Funny how

Witter is ranked #3 by The Ring and Alexander is unranked, yet Alexander is a solid 2-1 favorite. Just goes to show how the rankings are based a lot more on resume than hypothetical head to head matchups.

I think that's fair though

I can predict that a hot prospect really is better than anyone in the division, but he shouldn’t be RANKED higher until he actually does enough to merit it.

maybe

But the WBC has already shown that they aren’t too kosher with unified titles (as have most of the other sanctioning bodies save for rare cases like Calzaghe or what have you). I mean Witter-Alexander is really only happening because the WBC took Bradley’s belt for no reason.

by SC on Aug 1, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I heard a rumor that the WBC has stopped backing the fight

Due to the judges who were selected, but the rumor is completely unsubstantiated and might be false. Secondsout reported this, but I haven’t seen it reported anywhere else.

Also, says the same thing here:

http://www.examiner.com/x-11372-Dallas-Boxing-Examiner~y2009m7d31-More-Sanctioning-body-chaos-WBC-vs-California-Saturday-night

Basically, WBC rules say that you can’t have two judges from the same country. Since the CSAC selected two American judged, the WBC has balked. Not sure if one of the judges was replaced or not.

I’m pretty pumped about tonight. Both of these look to be competitive fights, and as a big Nate fan, I’m pumped to see him in action (though not at all sure he’ll win against Bradley).

Was there a picks thread for this? I seem to have missed it if there was.

Some us us were putting our picks here. I get the sense that the whole pick contest is over, though. I don’t think I’ve seen an update in a month or so.

It’s a lot to keep up with for me right now (moving tomorrow, wedding in two weeks, etc). I might bring it back at some point if I can figure out a good way to update them easier.

Yeah, I always thought it must have been a hassle to do all that. Maybe one of us lazy bad left hookers ought to pick up the slack and just agree to do it for you.

It's official:

Witter-Alexander WILL be for the WBC title. The CSAC and the WBC came to an agreement. I guess I should read better.

Oh nice, I didn't know Alexander was from St. Louis

It’ll be nice to have a fighter from my home state besides Cory Spinks. I’ve just never been that impressed with him.

by Soria's Unibrow on Aug 1, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Spinks has been a big help with Alexander’s career. Deandre Latimore (Spinks’ last opponent) is also from St. Louis. That was a fun fight, watching an unusually aggressive Spinks win over a crowd that booed the hell out of him early. Cory’s a solid fighter, but hardly inspiring.

Frankly though, if Alexander has intangibles, he beats any version of Witter on pure talent.

I guess the other X factor

is whether Alexander can maintain his workrate against Witter’s awkward style. Even Bradley, who usually throws 70-80 punches a round, only averaged about 55 punches a round vs Witter.

Witter-Alexander R1

Witter jumps in with a couple shots, starting orthodox, and Alexander is trying to find range by flicking his jab out. Right to the body by Witter. Witter pawing his left hand out to block the jabs. Wow, Witter throws a left hook to the body, then Alexander ducks away from a MASSIVE and wild right hand, and Witter basically winds up hurling himself to the mat. Quick switch to southpaw, then back for Witter.

Witter starts crowding him and getting rough. Left hand for Witter, and he’s switching stances again. Alexander is having some problems figuring Witter out so far, but it’s two minutes. Witter back to southpaw. Alexander with a couple jabs. Now Alexander gets crowded and throws this time instead of just standing there and letting Witter lean on him.

I think Frau from Austin Powers is at ringside. “TEN SECONDS!!!!!!”

Witter 10-9

10-9 Witter

Alexander barely landed anything. Witter barely threw anything, but he landed a few good body shots, which is more than Alexander can say.

Witter-Alexander R2

Witter comes out southpaw, then immediately switches. Sneaky right from Witter. Alexander with a left, not all the way there. Witter with another huge, wild swing and a miss. Left to the body by Devon. And there’s another one, with a right hook that misses following up. Blood coming from Witter’s mouth, as he backtracks, tries to shimmy away, and gets hit a couple times. Witter southpaw again, and a lead left lands. These two are going to crush each others’ heads at some point. They are colliding with a lot of ferocity.

Jab by Alexander, then a straight left that leaves him wide open for a hook from Witter. Witter grabs on again, which he’s done a few times this round. Big right hand by Alexander! Witter clinches up wisely, and the round ends. Beautiful right hook by Alexander there.

Witter-Alexander R3

Big trade of shots, Alexander may have hurt Witter once again. Still a really awkward fight for the first minute of this round, but that’s Witter for you. Sounds like a few boo birds might be coming out. Alexander is starting to find a small groove, and there’s a cut outside of Witter’s right eye that isn’t in too bad of a place but isn’t going to be helpful or anything. BIG right hook by Alexander! That’s been the best punch of this fight, and it’s got “wow” factor. These rounds aren’t easy to call and it’s shots like those that can “steal” them, which is what I expected.

