Rocky: "The Villains" 4 Man Tourney, Ivan Drago wins.

I know with the vast knowledge of boxing that the posters of Bad Left Hook have... we could have "what if" tournaments all day long with infinite matchups that could be made, today I came up with a unique 4 man "what if they fought" tournament featuring the 4 main "villains" from the Rocky movies.  So... Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago, and Tommy Gunn... lets see what the posters of BLH think of you.

Who would win?  In what fashion would they win?  What are the pro's and con's of each fighter?

Our first matchup: Apollo Creed vs Tommy Gunn

Well, I am thinking that I would have to give the edge to Apollo Creed in this one.  While Tommy Gunn has tremendous power, he never came off as an intelligent fighter with the right mental tools to go into the later rounds.  Apollo Creed would frustrate the hell out of Tommy Gunn with his speed and footwork in the early rounds and then take him out in the end.

In a 12 round fight... Apollo Creed wins by knockout in 10th round.

Our second matchup: Ivan Drago vs Clubber Lang

This is a fight that if it could have happened in the real world, I would pay whatever it took to see it live.  Both have ultimate power and technique, this would be the ultimate slug fest.  Ivan Drago would be able to take this one because he has no emotion and Clubber Lang was extremely emotional, that would be his downfall.

In a 12 round fight... Ivan Drago wins by knockout in the 6th.

Thats the opening bouts... figure I'll see what y'all say before nail down a final pairing.  Keep in mind y'all, this is for shits and giggles and the Rocky movies are epic in my mind.

Have fun!!

[Update] In the most humiliating beating since Tyson vs Michael Spinks, Apollo Creed moves to the finals over Tommy Gunn.... Creed gets 100% of the vote.

[Update2] In a grueling 12 round battle, Ivan Drago edges out Clubber Lang... reminiscent of Valuev vs Holyfield maybe?

Now in the finals: Apollo Creed comes back from the grave to avenge an exhibition loss to the "Siberian Bull" Ivan Drago.

Ivan Drago takes the tournament victory.... but ultimately gets his ass handed to him by Wladimir Klitschko 3 months later.

FanPosts do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Bad Left Hook or SB Nation. They might, though.

Tommy Gunn?

I say go with Thunderlips over Gunn. Or even Mason Dixon over Gunn.

by Fooch on Jul 3, 2009 12:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rocky Balboa (the movie): doesn't count

“The Line” Mason Dixon doesn’t exsist to me.. lol

Might as well throw Linda Hogan in against Tommy Gunn, she currently is the possessor of Thunderlips’s balls.

Rocky 5 was a LOT worse than Rocky Balboa...

yeah

I actually think Rocky Balboa is by far the second-best of the series since it has the most in common with the original. Pacing, storytelling, humanity, opportunity, redemption through ridiculous boxing brawls. But then I’m someone that thinks 2-5, as films, fucking stink.

by SC on Jul 3, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, Come On!

Rocky IV is my absolute favorite simply because it just keeps getting more ridiculous by the second! That said, only the original out of the other films is worth watching…

They’re fun watches but they are absolutely dreadful films. I mean bottom of the barrel garbage. But Stallone did the same thing with the Rambo character after First Blood so it’s hardly surprisng.

The last Rambo kicked ass, though. My favorite part is when he KILLED FUCKING EVERYTHING THAT COULD WALK

by SC on Jul 4, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure.

Awful movie making, but off-the-charts as a rewatchable film. If Rovky IV is on, I’ll watch. Wouldn’t you?

Rocky is a transcendent character. There was more to it than the actual fights… it was his life and death struggle with the world around him.

Say what you want about the films… but Rocky is a damn institution.

The only time the character really struck me as being poignant or all that interesting were the first and last movies. The rest was bullshit. Paulie and his robot. Come on.

But when done right, Rocky Balboa is one of the great movie characters of all time.

by SC on Jul 9, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is a reason why Rocky won the best picture… and it because no matter what Rocky overcame the adversities of his life and went the distance and got all the things he wanted. He got Adrian and got to hear the last bell.

Rocky is a lot better than every movie mentioned there. I don’t think Rocky was a great mistake at all. It’s a tremendous film, and that’s part of the reason I hate 2-5 so much. They dump on what made Rocky so great.

