Bad Left Hook Fight Day: Andriy Kotelnik v. Amir Khan

(via www.boxnews.com.ua)

The show should start live at 4pm ET in the States, and there are no promises with a thing like this, but we're going to do our very best to bring you live, round-by-round coverage and scoring of Andriy Kotelnik's 140-pound title defense against Amir Khan from M.E.N. Arena in Manchester.

Note: Yes, I and others here in the States will be watching this via an online stream. This fight is being presented by Sky Box Office in the UK, and under no circumstances do we condone our UK readers streaming this fight illegally. For those of us in the States, it's our only option. But we paid for March Badness, damn it, so you pay for Kotelnik-Khan. (Which is actually a far better fight than anything on March Badness, I'm just saying...)

Hey guys

I’m watching the ITV4 card at the moment.

Jon Thaxton, Nathan Cleverly (a massive prospect, second only to Kell Brook in the UK) and Tyson Fury – I’ll try and keep you updated.

I’ll be switching to Sky box office at 10pm, and will be watching the Olympians, Kell Brook, Enzo Mac, Anthony Small and Khan (of course)

Jono is about to start fighting agsint Tommy Glover.

by bazzlad on Jul 18, 2009 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Jon (Jonno) Thaxton 34 – 9 – 0 vs Tom Glover 8 – 5 -3

Glover is a last minute replacement and a Brick Layer by trade, but a decent fighter.

I think Jonno will ko him within 6.

And one of the most packed British nights of boxing is starting!

by bazzlad on Jul 18, 2009 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

Rnd 1 –
Jono out the blocks like a whirlwind. Glover decides to stand and trade.
Uppercut from Thaxton lands sweet. Glover takes it.

Glover coming forward second half of the round, Jono fighting well off the backfoot, and occassionally pushing forward. Jono switch hitting, and having success.

Good body shots from Thaxton. Glover gets through with a few of his own.

Thaxtons round 10- 9.

by bazzlad on Jul 18, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Rnd 2 -
Jono again out the blocks like a nutjob.
Throwing hooks and uppercurs from all angles.

Glover catches jono with a big hook and stuns him. Jono shakes it off.

They trade hooks. Thaxton cut on the forehead. I think an upset may be on the cards if Jono keeps this up, he’ll knacker himself out. Glover boxing well, looks a lot better than his record.

Jono has no defense here and looks tired and hurt. Glover won’t let him off the hook. Jono holds.

Jono now sticking and moving, a good tactic.

He can’t trade with guy with by the looks of it.

Signal has gone! WTF!

Is back now.

Good round –
Glovers round 10 – 9

19 – 19

by bazzlad on Jul 18, 2009 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

Rnd 3 –
The cut is on the forehead, high, no danger. The danger is he takes more of those hooks from Glover.

Thaxton boxing completely off the back foot now, Glover looks hard, tough and fit.

Thaxton work rate is good but Glover seems to be walking through his punches and backing Thaxton up, Glover catches Thaxton with another hook to the head, Thaxton not offering much in the way of defence and really needs to start getting his hands up.

Thaxton resorts to using the shoulder to a resounding boo from the crowd. Thaxton’s punches seems to have no power now and Glover just doesnt seem hurt.

End of the round and Thaxton lands the more scoring punches though seems to be completely boxing himself out and hard to see how he can keep this pace up. 10-9 Thaxton.

Round 4: Thaxton fighting with some urgency now going for scoring punches and not loading his punches and wearing himself out as he’s realised that this tactic wont work. Everytime Thaxton clinches he leaves his hands low and keeps getting caught with hooks with Glover.

by bazzlad on Jul 18, 2009 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Round 4 contd.

As the round continues Thaxton is looking tired Glover is imposing himself more and more and certainly looks like the fitter of the two right now. 10-9 Glover

quick note

When the Khan fight starts in particular, let me get a round posted in the RBR before anyone really comments so we can tell how much delay I’ll have compared to everyone else, and nobody winds up calling a KO before I or others can see it or what have you.

by Scott Christ on Jul 18, 2009 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

Round 5

Halfway through and its dead even on rounds, as the round starts a hook from Glover stuns Thaxton, he is clearly hurt and nearly goes down he weathers the storm by cleverly going in and out using his experience. Thaxton still throwing more punches, however Glover is getting all the telling shots and Thaxton is visibly tired.

