Being stuck at work sucks
I’ll try to get home in time for Guerrero-Klassen, which is the only fight on this card that really excites me.

I'm actually looking forward to the card
I’ve been swine-flu’d all week, so it might be the delirium. I second Brick, though: Guerrero-Klassen is really my thing tonight. Diaz-Malignaggi probably isn’t going to be fight of the year contender, and I’d bet my last dollar Jacobs-Smith won’t be. Guerrero needs to make a statement here… enough of this new-face garbage.

Dude, I actually white-knuckled through the fucker. It was a FUCKER. I can see how it could probably be a killer for the very young/old.

Speaking of which…I have a friend in the CDC and she says that the whole swine flu thing is something that everyone is scared about because there just isn’t enough Relenza and Tamiflu. People are downplaying the threat but for the high risk groups it the risk is exponentially bigger if the swine flu virus mutates.

On another note...
I just saw Sly Stone’s new “Rambo” picture, and I’m surprised it didn’t get more ink when it came out, one way or another. I thought it was good, and very mature. It wasn’t an action picture. In a weird way it was a very political one, although it sort of went beyond that too for me. Stallone seems to really be getting better with with old age, unlike a lot of other Hollywood freakshows.

right?
Rambo kicked ass. I’m a huge First Blood fan, and like Rocky Balboa to Rocky, I felt like Stallone finally made a proper sequel instead of the garbage that was pumped out before.

UFC on TV
Spike has loaded their evening programming with UFC to counter tonight’s card. I’m still watching the boxing.
Remember the Dana White rule, everyone: If boxing is doing well, it’s not a competitor to UFC. They’re different sports! If MMA “beats” boxing, then it shows that UFC is winning “the war.”

I think today’s event is counter programming. Usually they have fights that feature fighters in upcoming PPVs. The ones shown today don’t have those.
SpikeTV really doesn’t have much programming otherwise. I mean if Dana thinks he needs to “counter” Diaz-Malignaggi, the UFC is a lot fuckin’ weirder than I thought.

The thing people continually ignore with UFC ##s
Is the difference in how the fights primarily make money. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t be surprised if a 900k boxing match makes more revenue than a 1.2M UFC match, simply because there’s such a huge disparity in the number of people who make home purchases versus venue purchases (where the licenses are only $20 per person instead of $50 or whatever).

am i the only one who picked paulie to win?
im liking my pick more and more after seeing them in that photo next to eachother.
Paulie is tougher than Juan by ten thousand miles. But more then half of boxing is punching, and Paulie can’t punch. Juan can’t punch either, really, but he is Mike Tyson compared to Paulie. The only chance I give Paulie is if Paulie doesn’t break his hands and Juan gets cut. Than all bets are off. Diaz fights real good when he’s fresh, but he falls apart when he’s cut. There’s no more dancing around it. Paulie can easily decision a cut Juan Diaz.

Jacobs-Smith R1
Right from Jacobs to lead it off. Ishe keeping his hands up and blocking everything that comes in, but not punching at all for the first 40 seconds. Make that the first minute. Oops, nope, he almost uncorked one. Jacobs just bagging at the gloves. Crowd is booing already. I think I see Winky Wright back there (seriously) wondering why they’re booing (maybe).
Jacobs switches to southpaw as Ishe puts him in the corner, then just dodges his way out. Left hook by Ishe doesn’t land. Ishe is walking Jacobs around to some degree, but Jacobs is the only one trying to make this a fight. Smith goes to the body. Cole gets in there and warns Ishe for straying low, which I don’t think he did, but hey, Laurence Cole.
Dull first round. Very Ishe.
Jacobs 10-9
"Non-descript 1st round"
A nice way of putting it.

"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."
-- Randall 'Tex' Cobb
Jacobs-Smith R2
Jacobs comes out southpaw. Then switches right back. Ishe explodes with a 1-2, neither end landing. Ishe throwing now, landing a left hook. Smith seems more interested in fighting this round at least, though “aggressive” and “Ishe Smith” never go together.
Left hook by Smith on a counter. He’s swinging now. Left hook to the body. That hook is really working this round. Long right by Jacobs glances. Another one misses completely. Jacobs with a combo, mostly blocked. Ishe controlled the ring this round, I thought.
Smith 10-9

