’s junk. I mean it’s gotten absurd. “He looks like he could go 25 rounds!” No, he absolutely does not.
At some point you have to wonder how much the back-and-forth cheapshots play into what this fight looks like in rounds 11 and 12. Darchinyan picking away with good shots as they tell us Agbeko is in control of the round. I really don’t think he is. Vic is putting in one hell of a rallying effort and it’s like it’s not even happening.
Darchinyan 10-9
104-104
I thought that was a wide Darchinyan round
I have no idea what the commentators are talking about. Darchinyan landed lots of square punches, Agbeko only landed glancing blows.

Lead right by Agbeko. Agbeko with a right downstairs. Agbeko is throwing the hands this round. Darchinyan needs to open it up. Another right lands for Agbeko. Darchinyan has half a round left to make a statement. Right now I think he’s losing the round.
Vic lunges, going to the body. Little late for that, but who knows I guess. Hit ‘em where it’s open. Agbeko trips again. Their feet have gotten tied up a ton. Vic’s just not throwing much this round — he might think he’s comfortably ahead, and I just don’t see that.
Agbeko avoids the Darchinyan lunge. 20 seconds.
Agbeko ties him up on another charge. Darchinyan trying to find ANY way to get at him, and Agbeko literally ties him up to end the fight and refuses to let him get away. I think he just sneaked this fight out.

Cruz-Solis Round 1
If the fight is anything like the walk-ins, this will be the fight of the night.
Ref: “LET’S THROW SOME THUNDER!!!”
Both fighters come out to the middle of the ring, a bit cautious. Uncharacteristically, Cruz isn’t throwing punches yet. Now here he comes. Solis throws a right hand, and Cruz lunges forward and throws 6 punches. Same thing happens again, only this time Cruz slips and falls forward, almost through the ropes. Solis is trying to box on the outside. He’s having no problem finding Cruz, but he’s only throwing one punch at a time, and Cruz is throwing 5 or 6 in return.
Cruz slips for the third time in the first round. Solis comes in and lands a punch, then grabs, but while he’s grabbing, Cruz throws three punches. Cruz lunges in wildly, hitting lots of air, but he just keeps coming and coming, and eventually he finds his target. Nice 4 punch combo from Cruz to close out the round.
Cruz 10-9

Solis looked like he wanted a feeling out round, but Cruz didn't let him have it.

Cruz-Solis Round 2
Marco Antonio Barrera is scoring the fight, taking the Harold Lederman role. He has it 10-9 Cruz.
The fighters come out to the middle of the ring, and Solis tried to land some accurate shots, but Cruz bum rushes in again and throws 4 or 5 punches. The first few in each of these exchanges misses, but he just doesn’t stop throwing until he lands with something.
Cruz lunging forward, almost running behind an outstretched right, and he lands a couple of shots. Solis lands a couple of nice uppercuts in return on the inside. Cruz is crude as hell, but he has his thing, and it seems to be working for him. Cruz now on the outside, and Solis misses with a couple of shots. Cruz rushes in again and throws a four punch combo to the body while running forward.
Solis seems completely bothered by Cruz’s style. This isn’t the same fighter Solis dominated a few years ago. Cruz rushes in, and Solis lands a nice shot to the body, and then ESPN cuts to commercial before the bell rings. Presuming there wasn’t much time left, that was another Cruz round.
20-18 Cruz
Barrera scored that one for Solis.

Cruz-Solis round 3
Cruz bum rushes forward again. Solis tries to swing fairly wildly, and Cruz seems to have Solis in a little bit of trouble. Solis lands a nice right. Cruz comes in forward and throws three, while Solis simultaneously lands an uppercut. That’s the fight in microcosm, and probably will remain so. Cruz just throwing so many punches, but Solis being much more accurate, and landing the more effective shot. Cruz comes in and lands a nice straight left to the head of Solis. Solis backtracking now. Solis throws an uppercut that misses, and Cruz counters with six punches rushing in. SOLIS LOOKS HURT NOW!!!! HE JUST WON’T STOP THROWING PUNCHES!!! PROBABLY 30 PUNCHES, AND SOLIS FINALLY GOES DOWN.
There’s a huge gash over Solis’s eyebrow now. Not sure whether that was called a knockdown or a slip, but it sure looked like a knockdown to me. I suspect the cut was by a punch as well. Now Cruz gets dirty, and as Solis tries to throw a punch, Cruz does a judo style takedown on Solis. This round should have been over a minute ago, but it’s still going. Finally the bell rings.
10-8 round for Cruz, I think. I usually can understand Spanish well enough, but these guys are going too fast for me.
30-26 Cruz

I guess I amend to 9-8 Cruz

On replay, the cut was caused by a headbutt

Barrera scored the third 9-8 for Solis
So I guess there were a couple deductions?