Good Round for Thaxton other than the little patch

10 – 9 Thaxton

Round 6

Thaxton one round ahead in my opinion.

Glover can’t miss with his hooks, and now his jab is finding the target.
Glover really piling on the pressure, but Thaxtons ring savviness is showing.
Pops out a combo then moves, a good choice, this Glover looks like he’s walk through houses to get the win.

Thaxtons skills keeping him ahead, but he’s still getting hurt occasionally by Glover.

Thaxton, keeps backing out of clinches with his hands at his side and getting hit by hooks. Idiot. Keep em up.

Quiet round this one.

They’re fighting in a phone box now, and Thaxton is knackered. One big punch and I think Thaxton may go, Gonna be saved by the bell.

Thaxtons Round. Just.

His mouth is gaping.

2 rounds left, Thaxton up by 2.

Failing a KO, KD or stoppage, I see Thaxton winning.

Glover looks a lot mroe impressive than his records suggest I saw him fight Sidddick (SP?) who got DQ’d and he looked decent, but not this good.

Same as every other round atm – Thaxton out moving, popping combos then getting hooked on the way off.

Ref taks a point for holding/pushing.

Glover is now only 1 rnd behind, with this round and one more to go.

Thaxton lands a good punbch on Glvoers chin but he’s solid and takes it.

Glover coming on strong, but is mostly ineffective, his efforts matched by Thaxtons skills.

Thaxton holding again, ref getting pissed.

Seriously hard to score round, Jono taks it I think 9 – 9 but the deduction makes it evens.

by bazzlad on Jul 18, 2009 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

Bear in mind they’re fighting a weight divsion heavier than Jono normally does.

Last round,

In my opinion, Jono is 2 above still thanks to getting the last round, TV commentors think Glover has the last round.

So it’s even.

They’re toe to toeing it again.

Everything on the line here.
No judges ref will score.

Ref having a go at Thaxton for holding again, this is bad news for him.

2 mins left and Jono is knackered. Trading hooks, Jono on his bike a bit.
Jono giving out the quality punches but they’re powder puff.

Glover chagring forward but again manily ineffective, massive comnbo from jono on Glvoer absolutely lovely, 8 punches but now he’s gone. Nothing left in the tank.

Last 20 seconds, Glover lands a big Right, Thaxton staggers, last 10, toe to toe, Thaxton hammering Glover, where’d he get that from?

GLOVERS GOT IT!

by bazzlad on Jul 18, 2009 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

Well that was an eighth round a grown man can be proud of.

Ref gives it to Glover! Wow!

by Scott Christ on Jul 18, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t agree with that decision, the quality was from Jono, but it’s hard to argue against, Glover worked so hard for it.

Jono shows great sportsmanship hugging Glover.

Great fight!

He won the US Olympic trials at superheavyweight

But the US didn’t qualify for enough spots at the Olympics, so he was left behind. 6’2" and strong, Michael “Bounty” Hunter’s son. Only 20 years old or so now. Made it to the finals of the national Golden Gloves in his first tournament as an amateur. Can move well, but will need to improve his workrate in the pros. I like him a lot though. Reminds me a bit of Oliver McCall. Who knows how good his chin is though.

Hall-Small R1

Small jumps in with a left hook to the body. Lots of circling and then Small grabbing onto Hall once they get close, and Hall just sort of tries to bull him off. Small doing lots of laughing and posturing. Small talking Sshit to Hall during a clinch. He’s being warned for it now. Really awkward first round with Small dancing and jiving and talking, and really he landed more good punches, so even though it wasn’t that amazing, he takes the round.