Jacobs-Smith R3
Ishe throwing again, but Jacobs is throwing back really well to start the third. I think Danny knows he’s in a fight for sure now that Ishe has decided to not just block and walk. Jacobs is just letting Ishe walk him around still, which is kind of bothersome. Smith is coming at him, coming at him, and Jacobs is moving back, moving back. Teddy Atlas’ statement that Jacobs doesn’t have big power a few fights ago (before he knocked the guy the fuck out) might be true. Jacobs has, as Max says tonight, started to look more natural as a counter-puncher against guys that can take shots.
But this round he’s outlanding Smith pretty well and toward the end starts taking the initiative. Smith with a right, not much mustard on it. They end the round brawling, and now Cole has to get between them as Ishe Smith is PISSED.
Jacobs 10-9

Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"

Jacobs-Smith R4
Ishe is calling Jacobs out on the carpet. Jacobs is throwing, but Ishe is getting in his head, or at least trying to. To Danny’s credit, he’s just going about his business, not getting stupid and trying to prove a point. Now they wing! Ishe is throwing these massive, slow left hooks. For all of Ishe’s taunting this round, he really hasn’t done anything this round, and he more or less gave it away to posture.
Jacobs 10-9
Jacobs 39-37
Jacobs-Smith R5
Big left hook and right cross combo from Ishe. Good combo moments later from Jacobs busts through Ishe’s guard. Jacobs is just beating Smith to the punch and outworking him. I mean that’s really all there is to say. Ishe physically can’t match Jacobs and this has gotten — WAIT A MINUTE JACOBS IS HURT! He walked RIGHT into a combination and Ishe … keeps punching Jacobs after the bell. Purposely. This is getting nasty.
Jacobs 10-9
Jacobs 49-46
Point taken away from Ishe Smith for fighting after the bell
Jacobs 49-45
point was NOT taken

Jacobs-Smith R6
Hurrld gave the last round to Ishe. I thought he won about two seconds of the round.
Ishe has done one annoying thing all night: Backed Jacobs into corners and then just stood there. SMITH UNLOADS! Jacobs eats it all. Right to the body by Jacobs. Good right by Jacobs after a shit warning from Cole. Jacobs is still outlanding Ishe 2-to-1, and HERE THEY GO! They’re getting mean. But it always ends quickly and we go back to little action.
Jacobs 10-9
Jacobs 59-55
I really do think he’s pretty well dominated this fight. Smith has landed the best shots, but he’s landed little else.
Some pretty good inside fighting beginning around 2 minutes into 6, but it cools off by the end and amounts to little.

Jacobs-Smith R7
Ishe starting to stalk. Jacobs throwing now. This has been a great learning experience for Jacobs, though, which is exactly what I expected. Jacobs unloading here in the final minute. Jacobs starting to dominate the action entirely. Totally one-sided round. Jacobs imposed his will in this one.
Jacobs 10-9
Jacobs 69-64
Jacobs is still ducking blind right and leaving himself open to the left hook. It’s a good thing Ishe is tired.

Jacobs-Smith R8
Sneaky right by Jacobs as Ishe runs in at him. Ishe seems to WANT to go for broke, I’m just genuinely not sure he knows HOW to. Jacobs ducking, dodging, and landing. Lennox points out that Jacobs’ right is low. I don’t think it much matters, even though Ishe’s best punch tonight has been the left hook. Right and a left hook from Ishe! Jacobs looked a lot more hurt than Bob Papa gave credit for there. Ishe with another left. Well, shut up me, Lennox saw it coming. This has been a much closer round than most of them have been, and I think Ishe sneaks this one out on landing the clear bigger punches.
Smith 10-9
Jacobs 78-74
Cole is doing a horrible job as usual, but how many fucking times does Smith get away with the hip bop before he loses a point?

Jacobs-Smith R9
Good right by Ishe at the back end of a combo. Nice uppercut inside by Smith. Jacobs really has not opened up with power shots at ALL tonight. Smith’s inactivity in most rounds has been the real difference the deeper this goes and the more we see of Jacobs. Ishe wobbles Jacobs again. I’ll tell you, Jacobs’ punch resistance hasn’t looked great tonight. Ishe is pretty feather fisted.
Ishe gets caught punching at the bell and Cole takes a point. I actually don’t think he DESERVED that. He was mid-punch.
Smith 10-9
-1 for Smith
Jacobs 87-83
Jacobs-Smith R10
Jacobs goes southpaw. Then leaves it again. I don’t even get why the fuck he’s doing it. He doesn’t have an offensive move from the stance and given that he’s done it three or four times, he’s not fooling Ishe. Left hook to the body by Jacobs. Left hook upstairs by Ishe. Smith working with Jacobs on the ropes again. Jacobs is just laying there. A harder puncher might have taken Jacobs’ head off in that position. He just stood there sticking his neck up in the air.
Smith came out in this 10th round ready to war. He’s trying for the stoppage. And he’s throwing a ton. Smith is gassed out. Now he does some weird Roy Jones video game shit. Not a bad fight at all, and I’m somewhat interested in how these cards turn out.
Smith 10-9
Jacobs 96-93
Yeah, good scrap. Hell I am a little surprised, but more because of the fight that Smith put up. People are rightly going to talk about “exposures” here. There is now a fuck ton of tape showing exactly how to beat Dan Jacobs.

