JUST WOW

The Irish commentators basically just said that Fury just needs to keep winning to become a huge star in America because he’s “a white guy who looks like he does and fights like he does”.

It did sound bad, but there wasn’t anything insidious about it. There has been similar talk about Areola representing heavyweight latinos in relation to stardom.

They’re really harping on the idea that Fury being white will be a big deal in America. “That’s not racist, believe me,” commentator says. Hard to argue in a lot of ways. It’ll help, no doubt. Also helps in America: Being Irish so that all the Irish flag-waving northeasterners can go crazy.

Fury-Mrazek R2

Mrazek is pretty happy to just eat jabs and body shots. He’s literally only here to get a few clams and move on with his life. Fury really ripping to the body. Now he’s unloading in the corner, but Mrazek to his credit throws back and gets out of there. Fury continues to dominate, as you’d expect. There’s just not much to say. It’s another showcase for Fury after the scare put into him by John McDermott, who is no doubt about 12 classes above Mrazek. Nice left hook to the body, and Mrazek just keeps trying to move away.

Fury-Mrazek R3

Watching Fury work against guys like this is sort of like watching a lion fart around with a field mouse, but at least these commentators are talking about his flaws and what he needs to improve upon if he wants to keep progressing. Nice right from Fury. Man, he’s laid in some good shots in this fight, but Mrazek is staying up there pretty well and even fighting back as much as he can. I mean, Mrazek’s been stopped 10 times, but to be fair, he’s lost 22 times.

Watching this fight, I’m kind of wondering why they even made it. Fury’s really not looking so great from a freshness standpoint, because he just had a tough 10-round fight 15 days ago. Fury does some more decent work and easily wins the round, but this is headed for a decision it looks like.

Fury-Mrazek R6

Final round. Fury has a real boner for getting knockouts, the McDermott fight being his first that went the distance, so let’s see if he comes out swinging hard.

Yep, he does, but Mrazek has kept his guard so high that he’s just tearing to the body again. Great bit of commentary: “He won’t win any beauty contests tomorrow. In fairness, he wouldn’t have won one coming in.”

Fury slinging big, wild lefts to the body, now running around, chasing him, leaning on him, and loading up on body shots, which Mrazek is giving him. Now Mrazek is keeping him tied up. No KO for Tyson, it would appear. 30 seconds left in the fight. WELL, there’s a cracking shot from Fury and Mrazek crumbles a bit.

Let him finish the fight. Fury charges and comes at him again, and I think they ruled a slip there, but either way, Mrazek survives the fight and Fury gets no KO. He went for it, just didn’t get it.

Dunne-Poonsawat R1

They’re talking about Dunne fighting Izzy Vazquez should he win tonight.

Dunne with a couple of jabs, then he really sticks him with one. He’s got a clear size advantage, height and just his frame overall. He’s taller and wider. Poonsawat looks tiny next to Dunne, who is no giant. Left-right by Poonsawat doesn’t get home. Dunne is really sticking that jab in there nicely, making Poonsawat work really hard to find him, and the challenger is taking the chances so far. Right from Poonsawat inside. Left hook to the body by Dunne. About four punches in a row from Dunne, two of them nasty left hooks to the body again. Great opening round for Dunne.

Dunne 10-9

Fairly biased commentary but dunne is defintely winning

I think they had Dunne beating Cordoba as well

But he was well behind on all the cards when they became available.

Dunne-Poonsawat R2

Left hook by Poonsawat glances after Dunne paws a bit. Poonsawat trying really hard to close the range and get inside. Right hand by Dunne, but Poonsawat just goes right back to work. Nice right by Poonsawat, and then some good body work. Combination from Dunne. Business is picking up already. Poonsawat strikes to the body again. Left hook to the body by Dunne, Poonsawat fires back with a chopping right hand upstairs. Poonsawat pressing his way inside, blocking a lot of shots with his arms. Good shot by Dunne at the end of a nice three-punch combo. Poonsawat goes back upstairs, just misses. Right hand Poonsawat. Left hand Dunne. Dunne wrestles him a bit at the end of the round. Poonsawat got right back into this fight.

Poonsawat 10-9

Dunne-Poonsawat R3

Poonsawat was warned between rounds for using his head. Dunne pumping the jab again, as he did in the first round. Good shots from both, and now Poonsawat digs to the body and starts getting really busy. Poonsawat is essentially charging his way in now. Left hook to the body from Dunne. Poonsawat goes to the body with his own left hook. He’s doing really good work inside. DUNNE GOES DOWN! They’re counting, and he’s cut. He’s up and will fight on.

Poonsawat really going at him now! Dunne looks almost confused. Dunne firing back! Center ring, here they go! They’re really whining about Poonsawat using his head. They’re acting like it’s all he’s doing.

Dunne goes down again! Poonsawat all over Dunne! Dunne is in serious trouble! BUT HE’S FIRING BACK! I’LL BE DAMNED! DUNNE DOWN AGAIN!

That’s it!

Bernard Dunne is done!

Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym TKO-3

against guys making their pro debuts. But we all know he will.

Dunne's certainly a warrior

But with his chin, I’m surprised he won a belt at all.

If he hadn’t moved up, Dunne-Litzau would have been a fun one.

Vazquez is going up to 126 and Poonsawat looks like he’s pressing his luck at 122. He is really small.

It seems impossible

That he would be more popular than Wonjongkam. That guy is like a god over there, like their Manny Pacquiao.

It’s hard to explain for guys that don’t follow them, but even the green ones are very tough. It is a boxing crucible.

They start fighting pro super young

Muay Thai guys start at 15 or 16 and are done by their late 20’s. Early 30’s is positively ancient.

Very supportive in-ring interviewer

“We think of you as a champion (crowd cheers) and we know you’re going to bounce back.”

Much more refreshing than Max Kellerman, who probably would have asked something like “When did you realize you were overmatched by Poonsawat’s power?”

The worst part about Max is that there is no, uh… gravitas? No gravitas. It just feels like Ryan Seacrest could be in there popping off these sorts of lines. Merchant has some supspense about him; Merchant could potentially say something really stupid, or weirdly brilliant, or drunkenly poetic or just plain rude. Max runs on one gear, and its new and shiny.

Agreed about Max and the “gravitas” factor—though I find it’s less of a problem when I don’t have to look at him while listening.