Witter-Alexander R4

Witter comes out with some of his herky-jerky offensive work. Witter with another ridiculous swing and a miss, this time an uppercut. Witter doing some good defensive work this round, too. Witter charges in with another combo, not pretty and not clean shots, but they’re landing and Alexander isn’t finding much this round. He could still steal it with 20 ticks left.

Witter gets on his bike before the bell. Maybe the most awkward round of the fight so far.

Witter-Alexander R5

Witter has figured out the right hook, it seems. Devon isn’t landing it anymore and Junior is getting out of the way finally. He’s too good to get hit with it as easily as he was early on. Witter’s backward movement seems to be giving Alexander all kinds of trouble these last two rounds, not so much in OH MAN! BIG SHOT BY ALEXANDER! CAUGHT COLD! Witter is hurt and holding on.

1:20 to go. That was a left hand and a BIG one.

Witter hugging up again. Dr. Lou isn’t having it. Alexander swings another left, glances, hold again. Witter clinches again. He’s going to do it the whole round if he has to. Alexander just misses a right hook bomb. Witter misses a wild left again. Lunging right hook with a left behind it by Witter, but not a lot on it.

Witter mostly survives the round by hanging on.

Corner tells Witter “not to look for any fucking favor from this fucking referee.”

Pretty easy round to score for Alexander

Although I don’t think Witter was as hurt as he let on to be. I think he was trying to lull Alexander into solely attacking so he could land a huge shot.

48-47 Alexander

Witter-Alexander R6

Alexander misses a wild left of his own. Back to two guys pawing jabs and Witter being a fuckin’ weirdo. Witter clinching up a lot still. Trade of soft jabs. Action has stopped a bit. Both are just jabbing intermittently before Witter makes a goofy charge. Tough round to score with 30 seconds left.

Witter back on his horse and htat’s going to lose him the round in my view. Good right by Witter, but Alexander pops him again with a right hook and another left at the bell.

Witter-Alexander R7

Alexander works the jab in the first minute. Uppercut misses from Witter. Junior seems kind of unsure of what he wants to do offensively tonight, a lot like too much of the Bradley fight. Boo birds are out for sure as Witter is really staying in a backward moving mode now. He’s lessening Devon’s output and landing his own jabs, but it’s not impressive to look at for sure.

Left from Witter is the best punch of the round, and that might steal the round. Alexander tries to flurry at the end, lands nothing.

Witter-Alexander R8

Double right hook by Witter, mostly blocked. Alexander’s offense has been neutered by Junior these last two rounds. Wrestling, which disappoints Dr. Lou. Gus thinks Witter is “fighting to survive and not fighting to win,” which is bullshit. Now Gus thinks Dr. Lou should have taken a point away by now. This is what Witter is. He’s a fuck as a fighter. I mean that as a compliment.

Witter makes Alexander miss a bunch, gets on his bike and resets. “Very similar to what we saw against Zab Judah.” Yeah, not really. I mean seriously, not really. This is a really close fight and I think Witter has this round to make it even on my card.

Bradley-Campbell R1

Both guys swinging and missing, Campbell trying to press his way inside, Bradley moving back and trying to stay at range. Campbell working inside now, Bradley shoves him off. Bradley coming back, Campbell jawing. Right hand Bradley. Good combination work by Bradley. Bradley moving back again, keeping Campbell from getting any offense in at all really. Bradley with another combo. Campbell shook his head and postured more than he landed good shots.

Bradley 10-9

Bradley-Campbell R2

Bradley working well again in the first minute. Nate seems a little flat so far, I don’t know. Left hook Bradley gets in again. Jabs from Bradley, Campbell coming back and trying to crowd Bradley, but so far that’s just not leading to much of anything. Nate swings a big right, mostly blocked. Campbell with a right, then a short left uppercut. Nate slips some shots, then takes some punches from a combo. Good action so far.

Left to the body by Bradley. Right to the body by Campbell, warned for a kidney shot. Fun round, fight might get nasty soon.

Bradley-Campbell R3

Bradley working Nate over in close, and Nate complains of a headbutt, and now Bradley is UNLOADING after referee David Mendoza doesn’t intervene after Nate’s complaints. Campbell is in trouble in the corner. He’s trapped. Campbell trying to fight back from the ropes and he’s cut by his left eye. Nate gets off the ropes finally, but eats a series of jabs. Nate winging shots to the body now. Left hook by Bradley. Left to the body by Bradley. And another. Right from Bradley. He’s all over Nate.

Campbell goes to the body, but doesn’t follow up on it whatsoever. Bradley is outworking and outhustling Campbell by a huge margin. Campbell trying to work the body, but HERE COMES BRADLEY THROWING IN HUGE BUNCHES! BIG RIGHT! CAMPBELL EATS IT ALL!

Round ends. Cut isn’t good and Nate just got dominated that round. That was 10-8 in my view without a question.

Bradley 10-8
Bradley 30-26

Campbell says he can’t see.