Klassen-Guerrero R1
Guerrero staying at distance, Klassen trying to rush in early. Guerrero looks quicker and just plain longer to start. He has dominated the opening half of this round. Absolutely dominated.
Klassen with a right, but Guerrero eats it and just keeps working. Guerrero is just beating the crap out of Klassen in this round. I mean this isn’t even close. This is like your 50th time fighting Glass Joe except he’s not falling down. Easy, easy round for Guerrero.
Guerrero 10-9
This looks to be a good one. From what i’ve heard, Klassen is a slow starter. Great action in there.

Guerrero continues to dominate at range. He’s keeping Klassen chasing and just peppering the shit out of him. Nice right by Klassen and he makes a charge, but Guerrero regroups and resets the fight at center ring, then gets going again offensively. Guerrero keeps rolling this round, but did get stung once. The long jab is owning the ring.
Guerrero 10-9
Guerrero 20-18
Klassen-Guerrero R3
Klassen corner thinks Guerrero is slowing.
Guerrero continues to punch, punch, punch to start the third. Klassen is trying to sneak counter shots in, but he just isn’t getting the openings. Body shot by Klassen. Guerrero looks REALLY on point tonight. He’s treating Klassen like he’s Jason Litzau. Klassen just can’t find Guerrero, who is moving exceptionally well and winning basically every second of this fight. There’s a sharp left by Guerrero, kind of an arm punch but had some stank on it. Heads may have clashed there, and Klassen lands a right after.
Guerrero 10-9
Guerrero 30-27
Klassen-Guerrero R4
Klassen’s first minute of the fourth is looking better. Guerrero hurts him on a body shot now. Klassen with a counter right after a few shots from Guerrero land. He owns the rest of the round again. This is probably the best I’ve ever seen Guerrero fight.
And now it gets chippy at the bell.
Guerrero 10-9

Klassen-Guerrero R5
Klassen is sneaking some more good shots in now, and I think Guerrero is starting to slow. Klassen is potshotting and definitely is fresher. He’s throwing laser beam right hands that are landing. Klassen has come to life. Body shot by Klassen stings Guerrero. We might be looking at a real turning point of a round. Guerrero’s mouth is open, his hands are slowing, and he’s not landing.
Klassen ducks a left. Good round for Malcolm.
Klassen 10-9
Guerrero 49-46

Klassen-Guerrero R6
Good right hook by Guerrero on a charging Klassen. Guerrero laying back a bit more now, throwing combos instead of trying to work non-stop. First minute is all Guerrero.
Klassen with some sharp shots now, but Guerrero gets away and resets. Klassen staying aggressive. Guerrero uppercuts Klassen’s mouthpiece out on the inside. Klassen coming back hard. Klassen grabbing at his left eye as they replace the mouthpiece. Round ends moments later.
Guerrero 10-9
Guerrero 59-55

Klassen-Guerrero R7
Klassen is starting to hurt Guerrero about a minute into the round, stuck on the ropes and Guerrero getting hit a lot. Klassen has had moments where he has really beaten Guerrero up. Klassen hitting to the body now, and hard. Guerrero cut from a headbutt near the left eye. Klassen has definitely used his head.
Cut’s outside of the eye.
Round ends, cut is ruled due to an accidental headbutt. It’s juicing pretty well but it’s in a good spot.

