"Shh. Don't embarass yourself kid"
Now as long as boxing has been on the forefront of American sports, interviews with the media and documentaries for the fans have always seem to exist .Knowing ur pugilist inside the ring was easy if you followed the sweet science well .But It was always fascinating to discover the humor and intensity of boxings best over the years outside the ring as well. Boxing can be comedic at times. It can also be inspiring. The honesty and humbleness of Joe louis, and the legendary gab of" The Greatest" Muhammud Ali. And sometimes... just the flatout blunders that come out of others mouths (John Rocker type moments) that definitley had people scratching their heads for years to come.. Now I don't expect my favorite fighter to talk like Leo Tolstoy, but at least keep from embarassing yourself. From Tyson's "I want to eat his children" (Referring to Lenox Lewis' children) to "I'll never let a white boy beat me" shouted by Bernard Hopkins prior to his fight with "Super" Joe Calzaghe last year.(By the way he lost). To James Toney's endless portrayal of an absurd idiot.. So boxing fans,What is the most embarassing, most absurd or funny thing you heard a boxer say?? I'd love to hear em!!

to “I’ll never let a white boy beat me” shouted by Bernard Hopkins prior to his fight with “Super” Joe Calzaghe last year.(By the way he lost).
Look… Hopkins was just referencing Minter with this statement. He was literally quoting the man, but casual and younger fans simply did not get the joke. It was a historical thing, not some sort of a racial comment.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."
-- Randall 'Tex' Cobb
regardless of whether it was also ‘a historical thing’, it was also racial. Maybe it was purely for the pub, but it was racial, I have no doubt about that. I wish B-Hop could have backed it up though. Few dislike J-Cal’s style more than me.
"I swear to God, I'll take this ******* ball and shove it down your ******* throat" - Serena Williams
It was not “racial.” It really wasn’t. It’s insane to me that some even really smart, knowledgeable boxing fans still think that it was. He was making a joke, and I still think it fell flat only because of people who weren’t as big a boxing fan as Hopkins and wouldn’t know Alan Minter from Bennie Briscoe …. even Calazaghe seemed to get the joke.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."
-- Randall 'Tex' Cobb
The last time I heard Joe-Cal talk about it, he still sounded really pissed off about it. I think he’s still generally pissed off at Hopkins, in large part for that comment.
Let’s just say, for argument’s sake, Hopkins really meant it as a historical, off-the cuff quip that shows his subtle yet sophisticated sense of humor we all know so well (what?!). Hopkins using it in that context is like me using the word ‘niggardly’. It doesn’t have anything to do with the word it sounds like, it doesn’t derivate from the word it sounds like, yet I should and do know that I really can’t use that word because it instantly has loss of job implications. Same thing: whether Hopkins meant it as a boxing insider reference, the context of the reasonable man is everything, and it is totally unreasonable to think that the statement ’I’ll never let a white boy beat me’ isn’t racial, it’s really just a really smart history lesson. Please.

Dude
In the run-up to his fight with Hagler, Minter said ""I’ll never lose my title in a ring to a black man." Minter was talking about the middleweight title, something Hopkins knows a little bit about. It was a very easy reference made during a very difficult promotion… it was exactly “obscure” and I don’t think you’d necessarily have to be a hardcore fan to understand it. You please.

it WASN'T exactly "obscure"
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."
-- Randall 'Tex' Cobb
Sorry if I sound pissed
But this sort of thing really pisses me off. It was a good, funny, relevant comment. And hey, Hop couldn’t capitalize on it… neither could Minter. That’s life, but I hate it when guys get too sensitive about this stuff. It was a good joke… it would be on the order of Chris Arreola saying something like “I’ll moidah da bum.”
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."

Look I like Hopkins, but the man knows what he’s doing and he knows how it’s perceived. The shit he does is no accident and how it’s perceived is no accident.
When you wear an executioner’s mask into the ring, you are likely not trying to win friends.
"I swear to God, I'll take this ******* ball and shove it down your ******* throat" - Serena Williams
And
I don’t think Hopkins meant it in as a reference to this. I think he meant it in his divisive, The Executioner manner that defines him. He meant it to play the heel, to piss everyone off and try to drum up pub and thus money. I don’t think he’d rather lose to a black man than to a white man, but I do think he knows how to sell himself as the heel, and throwing down a little ‘race-baiting’ was just part of game.
How about when he threw down Tito’s PR flag, what was his smart and sassy lil history lesson there?
"I swear to God, I'll take this ******* ball and shove it down your ******* throat" - Serena Williams
Nonsense
Come on now…. You don’t think Hopkins was thinking about “Minter-Hagler” when he said that? The premiere middleweight of the previous decade is fighting a Briton, and in the waning days of the promotion LITERALLY QUOTES MINTER and you think its a coincedence? Get outta here with that stuff.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."
-- Randall 'Tex' Cobb
he didn’t literally quote him. He had to change the quote to make it fit into his race. His what? His race, the racial set-up of this fight. In order to try to sell this fight. By using race. By using race to sell the fight.
I don’t think he’s racist. But even if he was thinking of Minter when he made the comment, it was calculated to illicit focus for what it was: creating focus and attention. This is what he does, he builds animosity. Did you not see him standing over Mosley’s shoulder the other night?
"I swear to God, I'll take this ******* ball and shove it down your ******* throat" - Serena Williams
Well, maybe we’ll just agree to disagree. I for one have always thought that Hopkins brought a realness to his trade… even when he faking stuff. Hopkins stands over a lot of shoulders these days, and I lik to see him in that role. I know I’m in the minority on this blog, and probably in the whole world, but I think Hopkins is not only a great boxer, but he is great for boxing. I would pay to have Lennox Lewis’ commentary shut off during a fight, but I would also pay to have Nard’s turned on.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."

