Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has big(ger) plans for 2010
If you were worried that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was content to ride through a career in boxing on his father's name, fighting mediocre opposition on $40 pay-per-views, you might be seeing the end of those days. Well, the mediocre opposition at least.
Chavez told The Record (link via BoxingScene.com) that the WBC has informed him that he will be named the mandatory challenger to 154-pound titlist Sergio Martinez, and that the WBC will order the fight. He has a fight against an opponent to be named on December 19 (another "Latin Fury" PPV) in Cancun, and then Top Rank will try to line up what could be a hell of a good fight between Chavez and John Duddy for the first quarter of 2010. At the earliest, he might be able to fight Martinez in the summer of 2010.
As for Martinez, he's looking to fight Joshua Clottey on December 5 on HBO for the time being, and I'm sure if he holds on to his title between now and then, he'd be happy to fight Chavez. For one thing, it'd be a solid payday, whether he had to do it on another PPV or if this would finally be a Chavez fight that HBO would pick up. Also, Martinez is about three classes above the guys Chavez has been beating and sometimes struggling with. The likes of Jason LeHoullier, Matt Vanda, Luciano Cuello, etc., just do not match up with Martinez, who is arguably the best 154-pounder in the world if you don't count Paul Williams right now.
Considering it would come first, though, how about that Chavez-Duddy idea? It's been discussed before, but for as second-tier as both guys are considered, we also both know that Duddy is always ready to throw down, and we've seen Chavez in some damn good fights when he's pressed. Chavez may not have his father's skill, but when someone shows up with a pulse against him, he isn't afraid to bang. Chavez-Duddy could be a bloody mess and a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, Boswell is now fighting Cisse Salif tomorrow according to BoxRec.
I guess Ustinov chickened out.
Ustinov had a visa issue, apparently.

2010
Sergio Martinez vs Clottey wiil be a tough fight. Im glad that finally Arum will put Jr. against Tougher opponents in 2010!!!
It’s beyond mediocre really. I think Angulo was calling him out not too long ago. Canelo Alvarez has been calling him out for a while as well, but nothing has even bother to turn out. “Big 2010” to be stopped that is.

?
I would definitely pick Angulo to KTFO skinny Chavez. I have no faith in Jr at all, he almost lost to the guy who got completely owned by Duddy when Duddy was trying to be a boxer.
Chavez Jr. (=) paper tiger.

Really
Angulo is Slow and he would Knocked Out. Well see and I hope the fight happens I do agree that Jr. needs to fight Bigger names and prove himself.
I just think Chavez hasn’t proven himself and he’s actually gotten in trouble in fights that were cherry-picked for him to win.
If you think Chavez would KO Angulo, you must think that Chavez hits significantly harder than Kermit Cintron. I doubt that very much.

Chavez had no amateur career. Of course he’s going to go slow. He’s going to surprise a bunch of people.
I used to think the same
But the fact that he’s shown little progress over the last few years makes me think he just doesn’t learn well enough to become an elite fighter, and he’s never had that toughness and grit that made his father special.

If he's facing Duddy first
I’d be surprised if he even makes it to the Martinez fight. And Martinez would tear him a new asshole. And heck, I’m not sure that Martinez doesn’t lose his title to Clottey if they fight on the 5th.

would the title be on the line? i would love to see the face on Jr. when realizes he’s the mandatory for the beast that is Josh Clottey
My initial gut reaction is that Martinez would win. One of Clottey’s best attributes at welter is his size. He isn’t all that tall or long but he doesn’t have a height or reach disadvantage either and he’s really solidly built. But against Martinez, he’d give away three inches of height and three inches of reach.
Also, has Clottey ever fought a cutie? If his problem is that he doesn’t throw enough punches, won’t Martinez just be able to hit and run before Clottey can pull the trigger?
It's quite possible
I could see that going either way. I could also see Martinez not pulling the trigger enough because he’s afraid of getting countered.

Good Fight
I know he is fighting Duddy first, Martinez vs Clottey will be a good fight. I wouldn’t mind seeing Canelo vs Angulo.
I hope Martinez knows that if the fight goes down, he’s gonna need a knockout to keep his title, this recent development makes me believe that the fix is already in, and Martinez is a lame duck titlist, i mean if he can get jobbed against Kermit Cintron, imagine what they’ll do to him with Chavez Jr., the son of the recipient of some of the most blatant gift decisions in boxing history