Round 4
Cruz has slowed down considerably now. Solis is landing pretty much at will. Cruz, is starting to rush in, but not following it with punches in bunches. Solis is boxing on the outside, and just being much more accurate. Cruz is always a bit wild, so if he doesn’t follow up his first punch with 3 or 4 more, nothing really lands.
The cut on Solis’s head is open again, and it’s streaming down his face. I think they may be taking another point from Cruz, but I can’t tell for sure. The cut over Solis’s eye looks pretty bad – not long, but very deep.
Solis took this round pretty easily.
48-46 Cruz, 47-46 if there was a deduction there.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
OK, no deduction that last round
So I have it 48-46 Cruz.

OOOO
That shot was right where you don’t want it to be
Round 5
The ref continually warning Cruz seems to be stopping him from bum rushing Solis. Solis nails Cruz with an unintentional looking low blow, and Cruz seems bothered by it.
Cruz falling in again, but Solis has him timed now. When he lunges in, Solis catches him so he can’t follow up with 3 more punches. Now Solis throws a VERY intentional looking low blow to Cruz, and Cruz is on the ground writing in pain.
I’m a bit surprised the ref didn’t dock a point for that one. A minute later, and Cruz is still in serious pain. I don’t think this is an acting job at all though. Solis should have been docked a point for that. Cruz fginally seems collected, and he comes and rushes in. Solis’s cut opens back up on a headbutt. Solis with the jab, Cruz rushes in and throws three back. Still, Cruz isn’t landing at all now, just hitting lots of air. Solis is still pretty accurate.
Solis round
57-56 Cruz. But I’m still shocked that no point was deducted from Solis.

Round 6
Cruz is back to rushing in again, and he throws about 7 unanswered punches. Now, Solis is turning into his punches, and nailing Cruz in the face with punches of decent force. Solis seems to have finally settled down, and Cruz just isn’t throwing with the same volume that he was in the early rounds.
solis with a nice left hand combo, to the body and the head, and Cruz tries coming inside, but Solis grabs behind the head and throws at the same time. Solis is taking this fight over, but Cruz is still trying his damnedest to bother Solis. At the end of the round, Cruz nails Solis with a huge uppercut that seems to hurt Solis.
Solis round, but Cruz almost stole it.
56-56. That’s my score, and I’m sticking to it.

Round 7
Solis is backpedaling now, on his horse and trying to pepper Cruz, but Cruz is being fairly effective and Solis isn’t landing much. Solis tries to throw, and Cruz grabs him behind the head and nails him with two shots while he;s immobilized.
Solis slips on one of the ads, and we get a time out. The time off seems to energize Solis, who is coming forward again. Now we get another time out because Cruz’s glove has loose tape. This is just ridiculous. The ref has pretty much lost control of the fight. Both fighters get a well-deserved breather.
Halfway through the round, and time is back in. Cruz rushes forward and is throwing punches in bunches again. Solis lands a nice counter, but it doesn’t change the fact that Cruz landed three punches to Solis’s one. Cruz throwing lots of punches from all angles. Solis turns into a nice left hook to the body. Neither guy is really hurting the other one, but this is a war, and ANOTHER low blow by Solis! Cruz is writhing ont he floor again, and the ref STILL isn’t deducting a point. Cruz seems pissed as hell that Solis hasn’t gotten a deduction yet. He’s still hurting. Solis is getting away with murder with these low blows.
The ref gives Solis a warning. Big fricking whoop. There’s no way that three separate low blows right on the nutsack are all accidental. And seriously, all of them were full force shots right on the nutsack. Now he gets docked.
Anyway, that one was a Cruz round for me, but I could see it going either way.
10-8 Cruz round
66-64 Cruz
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Barrera has two 9-8 rounds
So there might have been a deduction I missed.
Round 8, and the fighters are out in the middle of the ring, where Cruz looks his weakest. Solis is jabbing from the outside, and Cruz seems seriously depleted, probably from all the low blows. Suddenly, Cruz is just standing there to be hit. This isn’t the Cruz I’ve seen in his last 5 or so fights. In a boxing match, Solis will beat Cruz every time. Cruz needs to make it a brawl to win. While he doesn’t have a big punch, he can land if he can throw a lot. Solis throws a shot that seems to stun Cruz a bit while he’s motioning to the ref. Now Cruz throws Solis down. This is one of the dirtier fights I can remember seeing lately. It makes Cotto-Clottey look clean.
Anyway, Cruz wasn’t throwing, and when Cruz isn’t throwing, he’s losing. Solis round, pretty clearly.
75-74 Cruz

Yeah and i have no idea how it is going to be scored. Either guy could be up 4 points.

