Juan Manuel Marquez wants to fight Ricky Hatton at 140

Coming off of a blowout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr., Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez isn't ready to stop thinking big. Marquez now says that he "would like to get the opportunity at junior welterweight to fight Ricky Hatton," which is a fight that's been kicked around for a while now. There was a rumor that Hatton would want to fight Marquez were Marquez to beat Mayweather.

A pessimist would say that this is kind of like the ultimate consolation prize fight. Marquez was blown out by Mayweather, while in May, Ricky Hatton lasted less than two rounds against Manny Pacquiao. Those have been 2009's biggest fights to this point, and neither of them were in the least bit competitive.

140 would be two pounds less than Marquez weighed in for the Mayweather fight, but still maybe just a little too heavy. Evening that out is the chance that Ricky Hatton simply doesn't take a punch too well anymore. Pacquiao hurt him with just about everything major that he threw. It goes back to Hatton's TKO loss to Mayweather, where people immediately began to wonder if he'd ever be the same.

Since then, he's beaten Juan Lazcano and Paulie Malignaggi, two limited fighters without a ton of power, and then was ripped apart by Pacquiao. Hatton has always been a strong bully fighter at 140, and even if he's not the guy he used to be, Marquez would likely have some trouble if Hatton could make it physical.

Marquez, while a better fighter, has been weaker even at 135 than he was at 126 and 130, but he maintained his power up to 135 pounds, too, if not perhaps even gotten stronger there. At 140? I don't know. The two fighters' battles with Mayweather don't tell us a lot that we didn't know going in: Ricky Hatton is no welterweight, and neither is Juan Manuel Marquez. That comparison is useless, really.

I don't even think you can compare much about their Pacquiao fights. Marquez fought Manny at 126 and 130, and Ricky fought him at 140. And styles make fights and all this. Freddie Roach believed Hatton was tailor-made for Manny, and he was right. Marquez has fared better than anyone has since the first Erik Morales fight against Pacquiao.

A lot of people are probably going to wonder what the point of this fight is. That's easy: Money. If they can figure out a way to make some, they'll make it. It's probably the biggest possible fight for Marquez, and I really don't see what Hatton could do that would make him more than this one, either. It wouldn't be a mega fight or anything, simply a good HBO World Championship Boxing main event, hopefully paired with something that features some fighters on the rise.

You could count me in so long as nobody tries to sell Hatton-Marquez on pay-per-view.

Good Fight

That fight will be very intresting but I believe JMM can knock out Hatton. It would be a good payday for both.

Marquez kills Hatton.

And like rgb says, gets another big payday. Hard to fault a guy who has toiled in anonymity for so long for trying to cash checks while his star is in ascendance.

Depends on where the fight is

If it’s in England, where a ref is pretty likely to let him get away with the jab and grab all night, he very well could win. If it’s in Vegas, I’d slightly favor Marquez.

People overestimate just how ‘shot’ Hatton really is. Less than a year ago, he put a thoroughly one-sided beatdown on the same Paulie Malignaggi who most thought beat Juan Diaz. I also think people underestimate how small Marquez is. We could see it clearly against Mayweather, but Hatton would probably dwarf him (horizontally at least) by about the same proportion. Hatton likes bullying around smaller guys, and I could see Hatton having his way with Marquez if he’s allowed to clinch with impunity.

Your Right

I hatton fights in England he will get away with alot like he did when he fought Tszyu. If he fights here Marquez will KO him, Hatton strugged against Lazcano. I would also like to see Juan Diaz vs Hatton

I thought Lazcano was more in the fight than the awful official scores, too, and who knows what would’ve happened if that absurd referee hadn’t rescued a wobbled Hatton so that he could tie his shoes. I had it 116-112 for Hatton and thought Ricky really didn’t look very good. I like Hatton-Marquez or Hatton-Diaz just fine if Ricky wants to fight again.

The last sentence of your story sums up my response too, Scott.

Mayweather is the opposite boxer of Hatton. Where Floyd is a tactician, retreating when needed, attacking when needed, slipping in and out and outworking his opponents with skill; Hatton is a hands up, walk you down, no-jabbing fighter. Hatton’s style plays perfectly into Marquez’s wheelhouse. I think Hatton better think twice about fighitng JM Marquez.

yup. I agree. I also think Juan Diaz outworks Hatton. I think Diaz has the in-tight skills to turn and hit again and again, just like he did with Katsidis. I’d like to see either of those fights though.

Yeah, maybe Hatton-Diaz winds up looking like Diaz-Katsidis, but then again maybe Hatton is too strong for Juan. Katsidis fought a terrible fight that night and got some of the worst corner advice we’ve ever gotten to hear on TV.

Kat’s trainer is one of the strangest guys. I can’t really put my finger on it, but there’s something about that guy that’s a little different. I’ve been around a lot of Aussies, but not one like him.

This could be an intriguing fight. They are both past their best days but Hatton can’t even find the heart to fight anymore and Marquez has no handspeed north of 140 so it could be a dull dragged on “who will fall first” big money match.
