I am not going to hang up the gloves...I am going to burn them

Miguel Cotto, talking retirement already. I'm with Scott on this one. I'm all for doing everything you can to keep from retiring with permanent brain damage, but all this retirement talk by fighters who are still in their prime is starting to get to me. Cotto's current contract expires at the end of 2011. (Original link in Spanish, Google translate version provided.)

Maybe he meant something else...

Something against the direction of retirement, than actually retirement, if it has occurred to you. For all we know, he was just having a sarcastic response to a question about retirement or something…

But if he indeed means that, I agree that the early retirement talks are something that I don’t really like to hear (i.e. Pacquiao’s early retirement talks to go into politics)…

Actually, that’s exactly what occurred to me, and that seems to be the gist of the story. It’s a great quote “I am not going to hang up the gloves…I am going to burn them…” In other word’s no ridiculous Mayweather-style charade from this man. Once he is out, he’s out.

Sure we want to see the fighters we like hang around forever. That’s only natural. But then one day you wake up and see a 40 year-old Roy Jones dressed in a pirate suit.

LOL

That is some funny shit…. :D

It's a hard life.

But you have the rest of your existence to not box. Seems like you’d want to squeeze the fruit of every last drop in the meantime, short of doing permanent damage to yourself, of course.

This is a guy

That tasted 11 rounds of loaded gloves in a brawl. That takes alot out of a fighters career.

Gimme 1 round!

It’s tough to rewatch that fight knowing what Margartio has going on there, to be sure.

Chumps!!!

Just the thought of retiring is a good move for Cotto for the simple fact that he will be decimated in November by Pac Man. At least he will have an excuse.