Hall-Small R2

Second round starts and the referee stops them before they can start and tells them to shut up, basically. Now Small is firing. Nice right lands for Small. Left hook by Hall is blocked. Left hook to the body does land for Hall. And another one lands with Small trapped on the ropes. Good work by Hall. Right hand over the top nearly lands. Hall bulling Small into the ropes and trying to go to work, and he’s getting something done this round. But there’s Small with a nice combination to come back moments later. Small winging shots off the ropes. Action has really picked up. Hall with a BIG body shot, Small postures. Hall with another right over the top, and a left hook, and ANOTHER right to close out the round. This could be turning into quite a fight.

Hall-Small R3

Small doing more posturing. I think he believes this will help him win the fight, as Hall is sort of beating him up when they trade. I mean this is absurd bullshitting for a fighter against a guy who isn’t, like, missing an arm or something. Hall is staying pretty calm overall, but he almost wailed the back of his head in with a right hand.

Small isn’t landing much or anything. Then he gets caught in the corner and gets hit a couple times. Left hand lands up top, big body shot lands by Hall. This is kind of hilarious. Small is losing a round because he’s acting like an idiot instead of fighting. Small lands a couple, turns Hall around, and still doesn’t really land. He’s taking to grabbing on when he’s close again.

Hall 10-9
Hall 29-28

Referee seems really sick of Small.

Hall-Small R4

Small warned again at the start of the round. Small throwing in bunches, but only a couple get home. There’s a nice three punch combo from Small, with Hall firing back a left hook. Hall may have a cut near his left eye.

They’re trading some good shots on the ropes now, with Hall getting the slight better of it, I think. Good right by Hall, but I’ll tell you, Small isn’t backing off at all. Hasn’t appeared shaken yet. Small is moving around a lot. It’s Hall that’s doing the majority of the fighting. Small is dictating where the fight goes, Hall is dictating how it goes. If that makes sense. Closer round, but I still think Hall is winning this fight.

Hall-Small R5

Small is basically headlocking Hall at times now. And he’s moving around a lot, and he’s grabbing a lot. This is getting ridiculous. Referee warns both of them again. “This is the second time I’ve had to talk to you about this. This is poor, and people have paid their money,” or something like that.

Small having a better round. It’s ugly as shit, but it’s what he should probably do. He’s sticking and then running for cover. I mean there’s no other way to put it. Hall tries to lunge in with a straight right and gets caught with an uppercut for his trouble. Hall really got frustrated this round.

Small starting to use his hit-and-run-and-run-and-grab-and-run-and-grab-and-hit-and-grab-and-run to great effectiveness. Not so much that he’s beating up on Hall with it, but he’s keeping Hall out of it offensively. Small really taking this fight by the horns this round and the last. Hall has a cut for sure now. Small sticking and moving at will right now. It was a clash of heads that caused the cut, for the record.

Hall starting to wing at center ring. HUGE right from Small! He might have more gas left in the tank. Big right by Small again! He’s really turned it on. Hall is getting desperate. Hall winging big haymakers, the cut is getting ugly, and Small is picking his spots. Double left hook to the body by Hall. Small letting himself play into Hall’s game now: It’s getting nasty inside, where Hall can score. Small making Hall miss at range, then blocks some big shots.

Kotelnik-Khan R1

Kotelnik staying at distance and flicking a jab. Khan trying to come in, but Kotelnik’s gloves are high and picking off everything. Kotelnik just misses a left hook. Khan digs to the body, then shoves Kotelnik. Khan isn’t landing a whole lot at all, but Kotelnik is just feeling him out, almost giving the first round away. Khan’s speed is there at 140, in case anyone was psychotically worried about that in the five-pound jump.

Kotelnik isn’t doing anything at all offensively. I think he’s just waiting to time Khan. Kotelnik with a left to the body now. Good combination by Khan, mostly blocked but a body shot finds its home. Khan is coming in with hooks and then shoving Kotelnik away and looking for another shot after that. Freddie is clearly making him smarter.

Kotelnik-Khan R2

Good right counter by Khan as Kotelnik comes out looking to make something happen. Long lead right by Khan, which Roach told him between rounds to stop. There’s a three punch combo and none of it landed or was even close. Crowd reacted, though. Khan basically tried to wrestle and turn him in mid-ring there. Three jabs, none land. There’s a lot that isn’t landing at all by Khan. Kotelnik is losing because he’s doing fuck all, but Khan isn’t denting him yet.