Round 9
Solis digs in with a coiuple of nice shots to the body, but Cruz comes back with a couple of wild shots that land and seem to hurt Solis. Cruz appears to knock down Solis, but it’s called a slip. Now they’re back on the outside, where Solis can do well. Solis’s cut is bleeding pretty profusely again. Cruz is stalking but not throwing, but neither is Solis. Now he comes in and hrows a number of punches that land. He lunges in and lands a nice shot, but Solis lands two good counters. Now Solis is controlling again, landing shots without Cruz being too aggressive. Cruz falls in straight into one of Solis’s uppercuts. Cruz stalking, but missing. Solis, running, but not throwing. Solis lands a couple of nice shots at the end there that seem to hurt Cruz a little bit, and on that basis I’ll give him the round.
84-84
BTW, sorry about the typing. I don’t have a full-sized keyboard right now, and I’ve had a few drinks.

ROund 10
Back on the outside, where Solis does well. Cruz lands a nice elbow square on Solis’s chin, but no call from the ref. Solis now bum rushes in for the first time all night, with Solis throwing an 8 punch flurry Cruz-style. Cruz now coming abck forward, but at the end of the punches Solis lands an effective punch to the body.
Both guys seem to be running out of gas a bit, and there’s a lot more holding going on now. Three times in a row, both guys hit each other at the exact same time. Solis with a digging shot to the body, but Cruz is a machine. He just keeps coming forward. They’re up against the ropes. CRUZ HAS SOLIS HURT! NOW SOLIS COUNTERS AND THAT STUNS CRUZ! Cruz comes back strong the last couple seconds with Solis up against the ropes, sealing the round for him.
I agree, this is a halfway impossible fight to score.
But I personally have it 94-93 Cruz.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Round 11
Solis dancing on the outside, landing a punch to the body, but missing with 4 more. Cruz goes back to bullrushing, landing all four punches he throws. Solis seems a bit bothered again, pushing Cruz down from behind his head. Some more holding when Cruz gets inside, but Cruz is the one throwing and landing all of the punches now. Solis with another borderline low blow.
A bit of wrestling in the middle of the ring, and Solis throws a few good shots to the body. Cruz has slowed down a lot in the last 30 seconds. Now Cruz gets it back, and comes inside, throwing a bunch of weak shots that have littel effect. Cruz wings a wils left hook that hits air, and Solis counters with a nice left hook to Cruz’s body. this is probably the hardest round to score of the whole fight, in a fight where most of the rounds are hard to score. Solis was much more accurate, Cruz had the workrate, Solis won the second half, Cruz won the first half. I’m going to split the difference and call that one 10-10.
104-103 Cruz

Round 12
Cruz Comes in and NAILS Solis with a left hand that momentarily stuns his opponent. Cruz throws a couple of shots that miss, then Solis comes back with a nice counter, and then grabs Cruz. A lot of tying up now. Cruz gets on the inside, but Solis punishes him to the body. Solis is coming out like he wants to TAKE this fight. He;s as aggressive as he’s been all night, and it’s not like he’s been shying away from contact.
Cruz is just about toast. He’s throwing some punches, but they have NOTHING on them. Solis, ont he other hand, is punishing the body. Cruz comes inside to throw, but Solis nails him right back with a good uppercut. 20 seconds left, and Cruz is plowing forward, trying to theow, but he has nothing left. SOLIS NAILS HIM!!! CRUZ’S LEGS ARE JELLO!!! 10 SECONDS LEFT, CAN HE STAY ON HIS FEET? SOLIS POUNDS, POUNDS AWAY, BUT THE BELL RINGS AND THE FIGHT IS OVAH!
Very clear Solis round, possibly a 10-8 round. However, I score it 10-9, and I have it a DRAW.
This is the fifth fight I’ve watched tonight, and this was quite clearly the fight of the night.

Evidently there were way more deductions than I could decipher on the Spanish language telecast
If I had made all the proper deductions, I would have had it 112-111 Cruz rather than 113-113.

The scoring could be really wide here and be completely legitimate. Each fighter only clearly won 3 rounds, and there were deductions galore, plus a knockdown.

Cristobal Cruz

You know, you got to feel good about Cristobal Cruz. I remember when he was being called a random journeyman fighting Zahir Raheem (in a fight that I won’t say he was robbed in, but the judges were certainly judging on autopilot). He got to where he is the ultimate hard way, and has worked his ASS off to make it more than a one hit wonder.
Tip of the hat.
Good for him man, guy came in as a 7-1 dog against Mashaba and just took his life to the next level with that beautiful performance.
I still think Mashaba won that fight though
Cruz outworked him to death, but he landed the clean, effective punches and had Cruz stunned a few times.