I’d love to have B-Hop doing commentary full-time. I’d rather have many people other than LL. I liked RJJ a lot when he use to do it. I liked Sean O’Grady before he became exclusive toughman property.
"I swear to God, I'll take this ******* ball and shove it down your ******* throat" - Serena Williams
How about when he threw down Tito’s PR flag, what was his smart and sassy lil history lesson there?
Yeah, how about that. I’ll tell you, I was there at that fight, and promotion was the last thing on the Executioner’s mind when he walked into that ring… Quite frankly, it was the last thing on anyone’s mind when he walked in, in his Captain America outfit. Even the Puerto Ricans cheered him on THAT night.
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."
-- Randall 'Tex' Cobb
Right
Once he’s in the ring, once the mask is off and the pub is done, he’s one of the most professional, well-prepared, game-plan and execution(no pun intended) fighters I’ve ever seen.
That’s one of the reasons I like him. He comes to win and knows how to do it very well. But, as calculated as he is in the ring, he’s also a savvy businessman whose had a hard time selling fights. Appealing to culture/race has never been far off his radar.
"I swear to God, I'll take this ******* ball and shove it down your ******* throat" - Serena Williams
Hopkins is no "Malcolm X"
He’s not even a Muhammed Ali when it comes to that stuff. Really, it’s blown out of proportion. Hop is a pro, and his promotion with Calzaghe was about as good as it could be under the circumstances. They exchanged some real good stuff… I loved the back and forth about “Mary Popkins.” Hop said “You know, Mary Poppins was a real powerful lady…”
"This fight'll be the nastiest thing you'll ever see. I been sober for six weeks, and that makes me vicious."

Just answer me this and I'm done
You’re saying Hopkins in no way had any intent or purpose to implicate race by the statement “I’ll never let a white boy beat me”. Hopkins was just trying to reference Minter’s comment. That’s all he was trying to do?
Jrok – I know you like Hop, I do too, but I don’t believe you believe that.

You’re saying Hopkins in no way had any intent or purpose to implicate race by the statement "I’ll never let a white boy beat me".
I’m not saying he wasn’t talking about race. Look honestly , race is a big deal when you grow up all rubbed up against one another. Everyone bashes each other and everyone brings race into it, usually in less meaningful ways than Nard did. As You can say anything you want but still have to prove yourself on the street or in the ring. I was laughing because it was good theatre that reminded me of Hagler-Minter… certainly better then someone like Floyd saying “black men are superior fighters”… and at the same time NOT fighting any black fighters at welterweight. That’s the sort of horseshit I think you are really talking about… where it’s insincere and just meant to rile people up. There is a difference between that and Hopkins maing a relevant joke that was more about the international flavor of the fight than it was about race.

well speaking of race-baiting

it can’t be racial because bhop is black and minorities aren’t racist

Well… that’s not what I’m saying. What I’m saying is that the “outrage” here was based on ignorance of what the hell Hopkins was referencing. I thought it was ridiculous… even so-called experts weren’t making the connection.

I took it as tongue-in-cheek. battle axe has a good enough history to get away with a few semi-off color comments.
(Yes, my rules on what people say are biased toward how long they’ve been around. Yes, that seems perfectly reasonable to me.)

There was also Mayorga's comment in the corner in the Vernon Forrest fight
But repeating that one would probably get me labeled a racist.

I want to know too...
Boxing is the beginning of all sports. I'm willing to bet that the first sport was a man against another man in a fight. (Omar Epps)
HBO's translator translated it as an exasperated (and hesitant)
’that black guy hits hard!"
First words out of his mouth in the corner.
Mayorga has about a million classic quotes though. I can only understand just enough Spanish to get by (and every year I understand less and less of it), but I remember some of the stuff he was saying in the Vargas promotion just cracked me up, but the way he says it, it almost never translates as funny as the way he says it in Spanish.

I really liked what Pitulua (I think) said about Valero?
Something about him being a bitch, and after he beat him (which never happened, obviously) he was gonna smack him like a prostitute and cut his hair? Or something? I remember it made me laugh at the time….

Now that I think of it
I’m shocked Tex Cobb hasn’t been mentioned either. He had about a million classics too. My favorite of his apocryphal stories:
In 1980 or so, there was a big dinner honouring heavyweights of the past and present. Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes were all there. So were Renaldo Snipes and Tex Cobb. In his usual fashion, Tex Cobb got up to give a toast. He said, “I’m honoured to be in the same room as some of the baddest n**** ever.” Renaldo Snipes stood up, and said, “I’m not going to stand here and let you call me a n****!” Cobb said, “Relax. I wasn’t talking about you.”

He was genuinely hilarious. If his boxing skills were anywhere as sharp as his wit, he would have been a world champion!
