Poll: Cotto-Pacquiao or Mayweather-Marquez?

Pacquiao-vs-cotto-preview-update-300x206_medium Mayweather_vs_marquez_a763_medium

I figure the results are obvious, but let's do it for fun. Which fight strikes your fancy more: Mayweather-Marquez (Sept. 19) or Cotto-Pacquiao (Nov. 14)? They're the two biggest of the big fights for the fall.

Side request: If anyone is picking Mayweather-Marquez, tell us why. I figure somebody is.

I picked Mayweather/Marquez

because I have a vested rooting interest against “Money.” He’s a masterful tactician which pleases me to watch as a fan of the sport, but I keep waiting for him to get caught with a clean shot that shuts him up for a few minutes, at least. Plus, while the Pac/Cotto fight promises to be a good or even great one, I think Marquez is getting a bit of the short end of the evaluation here. He’s a tough little dude. Should be fun to watch him work after Floyd comes out in his Sombrero again.

Wear something sexy to my funeral.

Mayweather Marquez = better fight

I chose Mayweather-Marquez based mostly on Cotto’s last performance, where he didn’t look impressive or sharp. Given that Pac isn’t going to be fighting forever, Cotto is like a consolation prize vs a Pac-Mayweather fight.

Marquez has done the best out of all Pacquaio’s opponents and based on his performance against Diaz, i’m intrigued to see how he handles Mayweather and the move up in weight.

In the end, the stylistic, tactical matchup of Mayweather-Marquez makes it a better fight for me.

Mayweather Marquez will be better

I think Marquez v. Mayweather will be a better fight for a few reasons. Like Pops, I think Marquez is under-rated and definitely not getting the respect he deserves. In order to beat Mayweather you must have a relentless attacking style, which Marquez definitely possesses. The only time I have seen fighters have success against Mayweather is when they smother him, and attack the body. I feel that this fight is a style nightmare for Floyd, and I was actually pretty shocked when the fight was first announced because it’s a pretty tough opponent for a first fight out of retirement. I also believe this fight will be better because I don’t think Cotto has a chance against Pacman. I would love to see Cotto upset Pacquiao, but based on each of their last couple fights I don’t think Cotto has a chance. I have never been a Pacquaio fan but he is hands down the best in the world.

Seems you're talking of Pac

“relentless attacking style, which Marquez definitely possesses”

“smother him, and attack the body”

Respect your opinion, I’m just saying. =)

Maqruez fight is a joke...

He moves up 9 pounds higher than hes ever fought in his career.

Yeah its so unpredictable where that fight will go. I just hope he can at least eek out a split decision rather than give away a UD to Floyd.

I would have picked that fight if it wasn’t for the huge handicap that Marquez has been given but I’m willing to be quoted he will not win that fight at 144.

On the other hand the Pacquaio vs Cotto fight could go either way due to people under estimating Cotto and his abilities and Pacquaio not truly being tested in the 140’s IMO>

by MannyPacquiao on Jul 21, 2009 10:04 AM EDT reply actions

I really don't understand why so many people are underestimating Cotto

Like you said, Pacquiao’s fights at 140 and over haven’t exactly been against tip-top opposition. De La Hoya was old and drained. Hatton, while being the world champion, didn’t look good in his past few fights prior to Pacquiao excepting the match against Malignaggi. His last true test was against Juan Manuel Marquez in their rematch, a battle many believe he lost (I know Pac is a much better fighter now, but still).

Now I’m not gonna act like Cotto’s never fought opponents a class or two below him. But the fact is he’s one of the few fighters out there who’s constantly taking a chance against the best the sport has to offer. This makes all the doubts people are having about him since the Clottey fight all the more baffling. Not only did he have the balls to take on a man genuinely feared and near the top of the division, but in the actual fight he prevailed even with a nasty, early cut that hindered his vision and was very clearly bothering him. How can Cotto’s stock have dropped after that fight? What, is Clottey some pushover bum now that Cotto should have steamrolled over? Is pushing on through 3/4’s of a fight half-blind and winning not a big enough feat?

I may be biased when it comes to Cotto’s chances against Pacquiao, him being a fellow countryman and all, but when people talk about him being less of a fighter than he was before fighting Margarito or Clottey, it’s puzzling to me. If he loses come November, I sincerely doubt it’ll have anything to do with him being a shell of his former self or whatever. It’ll be because Pacquiao is an unbelievable athlete and the rightful p4p king.

well put

You said what I have been thinking exactly. There seems to be a weird disease floating around the boxing world which causes otherwise astute commentators to condemn fighters to washed-up status, regardless of their previous fights. Cotto is one who has received this treatment. Mosley is another. I would even put Vasquez in this category, though there is at least some medical reason for that judgment.

The more I see people talking about Cotto, the more I agree with you. The guy is fucking P4P top 10 and arguably the best welterweight in the world.

I’ll throw in one more thing about the Clottey fight, which I scored for Cotto anyway: Cotto was working with a first-time lead trainer after a terrible split with his uncle in camp. When Cotto-Clottey got signed, we all went, “Oh, sweet, that should be a hell of a competitive fight, I’m not really sure who’ll win,” and then we get an extremely close, really competitive, really good fight, and all people have done since is bitch about it.

Agreed. More good points.

Pacman vs Cotto/ Mayweather 2010

That fight is a joke. Freddie Roach will go down in history as one of the best trainers because he knows how to pick the perfect fights. This will be know different than DLH.
Cotto is still shell shocked and Pacman will expose that. Cotto actually lost that last fight, but since Clottey couldn’t close the deal fighting a guy with one eye he deserved to lose.
Mayweather and Pacman will happen.. This will be the biggest fight of 2010. Both of these fighters are going to make about 20million each, all Mayweather is doing is setting the stage and everybody will pay to see it. Including me ,count me in!

I would have voted Mayweather/Marquez had the Pacquiao/Cotto weight been anywhere south of 144. But as it stands, I like Cotto’s chances. Not only is it a more exciting fight, but a harder one to handicap.

by steak_knife on Jul 21, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

I would pick Mayweather/Marquez

Not much to say about this other than I like to see competitive fights. I don’t give Marquez much of a change against Mayweather I think he is made for him, but I will not underestimate a guy who is as smart in the ring as Marquez. I think it’s much more likely that fight is competitive than Pacquaio vs. Cotto. I don’t put Cotto in the same league as the other three fighters mentioned above.

by SkeedTom on Jul 21, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

This is a fair enough statement. I thought your Cotto as gatekeeper statement was a bit…crazy, sorry, because if Cotto’s keeping a gate that’s a pretty big fuckin’ gate, but classing him a notch below Pacquiao, Marquez and Mayweather is fair. I mean we’re talking the best of the best of the best with those three.

point taken

Great articles lately SC. It does look like fall will bring some nice fights.

More than just a fight

Floyd is always entertaining in the lead-up to any fight, be it during 24/7 or in interviews with Brian Kenny. Also Mayweather-Marquez has John-Juarez on the undercard and the other Hatton v. Judah, which should at least be entertaining. Therefore, even if money stinks out the joint, there will still be a lot of entertainment coming from this matchup. As a side note, this catchweight bs has got to stop. Either fight at a weight class or just don’t fight the guy, make the sacrifice or get lost.