Rocky is a cut above all the other movies mentioned.

Being there while the damn things were being filmed is something I’ll never forget. In Manhattan, you could throw a rock and you’ll hit a film crew at a craft service table. But when I was a kid in South Philly, a film crew might as well have been a bunch of guys walking on the moon! They really shot me in the gut with the montage at the end of “Rocky Balboa.” Sonofapsycho probably gets it, especially if he’s over thirty.

I like the story of Rocky 5 more than Balboa but think that Balboa was done better.
In 5 how he ends up back were he was without the money and fame but still with his heart and the people close to him.

The one thing that totaly bugs me about Balboa is how he was medicaly suspended from fighting in 5 yet he passes the physical and fights again

That was an old, shot Creed though. Drago would have had problems with young Creed

While Drago had incredible power, his lateral movement sucked and he had problems on the inside. Moving was Creed’s forte.

Creed demolishes Gunn. Gunn quits after eight completely one-sided rounds.

Drago stops Lang in the goddamnedest five-round war you’ve ever seen.

Gunn would be forced to withdraw because the dr’s found out he had just contracted 4 more blood diseases… oh wait, this is Tommy Gunn and not Tommy Morrison.

What a magical event it would be to see Ivan “The Siberian Bull” Drago go up against Clubber “The Baddest in the World” Lang

Drago’s wife (circa de Beverly Hills Cop II and Rocky IV) and Tommy Gunn’s “girlfirend” in a creamed corn wrestling match between fights. Its a true extravaganza, I tell you!!

Drago’s reach and power i think would of got the best of Creed by the end of the fight. Apollo cant resist not going for the KO and Drago would catch him with a big shot down the line.

Clubber Lang

would have mullered them all. I loved Lang, and I think he would have had too much power for all of them, even if his shots kind of had the appearance of The Rock’s punches (the ones where he doesn’t look, but then THERE comes this looping force of nature….), just sped up….

Remember Lang was the only one who ever beat Rocky inside the distance….

Creed (prime) to beat Drago. The film fight was the equivalent of an old, past it former-great (Holyfield?) vs a massive, powerful, peak Russian (Valuev?), and we all know how that turned out…. Oh, hang on, that’s not right, is it? Prime Creed would have beaten Drago on points, using speed and flair to sway the judges, even if Drago did land the heavier shots.

Tommy Gunn had a padded record, and lost to the only good fighter he ever went in with (by went in, I mean ‘went outside’). He would have lost to Lang (KO-3), Creed (TKO-7) and Drago (KO-4).

Mason ‘The Line’ Dixon looked like a bumped up light-heavyweight to me…..

How about Spider Rico?

Hahah. Just kidding. Between Tommy Gunn and Mason Dixon, Gunn won’t get smoked like people here think. Remember, Gunn got beat up by a younger Rocky than the old one that almost defeated Dixon.

To respond to those others, Rocky Balboa may be my second favorite in the franchise (and perhaps the second-best as well). I liked all of them, but from a critique standpoint, Rocky, Rocky II, and Rocky Balboa are the only favorable ones.

Oh, the tourney:

Apollo Creed would box circles against Tommy Gunn. He will get hit by the machine at times and get rocked, partly because of his showboating, but he either takes a UD or a late-round KO.

Ivan Drago versus Clubber Lang is tricky. If Drago can keep Lang off the bay he will win this one fairly easily, but the pressure power of Lang might get through him. It will be an all-out war as Drago can also fight, too. I look at Lang as a Tyson-type fighter, so maybe he will gas out late in the fight. And Drago’s conditioning? Forget about it. He knocks Lang late.

I’ll go beyond that…

Gunn would get beat by all of them, while a prime Creed beats everybody. Even Drago. For some time, old Creed outboxed Drago before he got hit, imagine how better would Creed do in his heyday?

=)

As usual, nobody is giving Clubber Lang his propers.

Lang and Rock are 1-1, in a pair of short, brutal classics that were begging for a trilogy. Where is the damn rubber match? We needed to see one more to really one more to get a clear winner there. Creed too.