Guerrero looking a bit more tentative, I think. But he’s also trying to keep Klassen the hell away, which plays into it. FIGHT IN THE CROWD!
Left hook by Klassen. Round is winnable with a minute left. Klassen is full of life, Guerrero looks tired from working so much early. I really think Klassen is taking momentum, due to the cut or otherwise.
Klassen 10-9

Klassen-Guerrero R9
Klassen is making Guerrero work a whole lot harder than it appeared he might during the first four rounds. Klassen trying to work inside, and Guerrero trying to stop him from doing it at any cost. The right hand is really starting to work for Klassen, and there’s a body combination and a shot upstairs. RIPPING body shots by Klassen. Guerrero is stuck on the ropes and getting wailed on. This fight is WAY closer than Bob Papa and Max are making it out to be. I mean WAY closer.
VICIOUS body shots by Klassen. He’s really beating the fuck out of Guerrero with those. Guerrero is tiring badly and getting chippy.

Cleaning the ring up before we start the round.
Klassen has worked Guerrero into a bit of an offensive crawl, but Guerrero is trying to work in spurts. Klassen with another hard body shot, and then more work downstairs. He’s really beating on Guerrero, while Guerrero’s punches have turned pretty slappy. I think we’re looking at a fight that either man can win.

Hurrld has it 97-93 Guerrero.
Klassen chasing and catching Guerrero pretty consistently. I mean the commentary is getting fucking ridiculous. Guerrero is losing this fight in the second half, and I think fairly obviously, and Klassen is getting zero respect from these guys. They’re telling a story and not calling a fight anymore. Klassen slips with about a minute left in the fight. Pretty even round until now, I think, but HBO tells me Guerrero is DOMINANT!!!!!!! Guerrero slapping away, Klassen just coming in. Uppercut by Klassen, blocks everything Guerrero throws, and gets going inside. Right hand upstairs by Klassen. Body shot by Klassen. Good fight, and they’re pretending Guerrero dominated the fight.

Diaz-Malignaggi R1
Paulie jabbing, jabbing, jabbing and sticks a right in to start the fight. Stiff jab lands for Paulie. Wow, does he look fast to start.
Three punch combo by Paulie. Blocks a left hook from Diaz. Great crowd too. Houston is really becoming one of my favorite fight cities. They support their guys. It’s like the Montreal of Texas.
Paulie working combos, working his jab, working his stunningly odd eyebrows. Paulie is FAST tonight and he’s outlanding Diaz with ease. Paulie cut from a punch near the end of the round.

Diaz-Malignaggi R2
Honestly, does this fight even need trainers? I’m actually a fan of both dudes, but they fight exactly the same pretty much every time out. The only difference is how good Paulie is or whether or not Juan gets cut.
Diaz with a BIG combo! Crowd on its feet! Paulie takes it in stride though. Diaz ripping away with left hooks, mostly getting blocked, but they look good. Good left hook counter by Diaz. That punch really is starting to work. Bob Papa says Malignaggi has tasted Diaz’s power. He’s been hit way harder.
This is a total Diaz round, basically a 100% reversal of the first round. Diaz is cut now! This is a damn fun fight so far.

No headbutt, so it’s ruled a punch. Cole didn’t see anything either way. I didn’t either, so I’m not busting on him. None of the judges saw anything either apparently.
Diaz with a left hook that swings Paulie’s neck. Diaz chasing, Paulie playing matador. Malignaggi and Diaz are, frankly, really well-matched. I’m digging this fight. Malignaggi is owning THIS round, too. This is back and forth, back and forth. I’m REALLY enjoying this. I like watching styles collide, and this is a collision of styles to be sure.

Good trade of shots near the end of the first minute, with Paulie landing a really sharp left hook. I think Diaz is more concerned with his cut than anything else. It’s just a hindrance for him. And he’s cutting frequently now. Paulie is doing a great job controlling the action right now, and the round ends.

Hook to the body by Paulie. Diaz with a left to the body. Good left hooks upstairs by Diaz. Cut is leaking into his eye again. Malignaggi holds on inside. Paulie working the jab, turning Diaz around, but Diaz’s body work is looking good. Paulie pecking with the jab, spinning around the ring. I mean he’s in a total circle now. Paulie is making this a hard fight to score. If you like what Paulie does, he’s in this. If you don’t, you’re probably liking what Diaz is doing. Paulie is making it an awkward fight now, turning things around, staying at center ring at all costs. And to me, that’s neutralizing what Diaz wants to do, which is pressure, hook to the body, throw that right after it, and make it a brawl. Malignaggi’s trunks fall down.
This was a lot like round seven.

Close again....I'll go Paulie.
95-95 Even.