Kotelnik catches Khan with a right, and Khan backs down immediately. Now we’ve got a plot point. His chin is just rotten. Kotelnik puts the chase on momentarily.

If this keeps up, Khan is going to win this thing going away so long as he’s got the stamina to do so. He’s not hitting Kotelnik much, just overwhelming him with speed. But Andriy hit him with one solid shot that buzzed him. It’s interesting at least.

Kotelnik-Khan R3

Kotelnik letting his hands go, and Khan just covers up like he’s terrified of getting hit. But he weathers it and comes back! Khan working at range again. Khan working the jab, just pumping it out there to keep Kotelnik at bay. Really good gameplan, honestly. I’m really intrigued by how this is playing out. Kotelnik is going to have to get more aggressive than he wants to to win, because Khan is too fast for him otherwise. Kotelnik digs some good shots, and Khan comes back! Good stuff by Amir. He’s answering when Kotelnik comes at him.

Kotelnik-Khan R4

Khan making Kotelnik miss sometimes, and covering up really well at others. His defense is SO much better than it was pre-Freddie, which is not a surprise but a pleasure to see. Kotelnik starting to amp it up a bit and landed a body shot there. Khan’s jab looks really good as both a deterrent and an actual weapon. Kotelnik chasing Khan now, lands a body shot, and Khan finds his bearings and lands a right. Kotelnik is making this a fight now. Two long rights by Kotelnik don’t quite get there. Good round for Kotelnik, actually. His tactics are starting to unfold. But I think Khan won the round.

Kotelnik-Khan R5

Kotelnik drills Khan with another right about a minute and 10 into the round. Khan is starting to get himself in trouble. Left by Kotelnik lands. Khan fires back. But he’s just not landing big punches through Kotelnik’s defense. He’s winging and trying to shove him off after still. It’s not really doing a whole lot. There’s a body shot by Khan.

This is edge of the seat stuff with Khan’s chin. That’s one thing I really love about watching him fight. He’s a super offensive talent and improving defensively but his chin is not fixable.

Khan clinches up after Kotelnik misses wild twice. Right to the chest by Kotelnik, but not much steam on it. Commentators are very pro-Khan this round, but I thought Kotelnik took it. He pressed and put Khan on his heels.

Kotelnik-Khan R6

Kotelnik is really starting to work the body and trying to set things up with a jab. Khan is throwing back and making himself look in it, but I think Kotelnik is starting to work his way into this fight and it looks like Khan may be tiring a fair bit. Khan trying to clinch and almost falls over because of it. He’s hitting a lot of gloves and elbows tonight. Right hand Kotelnik, and Khan looked shaken for a moment. Now Khan throws a ton back, and still isn’t landing much clean.

Khan with a nice right as he’s pumping his jab a ton. This is back to the early rounds now — Khan is moving around the ring, striking, and then getting away. Kotelnik looks plain slow in comparison. Kotelnik working inside, Khan just keeps coming back. Really key round for Amir Khan, I think. He totally dominated the action and has reversed any mild momentum Kotelnik might have gotten in the previous three competitive rounds.

I thought the Marquez-Vasquez trilogy was better than Gatti-Ward personally

Dunne-Cordoba is still my FOTY so far though.

I’ve got Marquez-Diaz by a hair but that could change. Dunne-Cordoba was amazing.

Those two are clearly the top 2 so far

Vazquez-Marquez trilogy was just as brutal and far better boxing IMO. Khan’s doing well using his hand speed and his movement. It’s very smart and exactly what he should be doing.

Lets see if khan can weather this storm in the last two rounds cause kotelnik has noting to lose now he has already lost

I don't think he has the nutsack to just go all out

Kotelnik-Khan R8

The longer this goes, the less I believe Kotelnik will find a really good opening. If he had one-punch KO power — even against Khan — I’d be interested still, but this is starting to turn into Khan’s coming out party. Kotelnik with a body shot and a left upstairs. Khan goes back to moving laterally, then swooping in with four or five shots and getting away from him again. Right hand from Kotelnik. I think Kotelnik could knock Khan down at any time (Willie Limond did it) but he’s not going to put him on Dream Street like Prescott did.