I was incredibly frustrated to see Stallone miss the best boxing film opportunity ever in the series finale. In the nineties post Berlin Wall era, you had an sudden influx of Russians and eastern euro immigrants coming into Philly, including a lot of guys coming from black market backgrounds. How awesome would it have a scene where Rocky visited his old nemesis Ivan Drago in the back of Drago’s seedy raver club on Arch Street. Drago old and fat, doing lines of blow off a CD jewel case, butchering various American catch-phrases and talking about the “good old days”… the movie really needed a scene like that, where it showed two beatup ex-boxers hanging out with each other just because nobody else seems to understand them.

I saw Dolph Lundgren as a guest on Inside MMA a few months ago and he is still in pretty good shape. However, that would’ve been a great scene though.

Doe anyone else think that the last Rocky suffered as a result of Tarver being... well.... Tarver?

The arrogance of the bloke really comes through, and makes Mason Dixon a lot more of a caricature villain/absolute prick than he needed to be.

Had they got Roy Jones in to play Dixon, I think the film would have benefitted as a result. The natural charisma of Jones, and the fact that there is something intrinsically likeable about him, would have probably made the film a lot more watchable.

Anyone else agree? Any other ideas on who could have played the Dixon character?

Stallone is like 5’9". If they actually used a 6’5" boxer, it would be too easy to see how ludicrous the idea of Stallone as a heavyweight boxer is.

and how big is Lundgren? He may not be 6’5’’, but he is a big unit….

So not amazingly ludicrous to have Lennox in there… but he already did a cameo in Ocean’s 11, so maybe another one would have been too much…. :)

Thinking about this a different way

“Tommy Gunn” would sweep them all out like yesterdays trash. Morrison was never quite the phenom he was billed to be, but he did have a devastating left hook and had gone to war in a real “Rocky” way on a few occasions (Morrison-Hipp is still one of the most grisly affairs I have ever seen).

Tommy is an Atlantic City casualty and a sob story these days, but he would have turned out Stallone, Weathers, T, and Lundren like three day old LA County stew.

He had the bigger reach so he would of boxed Lang from a distance and as Clubber got tiered he would of droped that 1850psi power with a straight right. His movement wasnt great but he did well with Rocky in the early rounds you got to watch

Prime for prime

I think Creed boxes circles around Drago.

Creed was just flat out better. Drago was just too stiff and too slow for a guy who had an amazing combo of quickness and power.

I would have agreed with you guys..but..

that right hook that sent Apollo Creed to the grave in Rocky IV just keeps playing over and over in my mind. If the fight could go 12 rounds, prime Creed wins hands down but I think the power punches from Drago takes him out before then. Everytime that Creed would stop to showboat… BOOM… overhand right stops him.

Creed would of been suckered into a war with Drago. He had a perfect KO record before Rocky came along and went the distance and if he went for the KO in the late rounds Drago would be pumped on steroids and be the fresher man. Rocky wore him down by taking his best shots and getting up i dont think Creed could do that

Tonight..

After the conclusion of UFC 100 and Darcinyan vs Agbeko, I’ll be closing the poll… if you think prime Creed can kick the Commie basterd’s butt :)

So...

I was going to close out the poll after UFC100 and Darcinyan and Agbeko (shocked Agbeko pulled it off) but my wife gave birth to my daughter and I didn’t see any of the events… I’ve been busy getting the lil lady aquainted with being at home.

This was some good stuff guys, thanx for playing along.

Congrats!

I stand by my original post, and believe that Lang would have mullered them all (except maybe Creed), but overall this thread has been great fun.

Let us all know what 3am looks like sober…. :)

lol... thats funny

Oddly enough, 3am while being sober w/ a baby is a lot like 3am and drunk…. dried up puke everywhere and a lot of screaming and crying.

LOL

I consider myself lucky to have reached the age I have without yet having the… pleasure… of having kids. One day. Hopefully one day, a long way off. :)

Hope it all goes well for you.

Honestly man… I just turned 29 this past week and although I don’ think anyone is truly ready to be a parent until it happens… enjoy being young and having fun. I’m glad that I waited, lord knows I had enough “scares” until the real thing happened so be smart too!!

My grandfather advice moment has now concluded, lol
