HBO sets up Mosley-Berto, unless Floyd wants to intervene

BoxingScene.com reports that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has informed them that there is a tentative deal for a January 30 fight between welterweight titleholders Shane Mosley and Andre Berto, and only Floyd Mayweather Jr. might get in the way.

From T.K. Stewart:

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's advisor and CEO of Mayweather promotions, told BoxingScene.com that he believes a bout between his man and Shane Mosley is one that will take place.

"I think they will eventually fight," said Ellerbe. "If you're asking me when, I don't know."

At last night's post fight press conference after his unanimous decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather said, "All roads lead to me."

I'm still betting on Mosley as Mayweather's next fight, but maybe Floyd does want to wait until next summer to fight again, which I was guessing he wouldn't. Mosley-Berto on January 30 wouldn't get in the way, at least assuming Mosley won. And if Mosley lost to Berto, that'd be a good way for Floyd to avoid the Cotto-Pacquiao winner, which it seems is the preferred opponent among the boxing fans paying to see the fights.

Mosley-Berto is a good fight, and I think just on experience you have to favor Sugar Shane, but while Berto has been taking some flak lately for not stepping up into the top levels of the 147-pound division, he just might surprise some people and be too young and too fresh for Shane. He's just as fast as Mosley and not nearly as stationary a target as Mosley's last two opponents, Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito. He'll be a lot harder for Shane to find.

I like the fight and hope it comes off. It's a fight between what I'd rank now as the No. 2 and No. 5 welterweights. But if Mayweather is the reason it doesn't happen, I'm OK with that, too.

Would love Mayweather to get in the way

and watch Shane hand it to him, with his ‘all roads lead to me’ b-s. Someone should remind him he proved nothing at all last night…..

And if Mosley lost to Berto, that’d be a good way for Floyd to avoid the Cotto-Pacquiao winner, which it seems is the preferred opponent among the boxing fans paying to see the fights.

What is with this slight? Floyd wants the winner of that fight as it is the most profitable. And both, especially Cotto, are perfect for him.

Until Floyd actually proves he’ll fight that winner, people are going to doubt it. Shane Mosley wasn’t busy when he signed the fight with Marquez, and Mayweather-Mosley always would have been perceived as a more difficult fight than Mayweather-Marquez was. Look, post-fight, this is the reality of it: Mayweather took a really easy comeback fight and a lot of people called it that from the moment they announced the fight. Floyd still has tough questions to answer, like whether or not he’ll finally fight a legit top welterweight, whether or not he can swallow his pride and do a 50-50 deal with Pacquiao should that be the fight, whether or not he’ll deal with Arum at all. I know he’s a great talent and I’m taking nothing away from that, but when you talk as big and as much as Floyd does and people still have as many questions as they do, there are still a lot of answers he has to give. I’ll believe it when I see it is all, and I’d be absolutely thrilled to see it.

Berto beats Mosley, in my opinion.

Berto is a sloppy fighter

He’s fast. But he’s not very good, and two-thirds of his jabs are fouls. Even a 2010 Mosley would administer a swarming beatdown to Berto.

Amazing how few fights are left at the so-called “deepest division in boxing.” Last night’s shenanigans aside, there are only a couple a fights here, and Floyd Mayweather is probably not interested in them. At some point you just have to look at Floyd and say “okay, he is exactly what he seems to be.” Floyd looked a little freaked out last night when Shane was standing over him. Floyd is not a welterweight… and neither is Marquez, and neither is Manny Pacquiao. Shane is, and Miguel Cotto is.

I agree on Berto. He’s really talented, really fast, and really prone to get into a shit load of unnecessary trouble.

But, I think Floyd picks Shane apart to the tune of a UD. One thing I do like is that Naazim(sp?) will likely be training Shane if that fight happens, and I believe in that dude as a really good trainer. Still got Floyd in a UD over Shane.

I agree about Floyd-Shane

And God as my witness, Shane is probably my second-favorite fighter of the modern era (behind Izzy, obviously).

You know who could beat Shane?

Clottey. Josh Clottey has the style and dimensions to frustrate and beat Shane. Clottey is also a real welterweight.

I hope mayweather does this!

No chance in hell does Mayweather stop this. I mean if he wanted to fight Shane this would be a perfect way to scout how Sugar deals with a quicker fighter. Also this fight would help boost Shane’s profile so that he could have enough earning power to hang with FMM. Even if he wanted to stop it he would wait until Cotto Pac. If Cotto wins, Floyd goes after Shane. If Pac wins, then its time to get paid!

If Floyd did get in and sign to fight Shane (i dout he would) Im in the minority that thinks Mosley has what it takes to beat him. Shane has the smarts, the ability, the speed and the power to get to Mayweather.
Floyd seemed at times against De La Hoya to get taken off his game, and it was usualy to do with his jab. Mosley wont get gun shy and abandon it like Oscar did. Even if Floyd counters him a few times Shane has the chin to stand up to it and the speed to not get hit with that lead left hook and not as many of them fast jabs.
I think Mosley beats him by UD, mostly for work rate in the early rounds.

Post-conference

Anyone else see the Post-Match Presser with FMM? Basically dismissing Shane because ‘he has a fight coming up.’ Dougie Fisher manages to ask Mayweather about Mosley with only a minor amount of fan-boy-ness for Sugar. Also a pretty funny moment when FMM criticizes Sugar and Bhop for being dicks, coming from mayweather that means something. Anyways it seems that Floyd is employing the wait-and-see tactic, and will wait until after the Cotto-Pac fight if not after the Mosley fight to pick another opponent. It did seem to bother Floyd that Pac was considered the best boxer in the world, as much as he pretended not to care, no one was buying it. If you want to watch the press conference for yourself its up on ringtv.com.