Wow, great bob-and-weave bit from Khan as Kotelnik makes a massive charge. Excellent awareness defensively.

Kotelnik is gona quit he cant win bar a flash knockout

by RealIrish on Jul 18, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

I doubt it

Khan doesn’t seem to be hurting him at all. He’s throwing all pitty patty arm punches, a la Paulie Malignaggi. He’s not turning his body into anything. He’s winning by keeping Kotelnik from throwing his own punches, but he’s not doing any damage either.

bingo

This isn’t the big time exciting breakthrough win we might’ve wanted, but right now he’s on pace to win impressively in his own new way.

Kotelnik-Khan R9

Khan starts going to the body. Kotelnik is going to need to get desperate and turn on the juice now. I mean that’s really all he’s got. He’s probably won one round tops on most cards, and I’ve given him two. This is an Amir Khan rout so far.

Kotelnik hits Khan, and Khan takes it. He goes back to what he was doing early and what he’s gone back to after some iffy middle rounds: Moving, throwing punches that don’t do a ton but keep him active and shut the opponent down, and then moving some more. Kotelnik lands a couple. Left hook lands for Kotelnik! Round ends.

Khan 10-9
Khan 88-83

Kotelnik-Khan R10

Kotelnik starting to throw with purpose, but Khan is doing his best to stay out of the wheelhouse and do the stick-and-move game. Khan just reacted to a left hook that grazed by putting his glove where it landed and keeping it there. Kotelnik fires, Khan fires. Neither have landed much in the way of good, clean punches this entire fight. Khan’s movement has made it hard for Kotelnik, and his offensive activity has helped make it even harder.

Apparently Kotelnik has landed 8 jabs to Khan’s 50.

Khan 10-9
Khan 98-92

Kotelnik-Khan R11

We’re in a pretty set pattern now. The crowd loves the Khan flurries, but there’s so little on them. He hasn’t hurt Kotelnik even once in this fight, but he’s outsmarted him the entire way, and Kotelnik is a really smart fighter. He’s used Freddie’s game plan and made it work beautifully. He’s taken Kotelnik out of the fight.

Kotelnik is trying. He’ll have to go for broke in the 12th. It’s the only shot he has. He’s a mile behind.

Khan 10-9

Kotelnik just needs to open up and risk getting KOed

If he comes forward wildly swinging, something good might happen.

Kotelnik-Khan R12

Stiff right by Kotelnik, Khan takes it well. Khan could run this entire round and win. And he appears as though he may do just that. A minute has passed.

Khan is really just on his horse, trying to stay away from Kotelnik, who’s putting some mustard on his punches. Khan backing him down when he sees openings now. Khan nearly stung by a big right, but Kotelnik just isn’t long enough from that distance. Kotelnik really isn’t offering much in the way of crazed desperation, which he really should. Losing by TKO is no big shame if he gets caught. He’s totally out of this fight.

Kotelnik chasing and throwing. Khan avoiding. And frankly Khan is winning this round with some well-timed pot shots. 10 seconds to go.

Uppercut by Khan. Kotelnik isn’t going to get close. Khan wins this baby by a landslide.

by RealIrish on Jul 18, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

But on a technical level

Khan beats everyone at 140 (other than Pac). It’s just a matter of whether he can protect his chin enough. Unless they can land that lucky punch, he beats Bradley, he beats Hatton, he beats Witter, he beats Maidana, he beats Urango.

Actually, strangely, the guy at 140 with the best chance of beating Khan is probably Randall Bailey

And I’d pick just about everyone I mentioned above to beat Bailey.

Easy Khan win. Not much fun to watch, but impressive from a pure skill POV.

Khan has the goods. Roach has the training. They can go far, but they might have to sacrifice KOs to get there, rendering Khan’s star power a bit tarnished.
