Really under-rated scraps
I was just trawling the net, reading up on this and that, and came across one of the forgotten 'really really good' fights of the decade, namely Acelino Freitas vs Jorge Barrios. These are not really to be confused with 'great fights', but are worthwhile viewing in their own right, I feel. It made me think that, considering I watched the fight at the time and absolutely loved it, it is a shame we don't always remember these fights.
(I also think Freitas is one of the all-time under-rated fighters, since he never gets any fan-fare, in fact hardly a mention anywhere really... another subject, perhaps.)
All I would ask, is that people add, in the comments, some other really under-rated scraps that they have seen. There must be thousands of them, and some of them deserve some adulation, even if only sporadically.
I've started with Freitas/Barrios, I'll also add more when I think of them (the problem being that they have, by nature being under-rated and therefore not really talked about, slipped my mind).
I'm sure most have seen Hamed/Robinson, so not really sure if that counts (a slightly dodgy second selection on my part!), but I welcome as much feedback as possible.

Bradley/Holt has almost been forgotten already, and that was both very recent and a good fight.
Lewis/Holyfield II was also a good fight that doesn’t get it’s dues thanks largely to the furore surrounding the scoring of both that one and its predecessor.
Any Steve Saville fight that isn’t front page news can be classed as under-rated… I’ve never seen anything quite like him. :)
Edison Miranda vs Kelly Pavlik was a really good dust-up that doesn’t ever seem to get a mention.
Hatton/Thaxton was also a war, back in the day… :)

Katsidis/Earl… (thanks to SC for the earlier post, which I just read and it reminded me… I’ll have to go and watch the Amonsot fight now too… cheers!!)

mtagwa – villa was an AMAZING war that has basically been all but forgotten (though mtagwa has come back into the limelight thanks to juanma lopez). its a shame this fight had to happen in the same year as vasquez-marquez III and pac-jmm II

Not seen that one.
Reckon it’ll be on youtube?
If not, are there any other sites I can use to find less ‘mainstream’ fights, that anyone knows of?

not sure if i’m allowed to say this, but the boxingscene.com forums have an excellent d/l section. there are only a handful of fights that i can’t find on there.
as for popo (rewatching barrios-popo right now), i think its pretty obvious why he’s been swept under the rug. as a boxer you are not allowed to quit, and if you did you sure as hell better redeem yourself. duran had his infamous “no mas”, but he’s still remembered as an ATG despite that debacle. Upon his retirement, not too many people called oscar a quitter because he fought valiantly and proudly throughout his career. popo committed a cardinal sin by quitting TWICE, and that was his downfall.

He didn't quit against Corrales, from what I remember?
I thought it was a late TKO, but I could be wrong. I haven’t seen in it a while.
You are, of course, correct about quitting vs Diaz, but having seen the fight, I don’t really blame him. At some point in a guy’s career, he has to decide, “You know what, enough is enough, I just don’t want to do this any more.”
Most are lucky and feel that while out on the road, or in the gym, or in the bar even after losing a fight. Some guys just get unlucky, and have that epiphany while in the ring.
At least he didn’t quit and then try to excuse it, and then come back at a later date.

Really?
Am I remembering the wrong fight? I thought it was a late stoppage.

oh i’m not blaming him for quitting against the baby bull i was just saying that was the second time he quit. DLH, as i had said, quit in his last fight too and in pretty similar circumstances to popo-diaz, but in his other 5 losses he hadn’t quit before.