Thing is ...
Diaz has won one round clearly. Only one, in my estimation.
I dunno, but I think Pauly is up either 2 or 4 rounds.

I got Paulie ahead
But not by as many as some here… this is still a very close fight.

These last few rounds have all been the same.......
Paulie controls 2 minutes by jabbing from the outside, Diaz goes inside for a minute and does twice as much damage. Your mileage may vary.

I guess Donaire-Concepcion last week was pretty good
I’ve read that Olojose-Augustus was a very good fight, but I doubt that one will pop up for me to actually watch it.

Diaz-Malignaggi R11
Paulie Malignaggi has looked better than he has since the first Lovemore N’dou fight. Period. And Juan Diaz just has not shown any real killer instinct. At all. Paulie is all over the ring, and Diaz is chasing but not closing distance. I think this has been a great performance by Paulie and a really disappointing performance from Diaz.
Malignaggi 10-9
Malignaggi 107-102
Round Malignaggi
105-104 Paulie. Meaning, of course, Paulie needs a knockout.

chalk this up to a bad style matchup… or is this a hard loss to come back from?

This is a one-sided fight. Diaz’s work in one minute cannot outdo Paulie’s work in two. I have Paulie up 8-3.
It could if he was actually hurting Paulie
But it’s not.

Diaz-Malignaggi R12
Not for nothin’, but I’m sick of watching Juan’s mom cry.
Paulie coming out throwing this round. His corner thinks he’s well up, but he’s trying to do it for 12 rounds and not lay off. Good idea, Paulie. Diaz scoring with some lefts, upstairs and downstairs. Combo by Paulie. Jab by Paulie. Diaz still trying to close range and failing. He’s had a horrible time with Paulie’s style. Juan just has not been able to pressure the way he usually does, and without pressure, what does he have?
Diaz trying to make it happen, crowd urging him on, but Paulie is making him miss and just looks great defensively tonight. This is the REAL Paulie Malignaggi, I hope, and not an aberration. Diaz with a left hook, but Paulie landed two punches there.
Really good fight, great sportsmanship from both men, and it’s over.

I’ll say either 116-112 Paulie or a draw…. but I guess because I can’t really see it for Juan I’ll have to call a Diaz win good ol’ Texas BBQ.

Awful
I can’t believe that decision. He made it impossible for them to rob him and they did it anyway.
i was just going to say that at least Juan made it through a cut
but he lost anyway…guess not

And by the way, it’s not because I’m “sure” Paulie won. It’s just that this fucking score was absolute horseshit. This was a close fight, and any split D would have made sense. This result makes no sense.

i'm originally from houston
and a well-known baby bull fanboy, but that was FUCKING RIDICULOUS. absolute robbery, and paulie was 100% correct in his post fight interview
as for baby bull being done, thats stretching it. yeah he fucked up against a slickster like paulie, and had a lapse in heart against campbell, but he can throw it down and he sent the #2 p4p fighter to the brink of destruction with his feather fist. he can still get it done, but he is no longer that unstoppable beast that he was prior to the campbell fight

Yeah, I thought Juan got caught in a bad style matchup and that Paulie was REALLY on his game tonight. It is what it is. I don’t think Juan’s done at all (unless he just doesn’t want to fight, which won’t surprise me), but he lost this fight. Paulie did his job tonight.

A blind ape could have scored the fight better…
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
you could randomly
flip a coin each round and score it better
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"
Quite honestly the fight could have been in Mexico and been called more fairly… top that….

i disagree. it was close for sure. arona won the 1st. second could have gone either way. the overtime was fedors.
that doesn’t constitute a robbery. fedor came closest to finishing the fights. aronas submissions much like nog’s in his fights with fedor wasn’t even close to finishing off fedor.

I like MMA
But it’s hard to understand this “old school” thing as a boxing fan. Watching that clip of Pryor-Arguello is what I personally consider old school, but for most boxing fans that’s very much new school.

Who was the judge that scored it 118-110?
I am buying Google ads in his name linking to the post wrap-up.
The worst thing about this fight is that it was close. I personally could see legitmate differences in the way we were all scoring rounds, but I don’t think anyone saw this fight as a “blowout”. Even if you had it 8-4 Malignaggi, I would bet there were some close rounds in there for you. But anyone who had it 118-110 for either figther has no right to be scoring a boxing match, or even looking or commenting on one. If someone told me “118-110” in a bar and I was a younger man by ten years or so, I might have punched him in the mouth. That’s just ugly.
